    Choosing a Business Name

If you are going to go inbusiness, the first thing you willneed is a business name. Youllneed it for advertising, to put onbusiness cards and marketingmaterials, and for credibilitywithin the community.

Organizations like to do businesswith established business. A business name at least providesthe perception that you are serious about what you do.

When considering a business name, make sure it is distinctive, memorable, an easily spelled. Following, are a few othersuggestions:

    1. Make it relevant to your service. This is important. If youname it an attractive, but non-descriptive name, potential

customers wont connect your company with yourproduct. For example, Donnas Delights, could refer to abakery, a sushi store, or even a gourmet dog treatsupplier but not necessarily a candy wrapper business.

Likewise, give yourself room to grow. If you name yourbusiness, Wrapped Candy Paradise, you will have troublegetting the word out should you decide to sell wrappersonly, wrapped wine bottles, or customized CD covers. One other point: Dont name your company after aspecific location. What if you end up moving?

    2. Make it easy to pronounce. You dont want a name thatcant be easily said. On the contrary, you want yourcompany name repeated as much as possible becauseword of mouth is one of the most effective forms of

    5

advertising in this business. So, if you had planned onusing your own name for your company name, and yourname is Rosilia Kozlinkzobalia, rethink your decision. Ofcourse, you could shorten it by calling it Kozs CandyWrapping which is actually fun to say. But also make itunique. Sams Candy Wrapper Companyis not uniqueenough to stick in someones mind and might easily beconfused with Sandys Candy Wrapper Company.

    3. Protect your interests. A little research could save you abig headache later. So check trademarks to ensure thatothers in the candy wrapper business arent already usingthe name you picked out. That may seem unnecessary tosomeyou might even be tempted to say, Hey, Im just

working from home to make a couple extra bucks. Butwhat about your web site? You want to make sure youarent one of many -- that you stand out, or you mightput that couple of extra bucks at risk.

In keeping with this thought, make sure you check theavailability of domain names and for local assumednames (Also known As & Doing Business As) used bySole Proprietors in your area. And if you're planning toincorporate someday, check with the Secretary of State(in your state) to make sure that someone hasnt alreadyregistered the name youve chosen. At bare minimum,be aware of the names already in use and pick somethingelse.

Naming your business might be a challenge, but its a goodidea. If you grow your business, your business name willbecome an asset only if it was carefully chosen. If you end uponly working part-time on a small scale, an appropriatebusiness name will ensure that friends and family take your

endeavor seriously which is crucial in word of mouthadvertising.

As you create designs, you will want to include your businesscontact information on the wrapper. As for where to place it onthe wrapper, you might want to consider placing it on the onthe inside of the wrapper. When you place it on the inside asopposed to the outside, you reduce customer objections toincluding it because you maintain the integrity of thecustomers design. You might also try inserting it at thebottom of the wrapper using a very small, light font. You canmake a final decision on this as you determine your marketingplans.

Getting StartedTo do a professional job and remaincompetitive, you should have theability to work with graphicssoftware. However, if you arentparticularly skilled at these difficultand often frustrating programs, werecommend that your purchase oursoftware at wrapcandy.com -- youll

get great results since the software isdesigned specifically for the purposeof making creative and profitablewrappers.

You may also have skills in a particular form of art that will lenditself to this profession. Watercolors, sewing, photography, beading, calligraphy, and even poetry writing all create theirown unique packaging opportunities.

In addition to our software, you will need a computer, digitalcamera, and a flat bed scanner. It will be easier for you if yourclient supplies the item to be wrapped. If he doesnt, you canup-charge the product by as much as 50%. Be sure topurchase items at wholesale prices for the best possible profitmargin.

All together, not including advertising expenses, you should beable to start a candy wrapper business for $2000 -- a price thatincludes the computer. However, if you already own a computerand some of the other needed items, your startup costs couldbe as low as $200. From there, you can add to your equipmentand on hand supplies as you start to make a profit. And itwont take long at all to start making money.

When you start making money, you may want to upgrade to abetter computer. I personally like Dell Computers. They areeasy to upgrade, affordable and very reliable.

    Items you will need

9 PaperYoull need different types of tissue and decorative paper. You can use regular copy paper when making yourwrappers or you can use glossy. I have had good successwith paper all the way up to the 74-pound card stock.Different papers and weights of paper for good fordifferent items. For example, smaller candies might lookbest wrapped in lower weight paper, while matchbooksand mintbooks (creations that look like a matchbook on

the outside but have a mint treat inside.) should be madewith card stock for durability.

