FROM THE RECTOR Dear Parents and Guardians I trust you and your families have had a most grace-filled Christmas and an enjoyable start to this new year. Congratulations to our Class of 2012 for their outstanding VCE results. I also extend my congratulations to their families and teachers who have nurtured these students in so many ways during their time at the College. As our Class of 2012 begin their tertiary studies and/or entry into workplaces we wish them every blessing and success. This year is the 135 th year of Jesuit education at Xavier College. Over the last 12 months the College Community reflected deeply upon the vision and mission of the College in preparation for our new strategic plan. As part of this plan, we have refreshed the College’s Vision and Mission Statements. Our new Vision Statement is: Xavier College aspires to set hearts on fire by an educational commitment to a faith that does justice. The College theme for 2013, Setting Hearts on Fire, is taken from this new Vision Statement. Throughout 2013 we will be exploring what this means for us as individuals and as a community. I congratulate and thank Denzil Furtardo (Year 12 Spinola) for his thought provoking banner design. The theme for this year is drawn from one of the resurrection stories in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 24:13-35). Following Jesus’ death, two disciples start to journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus feeling devastated by the death of their friend, Jesus. Whilst journeying the risen Jesus appears to them and walks with them helping them come to a deeper understanding of their experience of His life, death and resurrection. During the meal at the end of the story, Jesus makes Himself known to them through the breaking of the bread and they realised that during the journey their hearts were burning within them as a result of their experience of the risen Jesus. Our second source of inspiration comes from the friendship shared between St Ignatius of Loyola and St Francis Xavier. When St Ignatius missioned St Francis Xavier to go to India in response to the request of King John of Portugal, he is reputed to have said to Xavier “go set hearts on fire” with the love of God. Throughout this year, our theme invites us to reflect deeply upon what it is that inflames our heart. We are called to consider what gives us life and what inspires us to be people of loving action within our world. We are called to reflect upon what are our deepest desires, who are the people we love passionately and what are the issues that set our hearts on fire. I know for myself one of the things that sets my heart on fire is the education of young men and women and a desire to help them see the traces of God’s love within their lives. In the process, I hope that they learn to reflect deeply upon who they are and the gifts that God has given them so that they can continue to grow into people who are faith-filled with a burning desire for justice within our society and world. Sadly, in recent weeks we have also witnessed the devastation that fire can bring. So many parts of our country, and especially areas within our state of Victoria, have been devastated by bushfires. We know from experience that the devastation that occurs is not the final outcome. Experience teaches us that following fire new life and new growth comes, naturally within nature and, for us (Continued on page 2) Email: [email protected] Jesuit Web Site: www.jesuit.org.au Xavier Web Site: www.xavier.vic.edu.au Number 1– 30 January 2013 Phone: 9855 4100 Fax: 9853 3792 X A V I E R C O L L E G E A JESUIT SCHOOL Burke Hall .............. newsletter COMING EVENTS THURSDAY 31 JANUARY 2013 YEAR 5 & 7 Ipad / LAPTOP PICK UP FRIDAY 1 FEBRUARY 2013 STUDENTS RETURN SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP OPEN 8:30-10:00am AND 2:30-4:00pm MONDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2013 3YO KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION WEEK 4YO KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION WEEK BHMA MEETING 9.00AM TUESDAY 5 FEBRUARY 2013 4YO CLASSES COMMENCE WEDNESDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2013 BURKE HALL INFORMATION EVENING SATURDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2013 WELCOME COCKTAIL EVENING MONDAY 11 FEBRUARY 3YO CLASSES COMMENCE SECOND HAND UNIFORM SHOP OPEN 2:30—4:00PM TUESDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2013 YR 5 & 7 NEW PARENT / STAFF EXCHANGES WEDNESDAY 13 FEBRUARY BHFA MEETING 7.30PM TUESDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2013 YR 5 & 7 NEW PARENT / STAFF DISCUSSIONS WEDNESDAY 19 FEBRUARY KINDERGARTEN PARENT INFORMATION EVENING, 7:30PM WEDNESDAY 20 FEBRUARY YR 5 & 7 OUTDOOR EDUCATION PARENT INFORMATION EVENING TUESDAY 26 FEBRUARY YR 8 OUTDOOR EDUCATION PARENT INFORMATION EVENING

