WRITING 421 MAGAZINE
WHAT YOU ARE READING
In early November, each of Mr. Coffin’s 421 Writing classes was given the task of creating a magazine as its first inquiry project of the year. Students were asked to list their interests and were then grouped according to their choices. The following pages offer you a glimpse of their first efforts as real-world writers.

HIPSTERS BY: ETHAN LAYBOLT
Many don’t know who or what a hipster is, but they are
starting to show up everywhere. A hipster is a person
who starts a trend or uses them
before they become “mainstream.”
Taking trends of fashion, music and
other things before other people pick
them up. This gives them a feeling of
being unique and “cool”. Most
hipsters also tend to be jerks with
their better than you attitude. So
when you see your twelve year old
soon wearing glasses with no lenses,
pink
skinny
jeans
with a
hand knitted hat going
to school; wake up call.
With hipsters
becoming more and
more popular, there’s a
certain kind of irony isn’t there. If they become
popular, will mainstream music and fashion become not
mainstream and start a cycle? With hipsters migrating
over to P.E.I, here are some tips to look out for them.
They prefer to migrate around coffee
shops and clothing stores that don’t sell
clothes that you’d let your daughter
wear to church.
They usually wear ironic eyewear like
glasses without lenses, oversized
glasses that nerds on the 70’s wouldn’t
wear and the colors could vary. Most
hipsters wear these with 20/20 vision
just because they can.
They usually wear ironic t-shirts like
cowboy shirts, plaid and anything
vintage. They also like to wear shirts
that have famous child shows on them
or even book covers.
They usually wear shoes they find in
ditches because it’s “old school”. So if
they smell like road kill, it’s a hipster.
Any rainbow or neon colored
headbands, bands, leggings, and don’t
forget weird piercings and plugs. Some
even put holes in their ears stretching
their ear lobes to extreme sizes. An
awkward thing to explain to your
grandson 30 years later.
They try to not match their clothes to
make it look like they don’t care.
Usually can’t tell if a boy or a girl, so if
you find them cute, maybe you should
give them a second glance just in case.
Typically listen to indie music which is a
genre of music that’s not very heard of.
Indie can sound however it likes but if
you never heard of it, it’s indie.
They talk in sarcasm and irony only.
Don’t talk for long or everything you
were talking about in the first place is
suddenly turned around.
Basically try to avoid anything with
glitter.
Since you know what they are you can avoid
them, protect your family from them and for
the better of everybody, stop the invasion of
hipsters.
The History of Progressive Rock
By: Ryan Snyder
Progressive Rock or Prog Rock originated in the United
Kingdom in the mid 60’s. It was further developed in
Germany, Italy and France. Prog Rock was a “British
attempt” to give greater artistic credibility to Rock
music. Prog Rock intended to “break” the boundaries
of traditional rock music by allowing bands to
experiment more with music. Prog Rock was very
popular in the mid 70’s with bands such as Pink Floyd,
Crimson King, Yes, Supertramp, Genesis and others.
Prog Rock has a few characteristics that make it, in my
opinion, much more enjoyable to listen to. Some of
these are: Form: Prog Rock Bands tried to avoid the
traditional verse-chorus form that defined so much of
the Rock bands of that time. They also had extended
instrumental sections that combined the more
traditional solo sections with the improvised solo’s of
Jazz. This is one thing that defined many Prog Rock
bands such as Rush, and Pink Floyd. Timbre: Early Prog
Rock bands expanded the timbre of traditional Rock
by adding instruments that were more characteristic
of Jazz or folk music such as: saxophones (Pink Floyd
was quite popular for this with songs like Money),
timpani, violin, flute. They also used electric
keyboards, synthesizers and other sound effects.
Melody and Harmony: Prog Rock bands, unlike classic
Rock, drew on inspiration from a wide range of genres
including classical, jazz, and later world music. Prog
Rock often replaced the electric guitar with more
complex instrumentation. It is also more likely to have
longer, developing passages instead of short, catchy
ones. Concept albums: Concept albums are albums
that are built around a story or a theme. Pink Floyd
made many concept albums that became quite
popular as well as Rush, with their latest album
Clockwork Angels. Lyrical Themes: Prog Rock tended
to avoid the traditional rock themes. Instead they
tended to write about more science fiction, social
commentary, literature Themes. For example Neil
Peart, in Rush’s’ early days, wrote about science
fiction and his own experiences and Roger Waters
wrote about social criticism.
The earliest Prog Rock bands were Pink Floyd,
Rush, Yes, Genesis, Caravan, King Crimson and many
others. Most of the first Prog rock bands were from
the U.K. but the genre was also becoming more
popular in other parts of Europe and also in parts of
North America. Progressive Rock’s popularity peaked
in the mid 70’s, when many Prog Rock artists regulary
topped reader polls and music charts. By this time
North America had several Prog Rock bands. Rush,
who formed in 1968, became a major band with many
if not all of their albums topping the charts. In 1974,
some of the most famous Prog Rock bands- Yes, King
Crimson, and Genesis- either stopped performing or
changed personnel. By the end of the 1970’s Prog
Rock declined in popularity. In the 80’s though,
Progressive Rock once again began to top the charts as
Rush came up with more and more albums that
became better and better over time.
Progessive Rock produced, and is still producing, some
of the biggest names in Rock history. They changed
Rock and Roll forever by introducing more influences.
Progressive Rock is probably the most famous Rock
genre.

