Go Down With Someone You Trust!
SRI LANKAWrecks, Reefs & Whales
21st March ~ 28th March, 2015
Sri Lanka - Colombo - Galle
Sri Lanka is an amazing island blessed with cool hill stations, sultry jungles, golden beaches and vibrant coral reefs. Compliment this with a traditional culture and a history that is as rich and colourful as it is ancient and you have a destination that is sure to delight all.
Colombo, the bustling and vibrant commercial capital city of Sri Lanka, offers not only historical monuments, colonial architecture, festivals and events, beaches, fine dining and great shopping but also offers world class wreck diving in close proximity to the city.
This is an amazing opportunity to explore the immense cargo holds of intact freighters such as the Pecheur Breton (Cargo Wreck) and the Medhufaru and rediscover history on WWI wrecks such as the SS Perseus. The wrecks are teeming with marine life, from large schools of snappers and fusiliers to visiting pelagics such as dogtooth tuna, wahoo and eagle rays. Most wrecks are in the 20-30m depth range and easy to access being less than 30 minutes boat ride from the dive centre.
Colombo diving is not only limited to wrecks. Wide angle enthusiasts can explore current swept outer reefs with soft coral and massive gorgonian sea fans while macro photographers can search for nudi branchs, crabs, shrimps, electric rays, pipefish, sea moths and other critters on the rocky reefs.
For novice divers, Colombo offers a challenging but rewarding environment to advance your training by taking
Advancedor Specialty courses in Enriched Air Nitrox or Deep Diver with training dives allow in gaccess to world-class wreck sites.
Galle, situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka, is one of the best places in the world to go whale and dolphin watching where you can witness a variety of marine species including blue whales, sperm whales and spinner dolphins. With an average sighting of 4.5 per a day, the now endangered Blue Whale is the most amazing sea creature found in Sri Lankan waters and, equivalent to the weight of 50 elephants, are the largest known marine mammal to have ever existed.
Spinner Dolphins are another common species found in Sri Lankan waters and undoubtedly the most striking ones. Unexpectedly they will leap out of water, spin and twist in the air and dive back in giving you an unforgettable experience.
A visit to Galle is not complete without a visit to the 300-year-old Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Portuguese invaders were followed by the Dutch and British and the streets within the fort are crammed with colonial remnants such as the Dutch Clock Tower, Reform Church and Commander's house to the British coat of arms on the outer walls. You can wander the atmospheric streets, explore the ramparts, visit the lighthouse and check out the bhodi tree and reclining Buddha in the temple. Many of the buildings have been converted to boutique hotels or stylish stores, perfect for a little shopping and afternoon high tea.