Its good to have variety of types of paper on hand:

Cellophane Foils Glossy brochure paper for

    wrappers

Gift wrap Card stock for mint books

32# or 36# Bright White paper 24# paper Glossy photo paper Semi Gloss Photo Paper

IMPORTANT NOTE: No matter which paper you decide touse, be sure to price your wrappers accordingly.

9 ScissorsOnce you feel that the investment will be worth it, you

can upgrade from scissors to a paper cutter. A papercutter costs from $30 - $60, and can be purchased atyour local office supply store. A paper cutter makes iteasier to cut your wrappers in bulk, but until you canafford one, scissors work just as well.

As you make a list of your desired equipment andsupplies, be sure to include edger scissors with a varietyof decorative edges. They provide dozens of creativepossibilities. While you are add it, check out your localcraft stores for decorative hole punches these come inevery imaginable shape and are great for adding detail toyour wrappers as you get more sophisticated in yourdesigns.

9 AdhesiveI use Avery permanent glue sticks as my adhesive. These can be found in the school supplies section of anydepartment store and are acid free and photo safe. Theybind very well and no problems with the drips and suchthat are obtained from using liquid glues. Other adhesives

include, string, ribbon, and self-adhesive labels (Note onLabels, Candy Companies like HERSHEYS do NOT allowyou to cover their products with permanent labels.)

If you are only going to sell wrappers only, it might be agood idea to invest in some double-sided tape. While it

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    9/45

    9

can be expensive, you can pass the price of the tape ontoyour customer by calculating it into the purchase price. You can then place a single strip of the tape on one endof each wrapper you sell, so that all the customer has todo is to wrap the label around the candy, peel the strip, and then stick the label to itself.

9 CandyYou can take any kind ofcandy and create customizedwrappers for them. Thecandies that are used in mysamples and templates are

regular sized Hersheys CandyBars or Crunch Bars, and alsoHersheys Miniatures. Othersuggestions include:

For weddings and showers - Large BonBons, Junior Mints

For senior Citizen events Cookies, sugar-free candies

For Childrens parties - boxed candy,Nerds, and Milk Duds

Use your imagination! If you are marketing your wrappersor wrapped candy to a particular group or event, have candysuggestions and samples ready to show potential customers.

9 Other itemsWhile candy is the obvious thing you think of when you

think of wrappers, think beyond the norm and youllincrease your business. What else can be wrapped? Forstarters, how about these items:

    Wine

9 Color PrinterYou can either use a laser printer or an inkjet Printer. Acommon misconception about inkjet printers is that theyare of lower quality. This is not true. Newer ink jetprinters can produce the same quality output as a laserprinter.

There are some advantages to laserprinters, however. Laser printers ink(toner) costs less per sheet thanstandard inkjet printers. Also, laserprinters offer a minimized chance ofyour work being smudged as it isinstantly fused to the paper insteadof "dried" to the paper.

If you are going to buy a laser

printer, be sure to spend some time shopping around anddefinitely check out the toner (ink) replacement costs.Sometimes the toner can cost as much as the printer.

    Setting up a Work Area

To begin, you will need to select a work area. This doesnt haveto be anything elaborate. Your office area (with the computer,

scanner, etc) can be separate from your physical work area. So, if you only produce wrappers, a corner of your home withthe appropriate equipment may be all you need. When startingout, it is not necessary to get a separate phone number, faxline, etc. -- this can come later.

If you will actually be wrapping candy, you will need thefollowing:

9 A cool, dry place to store the candy. A garage will work ifit is well-kept, clean, temperature controlled, and bug-

free. The basement is better, and a closet in the house isbest.

9 A work table with an outlet nearby if you need to plug insewing machine, glue gun, or even CD player so you canrelax while you work.

9 Organized bins nearby can hold supplies and craftmaterials. Paper that will not go through the printer canalso be stored here. Paper that will be used with the

computer generated templates should be stored near theprinter for easy access.

    9 Good lighting9 A trash can9 A comfortable chair.

    Creating Your Wrappers

First you will want to decide what type of wrapper you will wantto create and then choose the clip art that you want to use. Ihave included several tutorials on the CD that walks youthrough these steps to help you learn easier and faster thanyou could with traditional desk top publishing software.

The possibilities are endless in regards to the types and stylesof different wrappers that you can create. Using the samebasic technique each time, you can create wrappers and labelsfor all types of products. Dont be afraid to experiment a littleand see what new ideas you can come up with. Andremember, you dont have to limit yourself to candies -- if its aproduct with a label on it, you can customize itthis way.

