Wrentham Summer Institute 2018 Wrentham Summer Institute: The Summer Institute is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., (except the week of July 4th). At the end of each day, the instructor will accompany your child outside the school and wait with them until a parent or guardian arrives for a prompt pick up. Session Dates: Session I: June 25-29 Session II: July 2, 3-5,6 Session III: July 9-13 Session IV: July 16-20 Session Fee:

Grade Level: For grade level, please indicate the grade your child will be entering in September, 2018. What to Bring: Children will need a drink, snack and comfortable play clothes. Check the course description for any special equipment or supplies needed for individual courses. Location: The Summer Institute will be held at the Roderick and Vogel School. During inclement weather, the outdoor classes will be assigned an indoor location. Please look for our banners and friendly staff members to guide you on your first day of class
Registration: Complete a separate registration form and medical form for each child. Please indicate a second choice for each session.
You do not have to be a Wrentham resident to register. If you are not a Wrentham resident, please send the two registration forms, PLUS a copy of your child’s physical form including immunizations.

Week 1- June 25th-29th
Animal Antics
Grade level: K-6th
Come visit, and play with animals while we learn about them! We will have real animal
visitors like dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, and birds. The animals may change. Each day
we will have live animals as our models and friends while we learn interesting facts about the
animal, do crafts, and play games outside based on the animal of the day. We may do some
food crafts too, if the animals don’t get too hungry!

Art Club
Grade level: 1st-4th
Sign up for Art Club to play with your favorite art materials! Each day we will learn a fun new
art technique: printmaking with watercolor and shaving cream; make-your-own scratch art with
oil pastels and paint; weaving with Popsicle sticks and yarn; art-making with things found in
nature! On our last day together, we will have Open Studio time – you can decide how to spend
your art time! We will listen to music, and enjoy making art together!

Card Collecting
Grade level: 2nd-5th
Do you love sports and collecting cards? Join fellow collectors in organizing, watching greatest
sports moments and playing wiffle ball, flag football and soccer! Let’s organize our baseball,
football, hockey, soccer or Pokemon collections. We will look at the greatest sports moments in
Boston history and in the world. Making sure we have time to make some great sports moments
for ourselves with a wiffle ball games, flag football games and soccer games.

Future Stars of Broadway
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Welcome all future stars of Broadway! Do you love to be on stage? Do you dream of acting or
dancing on Broadway one day? For anyone who loves to act, perform, or be creative, this is the
perfect place for you!
This week, you will work together to create and perform your very own play. You will have the
opportunity to be creative, work as a team, and perform your play at the end of the week. You
will also get the chance to create and practice choreography as a group. At the end of the week,
we will take pride in our work by performing our creations for family and friends. Get ready for
a fun-filled week of acting, dancing, and team work!

Insane Science
Grade level: 3rd- 6th
Just as Einstein said “Play is the highest form of research”, so In this class we will be doing fun
and crazy science experiments and having fun at the same time! We will be learning about
chemistry by creating Lava Lamps, and rock crystals. We will explore life science by making
our own fossils. We will even learn about biology by extracting DNA from peas! On the last
day we will do a fascinating experiment that will blow your mind!! So grab a friend and join
this class for some INSANE SCIENCE!

Introduction to American Sign Language
Grade level: K-6th
Have you ever wanted to learn how to speak with your hands? Well, we have the class for you!
In our class, we will show you how to talk to other people who use American Sign Language.
Each class will be personalized and adjusted to the learning style of each child. Our goal is to
make learning a new language fun and exciting! During the week, you will learn the basics of
Sign Language, play fingerspelling games and even have time at the end of class to go over
anything you would like to learn about Sign Langauge. By the end of the week, you should be
able to have basic conversations using American Sign Language, and there may be a special
surprise! Get those fingers warmed up to have some fun!

