INTRODUCTION Yanchep Lagoon Primary commenced in January 2018 after the closure of Yanchep District High School
whose students became members of either Yanchep Lagoon Primary or Yanchep Secondary College. The Pri-
mary students have remained on the District High School site and will look forward to a replacement of many
building in 2019/20 rebuilding program.
Having transitioned from one school entity to another the school retained much of the character and heritage
of the “old” District High School but is now firmly focussed on Primary education and the creation of a
unique Yanchep Lagoon Primary School culture. Our new school can be characterised through a number
of facets such as;
A caring nurturing environment with a holistic approach to the development of the child.
A relaxed and friendly environment that still retains a country feel.
An experienced and dedicated staff who work collaboratively to ensure positive whole school approaches
to curriculum and student care.
A well established and effective PBS system.
Well resourced classrooms.
Effective Literacy and Numeracy programs.
A well treed green welcoming environment.
In addition we also offer specialist programs to support and develop children eg.

A Tiny Tots pre Kindy program.
The use of a specialist Science teacher and built for purpose Science room.
Two LOTE programs in Indonesian and Noongar.

August and has participated in community based singing activities.

to support learning.

SCHOOL PURPOSE The Yanchep Lagoon Primary School purpose is to ensure through the partnering of all members of the school
community, that students develop understandings, skills and attitudes that enable them to fulfil their potential.
At Yanchep Lagoon Primary School our motto is “Dream, Believe, Achieve”. We aim to provide the best possible
education for each child who attends our school, which is reflected in our goals. The success of Yanchep Lagoon Pri-
mary School can be judged in fulfilling its purpose as expressed in our 4 key PBS expectations of;
I am a learner
I am respectful
I am responsible
I am safe
School Vision. Striving to create an environment which develops and nurtures a sense of belonging to the school community, with
emphasis on a holistic approach towards recognising our students as individuals, guiding them to reach their
potential goals and beyond.
3
SCHOOL CURRICULUM
We will follow eight major curriculum areas adopted nationally throughout Australia:
The Arts including Music, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.
English
Health and Physical Education
L.O.T.E. (Languages Other Than English) - Indonesian and Noongar
Mathematics
Science
Society and Environment
Technology and Enterprise
S.T.E.M. will also be a cross curricula focus for our school.
ENROLMENT
When enrolling at the school a Birth Certificate, Proof of Residency (ie current utility bill, tenancy agreement etc) and
Immunisation Record Card are required to be sighted before an “Application for Enrolment” can be accepted, as required
by the Department of Education. Eligibility for enrolment is then checked and parents will be asked to attend an interview
before official enrolment can take place.
It is important that the school is aware of any medical, physical or learning issues your child may have. These issues must
be noted on the enrolment form and, if a serious condition, discussed with the Administration and documentation
provided. An emergency contact person in the local area is also essential, especially if parents cannot be contacted when
their child is sick/injured etc.
Parents are also asked to notify the office of any changes to address/phone numbers etc. This is extremely
important. In the case of separated or divorced parents, custody arrangements or access rights to the child within school
hours must be documented in writing, to be held by the school. All information is strictly confidential.
KINDERGARTEN
Four year old students can attend Kindergarten five full days per fortnight on a 2/3 rotation (2 days 1 week/3 days
alternate week) at the on-site facilities at Yanchep Lagoon Primary School.
PRE-PRIMARY
All Pre-Primary - Year 6 attend five full days as this is the official start of compulsory education in W.A.
PRIMARY
Students move to specialist classrooms which could include Music, LOTE (Indonesian/Noongar), Science PE and Art,
while core subjects are taught in their year level classrooms.
ATTENDANCE
All students need to attend school on a regular basis to gain maximum benefit from schooling in order to optimise their
life opportunities. The School Education Act 1999 requires “compulsory aged students, as defined in the Act, to attend
school, or participate in an educational program of a school, on the days on which the school is open for instruction unless
an arrangement in writing has been entered into for a school”. Once enrolled students need to attend on a regular basis,
and positive attendance patterns should be fostered by all students. Lack of regular attendance does severely inhibit a
child's academic progress over time through the cumulative effect of missing key learning opportunities.
The Department of Education has amended the rule governing student vacation absence during the school term and
parents will now require the permission of the school Principal to allow an authorised absence from school. This also
acknowledges that parents are aware of the possible negative effects of student absences during term on their child’s
academic progress. Please visit the Front Office for a Holiday Request Form or download from our Website
MOVING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL
Parents should notify the Front Office of the date of departure and the new school so that a transition to the new school
can be done as efficiently as possible..

