Your ResponsibilityEVERY student WILL graduate from Helensvale State High and WILL achieve:
1. A QCE – Queensland Certificate of Education
AND
2. An ATAR, OR a Nationally recognised qualification (Certificate course)
School SubjectsThree Categories of School Subjects:
1. General subjects (used to calculate ATARs)Examples include – General Mathematics, English, Legal Studies,
ChemistryALL General subjects have External exams at the end of Year 12. Maths and Science exams are worth 50% of students total result
2. Applied subjects Examples include: Sport and Recreation, Hospitality Practices, Aquatic Practices,
Essential English, Essential Mathematics
3. Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificate coursesExamples include: Cert III Dance, Cert II Business
Apprenticeships and Traineeships
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship provides the opportunity to train on the job while working towards the QCE.
School-based apprenticeships or traineeships provides the opportunity to train on the job while working towards the QCE.
They are usually at Certificate III level
QCE credit and Duplication of Learning
TRAINING PACKAGES AND APPLIED SUBJECTS
Students cannot study the following subjects together, as they will not maximise
credit points:
Certificate II Visual Arts and Visual Arts In Practice
Certificate II Sport and Recreation / Certificate III Sport and Recreation and
Sport and Recreation (Applied) / Sports Academy
Certificate II Sport and Recreation / Certificate III Fitness and Sport and
Recreation (Applied) / Sports Academy
Contribution of TAFE courses and School Based Traineeships/Apprenticeships
will also have to be taken into account for crossover of Training Packages or
Applied Subjects.
Training Packages
To ensure a breadth of learning, a maximum of eight credits from the same
training package can contribute to a QCE.

ATAR Pathway Vocational PathwayStudents chose:• 6 subjects – it is recommended students study
6 General Subjects• 5 General Subjects and a Cert III or higher• A minimum of 4 General Subjects, a Cert III or
higher and 1 Applied Subject that HSHS approves

QTAC
• Will scale subjects with information given from QCAA. All students who complete the subject are included in the scaling.
• Student have 5 years to attain an ATAR
ATAR• Units 3 and 4 MUST be studied together
• Result to be based on 3 Internal Assessments, and 1 External Assessment
• Between 25% and 50% externally assessed• Common to all schools
• Same time, same day
• Developed and marked by QCAA
• Conducted in Term 4 in Year 12
• Assessing subject matter from Units 3 and 4 only
EXTERNAL EXAMS

that are prerequisites for the courses they want to apply for