NHL Statistics
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin were both drafted first overall in the NHL draft and both started there career in there 2005-2006 season. Crosby has 609 points in only 434 games. He has 223 goals, and 386 assists. Ovechkin has 679 points, but he played more games then Crosby. He played 553 games. Ovechkin has 339 goals and 340 assists. Crosby has 90 points in the playoffs, and Ovechkin only has 59. Crosby has a better shooting percentage in regular season with a 15.1%, and Ovechkin with only 12%. Crosby also has a better shooting percentage in playoffs with a 15.6% and Ovechkin has a 12.2%. Crosby is also beating Ovechkin in point per game, 1.39 to 1.29. From these statistics, Crosby is the better player. He gets more points per game, and has a better shooting percentage then Ovechkin.
Awards
Throughout both their NHL careers, they have both won five awards. Crosby has won the Art Ross, Lester B. Pearson, Hart, Mark Messier Leadership, and the Rocket Richard. Ovechkin has won the Art Ross, Calder, Hart, Ted Lindsey, and the Rock Richard. They also both have both won a gold and silver at the World Jr. Championships. Crosby has won the Olympic Gold, scoring the winning goal in overtime, and he has won a Stanley Cup, Ovechkin winning neither. If you compare the awards they have won, again it goes to Crosby. They are pretty close, but Crosby has won the Stanley Cup, every kid or NHL players dream. He has won an Olympic gold, something else very special because that means you were the best in the world and opportunities like that don’t happen too often.
Head to Head
In 21 games versus the Capitals, Crosby has 35 points. Ovechkin has played 25 games and has 33 points against the Penguins. Playing against each other, Crosby has 26 points and Ovechkin only has 18. Sidney Crosby also has a better head to head record, getting more points against Ovechkin and he has more points in fewer games vs. the Capitals.
Overall
The advantage goes to Crosby. He's the best player in the league right now. He is better statistically, has had more success in the playoffs and Olympics, and he's made players around him better. Crosby has better NHL statistics, more awards and a better head to head record. Sidney Crosby is the best player in the league right now and is getting better every year.