A note about wrapping suckers: When you makewrappers for the suckers, you will create twoseparate pieces that you glue together. You trimthe plastic wrap around the suckers to make itsmaller, so that you can create a small envelope

to insert the suckers in by gluing the sides of thewrappers together.

Each candy company has their own policies andstandards regarding candy wrapping. On the next page, I haveprovided the policies for Hershey Foods Corporation and Nestl. These come directly from the companies themselves. If youare interested in wrapping candy manufactures or marketed byany other company, youll want to contact them for guidelines.

    Hershey Foods Corporation

    Policy Regarding Candy Wrapper Announcements

Hershey Chocolate & Confectionary Corporation, the trademark management subsidiary of Hershey Foods Corporation, and Hershey Foods Corporation (collectively, Hershey), requires that candy wrapper announcements satisfy the

following requirements: The candy wrapper announcement must not contain any trademark owned or licensed by

    Hershey or in which it has proprietary rights including, but not limited to the following: HERSHEYS; HERESHEIS;

HEREHEIS; HERETHEYARE; HE&SHES; MR. GOODBAR; MR. GOODBOY; MR. GOODGUY; MS.GOODGIRL; PAYDAY; ANNOUNCING ITS A and Design; ITS A HERSHEYS; the famous

HERSHEYS trade dress, that is the color and design of the wrapper for HERSHEYS milk chocolate bars.

The candy wrapper announcement must not contain any trademark that is similar in appearance, pronunciation or

commercial impression to any trademark owned or licensed by Hershey or in which it has proprietary rights. For

example, and not by way of limitation, we consider infringing wrappers that are confusingly similar to ourANNOUNCING ITS A and Design mark (Registration No. 1,396,706) for wrappers with a cutout which exposes

either the letters SHE or HE from the underlying HERSHEYS chocolate bar wrapper. We also consider infringing

any wrapper bearing a mark or design similar to our ITS A HERSHEYS mark (Registration No. 2,045,646) for

wrappers on which the letters SHE or HE in the trademark HERSHEYS are printed in pink or blue, respectively. As additional examples only (and this is not an exclusive list of the uses we would find infringing), we would consider

the following damaging to our trademark rights: GOOD & PRECIOUS used in conjunction with the trade dressassociated with our GOOD & Plenty products; OUR NEW JOY in association with the trade dress associated with our

ALMOND JOY product; MR. GOODBABY whether or not used in association with the trade dress associated with our

MR. GOODBAR candy product; and any modification to the plume extending from our KISSES candy product.

The original wrapper for the HERSHEYS milk chocolate bar or any other of our candy products must remain intact,

and the candy wrapper announcement must cover (but not be glued onto) the entire wrapper without any cutout which

would expose any portion of the underlying wrapper. Please be aware that chocolate quickly absorbs odors that mayresult in off-flavors. Please, therefore, do not use any form of glue or adhesive when securing the candy wrapper

announcement around the bar that has an odor or flavor that might migrate to the chocolate or that is otherwise notproper for use as food product packaging. If you are over wrapping any of our HERSHEYS MINIATURS candy bars,

you must include in the package to your customers the following notice:

IMPORTANT PRODUCT INFORMATION:This product contains as assortment of HERSHEYS MINIATURES chocolate bars, which includes MR. GOODBAR

chocolate bars, HERSHEYS milk chocolate bars, SPECIAL DARK chocolate bars, and KRACKEL chocolate bars.

Allergy Information: Contains peanuts and milk ingredients. For a detailed ingredient listing, call 1-800-468-1714.

[Your Business Name][Your Business Telephone Number]

    5. In the event you wish to refer in any advertising literature (including web site) to the HERSHEYS candy bars or

any other product of Hershey Foods Corporation, you must capitalize the brand name, e.g., HERSHEYS, place the

registered trademark symbol after the brand name, e.g. HERSHEYS, and you must place the followingstatement in your advertising in a manner clearly indicating to whom these trademarks belong: Trademarks indicate

products manufactured by Hershey Foods Corporation. There is no affiliation between Hershey Foods Corporation, its

divisions or subsidiaries, and [insert your business name].

Hershey cannot and will not endorse or sponsor your business, or appear to do so, or sanction your use of a wrapper that

may violate its proprietary rights in some fashion. Please be aware that Hershey reserves the right to object to yourwrappers in the future if it is determined that your wrappers violate Hersheys proprietary rights. We appreciate your

interest in Hersheys products and trust that you will understand that we must zealously protect our trademarks and

copyrights in order to protect our shareholders and you, the consumer. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Nestl Policy

You may rewrap Nestl products, but the whole original wrapper must be intact with thenutritional information available. Please be advised that we now manufacture new flowwrappers on our Crunch bars.