Association and support its activities. Meetings are held regularly please check the Yarner for dates.. In the past the
P&C Association has helped the School raise money for special purchases but this is not its only function. The most
important role of the P & C is to encourage communication between the parents and teaching staff (usually through the
Principal) and to foster parent involvement and ownership in the school. Membership costs $1 per year, payable at the
first meeting.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH: MEDICAL POLICY and INFORMATION
The Department of Education will assist students to access necessary health care while they are attending school or
school-based activities. The Department of Education will endeavour to ensure that health care standards are met,
that identified health risks are minimised and that good personal and environmental health practices are promoted.
The School provides health care within their level of experience for any student in an emergency situation if
professional assistance cannot be promptly accessed. Parents share responsibility with the school to ensure the
provision of appropriate health care for their child. This includes: providing accurate and relevant information about
their child’s health history, any medical conditions, health care needs and immunisation history at the time of
enrolment and throughout their child’s attendance at the school; advising staff if their child is bringing any
medication to school and completing a Health Care Authorisation; providing advice about their child’s health from a
health professional when requested by the Principal; providing written permission for a Principal or identified staff
member to be able to directly contact a health professional; assisting the school to develop a Health Care
Authorisation in response to identified health care needs or medical conditions.
A HEALTH CARE AUTHORISATION is an Agreed Management Plan developed by parents, the School Principal
and relevant medical information. This describes the assistance or health care procedures that may be required whilst
a student is at School.
ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION: The School will comply with parent requests for their child to be
supervised or assisted in the administration of medication. Parents are required to provide the School with written
information about the following: the reason for taking the medication; details including the name of the medication,
dosage, when it must be taken and any other relevant information; whether the student is able to self-medicate or if
staff supervision is necessary. Each time a student takes medication at school a record will be made and stored as part
of the student’s health care records. Incorrectly labelled or out of date medication or medical equipment that is not in
good working order will not be accepted for use by staff. Short Term Medication and Long Term Medication
require completion of Health Care Authorisation Forms prior to administration of medication.