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians I welcome all families to the 2013 school year. I trust you have had a restful and renewing break over the summer. To all new families joining us for the first time, I hope the Xavier experience will be enriching and rewarding. Also, a very special welcome to all our new staff across the three campuses: Burke Hall Kostka Hall Grant Buckler Kylie Federici Lisa Carland Renee Heron (returning) Sharon David Stella Limberis Emma Hyland Ian McLean Andrew Kypriotis Lucy Stewart Julian Maccioni Chloe Woods Senior Campus Sally Bodo Susanne Burke Suzanne Dixon Georgia Gouros David Gregory Mary Hennelly Kate Johnston Lucy Lyford Elizabeth Moloney My thanks to all staff who have assisted with preparations for the start of the school year. A large number of ICT infrastructure changes have occurred in preparation for the expansion of the one to one computer program. At the end of the year, the College community was buoyed by the excellent results of the VCE Class of 2012. Xavier had the equal highest number of students in Victoria (Xavier Bisits, Samuel Crock, Marc Privitelli, An Jie (Andrew) Wang and Timothy Waugh) with the highest possible ATAR. This was a first in the history of the College. Also, to have a medium ATAR of over

as humans, through extraordinary resilience and generosity of people within our community. In 2009 our community experienced the devastating effects of fire with the destruction of our facility in Buxton. WE are able to empathise with those who have lost so much. So as we reflect upon what inspires our hearts throughout this year may we also continue to remember and pray for those who lives have been devastated in the recent fires. Let’s pray that they will be blessed with the grace and strength they need as they seek to rebuild their lives and reimagine their new hopes and dreams.

Wishing you every blessing

eight-seven placed more than half our boys in the top thirteen percent of the State. This is testimony to their gifts in partnership with the quality, dedication, talent and encouragement of their teachers from the beginning of their schooling to the end. The figure that I am most proud of is that the Year 12s of 2012 performed 26,000 hours of Ignatian service during their schooling. At our Staff Day on Tuesday, when launching our new strategic intent, I quoted Patrick Hayden (OX 1999) who was special guest at the 2012 Senior Campus Prize Giving Night. Patrick has gone on to be a very successful lawyer and has just returned to Australia after many years prosecuting Bosnian/Serbian war criminals in the International Court of Justice. Patrick shared one of the great passages of inspiration he received at Xavier. It occurred on his first night as a boarder when the then Principal, Fr Michael Stoney SJ, came up to him to welcome him to the College. Michael quite profoundly said the only thing we require from you here at Xavier is to open your heart and open your mind! Blessings and peace for the coming week.

“This is what the Lord asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6: 8 Loving God, help us to realise that true peacemaking can only become a reality in our world today if it is first undertaken in our hearts. We ask for the gifts of civility and charity, so that we can treat others with respect and love.

We ask for the gifts of faith and hope to strengthen our spirits by placing our trust in You rather than ourselves.

We ask for the gifts of humility and kindness, so that we may put the deeds and interests of others ahead of our own.

We ask for the gifts of patience and perseverance to endure the long struggle for justice. We are in need of Your grace to redirect our hearts.

We are in need of Your hope to rekindle and sustain our passion for justice.

We are in need of Your wisdom that we might recognise anew Your presence dwelling within us, calling us to live as children of light and hope rather than of darkness and fear. We ask for all of this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BURKE HALL

Dear Parents and Guardians Hopefully you have survived the summer heat and have been unaffected by the bushfires that, regrettably, seem to be a regular feature of Victoria at this time of the year. As we listen to the news reports, no doubt many of our memories return to the traumatic times of 2009 and the hardship and loss so many families suffered. The courage and fortitude of the volunteers who battle these fires is truly inspiring. While not of the same magnitude, Lance Armstrong's admissions to prolonged doping certainly act as a poignant reminder that personal integrity and honesty are more valuable than any material wealth. Our College theme for 2013 is "Setting Hearts on Fire". It is this sense of having the courage to support those around you, to live with passion and concern, to inspire, that will guide our discussions, learning and endeavours. This year will prove to be a milestone for Xavier College with the introduction of personal mobile computing devices for our Year 5 and Year 7 students. In addition, upgrades have taken place to our network infrastructure over the holiday period and additional computers have been made available to our Year 6, Year 8 and Early Years students. To those members of our community who are commencing their association with Xavier College this year - a special welcome. This is the start of a lifelong relationship, and while it may seem daunting at first, you will find great support from the staff and fellow parents, especially from the Burke Hall Mothers' and Fathers' Associations. To those returning, I trust you are feeling refreshed and looking forward to the opportunities that will present themselves. On Wednesday 6 February, commencing at 7:30pm our Burke Hall Parent Information Evening will be held in Garnet Hall. Please mark this important event in your diary as it is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet your child’s Homeroom teacher, Learning Leader, Dean, and fellow class parents. May you all have a blessed and fruitful year. Peace and best wishes,

