The Feature Race 1968-2016
The Feature Race was the first PCCCT blue ribbon event and has been held every year since its
inception in 1968. The course starts from the main street of Wynyard & finishes with a lap of West
Park Oval, Burnie. The length of the course was originally 11 miles. This converts to 17.6 km.
Despite the rise in prestige of several club races, the Wynyard to Burnie 17.6 km event remains the
pinnacle of professional distance running on the Coast. While the race has always started in
Wynyard's Goldie Street it has finished in different places, including outside the Burnie Surf Club.
Since 1968 the race has attracted some of the best runners in the State including Mike McKenna, Viv
Woodward, Leigh Taylor, Trevor Keating, Russell Foley and Dean Giblin. Russel Foley & Dean Giblin
came very close to snatching the course record in 1987. Mike McKenna is the only runner to have
won the race three times and holds the race record of 53:26 in 1974.
Ron Nielson was the first winner to collect the sash and trophy after crossing the line in 1968. Public
support has increased over the years with many onlookers lining the highway at key vantage points to
view family and friends competing as well as following the elite athletes.
The finish and now running the course all the way on the left side of the road are the only significant
changes in the race's history when those first runners crossed the line in front of the Burnie Surf
Lifesaving Club in North Terrace. Current winners break the tape after a lap of the West Park Oval.
Devonport’s Anne Ketelaar became the first female runner to complete the distance in 1981 at the
age of 42. Penguin's Lyn Saint-John became the first female runner to win the race in 2010. In doing
so, Lyn broke the 19-year-old women’s record when she ran the course in 65:41 at the age of 41 to
better Patricia Thorpe's 1991 time of 66:00 at the age of 32.
I’ve been a member of the club since 1986 and have witnessed quite a few victory speeches. Some
winners give candid admissions about the tactics they used and sometimes waiting for several years,
for a mark that put them in with a chance of winning the ultimate prize.
Some runners will try every trick in the book to win. There are several terms used when tryin to outwit
the handicapper, foxing, and running with the handbrake on. One winner I spoke to called it professional
running. These practices make it more difficult for the handicapper to handicap the race fairly.
These statistics are only possible because Barry Ling had the foresight to save every race sheet.
Before the race results were put online every race had to be typed into the Superbase app, which first
ran on my old Atari ST.
When I joined the club in 1986 all the results were done by pen & paper & put on display the following
week. I could see the benefits of using my database to collect this information & produce the results
sheets that we now take for granted. I wanted the printouts to include age, km. rate, lost bys & starts
which weren’t on the hand written results sheet but which is very easy to programme into the database.
I would like to have had everyones date of birth but this information wasn’t included on the early result
sheets prior to 1986. I still have 107 runners out of 865 who have finished the Feature Race I don’t
know the ages of. Having all the Feature Races on the computer makes it possible to now produce
these stats. The PC version of Superbase 3.2. I now use is no longer supported. It runs on an old
computer using Widows XP. All data generated is transferred into Exel & then transferred into Microsoft
Word. It’s time consuming but there is no other way to do it.
All statistics refer to the Feature Race only and that includes starts.

Some of the states best athletes entered this race in 1987 to try & beat Mike Mckena’s record time of 53:26 which had stood since 1974. Russell Foley came very close with a time of 53:37. Ten athletes finished the course in under 60 minutes. These records still stands 30 years later both for the course record & number under 60 minutes.
