THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF HELPING OTHERS In today’s second reading Paul offers a wonderful argument to his converts at Corinth for seeking to help those in need. He is dealing with a practical problem, arranging a collection for the poor of the church of Jerusalem; but as he often does, he develops an important teaching about Jesus to make his point. After asking that they show their faith by generous gifts, he reminds them of the “gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the Incarnation our Lord assumed our human nature, certainly becom-ing poor for one who is God. The ultimate gracious act of this poverty was going to the cross with all its ter-rible sufferings. By this act of poverty we definitely become rich. Now our sins can be forgiven; we can share in the very life of God through the sacraments; we can attain eternal salvation! Copyright © J. S. Christ the King Mission Statement The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a wel-coming, vibrant faith community building the king-dom of God through our many ministries. We cele-brate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangeliza-tion, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

First Thursday Exposition / Adoration will take place on July 5, and August 2

from 9:00am until Midnight. All other Thursdays during

Summer, the church is open for adoration of Blessed Sacrament in the

tabernacle from 9am-8pm.

There are many Mass times available for the month of July. Please contact Carol at the rectory, 630-629-1717 x4

Thank You, Lord, for the courage and selfless service of our military troops. May my loved one and all who serve around the world turn to You for rest and protection. Keep them safe from all hidden dangers and deadly diseases. May they not fear the terrors of night or the dis-aster that strikes at midday. Order Your angels to protect them wherever they go. Keep their feet from slipping, and hold them securely in Your strong right hand until they are safely home. (Ps. 91:1-11, 121:3, 139:10)

On behalf of Father Peter and Mr. Javier Aguilera, I would like to thank all those who so graciously stepped forward to volunteer at the White Elephant Sale in June! It was a great success, raising over $7,000! It takes a lot of volunteers to help set up, and run the sale for three days and clean up afterward! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Mrs. Placey.

Have you noticed the flowers? We hope you have enjoyed the flowers and plants that the Council of Catholic Women planted in front of the PLC over the last few years. Fr. Peter asked the CCW to plant a garden so that all our parishioners could enjoy the natural beauty of the area leading to our worship areas. The annuals for this season have been planted…. now we need some help maintaining the garden! If you are able to help weed the garden and deadhead the plants during a specific week, we would really appreciate it. Please call Mary Ellen Clish at 630 495-1339 to sign up or to get more information. Parish service project watering parish plants a project for the family.

Christ the King Parish will participate in “Habitat for Humanity” service project. This is for anyone over the age of 18, 16-17 with parent supervision. If you would like to support Habitat for Humanity and are not able to work, financial contributions are always welcome.

Christ the King will be hosting the Restore Truck here at Christ the King parish in the lower parking lot on Saturday, July 14 from 9am until Noon. This is our contribution to Habitat for Humanity.

If you need assistance to get any of the items listed on the right to Christ the King on July 14 please call Eileen at 630-396-6076.

I want to thank Judy Knox for being my side-kick on these two projects. I could not have done it without her assistance in so many ways and Don Knox who was always there carting the heavy boxes of bulletins around. Also Carol Clishem and Sherry Rochford, thank you for your patience with me and my endless questions and arrangements! Bill Runge and Eileen Maggiore, thank you for making sure all the an-nouncements were made before the Masses, oh and thank you Pat LeBeau and Judy Knox for getting the articles in the bulletins at the right time etc. Javier Aguilera, thank you for always answering my ques-tions about when the church would be open etc. Thanks also go out to Barb Pizzotti, Mary Ellen Storrs, Florence Kaminski, Adrienne Forstneger, Diane Denn, Gerry Dean, Jan Golick, Michelle Iwinski, Grace Francl, MaryAnn Norton and Mary Ellen Clish who either helped stuff the bulletins or hand out the roses/carnations after the Masses. It's not the person who chairs the project, it's all the people together that make the project successful and I certainly had great people working in all aspects of both these projects that made them successful!!!! Thank you and God Bless, Barb Collins

Christ the King Pastoral Parish Council For the past year I have had the honor or chairing the Christ the King Pastoral Parish Council. I have enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about my faith, what is happening at Christ the King parish, and working with wonderful parish leaders. The first thing I had to learn was, what is a Pastoral Parish Council? First of all, I learned that this council is not a decision making body nor a clique of parishion-ers who runs the parish. Rather, the Pastoral Parish Council at Christ the King is an advisory body that works with the staff and parish leaders to coordinate the efforts of the parish and encourage the partici-pation of the parishioners in parish events. According to the parish handbook, the purpose of the Pastoral Parish Council is as follows:

The purpose of this Council shall be to foster pastoral activity in Christ the King Parish according to the norms of Church law, the directives of the Bishop of Joliet, and the needs of the parishioners of Christ the King Church. The Council advises and makes recommendations to the Pastor. In this regard, the Pastoral Council provides a forum for addressing three aspects of parish life:

Communication and coordination among the various parish groups and activities; Consultation between the pastoral staff and the various parish organizations; and Long-term strategic planning and policy direction for the parish as a whole.