450R The new 2013 450R is a totally redesigned
bike. They have completely redone this bike
over for 2013. They started with the
chassis/frame of the bike. They had made
the frame much lighter. The all-new twin-
spar aluminum was designed specifically for
the new forks on the 450. They have also
made it for this generation. The scrub
generation. They made it easier to pull
scrubs and whips by making the bike lighter
and centering the bikes mass. The new forks
on this bike to go with the chassis are a
game changer. There is now the new air fork
suspension. It makes the bike lighter and lets
you have much more precise tuning and
helps the feel of it. The 450’s have also
brought back the good old twin exhaust
mufflers. These are way shorter and are
tucked in more to center of the bikes mass.
The twin exhaust also contributes to the
power of this bike. Also the new six-spring
clutch helps make smoother shifting. The
new 450 is ready to elevate the performance
in 2013 with the most improvements of all
the new Honda’s.
The new Honda bikes are poised to
blow away the competition in 2013. With
the new Dunlop tires, the new lighter frames
and the new easy to use Unicam cylinder
head. These bikes will be at the top of there
classes in 2013.
The new 2013 Honda race bikes
are the new and improved winners for
2013. The brand new 2013 450R, the
250R and the small starter 150R. These
new bikes are poised to blow away the
competition.
250R
The new 250 is going to be tough to top
from 2012. In 2012 the Honda 250’s
won both of the Supercross Lites
Championships. Like the 450 they have
also made a lighter aluminum frame.
The new twin-spar aluminum frame.
Also they have revised and recalibrated
the fuel injection settings to give it more
response off the throttle. By Honda
putting the new Dunlop Geomax MX51
tires will give it the edge with better
traction and feel. We will have to see if
the Honda 250’s can repeat this year in
the Supercross Lites.
150R
The great starter bike, the 150R is a
small bike with big trophies. It might be
Honda’s smallest racing machine but it
has everything to win. With the new
Unicam cylinder head makes shifting
smooth, easy and faster. This is the
perfect bike for starting out.

The two biggest names in skateboarding in history are Chris Cole and Jaime Thomas. They both started skateboarding at a very young age. Chris stared skating when he was eight and Jaime stared when he was eleven. Now they are successful and they are both sponsored. The skate team Zero, sponsors them both. The truck company Thunder also sponsors them both too. The first Jamie Thomas model trucks came out in 1992. They both have shoes and skateboard decks modeled by Zero.
Some of the big highlights of Chris Cole’s career are that he landed a 360 flip down Wallenberg and he also won the Maloof Money cup. He also has been the skateboard magazine thrasher. He has been in a lot of the same skate videos as Jaime Thomas. They are both in skate one two and three. Jaime Thomas has done his for share of stuff in has career. He has been in all the zero videos and he was featured in Transworld magazine. One of the biggest millstones of his career was when he directed two toy machine videos. Chris Cole has won more contest then Jamie Thomas throughout there career. He has won first place at Wonka Free Ride Street Seattle, Kansas, and Glendale. He has so many awards so I wouldn’t be able to fit them all.
Chris Cole is the better skateboarder I think. He has won more awards and people like him more, and he is better known. He has been in more magazines, and video games. He is more popular then Jamie Thomas because he lands better and more difficult trick. They are the two best skateboarders in the world, and those are some reasons why.

Gas vs. Diesel g
NOV. 7TH
, 2012
What are you looking for?
The question is what are you looking for? What type of hauling are you going to be doing? Those are all the questions you have to take into proportion when buying a truck. If you are a farmer hauling cattle then a diesel engine truck would be the best for you. The torque advantage of diesels is perfect for hauling heavy loads or going up steep inclines.
Because of the relatively high-compression ratio necessary to ignite the diesel fuel, a diesel makes all its torque and power low in the rev range.
Now if you are one of those people who use your truck around town and do not do much hauling a gas engine you be most ideal for you. Gas engine typically have more horsepower, while diesels have more torque. I am not saying that with a gas engine you can’t do any hauling. Just big loads will be very difficult for a gas. Fuel Economy
Diesel fuel has a higher density than gas fuel. Diesel engines are more efficient per gallon of fuel burned. Diesels also use about one third as much fuel at idle than gasoline units. Diesels usually get six to eight more MPG than smaller weight gas pickups. Over the life of a truck this advantage could be significant. Especially if driving a lot of miles. Because of the high-compression ratios and resulting high cylinder pressure in diesel engines, they must be built to withstand more punishment than gas engines. Beefed-up parts include a thicker block and cylinder heads and stronger connecting rods, pistons, crankshaft, and valves. These parts can be costly. As an example, if you want to upgrade a 2002 F-250 from the standard 5.4L V-8 to the 7.3L turbo diesel V-8, you're going to spend around $4800. However, to go from the 5.4L to the 6.8 L V-10 gasoline engines, the price is a more affordable at $600.
Different Models
Now I will talk about the different engine sizes, accessories, and what would be best for you. In Diesel engines they vary by the make of the truck. I will list off some of the ones for you. There are 6.0L, 6.6L, 6.3L, 6.7L, 7.0L and 7.3L. These are some of the more common engine sizes among diesel trucks. The higher size engine you go the more torque you will get. If you want to spend money on your diesel to make it look pretty, some accessories are chrome package, bull bar, roll bar, black out or some mud tires if you will be going through muddy or snowy terrain. The same goes for gas. You can get 4.6L, 4.8L, 5.0L, 5.4L, and 5.7L. These are also some popular engine sizes. You could get V6 or V8 also. If you are doing any bit of hauling a 5.0L and up truck will do the best. For example hauling a mid size camper with a 5.7L gas truck will be almost the same as a diesel.