    Marketing: Getting Customers

Now that you have created your first wrapper, and pretty much

have an understanding on how to create others, we will dealwith the most important part of being in business -- obtainingcustomers.

Besides the traditional ways ofgetting customers, like placingclassified ads and tacking upflyers all around town, there areother unique ways that you canuse to guarantee that yourphone will be ringing off thehook with customers wanting toplace orders.

    Samples

The first thing you will need to do is to create samples for yourcustomers to see. Decide which candies you are going to sell, and create at least 5 samples of each with a variety of differentthemes. The most popular are Birth Announcements,Weddings, Business Promotions, Birthdays, and Valentines.

The more samples you have to show, the better your chancesof obtaining the customer.

If you want to go all out, then create a sample for every majorholiday on the calendar and dont forget to include holidays ofdifferent religions and also those designated for people ofdifferent backgrounds than yourself. The more choices yougive a customer, the better the chances of getting hired and ofgetting repeat orders.

Because chocolate melts very easily, I suggest that anychocolate samples you carry be created a slightly differentway than the other types of candy. You can cut blocks of woodthat are the exact same sizes as the candy bars. Once sandedand wrapped in foil, they look just like a candy bar. Theres noneed to do hard candies and gum this way, but for chocolate it

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    16/45

    16

is highly recommended to use this technique just for thepurpose of displaying your wrappers

If you dont have someone to cut thewood out for you, then you can alwaysvisit any store that sells lumber and getone of the workers to do this for you. They may look at you weird, but mosthardware stores will cut wood for youfree if you are buying it from them and ifthey are basic straightcuts.

    Other suggestions for

making samples include using the foam board often used forscience projects or business presentations and corkboard both can easily be cut to the proper size with a basic utilityknife. If you are particularly crafty, you could also fashion theshape of a candy bar out of heavy cardboard or clay.

Next, place your samples in a nice basket that is easy to carry. You can line the basket with colored tissue or a nice linen. If itis too awkward for you to carry a basket, you can also placeyour samples in a computer notebook bag or an attractiveplastic tub with a lid. Just make sure that you are usingsomething that projects the image you are hoping for thingslike buckets, grocery bags, and worn tote bags all send anegative message.

Finally, you need to make sure you have a selection of graphicsfor your customers to choose from. I purchased several clip-artprograms (be sure to read the fine print about copyright usage. Not all clip-art CDs allow you to use their images commercially)that also included a book with all the pictures in it. I take thesewith me so that my customers can have a wide selection to

choose from. Once your business picks up, you will probablydo the same, but for now you can just print out some clip-artyou already have. You can also find free clip art on the internetand put them in a folder that you can use for showing them toyour customers, be sure you know for sure that the images are

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    17/45

    17

Royalty free and can be used commercially without infringingcopyrights.

Now that you have your samples done, you need to createsome order forms. You can create your own, or have somecustom made at your local print shop. Make them in such away as to where you can gather all the required information onone single page. Along with this, decide which paymentmethods you will accept. If you plan on doing business strictlyoffline, then you will want to accept cash, checks, and moneyorders. However, if you plan to do business online, you willwant to look into accepting credit cards.

Why credit cards? Simply put, everyone is accepting them

now, from your local retailer to the McDonalds drive-upwindow. You can either set up a merchant account or gothrough a third party merchant. Setting up a merchant accountcan be costly. On the other hand, third party merchantaccounts accept credit cards payments on your behalf for a feeor for a percentage of each sale. Set up fees for third partymerchant accounts are often low and most companies dontcharge set up fees at all.

Following, is a list of some third party merchants for you toconsider. Research them first, asking about commitment, setup fees, transaction fees, and payment policies:

    Selling

When you first start out, you will be spending a lot of timevisiting local businesses and stores to get your business

noticed. Gather your samples and go to area places ofbusinesses to see if they will let you place some of yoursamples in the store someplace. Youll be surprised at howmany places will let you do this, just make sure you speak tothe manager in charge and not someone that isnt authorized togrant you permission.

Once you have the okay of the manager, make a note of whattype of display you would like placed in the store. I usuallyframe a flyer that lists my services and the costs along with apicture of some of my samples. Leave enough room at the

bottom of the frame to glue a sample of your work to the frontof the glass.

