Choosing the correct pathway into Year 11 and 12 is one of the most important decisions for students and their families to make.

The pathways available to students have evolved considerably over the last few years in schools and Mater Dei College now offers a variety of pathways to meet the individual needs of all students at the school.

A pathway choice for students entering Year 11 should be recognised as a two year proposition through until the end of Year 12. In choosing the correct pathway it is imperative

that the following is taken into account, as it relates to the individual student;

The pathways to University Entry continue to evolve. The 2018 Mitchell report highlighted that over 60% of students were entering university without an ATAR score. It is the new entry method preferred by students across the nation.

The Altitude Pathway at Mater Dei College encompasses three overlapping directions for university entry:

1. Portfolio / Audition Entry2. Diploma Level Entry3. Certificate IV Entry

Of the 6 Courses students are required to undertake in Year 11 and 12, students can study between 0 to 3 ATAR courses and must successfully complete a Certificate ll or higher course. All universities offer a variety of Alternative Entry Pathways which should be investigated according to the specialist field.

The universities offer a wide range of Alternative Entry Pathways for students who do not study ATAR or meet the University ATAR Entry Requirements.

Edith Cowan College, Curtin and Murdoch Institutes offer a direct pathway for students without an ATAR into their associated university. Entry is at Diploma level for 1st year students after which, successful completion can lead to direct entry into the 2nd year of the affiliated degree.

Edith Cowan College (ECC) has an increasing number of Australian citizens and permanent residents who choose to commence studies through ECC to start their degree and help guide them into their second year at ECU. ECC is for domestic students who:

• Completed Year 12 but did not attain an ATAR• Did not meet ECU’s ATAR entrance requirements• Did not complete enough ATAR subjects at high school

(less than four ATAR subjects)• Successfully completed Year 11

Entry Requirements

• Diploma (Year 1) Year 11 with a minimum 50% in 4 WACE subjects, plus a minimum C grade in English

• Diploma (Year 2) Year 12 with a minimum 50% in 4 WACE subjects, plus a minimum C grade in English; or a minimum ATAR of 50 plus a minimum C grade in English

Curtin College offers a range of qualifications leading to the second year of selected Curtin bachelor degrees. The Curtin College Diploma is two years in total. It has two stages: Diploma (Stage 1) and Diploma (Stage 2). Where students start will depend on their qualifications. Curtin College is for students who: • wish to attain a Curtin University Bachelor Degree, • do not meet Curtin’s minimum entry requirements, • complete Year 12 but do not obtain an ATAR (or equivalent), or • are of mature age and need an alternative pathway to university.

Study areas include; • Architecture, Construction & Built Environment • Business & Commerce • Communications, Design & Arts • Engineering • Health Sciences • Computer Science & Information Technology

Murdoch Institute of TechnologyAt MIT, the focus is on getting students into the university course they want. If students don’t meet university entry requirements, they should not worry. Maybe students are only just finishing year 11, or they graduated year 12 with an ATAR lower than expected. Whatever the situation, MIT can help. Murdoch Institute of Technology bridges the gap from school to university. It offers a Murdoch University Preparation Course and Diploma Pathways.

Universities offer entry into a number of courses through submission of a portfolio and / or audition. It is imperative to realise that the portfolio / audition process varies considerably across the universities and are specific to each course. Universities do run access entry programs for students who have completed a Certificate lV, subject to meeting the university’s English competency standards. Certificate IV Courses are available through CareerLink (see VET Pathway) or can be completed at TAFE after Year 12. For further specific details students should contact the university directly and/or check out the entry requirements on their website.

Additionally completion of a Certificate lll may allow students to enter through a University Preparation Course subject to meeting the university’s English competency standards. Details on individual websites.

For those students who aspire to enter the workforce, TAFE or are seeking an Apprenticeship. Students may study a variety of General and Certificate Courses.

The Certificate courses must not exceed more than 50% of the total course combination and at least one Certificate ll or higher must be successfully completed.

A distinct VET Pathway is available at Mater Dei College through;• Careerlink• School Based Traineeships / Apprenticeships• TAFE Profile Courses• Fee for Service

Complete Certificate Courses II, III or IV. These are external to school and involve 1 day a week out of the school. Students can also elect to complete a 55 hrs or more Work Placement Program.

This pathway leads to University/TAFE or Employment entry levels.

For those students who are aiming for direct entry from Year 12 into a university education. Students can study up to 6 ATAR Courses, however, at a minimum they must undertake at least 4. Students must meet all WACE requirements and achieve at least 50% in ATAR English. The final ATAR Score is derived from the top

four courses after the final calculation of 50% the school based score, plus 50% of the final External examination score on the completion in Year 12. Entry to university is subject to individual university requirements.