Gas versus Electric
By: Ross MacDonald
Have you ever been driving down the road and
see a car plugged in? Well, this is becoming
more and more popular when buying a car.
Everyone wants a good alternative without
having to go to the pump everyday. People are
using electric cars more and more. Soon
everyone will have one.
Don’t get me wrong, gas is good to but let’s be
honest, I don’t want to pay the price at the
pump. With the new electric cars they have all
the features you’re used to in the gas cars but
there way more affordable over a long period of
time. The price for the 2013 Chevrolet Volt runs
about $41,000. They sell a car that has all the
same style but runs on gas for $17,130. With
the money you save on gas with the electric
car, it would basically pay for it self within
twelve years. Let’s say you spend three
hundred dollars a month on gas, multiply that
by a year. That’s $3600. Then multiply it by
twelve. That turns out to be $43,200. You try
and tell me you don’t want to save that much!
With most modern parking lots they have
charging stations. With the electric car you
would never have to pay to drive it.
Now let’s move onto the gas car. It has all the
same features of the electric car but it is way
cheaper in price. You might think you’re getting
a deal by paying so little but the gas money will
start to run out over a period of time. Even if
you happened to get the hybrid model, that still
doesn’t beat the electric car. Not even close.
Now with the electric car becoming a hot topic,
all the companies are trying to build the better
car. Which one is cheapest, reliable, and you
can’t forget safest. That’s all the factors that the
companies have to think about when making a
car. There is a big rivalry with Toyota and
Chevrolet. They both claim that the have the
best electric car.
The electric car Toyota sells is the Prius Hybrid.
It costs $35,700. It’s a little bit cheaper then the
Chevrolet. I did a comparison; they both have
five star safety rating. Both have the same
features as the gas models, and people seem
to like them more.
The winner of the electric battle is the Toyota. It
is cheaper and people seem to leave great
reviews about it. With all the facts I have given
about electric cars the gas models simply only
has one category they can compete in. Power!
The gas models of these cars have a
considerably larger amount of power.
When going to buy a car, buy the one that fits
your lifestyle the best. I’m sure you will be
pleased with the product you decide on.
November 2012 2 Strokes versus 4 Strokes
A lot of people may be
stuck with the question
what kind of bike do I get ?
What would be more
reliable? What's cheaper?
Well I'm here writing to
explain and help you make
the choice from a 2 stroke
or a 4 stoke. So what's
faster? This usually is a
big factor in buying bikes
when some people like the
thrill of the bike hitting the
power band and lifting the
front wheel pulling a
wheelie you would
What’s the Better Bike?
Prices…
The Two strokes are cheaper, but although they are cheaper they can also cost more money in the long run. What I mean is the two strokes can blow pistons as easy as anything and new parts. But as I say again They are cheaper in most things because if you blow the engine in your 4stroke you are into a lot of money to fix but say you blew a piston in a two stroke
probably want to invest in
a 2 stroke, If its more for a
family ride and on the trail
a 4 stroke two stroke
would be the better bike for
you. The two strokes are a
lot faster because they are
meant for a racing bike the
125cc 2 strokes are
actually not even a close
comparison to a 125cc 4
stroke in fact the two stoke
would be two to three
times more powerful.
you’d only be out two to four hundred dollars but a four stroke would be around 1000-1500 for
engine replacement. Then there is gas, of course as many people know 2 strokes take gas and oil mixed and that alone is really expensive but they run through a tank so easy because when you drive it hard hitting the power band it just drinks it. But the 4 strokes trail
bikes are very easy on gas they hardly burn anything and they hold a big tank, most four strokes you can drive three to four hours without running low on gas.
Common Questions? What’s faster?
What’s cheapest?
Most expensive?
What’s easiest to

