Material Properties and limitationsIt is highly recommended to 3D-print the X-clometer main body using the finest resolution (layer thickness) available. The ball-cavity texture must allow for a smooth travel of the ball bearing.

If ball-cavity surface is rough after printing, progressively finer grit sandpaper may be used to smooth the surface.

The porosity of FDM parts may present issues in applying and retaining the solder paste. Please consider using a sealing method (e.g.: epoxy coating, dipping, painting, etc.).

Common 3D-printed materials (e.g.: ABS, PLA) are often damaged by the high temperatures of autoclaving. If sterilization is required, please use other methods (e.g., ethylene oxide gas, hydrogen peroxide plasma, gamma radiation, etc.) or an alternative 3D-print material capable of withstanding autoclaving (temperature >121 deg Celsius).

AccuracyOversized clearances were used for the back cover cutout, the clip slot, and the magnet cavity. Design clearances were specified to allow for the use of lower accuracy 3D-printers, and allows for easier cavity epoxy filling during assembly. Adjust clearance values depending on your specific 3D-printer resolution and material selection.

Print OrientationThe X-clometer main body part was positioned with the ball-cavity facing up on the build platform of the FDM 3D-printer. This orientation was selected to help ensure smooth ball-cavity surface for smooth ball rolling (no support material or tray in contact with its surface).
