STUDENT’S BOOK TAPESCRIPT (ZVUČNI ZAPIS UDŽBENIKA)

1 Learning Can Be Easy 1 I like to organise new words. Sometimes I draw mind maps, and I colour them in different colours. Sometimes I draw tables. I have different categories every time, for example: easy and difficult words, fruit and vegetables, etc. 2 I cut out small cards, a different colour for each unit. On one side of the card, I write a word in English. On the other side, I draw or stick a picture of the word, and sometimes I write the same word in Croatian. Then I use the cards to learn the words. I keep my cards in a small box. It’s my own dictionary! 3 My friends and I often study together. Sometimes, we make memory cards for new vocabulary. Or we play Hangman. If we don’t feel like playing, we just ask each other to translate new words, from one language into another and the other way around. Sometimes we ask our parents for help or we use a dictionary. 4 My parents kept vocabulary notebooks when they were at school. I think it’s a great idea! My vocabulary notebook is really simple. Technology and science are my favourite subjects. I would like to become an inventor one

Chris wakes up at seven and makes breakfast for everyone. He drives off to work at quarter

past eight. It takes him almost 45 minutes to get to work. He then puts on his swimsuit and

takes tourists rafting to the underground cave. He spends most of his morning in the cave.

He doesn’t get much rest because rafting underground is hard. After his lunch break, Chris

doesn't go into the cave any more. He is on land and checks the rafting equipment. Chris

comes home at quarter to six. But his working day is not yet over. He still has to walk the

dog! In the evening, we play board or card games or watch TV together.

My mum, Tanya, gets up at seven, and we all have breakfast together. Mum works for

several magazines. Sometimes she has photo sessions outside. I love her photos. They are

the reason I like photography. But sometimes she doesn't go anywhere. She stays at home

and works in her home studio. She does some housework in the afternoon. Then she writes

her cooking blog. It’s very successful! She doesn’t make lunch because Matt and I have lunch

at school, and Chris eats at work. Later in the afternoon, Mum spends some time with Matt

and me. She sometimes helps us with homework. Then she makes dinner.

Ella: My favourite season is winter. During winter break, I always take a Māori class. I learn

the Māori language. We sing and dance. Matt and I sometimes do the haka together at

home. I have to say he’s better at it. I also learn how to make traditional Maori decorations

from wood.

Ella: It’s time for you to meet my second family. They have a sheep farm. I usually spend

every other weekend with them. My dad, Mark, picks me up on a Saturday morning and

takes me to the farm. Lots of my friends think life on the farm is boring, but it’s actually

never boring! I’ll tell you more later. I love going there, mostly because of Jenny, my half-

sister. But I never call her “half-sister”, just “sister”. Jenny and I always have so much fun! I

miss her when I don’t see her. My stepmum, Rose, is also very cool. And she makes the best

Pavlova in the world!

Ella: On the farm, everyone wakes up early. We usually have a big breakfast because you

need a lot of energy for the day. Life on the farm is not easy. There is always something to

do. You have to work in the fields, feed the animals and clean after them. Dad and Michelle

have almost no free time before evening. Jenny and I help to feed the animals in the

morning. Later we help with lunch. But afternoons are just ours! We often visit a local horse

farm and ride horses. They are such beautiful animals! In the season, I sometimes help Dad

with the sheep-shearing. I don’t like it that much, to be honest. We almost never go out in

the evening, except for the big spring dance. We stay at home, talk and play games. Life on

the farm is rarely exciting, but I love being on the farm with my second family, and I always

want to come back the moment I leave.

Ella: In our house everybody has their responsibilities when doing housework. Every day,

Mum goes to the market and makes dinner. At weekends, she does the shopping and the

laundry. Chris walks and feeds the dog in the evening. After dinner, he does the dishes. Chris

also cooks and mops the floors at weekends. Matt and I make our beds in the morning and

help in the kitchen in the evening. Matt sets the table, and I clear it. I also help Mum make

dinner. At weekends, Matt and I clean our rooms. He hoovers the carpets round the house,

and when I’m home I water the plants. Don’t think that’s an easy task! There are lots of

plants in our house!

Ryan: My school starts at 9 am so I usually get up at 8. First, I have breakfast and then I get

ready for school. My school is two bus stations away from my house, so it’s too far to walk.

That’s why I usually go to school by bus. The bus leaves at 8.40 but I have to be at the station

at 8.35. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes. Sometimes when it’s warm and sunny I go to

school by bike. On the way to school I pass by the skate park, the post office and my dad’s

office. It’s a boring journey but at least I have fun with my friends on the bus.