How it all Started…
The Formula One series got its ideas from the European grand prix. The name Formula: set of rules
which all participants and cars must meet. Formula One
started after World War II in 1946, with the first non-championship races being held that year. A number of
Grand Prix racing organizations had laid out rules for a
World Championship before the war, but due to the suspension of racing during the conflict, the World
Drivers' Championship was not formalized until 1947.
The first world championship race was held at Silverstone, United Kingdom in 1950.

Show Me the Money
It was cheaper to build a NASCAR vehicle but everyone knows the Formula car will destroy any NASCAR vehicle. A NASCAR can cost about $125,000 and to build a Formula 1 racer will cost about $7,400,000 .
Formula 1 or NASCAR
It depends on who you ask which on is better.
One car is very interesting and has more
action and the other one just has “there
making left turn oh look there making
another left turn”. If it was up to me I will
chose Formula 1 every time.

Fishing Techniques
Trout fishing has been a
past time for people of
Northern America for
many years. The first
Trout Fishing reference
was in 1783 when
Alexander Mackenzie made
his epic first crossing over
the Northern America
continent. Rainbow Trout
are native to the drainages
of the pacific coast of
America. From Alaska to
Mexico and the waters of
the Pacific Ocean.
Bobber fishing is an old but still used trick for catching trout or any fish in
particular. The bobber can be used in the water on the line or just hung on the
line out of the water. The bobber moves which is how you know if you caught a
fish or not. The bobber will move with the fish if on the line in the water; if it’s on
the line out of water it will move up and down. This technique is most commonly
used to catch trout now a day’s.
Fly fishing is a different type of fishing
technique used to catch trout. To do Fly fishing
you have to constantly whip the line back and
for out of the water. You use a small little fly
for the bait. Most fish eat flies so they will be
attracted to the bait. Hopefully after you start
using this technique, you will catch a nice sized
trout for yourself.
In this picture, the man you see had just caught the trout he is holding in his hand. This man used a type of fishing called Fly Fishing.

Animals
Animal cruelty is becoming more common in Zoo’s every year. Most people think that animals are safer in captivity, but it the complete opposite. They also think that once they get so old that they are sent back into the wild. Zoos don’t give the animals the space they need to grow and live a normal healthy life. Polar bears are given a million times less the space they need if they are being held at a Zoo or park while lions and cheetahs get 18,000 times less space then they need. A few years ago, at
Woburn Safari Park, they would keep their lions in extremely small indoor rooms for up to eighteen hours a day. They didn’t have room to eat or sleep, and some had signs of physical abuse. The first Zoo in Canada charged with animal cruelty was in 2006. In Aldergroove, British Columbia at the Vancouver Zoo, the zoo was charged and had accreditation taken away for not having proper housing for a nineteen month old hippo. Even though they had said and made promises to build an outdoor area for the hippo, it spent the duration of its life inside a small concrete pen. Since they kept it in a small area with barely any where for the hippo to swim, it hasn’t devolved properly. Because of this
she can not swim and will stand away from water when outside. Eventually, the zoo had to build a new facility for the hippo. The decision to keep the baby hippo there was because of

the risk of moving her was too high. She could become more stressed and have even more serious problems. Since all this happened, the zoo has been trying to get another hippo.
This wasn’t the first time the Vancouver Zoo had been in trouble with Animal Right Organizations. There were two other reports, except this time the results were more major. Since 1983, four hippos have died. Two had died in their mid twenties, which isn’t even half of there life span in the wild. The other two died when the Zoo had built a frozen outdoor pond, which wasn’t up to standards and the ice had cracked.

