Year 10 Independent Learning Autumn 1

Independent Learning
Guidance
At Ark Boulton, we are dedicated to helping our young people to develop a love
of learning and to providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge
needed to reach the career of their choice. The daily independent learning
programme at Ark Boulton will help to equip our students to develop vital
study skills needed to be successful during their time at the Academy and
beyond. Furthermore, all independent learning activities are based on
knowledge retrieval from the previous year- a strategy which has been shown
by numerous researchers to significantly improve student learning.
What does my child need to do to complete their independent learning?
This booklet has different 30 minute independent learning tasks for all
subjects for the first half term. Every subject has created a different task each
week to recall learning from the previous school year or topic. Students will be
informed by their subject teachers as to which day their homework will need to
be handed in. All tasks need to be completed in the back of their subject
exercise books or on a task sheet which will then be glued in to the back of
their books. It is the student’s responsibility to be organised and take their
subject books home on the appropriate day of the week. The independent
learning booklets can also be found on the school website for easy access to
any tasks with internet links.
How do I support my child with their independent learning?
As well as supporting your child by providing a quiet space for them to
complete their independent learning, please carry out a daily check on the
quality of the work that your son/ daughter has produced and sign in the
appropriate place. If you are in any doubt that the presentation or detail of the
work is not up to standard, do not hesitate to advise your child to reattempt
the task.
We thank you for your continued support regarding independent learning.
Should you have any questions please feel free to contact your child’s Form
Tutor or Achievement Leader.

French Week 3:
Use the following link to practise places in town:
quizlet.com/16878455/french-vocabulary-places-to-go-flash
Read the information about the town of Avignon:
1. Find the synonyms 2. Fill in the gaps in the text.
Avignon

Religious Studies Week 1: The Creation
Use the information and websites below to help you
complete the tasks below.
The Christian creation story is similar to that of the other Abrahamic
faiths; in this story we read that God created the earth in 6 days and
rested on the 7th. This story, or creationist view, is in direct
contradiction to the scientific "big bang" theory. The creation story
reveals a lot about God, e.g. his omnipotence and omniscience, but
also reveals information about the nature and importance of
humans.
Some websites which will help you are:
http://request.org.uk/restart/2014/05/29/the-creation-story/
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/rs/environment/christi
anitybeliefsrev2.shtml
https://www.biblegateway.com (please use the NRSV version for the
most sound translation)
Tasks:
1. Summarize the 6 days of the creation story in Genesis.
2. Describe other responses to the creation story/explanations of creation.
3. Explain what the creation story reveals about the nature of God and
humans.
4. If God created the planet, how do you think humans should treat it?
Why?
5. Copy out Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:26 and explain what they both
mean.
79
Religious Studies Week 2: The Fall of Man
Use the information and websites below to help you complete the tasks
below.
Although the world was created perfectly by God, this wouldn't last long. Humans
were created with freewill (the ability to choose to do whatever they wanted) and
would soon be responsible for 1) going against God and 2) allowing sin to enter the
world. Prior the first sin the world was perfect, but soon after sin entered it became
wicked and evil. There were many consequences of sin, all of which would last until
Jesus' crucifixion made it possible for man and God to be at one again.
Some websites which will help you are:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/beliefs/originalsin_1.shtml
https://www.bbc.com/education/guides/zhmhgk7/revision/3
Tasks:
1. Summarize the story of the Fall of Man and explain why it happened.
2. Explain what the world was like before sin (think back to the creation story)
and what it became like after the first sin.
3. Why might some Christians say that the first sin was allowed to happen? Why
do some Christians think there is evil and suffering in the world?
4. What virtue should Adam and Eve have shown in the Garden of Eden when
tempted by the Devil? Why?
5. Explain what Christians think needed to happen for humanity's sins to be
forgiven?
80
Religious Studies Week 3: The Nativity
Use the information and websites below to help you complete
the tasks below:
The Nativity is recognized by all Christians and in the liturgical year on the run-up
until Christmas. This is perhaps the most important event in Christianity (alongside
the crucifixion and resurrection) because it allowed Jesus to live (for God to become
flesh) and meant that he could 1) minister to the people and 2) eventually atone for
humanity's sins (past, present and future).

Tasks:
1. Who told Mary that she was going to give birth to a Son? Why was
this news shocking to Mary? Why is this angel also important in
Islam?
2. Summarize the events of the nativity story,
3. What virtues does the nativity story demonstrate? Why?
4. Why is the birth of Jesus important to Christians?
5. Outline the different ways Christmas is celebrated today.
81
Religious Studies
Week 4: Jesus' last days
Use the information and websites below to help you complete
the tasks below:
Luke 22-24 contains the last days of Jesus' life. For Christians this is
really important to read and understand because it reveals a lot about the
character of Jesus and allows them to understand the suffering and pain
that Jesus went through to forgive humanity for their sins. For example, it
reveals that Jesus is omniscient as He is able to say who will betray Him
and omnibenevolent because He gives His own life so that people may be
forgiven. As this is so important to Christians this is reflected in the
liturgical calendar, more specifically in Holy Week and the services held
as part of it.
Some websites which will help you are:
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22-
24&version=NIV
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/holydays/holyweek
_1.shtml
Tasks:
1. Make a timeline of the 5 key events in Luke 22-24 (Jesus' last days) You must
describe each key event in 2-3 sentences.
2. Explain how Holy Week reflects the events of Luke 22-24.
3. What three things does Luke 22-24 reveal about the nature of Jesus?
Support with a SoWA.
4. Define salvation and atonement. Explain how Jesus allowed both of
these to happen.
82
Religious Studies Week 5: Resurrection and Ascension:
Use the information and websites below to help you complete
the tasks below:
After Jesus was crucified, Christians believe that He rose again after 3
days; death could not defeat Jesus as He was God incarnate (as flesh).
After Jesus revealed Himself to people to prove that his resurrection was
real, He ascended into Heaven. Commonly Christians refer to this when
they say the Nicene Creed ('He is seated at the right hand of the Father'),
but this is also referred to in hymns and scripture.
Some websites which will help you are:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/learner-english/
https://www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=resurrection
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/rs/death/chbeliefrev2.shtml
Tasks:
1. Define the terms resurrection and ascension.
2. Explain what resurrection reveals about the nature of God (Jesus).
Support your explanation with a SoWA.
3. What does Jesus' resurrection and ascension allow Christians to
believe in? Why?
4. What did Jesus' death make up for? Copy John 3:16 and explain
what it means.
83
Religious Studies Week 6: Booklet
Use the research and work completed so far to create a
leaflet on 'the Story of Christianity':
Christianity is a really broad religion and some of the things that
Christians do or believe don't make much sense unless you have
context for the beliefs or practices. The information to be
included below will allow you to know 'the Story of Christianity'
and contextualize some of the things that Christians believe or do
throughout your study this year.
You must include:
1. A brief introduction to Christianity or a fact-file (e.g. Holy
book, number of followers, key beliefs and figures, etc)
2. A summary of the creation story and the fall, explaining how
this impacted humanity.
3. A summary of the Nativity story and an explanation why
Jesus' birth was important.
4. How Jesus atoned for the first sin (the fall) and all sins after
this including an explanation of how this led to both
salvation and atonement.
5. Important religious teachings (Sources of Wisdom) that back
your points and arguments up.
84