The Pastoral Parish Council is currently made up of 8 individuals. For the coming year we will meet on the 1st Tuesday of every other month beginning in August at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. We welcome anyone who is interested in serving on the Council to contact me or Deacon Frank or Father Peter, or simply come to a Council meeting and see firsthand what we do. In order to fulfill the threefold mission of the Parish Council, the Parish functions in three overlapping and synchronized areas:

Ministry: Individual parish groups and other related organizations engage in pastoral activity for their members and the whole parish, in accord with the nature of their ministry or service; Commissions: The commissions coordinate pastoral activity in their areas of ministry. A special at-large commission or core teams may be developed that will service multifaceted tasks as the needs are defined by the Council on an annual basis; Council: The Pastoral Council fosters pastoral activity in the parish as a whole, with an emphasis on long-term goals and strategic planning, rather than the day-to-day operation of the parish and its ministries.

For the next four weeks, there will be articles in the bulletin to describe each of the 4 Commissions at Christ the King and how the Ministries and Organizations of the parish fit into the leadership structure. It is the hope of the Pastoral Parish Council, the staff and the Commissions, that this awareness of our parish activities will encourage more volunteers and greater participation in the parish life at Christ the King. During the month of August we will begin recruiting volunteers to lead and assist the parish commissions.

If you have any questions or would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me or any one of the current mem-bers of the Council: June Penas, Matt Novak, Joe Iapichino, Michele Schmitt, Jan Benshoof, Deacon Frank Lillig and Father Pe-ter. I thank each of these Council members for their time and willingness to serve the Pastoral Parish Council.

True Freedom: On Protecting Human Dignity and Religious Liberty eBook released June 19.

NEW YORK CITY--Society faces a choice between true human dignity and a false concept of freedom culminating in the “culture of death,” New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan explains in his new eBook. This inhumane culture springs from “deeply rooted social, philosophical and ethical tendencies that, unfortunately, often find their expression in our laws and in our attitudes toward others,” the cardinal writes in True Freedom: On Protecting Human Dignity and Reli-gious Liberty, released June 19. Published by Random House Digital, True Freedom is available for 99 cents. “To this culture of death,” he writes, “the Church boldly and joyfully promotes the culture of life.” In a work of just over 5,000 words, Cardinal Dolan develops Blessed John Paul II's understanding of the natural law, whose God-given principles are known through reason and confirmed by faith. They are the source of the Church's teaching on subjects such as human life and religious freedom. Cardinal Dolan's eBook aims to propose these principles anew to a culture suffering what the late Pope called an “eclipse of the sense of God and of man.” “In only the past few years,” the New York archbishop states, the U.S. has experienced “rampant disregard” for religious faith and human dignity, as shown in the approval of embryonic research, the torture of prisoners, disregard for the definition of marriage and the federal contraception man-date. “We can see that there is a loss here of a sense of truth and objective moral norms, rules of conduct that apply al-ways to everyone, everywhere,” the cardinal observes. In place of the natural law, society has begun to substitute “pragmatism, utilitarianism and consumerism,” all of which have no higher goal than the satisfaction of individuals' per-sonal preferences. These ideologies, Cardinal Dolan explains, have tragic consequences, especially when applied to is-sues of human life and moral conscience. In his own Archdiocese of New York, 40% of all pregnancies end in abortion. “And any effort to curtail this unfettered access to abortion,” the cardinal notes, “is turned back by a culture that places a greater value on 'what I want,' 'when I want,' 'because I want' than it does on life itself.” Moral conscience, meanwhile, is also threatened by a governing philosophy that makes no distinction between deeply held principles and passing desires. Cardinal Dolan cites Pope Benedict XVI's famous 2005 warning against a “dictatorship of relativism … whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires.” He also highlights an address delivered by the Pope to German law-makers in 2011. In that speech, the Pope spoke of a “dramatic shift” away from laws rooted in moral principles. In their place stands a “positivist conception of nature” that treats moral beliefs as nothing more than subjective, private prefer-ences. Citing the Pope's words to the German parliament, the New York archbishop notes that the separation of law from morality “fails to recognize the full breadth of human nature, and in fact both 'diminishes man' and 'threatens his human-ity.'” The real issue in all of these controversies, Cardinal Dolan suggests, is the competition between two visions of free-dom: one rooted in human dignity and the natural law, the other arising from efforts to treat morality as subjective and religion as irrelevant. Quoting Pope Leo XIII, the cardinal teaches that authentic freedom is “that freedom which most truly safeguards the dig-nity of the human person. It is stronger than any violence or injustice. Such is the freedom which has always been de-sired by the Church and which she holds most dear.” The eBook contains a set of questions addressed to the country at large, as a cultural and political “examination of conscience.” “Is genuine freedom,” Cardinal Dolan asks, “the license to do what we ought or the ability to do whatever we want? … Is law tethered to objective truth, or is it ruled by a 'dictatorship of relativism'?” “Should laws be tailored to suit changing wants, demands or recently discovered 'rights'?” the cardinal asks. “Or should wants, demands and novel rights be tempered by law to uphold the sacredness of life, the common good and the objective moral law?” As the country face these questions, the issue of religious liberty becomes especially urgent. “Churches and people of faith -- not exclusively Catholics and their bishops, although I would hope that we play a leading role – understand the inherent dignity of the human person and serve as a safeguard against attacks on that dignity,” the cardinal points out. “If we allow the human person to become a thing, and a human life to become a commodity that can be valued more or less depending on circumstance, political ideology or current whims,” he warns, “then we have embarked on a perilous path.” BY CATHOLIC NEWS AGENCY