Introduction to the Martial Arts and Self Defense
Grade level: K-6th
This course is designed for beginner students interested in learning the early basics of Martial
Arts training. We will be highlighting and discussing the 3 core principals in the Martial Arts;
Self Control, Self-Discipline and Respect.
We will be teaching the importance of focus, control and strength as well as learning basic
techniques designed to build confidence both mentally and physically.
There will be emphasis on the importance of health and fitness with daily drills/games designed
to be challenging and of course lots of fun!!!

Letterboxing and Water Fun Play
Grade level: 2nd-5th
What could be more fun than finding a hidden treasure? Finding a hidden treasure and then
running through a sprinkler, that’s what!! Have fun, stay cool! Letterboxing is an intriguing mix
of hiking, puzzle solving, treasure hunting and rubber stamping. Throughout the week we will
spend time indoors and out. Each child will choose a code name, decorate a letterboxing bag and
create a few unique rubber stamps. All supplies can be taken home at the end of the week! We
will hike the school grounds and Sweatt Hill areas in search of hidden treasures and end each day
by cooling off with lots of water play!! So bring a towel, sunscreen, bug spray, a water bottle and
a snack and get ready for lots of fun!!

On Holiday
Grade level: K-4th
Do you love to celebrate the holidays? If you do, then come join the fun! Each day a different
holiday will be celebrated. Will you be my Valentine on Monday? How about catching a
Leprechaun on Tuesday. Let’s have a cook-out for the Fourth of July. Trick or treat and wear
a costume for Halloween. End the week with the most wonderful time of year, Christmas. We
will be busy decorating for each holiday, creating fun crafts, making and eating yummy snacks,
and playing holiday themed games. This week will be packed with fun filled holiday activities.

Scratch
Grade level: 4th-6th
In this program, the student spends the week learning how to create animations and games with
the Scratch software. In addition to class instruction and free time to explore Scratch, the
students will participate in breaks from the computer screen and learn about various computer
science topics. The students will create either a game or animation that they may present on
Friday.

Stem Design Challenges
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Do you love to design? Build? Create? Come join us for a week of design challenges. Each day
we will have a new design challenge. Each challenge will ask you to create something to fix a
problem. You might need to create a table or get a marble from one floor to another. The catch?
The materials that you receive to build with. They will be limited and might not be what you
expect. You will be able to work independently, with partners or with teams to solve each design
problem. Let’s get building!

Summer Reading Jump Start
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Do you LOVE to read? If so, this class is perfect for you!
With the library at your fingertips, begin your summer with a great book. Sign up for summer
reading at the Fiske Library and begin the journey to reach summer reading goals. Join with
friends and spend your mornings reading short stories, poems, plays or chapter books. We will
spend time in the shade outside and in the Roderick Library- sharing great stories and reading
together. At the end of the week, we will submit our minutes to the Fiske Library and receive
credit for our reading minutes.

Super STEM Stations
Grade level: 1st-3rd
Calling all future engineers! Do you love to build and create? During Super STEM (Science
Technology Engineering Math) Stations we’ll be using all types of materials like legos, popsicle
sticks, cups and playdough to build different structures. Each day we’ll have different challenges
- like building a boat that can float or creating an awesome water slide design. Throughout the
week we’ll create straw rockets and see who can make a paper airplane that will fly the
farthest. You will work with partners to come up with great designs and then think about how
you can make them even better.

TEAM SPORTS
Grade level: K-3rd
Have some fun and learn a variety of TEAM SPORTS. Throughout the week, we will play
many sports including soccer, speedball, basketball, Frisbee and many more. We will be inside
the gym and outside on the play area. Come and join the fun and wear your sneakers and bring a
snack and a water bottle.

Tie Dye
Grade level: K-6
Welcome back to the very popular tie dying bonanza with Miss Brackett! If you love the look of
bright colored tie dye shirts, headbands, sweatshirts or even bandanas than this class is the class
for you! Enjoy the sunny summer days while creating your own masterpieces of tie-dye clothing
and accessories. You can even bring in your own things from home to tie-dye! Do not miss out
on this once a year celebration!
*Please wear clothes you do not mind getting tie-dye on

Act it Out
Grade level: 2nd-6th
Do you like to perform? Do you enjoy being a part of a play? This is the program for you!
Throughout the week we will work together to create a play! Everyone will have a part in the
play. We will rehearse lines and work on stage performance. On Friday we will perform the
play on stage!