STUDENT SAFETY Motorists should observe the special speed limits (40kms/h) on Primary Road/Lagoon Drive and should use the
“Kiss ‘N’ Drive” whenever possible and be considerate in their own parking when dropping off and picking up
students. Parents are asked not to use the staff car park or the school driveway for the purpose of depositing or
collecting children and observe the “One Way”, “No Exit” and “Disabled” signs. When crossing Lagoon Drive
please use the crosswalk opposite St Ives Drive.
SPORTS CARNIVALS Inter-Faction Competitions are usually held each year for Athletics and Cross Country prior to the Interschool
Competitions. Students earn points for their Faction and by acquiring "Dojo Points" for good behaviour and effort
at any time of the year. Please check the “Yarner’ closer to the events for dates.
Interschool Carnivals: Moore Districts School Sports
Interschool Cross Country (Gingin)
Primary Winter Carnival (Gingin)
Primary Athletics Carnival (Yanchep)
(Participating schools: Yanchep LPS, Yanchep Beach PS, Bindoon PS, Bullsbrook DHS, Gingin DHS, Lancelin
PS, Two Rocks PS ). Parents are always welcome to attend.
EXCURSIONS AND IN-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES (INCURSIONS)
Education does not consist only of what goes on within the classroom or on the school premises. Opportunities for
pupils to visit places of interest, to make observations about the community, or to carry out fieldwork are all of
educational value. When excursions are arranged every effort is made to keep the cost as low as possible and we
hope parents will support us in enabling their child to participate.
SCHOOL VISITS BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS Parents are welcome to come to the school to discuss their child’s progress or to ask about any matter that may be
troubling them. We are anxious to get to know all parents and to assist them in any way. The best way to see a
class teacher is BY APPOINTMENT and not while the teacher is busy with a class. Please contact the teacher
by note, or telephone the Front Office and a suitable time will be arranged. All parents visiting the school at any
time MUST go to the Front Office first.
SCHOOL REPORTS Reports are a useful means of conveying, in permanent form, our comments are on progress and will be emailed
twice a year at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. Since this means of communication is only one way, and
experience has shown that discussion is very profitable to teachers and parents alike, Parent/Teacher nights will be
arranged to allow parents and teachers to discuss each student. The School realises it is not always possible for
parents to come on the organised date and in these cases, individual appointments can be made at an alternate time
by telephoning the School.
Parents of Years 3-6 students should regularly have a look at their child's school work that is brought home and
reinforce in a positive manner the value of school and an education.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
The staff at Yanchep Lagoon Primary School have committed themselves to modelling and
explicitly teaching our students four specific behaviours to enable a positive, supportive learning
environment. These include:
I am Safe I am Respectful I am Responsible, and I am a Learner
We recognise and award our students when these behaviours are demonstrated by using the popular
website ‘ClassDojo’ to give points.
All students’ points will be monitored and tracked by the classroom teacher and the PBS team. Children
will be recognised in the following manner.
For every 25 points an individual earns, a token will be added to their Faction’s jar.
For every 100 points earned a student will progress through the certificate levels.
There are 3 – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Once a student has earned a Behaviour Pin, they are able to wear it to school as
part of their uniform each day.
Students are recognised at the School Assembly. On receiving a Behaviour Certificate, students will be
asked to simply stand when their name is called. Their certificate will be delivered to their classroom
during the day. However, parents are notified to attend the Assembly when their child has earned a
Behaviour Lapel Pin as this will be formally presented.
Your child brought home an invitation for you to join ClassDojo! It
is available as an App on your phone/tablet or you can access the
website on a desktop computer. You will be able to see throughout
the day if your child has been awarded any points and may find
that your class teacher chooses to share photos of your child and
their work with you.
Any photos or communication sent from the Teacher to you can
only be seen by you. Photos sent through the ‘Class
Story’ can be seen by all Parents connected to the class. Your child
will only appear in the ‘Class Story’ if you have given us photo
permission. This is a very safe and secure website utilised by many
schools.

HOMEWORK
HOMEWORK is purposeful learning, which is made up of two components:-
a) ASSESSMENT - any item a teacher uses to interpret a student's knowledge, understanding, skill, ability, and
attitude in relation to course objectives.
Examples: Formal set work assigned by a teacher to be completed by a certain date such as Homework
Sheet, Assignments etc.
b) CONSOLIDATION - the practise and revision of knowledge and skills covered in teaching sessions. This is
often referred to as Home Study.
Examples: Reading of texts/fiction/note-making
Completion of class work/class exercises
Preparation completion of assigned work
Systematic review of past work
Learning terms, procedures, vocabulary, formula, content.
c) TIME MANAGEMENT: It is essential that students develop a regular routine of homework/study. The
recommended minimum requirements are:
Years 1-5: No formal written work should be given until Year 6. The only work students need to do
before Year 6 should be Reading, Spelling, Oral Tables, "finding out" and collecting materials
for
projects.
Years 6 (i) Completion of class work (but not new work)
(ii) A little work for reinforcement, e.g. Maths.
Teachers should set work for individuals on a needs basis after evaluation of the
preceding unit of work. This remedial or extension work is dependent on the ability of
each student.
(iii) Projects or other long-term assignments.

SCHOOL CREED
This is our School,
Let peace dwell here,
Let the rooms be full of contentment,
Let love abide here;
Love of one another,
Love of mankind,
And love of life itself.
And let us remember,
Many hands build a school,
But many hearts make it.
