LAKDHANAVI LIMITED
Case Study The diesel-fired power generation plant with a capacity of 168MW operating since 2003 More than 40 AES people working in Sri LankaCurrently, AES Kelanitissa has the capacity of producing 168MW of electricity and theplant uptime is a top priority. Thus, making a maintenance program like TOMMS anessential part of ensuring it. We've used TOMMS Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) tohelp maintain AES Kelanitissa," relates Mr. Kamal, Team Leader Maintenance. "We usethe work order, preventive maintenance, and purchasing and inventory modules. The
system obtains maintenance input, produces work orders, and tracks work in process. Italso provides a variety of reports, including work status, equipment availability, and costand repair histories. Each piece of information is important when creating and executinga predictive, proactive maintenance program."When I arrive at work in the early morning, I receive the work orders that the night shiftoperators have written concerning any broken equipment. My first task is to send outmaintenance orders to our technicians to repair these parts or equipment. They willreport back to the TOMMS system what corrective measures were taken, what parts wereused, and how long it took to fix the problem. When finished, the system lets them knowwhere to go and what to do next." Preventive maintenance is very important at AES. Oncea month, the system generates an order to perform both vibration and oil analyses on thepower skids, including the turbines, generators and their gearboxes. AES knows what thelevels should be. Based on the results of readings, AES may or may not need to take one ofthe units down and change bearings or realign the skids before a failure occurs. The purchasing module generates POs for both stocked and non-stocked items, special
orders and services. It tracks open POs and generates a list of those that are past due. Most importantly, working in consort with the inventory module, the system assures thatPGV has parts and equipment when needed, including sufficient stock for scheduledprojects. In addition, the utility always knows what stock levels are."We also use Equipment History a lot," Mr. Kamal adds."These histories are very valuable. With this information, if something comes up, we can
refer to what has happened with this piece of equipment in the past. Is this the first time?Is this a continuing problem? How did it get fixed before? Was that successful and for howlong? The answers to these questions allow us to determine when it is most cost effectiveto fix something or replace it."
AES built, owns and operates AES
Kelanitissa, a diesel-fired 168 MW
power plant that satisfies 10% of Sri
Lankas energy consumption needs.
Located in the capital city Colombo,
the plant serves the area via the
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), a
utility company owned by the
government of Sri Lanka.
In February 2005, AES responded to
the tsunami crisis in Asia by
activating the AES Disaster Relief
Fund, collecting donations from AES
people around the world and
directing resources to the local
community in Sri Lanka.
Lakdhanavi Power Plant Purchase TOMMS (EAM) to maintain their 300MWatt CombinedCycle Power Plant in Muturajawela in Sri Lanka. The Lakdhanavi Plant was commission
in August 2008 and since then we've used TOMMS Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)to help maintain Lakdhanavi Power Plant (LPP)," relates Mr Shankar Rao, SeniorCommission Manager. "After a couple of years of using TOMMS, it has increased visibility into some importantareas and weve been able to use that information to improve our performance. Theseimprovements have been brought about by using TOMMS to measure the departmentsMean Time To Repair (MTTR) and Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF). These areimportant engineering performance metrics that were rather cumbersome to record inearlier versions says Shankar. Using this information we are driving reductions inmachine downtime and engineers attendance time on jobs.
The Lakdhanavi Limited build , own,
operate and maintain a CombinedCycle 300 MW Thermal Power plant
at the land filled reclaimed area site
of Kerawalapitiya in the Gampaha
District. The power generated by the
plant will be transmitted through
the national grid owned by the
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