ANIMALS
These bright marvelous colorful creatures are known throughout the world. Over thousands of species of these little critters roam our kingdom below. For some over four different colors appeal from, reds, yellows, purples, pinks, whites, greens, to even orange. They are so beautiful that no one can resist the sight.
The Body Structure of a Coral Fish
The typical body shape of a coral fish differs from most open water fish such as Marcel, cod, or halibut. Open water fish commonly have the body shape of a torpedo, which allows the fish to gain speed. With coral fish their body structures are built just like a flat pancake, on which you eat for breakfast. These so called fish are shaped so differently to allow them to make rapid turns and to stop quickly to avoid predators throughout their habitats.
The Habitat for a Coral Reef Fish
The coral reef is uniquely complex and colorful waving environments. These physical structures are ninety-nine percent different from the open water habitat. Reefs are like little villages while open water habitats put you in remind of a huge country such as Canada. With this being said it shouldn’t be surprising that many of these coral fish took on numerous adaptations to live throughout these habitats.

The most cool and bizarre adaptation of these fish are inhabiting the variety of the brilliant color patterns upon their skin. The reasoning behind the disoriented color patterns is that the patterns is that the patterns are intended to make predators confused and also used for species recognition, for mating season.
Coral Fish Feeding Types/Diets
When it comes to these little fellows diets, scientists categorize them into a few basic groups. These groups are based upon what the specie of fish likes to munch on. Feeding types between coral fish has been classified in many ways, but here are the most common four; Herbivores, planktivores, benthic carnivores and piscivores.

Puppy Mills and Animal Abuse What is a Puppy Mill? A Puppy Mill is a large breeding operation in which puppies are mass-produced for profit in substandard conditions. The goal of a Puppy Mill is to produce as many puppies as possible with little cost to, and a lot of financial gain for, the operator. A Puppy Mill cannot and will not meet the needs of a dog and is most definitely another form of animal cruelty. Puppy Mills are a multimillion dollar business in Canada. Surprisingly at least 90 percent of pet store puppies come from Puppy Mills. Pet stores are not the only place where Puppy Mill pups are sold. They are also sold through the internet, at flea markets, advertised in local newspapers and sometimes sold directly from the mil, although visitors are not usually allowed inside the Puppy Mills to see the conditions in which the dogs are kept. Puppy Mill pups are usually four to eight weeks of age when they are taken from their mothers and shipped a great distance (for as long as a week at the time) to pet stores throughout Canada and the US in overcrowded, dark and dirty trucks, crammed in crates with other puppies and without good food or water. The puppies are so young because they are so cute at this age and easier to sell, but they can also get diseases very easy because they have not received enough (if any) vaccinations. Animals from Puppy Mills are often infested with internal parasites and contagious diseases because of the poor hygiene conditions and lack of medical attention. The breeding dogs are often kept in cages with wired bottoms which can cause permanent damage to their feet. The dogs are
almost always kept in small cramped cages where they may not even be able to turn around or stand fully. Some dogs have even been found in dark closets or crates which have been permanently nailed shut. Cages are often stacked on top of each other allowing excrement and urine to flow down on top of the dogs and puppies below and there is little or no cleanup. All the characteristics are Puppy Mills are:
Insufficient Housing;
Overcrowding;
Lack of Sanitation;
Underfeeding;
Lack of Veterinary Care;
Cruelty;
Shady Breeding Practices;