Peter Cooper Director of Burke Hall [email protected]

FROM THE DEAN OF OPERATIONS

WELCOME BACK

This year, we again welcome many new families to Xavier College – Burke Hall across a range of year levels. I am sure the whole Xavier College community joins me in welcoming you to our school and I trust that your time is positive and enjoyable. I am certain that you will all quickly become part of our wonderful school community.

The commencement of each school year marks a very important time for the students. A focus in all classrooms over the first few weeks of school is the creation of a Year Level vision and the establishment of a positive, engaging learning environment where each child feels valued. Both the Year 5 and Year 7 levels participate in their Outdoor Education Program early in the term to assist with this transition to Xavier College.

Staff have been busy over recent weeks preparing for a smooth start to 2013 and I would like to thank you, the parents, in anticipation for your efforts in preparing your children for the start of the school year. We are very fortunate to have such an outstanding staff at Burke Hall who work tirelessly to provide the very best for each child, ensuring they are supported and their individual needs are considered. Throughout the year I hope we will share many opportunities of watching our students “shine”.

This year we welcome Mr Grant Buckler (LEC Coordinator), Ms Lisa Carland (Integration Aide), Ms Sharon David (Integration Aide), Ms Emma Hyland (Early Years - Prep), Mr Andrew Kypriotis (Tuckshop Supervisor), Mr Julian Maccioni (Integration Aide) and Ms Chloe Woods (Out of School Hours Care Coordinator) to the Xavier College staff. We also welcome back Mrs Kathy Mackieson and Ms Lina Radatti from Long Service Leave and Mrs. Vanessa Dillon from Maternity Leave. In addition, we welcome Mrs Jan Burnell (Library Assistant) and Ms Jane Kennedy (Year 8 Homeroom and Art) to their new roles at Burke Hall.

We are again counting ourselves very lucky to have enticed such capable people onto our staff. In the coming weeks, parents will have an opportunity to meet staff informally before and after school and also more formally by attending the upcoming Parent Information Evenings and the Year Level Camp Information evenings. The dates are listed in the diary section as well as on the school portal.

OUR SCHOOL’S VISION & MISSION STATEMENTS

The offerings of a Jesuit Education are life-long and provide a paradigm for schools with a common vision and goal; it is a preparation for an active life commitment in serving the faith that does justice, whilst travelling the journey of seeking to be men and women for others.

Xavier College is a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, as such the following Mission and Vision Statements need to be at the Centre of all that we set out to achieve in life.

VISION STATEMENT Xavier College aspires to set hearts on fire by an educational commitment to a faith that does justice. MISSION STATEMENT Xavier College is a Catholic school within the spiritual and educational tradition of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Our inspiration is Jesus Christ, the model of fulfilled human life. Our aim is excellence in education and the formation of reflective, compassionate and articulate men and women of Christian faith, hope and love, who will provide outstanding service and leadership in our world.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, MEDICAL CIRCUMSTANCES OR FAMILY SITUATION

Parents are requested to advise the school if a child’s family situation, medical circumstances, address or phone contact changes during the school year. It is important that all information is kept up-to-date in case the school needs to contact parents/guardians. Forms to update our asthma and allergic or anaphylactic reactions should have been received by parents if such medical conditions are recorded on our system. It is imperative such records remain up to date at all times to ensure we can adequately care for your child should there be a need.

RESPECTING OUR SCHOOL RULES

Leading into the new school year, we remind all students to wear correct summer school uniform. Sports clothing, if not already known, will be communicated at the commencement of each sport season. We appreciate that there may be exceptional circumstances for some students on a specific day, but it is expected that students wear their uniform correctly and with pride. Your support with these school expectations is greatly appreciated.

It was terrific to see so many children choosing to ride bikes and scooters to school last year, but we remind everyone that bikes and scooters aren’t to be ridden on the school grounds.

