Writing in the Classroom Presented by Ms. Brooks October 8, 2014 Faculty Meeting Directions Within your group each of you have 3 different colors of play-doh. Your assignment is to design anything you want out of the play-doh. The only requirement is that you use all 3 colors. When you are finished choose one person to explain your design and why you chose that particular design. You have 5 minutes to design your masterpiece. You may begin!! Personal Narrative Personal Narrative - 2 Personal Narrative - 8 Expository Expository - 2 Expository - 7 Writing Expectations Students Writing EVERYDAY!!! Students have to write in order to get better at it. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Students should be Writing in all Core Subject Areas!! Math Social Studies Science Reading Teachers Conferencing with Students Weekly!! When you confer with a student, it isnt your job to fix or edit the students writing. Rather, its to teach the student one writing strategy or technique he can use in a current piece of writing and continue to use in future writing. As you confer, keep in mind Lucy Calkins wise advice: [We] are teaching the writer and not the writing. Our decisions must be guided by what might help this writer rather than what might help this writing (1994). Notice It, Name It, Claim It Notice ItName ItClaim It Find it in a familiar passage. Write the grammar rule. Come up with your own example. Notice It, Name It, Claim It instead of D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language) We want students to see the correct form more often than the incorrect form. Teachers should be conferencing with students about their writing weekly. Students should be working on skills using Notice It, Name It, Claim It instead of D.O.L.