Ryan: Like many Americans, my family lives in a two-storey house. On the first floor, there is

a kitchen, a dining room, a huge living room, and a toilet. Living room is the heart of our

home. There are three large bedrooms on the second floor and two bathrooms. One

bedroom is mine, one is my parents’ and one is for our guests. There is a small front yard

with a garage. There is also a big back yard. We have barbecues there when the weather is

nice.

1 This thing is my favourite! I use it when I don’t have to study for school. It’s next to the TV,

on the chest of drawers.

them around and sit any place you want.

4 I don’t use this for playing games only. I use it for studying, too. It’s on my desk. It’s silver

7 I keep my Lego blocks here. They are my favourite toys. It’s under my bed.

Narrator: Hot dogs are on the list of top 10 streets foods. There are many recipes for

preparing them. Chicagoans are proud of their Chicago-style hot dog. Hot dogs are usually

eaten with mayonnaise and ketchup, but not in Chicago! So, how do Chicagoans do it? Well,

first you need a bun and a frankfurter. Then spread some mustard on the frankfurter. Finally,

top it with these vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, onions and pickles. Bon appetite!

Everyone is in the television room. Mike Teavee is very excited. When he heard anything

could be sent to television, even people, he started running fast towards the big camera on

the other side of the room. He jumped towards it and pulled down the switch. There was a

strong flash of light and puff – silence. Mike Teavee was the first person to be sent by

television. Everyone in the room was shocked. Soon the picture of Mike Teavee started to

appear on TV. But he was pocket-sized. “He’s a midget!”, shouted his mother. She took tiny

Mike out of the screen and into her hands. “Please, bring him back to his normal size”, Mr

Teavee asked Mr Wonka. Mr Wonka knew how to solve the problem – with his special

machine for testing the stretchiness of the chewing gum. Mike went through the machine

and it worked! He was big again, just a bit too thin. But Mr Wonka’s Supervitamin would

solve that, too.

Mary: I love my mobile phone, so I usually write something like ‘I’m at the Cliffs of Moher.

Everything’s fine. We’re having a lot of fun!’ I don’t like calling people or sending postcards.

Pete: I like sending postcards because you can look at them after the trip and remember

things. They are more personal than texts and selfies. It’s a shame that people don’t send

them much any more.

Ben: I like taking pictures, so I usually just take a photo of myself and send it to my parents

or friends. It’s a quick way to tell them that I’m enjoying myself. A picture is worth a

thousand words, as they say.

Dear Mum and Dad,

Greetings from the Cliffs of Moher! It’s raining at the moment, but we’re having a great

time. The view from the cliffs is amazing! Right now, we’re looking at cute little puffins. They

are just as cute as in the photos! Still no sign of dolphins!

Kayla’s dad: I know. When animals attack people, we can see it all over the news. But most of the time they aren’t really dangerous to us. People are more dangerous than they are. Kayla: What do you mean? Kayla’s dad: Well, people eat lots of meat and fish. It’s OK if the animal is not endangered. But hunting endangered animals for meat is wrong. Mountain gorillas, for example. Hunters kill them for meat and trophies. They also catch baby gorillas and sell them as pets. Kayla: And some people hunt animals just for fun. Poaching is a big problem, isn’t it, Dad? Kayla’s dad: Of course. But people also endanger animals when they take parts of their habitat. We take their homes and build homes for ourselves. Kayla: And my science teacher says that their habitats change because of our actions. Pollution, for example. People make air, water and land dirty, and that can harm and kill animals. Kayla’s dad: That’s right. Also, contact with people is not always good for animals. Mountain gorillas and some other animals can catch human diseases and die of them. Kayla: How can we help these animals? Kayla’s dad: There are lots of people who try to help them, Kayla. For example, there is a list of endangered animal and plant species. It’s called the ‘Red List’. There are also lots of people and organisations that fight for animals every day. But it isn’t easy, and for some animals it’s too late. We’re also happy to have children from every corner of the world with us here. That is why

the official language of the camp is English. For the next seven days you will learn about

photography. After this camp, your photos will look even more brilliant. Every day you will

get a different topic for your photos.

We hope you’ll feel at home here. Every team will get a local boy or girl who will help them

during their stay in Croatia. If you don’t understand something, ask your guide for help. Now

Ryan: At the airport, waiting for my flight.

Mum: How was the last day of the camp?

Ryan: It was great, but also a bit sad. I got up early. Then we all had a nice breakfast. Then

we went to buy some food for the trip back home. After lunch, we had our last class. We all

got our diplomas. Then we packed our suitcases.

Mum: I hope you didn’t forget anything.

Ryan: I didn’t. I checked twice!

Mum: Did you say goodbye to your friends?

Ryan: Yeah, I did! Just before I went to the airport. It was difficult. There were lots of tears.

I’m going to miss them a lot!

Mum: I’m sure you’ll all stay in touch. Have a safe trip home! I can’t wait to see you!