School commences each day at 8:40am. Arriving between 8.25am and 8.35am ensures a smooth start to the day for all. Dismissal is staggered to assist in a safe departure:

3.10pm Year 5 & 6 Dismissal 3.15pm Early Years Dismissal 3.20pm Year 7 & 8 Dismissal Staff at Burke Hall are positioned strategically around the school grounds during dismissal times. I need to ask all families during pick up and drop off times to exercise extreme care when driving on Nolan Avenue, Studley Park Road and Hodgson Street. Although staff supervise each of these areas, it is important to be reminded that students do cross the roads unexpectedly. Students who travel via bus to the Kew Junction will not be permitted on the buses in 2013. Students are asked to walk to the junction, as the public bus service cannot accommodate the volume of students travelling this short distance. This will also alleviate the problem of students who need to travel on the school bus beyond the junction being able to get a seat. For all students who require bus travel beyond the Kew Junction, they will need to obtain a bus sticker to be placed on to their Xavier student card or Myki card. This will need to be shown to the supervising staff before entering the bus. Stickers are available from the Year Level Coordinators.

BURKE HALL MIDDLE YEARS ABSENT LINE PLEASE RING BEFORE 9:00AM

Welcome back to school. I hope you had an excellent holiday with the family and those you love. As your son commences his 2013 school year I would like to wish him a very successful year. I encourage him to do his absolute best in everything that he does. I hope that he will embrace all learning experiences so that they can be used constructively later on when necessary.

As the Dean of Middle Years an aspect of my role is to ensure that the school makes every effort to meet the various needs of your son, whether it be his social, emotional or intellectual needs. To ensure success we rely on positive communication between parents, students and staff. We encourage the building of positive relationships and teamwork in order to achieve the ultimate goal of each student being the best that he can be. Should you have any concerns relating to any aspect of your son’s development, please communicate your concerns to his homeroom teacher who will communicate with the Learning Leader. While my door is always open, I encourage you use these channels of communication as a first point of communication. As a middle school we are committed to engaging and supporting our students in ways that inspire them to be successful and to achieve their best. We want to help them to be successful learners and to develop confidence, resilience, a love of learning and a respect for others. However, we cannot underestimate the importance of having high expectations of all our boys. You will find that Xavier College consistently reminds its students of the importance of striving for excellence in every aspect of education: personal, social, emotional and intellectual. Expecting our boys to do their very best is all that we can ask. Information regarding teaching and learning as well as the school’s restorative practice policy will be available in future newsletters, information evenings and on the school portal. I encourage all parents to make use of these communication methods. I recently came across the following prayer. It reminds us how important it is to spend time with our children. They’re only little once. Grant me the wisdom to guide them down the path that their feet should take. For I know that they can never turn back and walk those paths with me again. Give me the wisdom to guide their feet so that someday they’ll be able to walk alone. They’re only little once. Give me the time I need to enjoy them. For I know that after they’re grown, I’ll never have another chance to tell stories and pretend at tea parties. I’ll never have another chance to watch them in a school play or sing in church, or to see them catch that fish or score that first goal. Give me the time in life’s busy schedule to have fun with my children. They’re only little once. Let me be a loving parent. Let me correct and not punish, explain and not merely scold. Let me know when to correct, and how often, and when it’s best to just look the other way. Help me be patient and give a gentle hand to mould them into better people. They’re only little once. Let me be a good teacher and an even better example. Give me the right words and deeds to teach them. Help me to teach them about You and how to walk Your ways so that when they are old they will not depart from Your ways. For they’re only little one time, only innocent and trusting and pliable for a space of time, one minute in an eternity. Let me do my best for them while I have the chance. Author: Anonymous

As we prepare to embark upon a new school year, I would like to extend a heartfelt 'welcome' to all our students and their families and hope that everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer with family and friends. The change of pace that comes with the holiday break provides everyone with a time to recharge and gear up for a new school year. For those who are new to the Xavier community a special welcome and I trust that this time will be an exciting, fulfilling and rewarding experience for you and your family. For our students returning to Xavier College, it is a time filled with anticipation and excitement as they prepare to reacquaint themselves with friends, to develop new friendships, and to continue on their learning journey. Inevitably, the excitement and bustle of Early Years’ programs starting will give way to more comfortable and established routines as we progress through the term. During this time, and throughout the year, we will continue to maintain our strong focus on excellence across all areas of the curriculum and pastoral care. This is our core purpose and it is reflected through the unwavering efforts of the excellent staff who work with students and families every day of the year. BURKE HALL FATHERS’ ASSOCIATION