What can you do? Some things you can do to stop Puppy Mills are to tell people what you know about Puppy Mills. Then tell them not to buy a dog in a pet store. Protest a store. There are groups all over the word that protest pet stores. You can start your own protest group and protest in your area. Put an ad in the newspapers in your area to educate people where you live. Print flyers and hand them out everywhere – businesses, post offices, libraries, grocery stores, colleges, and schools – everywhere where there is a public bulletin board. A good idea is to also take the flyers and put them on car windows at malls where there are pet stores selling puppies. Make sure you look around to see if there are any signs that say “no soliciting”. If there are then you should not go put your flyers on the cars but if there are no signs you can. It only takes a few minutes to put a flyer on a hundred cars and you can make a big difference. Put up a billboard in your area. Billboards can cost a lot but they are a great way to reach thousands of people. You can set up presentations at your school or community centers. Send out letters to all the puppy stores in your area that sell puppies and tell them that you will not be buying anything from them until they stop selling puppies. Also go to pet stores in your area, look at the puppies, note the conditions, ask to see the registration papers for the puppies and write down the name and address of the breeder and the broker.

. The Rush
One of the most common reasons for dangerous activities is the adrenaline rush. It is basic human nature to want to feel safe, but it is also normal for people to crave danger. Without taking risks, like dangerous sports, people understand that life would be boring. Most of the
time, the rush of adrenaline would be enough to get a person through a slow day at work or school. There was also scientific research suggesting that some people have a gene that is more sensitive and that is what draws them to high risk activities and sports. The term adrenaline junkie comes from somebody who does high risk activities or sports all
the time, just to get a rush.
Lifestyle
In some cases, people get into sports because of their environment. Hunter MacCallum, 17, of Texas got into bull riding because that’s what his father had done. If you grow up exposed to something like that, chances are you will get into some form of it. Also, if you grow up in a community that promotes certain activities, such as hockey or soccer, than you’ll probably get into those specific sports. The world is getting more intense, so people turn
to dangerous sports as an outlet. When doing that dangerous activity, you have to concentrate so it brings you away from stressful things. If you live a stressful life, you’re more likely to be attracted to a dangerous sport.
For the Love Of It
More often than not, people do high risk sports because they have found a love for it. Whether it’s the health benefits, or working in a team, if people enjoy an activity they will continue to do it no matter the risk.
There are many reasons why people throw themselves into danger in the form of sports but everybody has there own. Lifestyle, the rush and the love are just a few of the main reasons.

The Reasons
There are warning labels on everything, including the sports we play and enjoy. So, what exactly posses us to get on the back of a bull or get launched out of a plane 2 miles
up in the atmosphere? Well, everybody has there own reasons but some of the main reasons are the adrenaline rush, lifestyle choices and the love for certain aspects of the sport.

Eberle and Hall By: Ben Doucette
Junior Careers
Both Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall had successful junior careers. Jordan Eberle played in
the WHL, while Taylor Hall played in the OHL.
Taylor Hall was named OHL and CHL rookie of the year in his first year of junior in
2007/2008. He played with the Windsor Spitfires. Scoring 45 goals and 39 assists which
gave him 84 points. Hall led the Windsor Spitfires to two consecutive Memorial Cup
Championships. He was named MVP in both tournaments. He was chosen first round, first
overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2010.
Jordan Eberle played with the Regina Pats in the WHL. He won CHL player of the year in
2010. He also won the Doc Seaman Trophy as the scholastic player of the year in 2008. He
was drafted in the first round 22nd overall to the Edmonton Oilers.
Both Eberle and Hall played for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships winning
silver and gold. Both players were very successful in the tournament. This is how people
recognized them and this is one of the main reasons why they were drafted so low.
Injuries
In Taylor Hall’s rookie season with the
Oilers he was one fight away from
getting a Gordie Howe hat trick when
he dropped the gloves. He dropped
awkwardly during the fight and
suffered a high ankle sprain that ended
his rookie season. He also took a
tumble during one of the warm-ups
and got a skate to the face which led to
30 stitches.
Jordan Eberle had more luck with the
injuries compared to Taylor Hall. He did
suffer a high ankle sprain similar to
Hall’s though. This only put him out for
13 games.
NHL Careers
Both boys have played very well so far in the NHL. They will grow up to be Hall of Famers. Both boys are playing in the AHL due to the lockout this year.
