Year 10 Sport: Unit R046: Technology in Sport Scenario: As part of your work placement you are going to a technology research centre at your local university. The researchers at the sports technology laboratory research how technology is used in sport and its effects. As part of your role you have been given the task of researching how technology is used in sport and the effects technology has had on the sports industry.

Your task is to demonstrate your knowledge of how technology is used to enhance various aspects of sport.

Session 1 and 2: Enhancing Performance Athlete Performance

Technology is used to enhance athletes' performances at all stages – before, during and after events. It may be used by the athletes' support teams, such as coaches, medics and

technicians, as well as by the athletes themselves.

Technology plays a key part in how sport is played and watched. Increasingly, it means that officials, spectators and the media are interconnected during performances.

Technology shapes how officials manage a performance. For example:

1) Communicating microphones = to consult with other officials on and off the pitch

2) Decision Making = playback facilities to watch events from different angles

3) Ball Tracking = allows for the ball to be minutely tracked to ensure accuracy of decisions

4) Scoring laser technology = to measure jumps and throws more accurately

5) Time Keeping = shot-clock in basketball to speed up play and keep it exciting

6) Record Keeping = computers to track points and faults for multiple athletes at once

Examples of technology being used to enhance game play:

1. False starts

In track athletics, if an athlete moves before or within 0.1 seconds of the gun being fired, they have false-started. The race is then stopped and the offending athlete is immediately disqualified. Because this judgement is so critical, at elite events motion sensors are built into the athletes' starting blocks and connected to the starter's gun by a computer. Before 2009, athletes could have one false start before disqualification. This led to gamesmanship and frequent re-starts. The rule was changed to benefit officials, spectators and broadcasters but has seen some controversial disqualifications of 'star' runners.

Session 3: Enhancing Game Play

Page 7: Year 10 Sport Ark Globe Academy Remote Learning Pack Phase II 10 PE... · for case studies of technology being used to enhance performance, making sure you have an example for each

The 2011 World Athletics Championships in South Korea were dubbed the 'false start championships'. Lane 5 sits empty after the disqualification of 100 m sprinter Usain Bolt for a false start

2. Planning Strategy

Technology helps performers to review their tactics and their opponents' to work out what they need to do to improve and formulate a strategy.

For example, ProZone is used to analyse most Premier League football matches and Hawk-Eye is used to support officials' decision-making in cricket, tennis and football.

Session 5 and 6: Spectatorship

Watching sport no longer means sitting passively at home or in a stadium. Technology has enabled spectators to have a more active part in events. For example:

camera coverage – remote-controlled and micro-cameras provide more angles, track individual athletes or provide a performer's viewpoint

statistical information – on individuals, match play and past performances is available on-screen or at the click of a button during play

interactive software – apps offer access to merchandise, information, competitions, games and voting through links on tickets and programmes or via downloads

digital media – means that sports fans can follow a wide range of amateur and professional sports in a huge variety of ways

social media – allows fans to have a personal link with their sporting heroes and share views with others across the world

Sports exist in a competitive world. Individual sports compete against each other to attract participants, coverage and funding, and sport as a recreational

activity has to compete against digital pastimes, such as social media, television and gaming. The more people who play a sport, the more likely that sport is

to gain funding, either through grants, such as the National Lottery, or sponsorship. Similarly, sports with lots of followers are more likely to attract media

coverage and sponsorship.

Research published in 2015 by the Future Foundation, conducted on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust, warned that PE lessons need to use digital technology

to make sure that young people are motivated to take part. Other national sports organisations, such as Sport England and sports coach UK, also argue for the

need to use technology to attract and retain youth and adult participants in sport.

Technology can help to increase a sport's participation and profile. For example:

wearable technology – encourages participants to log their levels of activity, count the calories they burn and log their personal best times

game-style apps – motivate people by setting challenges and rewarding achievements

social media – enables clubs to promote sessions cheaply, individuals to share their experiences or teams to gather support

Case Study: This Girl Can

In 2015 Sport England launched a nationwide campaign to increase participation in sport by girls and women. Social media was a key player in promoting

and extending the campaign. Within weeks of its launch over 23 million people had watched the film on YouTube and Facebook and it featured regularly on

Twitter, with sports promoting opportunities and women and girls sharing their achievements. A follow-up app enabled participants to download their own

photos on to the inspirational poster templates.

The groundbreaking campaign was based on a series of inspiring images of and slogans by real women and girls

Disadvantages of using technology for

spectatorship

More engaged in the sport

Detracts from actual play

More informed about rules, players etc

Reduces the atmosphere at live events

Have a direct link to athletes

Reduces interest in grass roots events that aren't supported by technology

Increases spectator/broadcaster costs

Enables trolls to attack individual athletes