Greetings from the BHFA, The Fathers’ Association is keen to promote a year of fun and social activities for all families of Burke Hall. Firstly, I would like to thank Ray Mizzi, former president, and his committee for the fantastic contribution to the Fathers’ Association and to the school community. The Fathers’ Association’s purpose, amongst other things, is to:

provide an avenue for fathers to meet and become involved in the school community

to discuss the interests of students

to promote and provide assistance to the Xavier College community. Committee Meetings The Committee of the Fathers’ Association meets monthly and it is an open meeting whereby fathers are able to attend. Therefore, I encourage and welcome all fathers who wish to join the Association to come to some, if not all, of the meetings this year. The first meeting will be held at 7:30pm on Wednesday 13 February 2013 in the Board Room at Burke Hall. New members are welcome and if you intend on attending I ask that you arrive fifteen minutes early so we can complete the application form. Welcome Cocktail Party One of the first things you need to put in your diaries is the Welcome Cocktail Party. The Mothers’ Association has been planning the best and the biggest night ever held and I encourage all (and not just new) parents to attend. This year it will be held on Saturday, 9 February 2013 from 8:00pm to 11:30pm outside Wren House. Please see the Mothers’ Association section for more details. Father/Child Camp Program Please also note that bookings for the very popular father/child camps are open. The first two camps are: Year 5 15 - 17 March 2013 Phillip Island www.trybooking.com/38369 Year 7 23 - 24 March 2014 Lady Northcote www.trybooking.com/38376 For the Year 5s there are two optional surf lessons at 7:30am and bookings can be made for either or both days: Saturday www.trybooking.com/38372 Sunday www.trybooking.com/38375 All camps are very popular and places are limited so I encourage fathers to book early to avoid disappointment. If you have any queries please email [email protected] or contact Mark O’Connell (0408 110 093) for Burke Hall fathers or Damian Martin (0412 572 135) for Kostka Hall fathers. I wish you all a safe and joyous 2013. Hamish MacKinnon President BHFA 0417 117 161 [email protected]

NOTICEBOARD

PARENT COMMUNICATION WITH THE COLLEGE Xavier College continually seeks to improve its communication flow with all members of the Xavier College community. To achieve this end we ask all parents and guardians to observe the following protocol. All telephone messages and emails should be addressed to one person only. If parents wish to include other relevant parties in the circulation list, this should be done under the cc heading. Observance of this request will allow the College to coordinate its response efficiently and effectively and thus contribute to a speedy resolution of any concern. Who is the one person to whom a parent makes contact with? Over a pastoral / wellbeing concern, the Homeroom teacher should be the contact. Over a learning progress concern, the Subject teacher should be contacted. If the learning concern occurs in more than one classroom then the Homeroom teacher should be contacted. Only when these contacts fail to meet resolution or your concern is grave should Year Level Learning Leaders be the contact person.

All phone calls to Burke Hall Middle Years need to come through reception on 9855 4100

FROM THE XAVIER SOCIAL JUSTICE NETWORK

In 2013 XSJN is moving into a new phase in its life at Xavier College. The Network has a new Charter, a new structure and a new program for 2013. XSJN offers opportunities to be engaged in volunteer work with those in need, to reflect on our commitment and to raise our awareness of social justice issues. We are beginning the year with an invitation for all members of the Xavier community—parents, past parents, staff and Old Xaverians—to come and hear how you might be involved in 2013. We are offering an information session and welcome at each campus early in first term and everyone is welcome to come along. You may be new to Xavier College and know nothing about the Network. This is your opportunity to find out more. If you are not new to the College but would like hear about our new developments and how you might participate, you are also most welcome to come along. Times for these information sessions are: Kostka Hall: 9:00am 19 February 2013 Burke Hall: 9:00am 26 February 2013 Senior Campus: Dalton Room, 2:00pm 6 March 2013 Please put these dates in your diary and come along to any session that fits your timetable. If you would like to know more about XSJN and cannot attend at any of these times, please feel free to contact me on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesdays. Jo Dunin XSJN Coordinator 9815 4528 0418 548 900