From Junk to Jewelry
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Have you ever wanted to turn a broken or unusable item into something else? Do you like
working with tools and creating really cool art? Well, this is the course for you! There will be a
variety of items for you to repurpose into wearable art. Let your imagination soar!

Minute it To Win it!
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Do you love fast-paced games? How about competing against friends or yourself to beat a
personal best? In Minute to Win It Challenge, we will use common household and school
supplies to create exciting challenges and games. Impress your friends with the tricks you master
like knocking down a single pencil with a marble, volleying paper balls with clipboards, and
stacking and balancing dice on a popsicle stick in your mouth! On our last day, we hold our final
Minute to Win It competition and the winning team will be crowned the Minute to Win It
Champions!

Pottermania
Grade level: 3rd-6th
Harry Potter fans, enter the world of Hogwarts and Harry Potter! Immerse yourself in the
adventures of Harry Potter and his friends. Join us as we read “The Cursed Child,” have Harry
Pottery experiences, such as getting sorted into Hogwarts houses, learn spells and learn to play
Quidditch. We will finish up with a trip to “Hogsmead” and some Butter Beer.

Calling all children entering kindergarten! Come and meet some of your future classmates!
Learn your way around the classroom and school. Parents, your child will have exposure to the
kindergarten word wall words and experience some new math activities. These lessons will be
aligned with the state common core standards. Give your child a JUMP START and help them
KICK OFF a fabulous year in kindergarten. From morning meeting to calendar, we will follow a
typical kindergarten schedule and routine. This class will take place in a Kindergarten classroom.
Children will have an opportunity to tour the school and finally, we will introduce your child to
the awesome Delaney Playground! We cannot wait to meet our future kindergarten students,
please consider joining us!

Scratch ll
Grade level: 4th-6th

Tennis and Pickleball
Grade level: 2nd -6th
Are your rackets ready? We hope so, because this summer we are offering a combined class of
tennis and pickleball! During tennis class we will be teaching all the basics such as forehand,
backhand, volleys and serves. The students will even participate in tournament play.
Pickleball class will be structured similarly, however the court size, racket size, and rules will
change a bit!

American Girl Club
Grade level: 2nd – 4th
Do you love American Girl Dolls? If so, then this class is for you! Come bring your American
Girl doll for a week packed with fun. We will make crafts for you and your doll and end the
week with an American Girl ice cream party! So, grab your doll and come join the American
Girl Cub!

Beach Creations
Grade level: 1st & 2nd
Do you love the summer and going to the beach? Then this is the camp for you! Come decorate
a canvas beach bag, T-shirt and hat! On the last day we will have a beach party!

Bugs, Butterflies & Books
Grade level K-1st
Are you ready for a week of creepy-crawly fun? This week we’ll be learning all about six-
legged creatures and go searching for bugs with jars and nets in hand.
We’ll read bug books, make butterfly & ladybug crafts, create bug fossils and do lots of other
indoor and outdoor activities ~all involving bugs! Our week will conclude with a BUG-abration,
complete with bug juice and edible insects!

Cooking Creations
Grade level: K-6th
Do you like to cook? Do you like sweets? We will be making cupcakes, candy, donuts, bread,
quesadillas, and other yummy treats each day for you to bring home! We even make some non-

play time. Come and be creative with food!

Duct Tape Creations
Grade level: 2nd-6th
Duct tape isn’t just for fixing things anymore. In this class, we’ll use the sticky, colorful tape to
create masks, picture frames, pencil cases and even bags - all from duct tape. These are just a
few of the fun crafts we will make from duct tape. Come ready to have fun and be creative.

