Segregated Bins Installation at Beaconhouse School System – Senior Gulrez Branch

Rawalpindi, December 19, 2011: WWF - Pakistan’s Green School Programme inaugurated colour coded dustbins at their pioneer Green School - Beaconhouse School System, Senior Gulrez Branch, Rawalpindi. Dr. Ejaz Ahmad, Deputy Director General, WWF - Pakistan was the Chief Guest at the event.

Garbage segregation is the first step in recycling waste materials. Segregation at source is the easiest and most effective way of segregating unwanted material. After waste is segregated it can be sold to recyclers for further processing.

This event serves as a platform for teachers, students and public as a whole to learn about the benefits of garbage segregation and an opportunity to integrate the segregation model into education institutes and more importantly into homes across Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ejaz Ahmad said that WWF - Pakistan aims to further enhance public awareness by engaging the youth in environmental education activities. The purpose of the programme was to engage school students and teachers in a structured awareness programme to foster a sense of individual responsibility and accountability in future generations towards nature conservation.

Green Students along with Chief Guest, Principal and representatives from WWF - Pakistan and BSS participated in the segregation of garbage and other environment oriented activities. WWF - Pakistan’s Green School Programme provided three colour coded garbage bins to the school to reinforce and facilitate garbage segregation.

Complex, Margalla Campus, Primary F-7/2, Primary F-7/3, Senior Gulrez Branch, Frontier

Campus, Peshawar and Abbottabad are benefiting substantially in terms of enhancing

their comprehension and vocabulary skills by participating in the Spellathon.

Designed to take a student on a developmental voyage of scientific discovery the booklets

ease a child into understanding various segments of the environment and make them

realise their individual roles to mitigate impact on the earth. Most of the booklets focus aim

to explain that environments are integrated, overlapping and co-dependent.

The booklets were disseminated amongst the registered students of grade one to nine

who then prepare for a spelling competition while at the same time learning about the

environment. Non - Green students can enrol for the Spellathon while Green Students

receive it free of cost.

Green Corner

BSS – Senior Gulrez, Primary F-7/2 and F-7/3 set up an interactive space on their

respective branches. The Green Corner is an interactive free zone to express Green

Views. It consists of a plain soft board at a frequently visited spot in the Green School.

Articles, news, pictures of the event and fun facts are displayed on the board. Activity

sheets and information are also provided to the students at the corner.

This innovative activity will add fun to the routine activities and will introduce sense of

freedom of speech about green issues in the country.

Waste Free Lunch

Beaconhouse School System, Senior Gulrez Branch, Primary F-7/2 and Abbottabad

Branch have been observing ‘Waste Free Lunch’ every Tuesday. The students bring their

lunch in reusable boxes, items which they are required to take back home, wash and

reuse. The idea is to discourage the use of the polythene and paper bags, reducing waste

and using products with minimal packaging. This activity not only aimed at educating

students, but is also very effective in sending a message to parents regarding using items

with less packaging material.