I Believe in Fairies
Grade level: K-3rd
Do you believe in fairies? We do! In this class we will explore the world of fairies (and maybe
a gnome or two.) We will read fairy stories and create little fairy dolls. When weather
cooperates, we will spend time outdoors to practice fairy dancing and build natural homes for
our fairies with some teeny tiny materials. Create another fairy house to bring home. Sprinkle
on some pixie dust and join us for a fairy filled week of fun!

Set the perfect amount of time aside to prepare for 7th grade. Spread out the beach towel, get the
snacks ready, partner up with some friends and read a great book. We will work on the required
Active Reading Log and math assignments throughout the week in order set a good pace for
completion. By developing a plan, and working with friends you will be on your way to a
successful start to 7th Grade

Summer Safari
Grade level: K-2nd
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! If you love the animals of the jungle than this is the class for
you. Join us in creating jungle themed crafts as well as participate in fun activities that keep you

Summer Science
Grade level: 2nd-5th
Get ready for totally hand-on, amazing science experiments. We will be exploding volcanoes,
making marshmallow towers, writing in invisible ink, creating homemade bouncy balls and
much more! We will discover what happens when you combine Diet Coke and Mentos, all while
learning what causes these reactions. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Web Design
Grade level: 4th-6th
Do you ever wonder how your favorite website is made? In this class, students will discover how
to create and design basic webpages. The students will participate in breaks from the computer
screen to learn about various computer science topics. By the end of the week, students will have
their own website design.

Week 4- July 16th-20th
Beachy Keen Fun
Grade level: K-2
Is summer one of your favorite seasons? Do you love the beach? Come have fun learning all
about the beach! We’ll play water games, like Drip, Drip, Drop and Fill My Bucket. Our
projects will include shell paintings, collages, t shirt decorating and photo frames. We’ll read
summer stories and culminate our week with a make your own sundae party! Can you say I
LOVE SUMMER? Please pack a snack, drink and towel daily. Feel free to wear a bathing suit
under your clothes.

Creativity Unlimited!

Have you heard about Wrentham's Destination Imagination program? Have you wondered,
what's it all about? During this week long program students will engage in similar activities to
those found in the DI program. Each day will start off with fun team building exercises, then
move on to hands-on Instant Challenge activities, like building a bridge with toothpicks and
mini-marshmallows, or building a tower with spaghetti. Students will be grouped together by
grade and will experience the challenge of researching a given topic in history and then rewriting
that historical event in a new and creative way. Two sessions to choose from; July 10 - 14 or July
17 - 21.

PROGRAMMIN' PROS
Grade level: 4th-6th In this introductory class, students will learn basic syntax for the programming language Python.
In addition to creating their own first programs, they will learn how languages like this one are
utilized to build apps and games. After class instruction free time on the computer will allow the
new programmers to discover Python for themselves. The students will participate in periodic
breaks from the computer screen to learn about various computer science topics, participate in
logic games, work with algorithms, and learn about well-known individuals and their

Seussical Summer
Grade level: K-2nd
It’s only just begun, Come on in and join the fun. We’ll learn about Horton that is for certain.
Sit back and relax, as we read the Lorax. How about some Oobleck? You’ll think it’s so
coolbleck. You’ll surely be beggin’, to taste those green eggins. We’ll make one fish, two fish
swimming in the sea, And after that, we’ll plant a tree! Yes! Dr. Seuss, he is the one, you don’t
want to miss the fun!

Up, Up and Away!
Grade level: K-2
Do you love all things aviation? Join us as we explore planes, helicopters and more through
crafts, books and creative foods.

Wilderness Survival
Grade level: K-3rd
Calling all junior explorers! Join us as we dig into a week of wilderness skills and fun. We will
make mini survival kits to take home, build outdoor shelters, create bark boats, learn to whistle
with acorns, and hike around Sweatt Hill among other activities. Throughout the week we will
learn to pack a daypack, practice safe hiking, and use a compass. If you like the outdoors, you
will love Wilderness Survival!