If the manager wont let you put up a framed display, you canalways use a regular flyer with a smaller sample glued to it.Youll probably have to recheck it weekly though as little fingerscan sometimes grab the sample without their mothers realizingit.

Once at least ten stores have agreed to display your work, you

can spend some time at home creating the displays. The morestores you get your displays into, the bigger your business willgrow. But this is just one way to build youcustomer base quickly.

    The Power of Publicity

Those just starting out are often workingwith a limited marketing budget. Thatswhy is best to make use of as many publicrelations techniques as possible. Why? Because publicrelations activities are free or next to it. In addition, publicrelations tactics increase your visibility, builds your credibility inthe community, and brings in business.

    19

The single most effective public relations tool for a newbusiness is the press release. A press release can get yourname into the news and spread the word about your business.A press release is a statement prepared for distribution to themedia for the purpose of announcing an event or occurrence. You dont have to be a fantastic writer to write a release yousimply need the ability to put pen to paper and write out thefollowing:

    1. Who? Who is involved? This will probably be you,but if anyone else is involved, they should bementioned.

    2. What? What do you want to announce? It couldbe that you are now in the candy wrappingbusiness, that you have just donated your productto a non-profit, or that you are expanding yourproduct line.

    3. Where? You will want to include your businesslocation or location of the event you are promoting. For example, if you are going to hold a candywrapping seminar, where will it be held?

    4. When? When did you start offing wrappedcandies? When will the non-profit event take place?List all relevant details.

    5. Why? Include why youmade a donation, why yourseminar is valuable, or whyyou are expanding yourbusiness explain yourself.

Then put the information together in five paragraphs, one foreach of the 5 questions listed above. Edited the paragraphs forerrors and have another set of eyes look it over too. Most

publications have a preferred format, so check out theguidelines posted on the websites of publications you are mostinterested in. Also listed, will be the editors preferred methodof submission -- whether it is by fax, email, or through theirwebsite.

You want to do this right because if your release gets the rightattention, it could lead to an editor deciding to do a featurearticle on you, a radio station requesting an interview, or at thevery least, publication for all your community to read.

    Additional press release guidelines:

    1. Print the release on letterhead with your company name.If you dont yet have the letterhead, or an official name dont let that stop you, simply set the page up at follows:

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    CONTACT:Company: Phone:FAX:Email Address:

    TITLE (in bold, centered)

City, State, Date. First Paragraph Who?

    Second Paragraph - What

    2. As demonstrated above, the body of the press releasebegins with the date and city in which the press release isoriginated.

    3. Include a quote to capture attention and human interest.4. Use an easy to read basic font like Times New Roman or

    Arial.

    5. Double-space6. Keep the release to two pages or less.

Other public relations techniques that can get you noticed as

the one to go to for candy wrappers and wrapped productsinclude the following:

    1. Teach a seminar on how to wrap various types of a candyand how to present the wrapped items as special gifts.Keep it short and cover the basics. At the end of theseminar, let your students know that you can sell themvirtually any type of wrapper they might imagine. If youhave them, pass out brochures for them to take home.

    2. Some colleges may allow you to teach a 2 or 3 hourSaturday morning class in their Continuing Educationprogram. Focus course content on skills and ideas youwant to breed customers, not competition, so stay awayfrom the business angle. Sororities, scouts, and civicclubs are also great places to give a quick wrappinglesson.

    3. During peak gift giving seasons, let your local radiostations know about your unique product and asked to be

interviewed. The smaller stations are always looking forlocal people to talk to and often draw a healthy number ofregular listeners. This is particularly true of the morningprograms that many listen to as they cook breakfast fortheir kids of while they commute to work.

    4. Donate your time to a non-profit fundraiser. Offer yourproducts at a full or discounted price, but dont charge forthe time it takes you to show others how to wrap candy.

    5. Another technique you can use is a guaranteed moneymaker and guaranteed to bring you so many customersthat you wont be able to keep up with the orders alone.I use this technique to bring hits to my web site, but itcan be used to promote any type of business, includingthe one youre starting now.

First you will need to decide which candy you want tomake in bulk and which is most affordable. I use suckersand Hersheys mini candy bars. Suckers are the most

economical as you can buy hundreds of them for just afew dollars. This is one project you will probably wantthe children to help with.

You want to create wrappers that promote your businesson them for the candy you choose to use. One the front, you design it as you normally would for a regularcustomer. You then place your business information onthe back. Once you have made a nice bunch of these, and then make a nice display that can be set out besideregisters. These will be provided free and customers willdefinitely pick one up quicker than they will a businesscard. I usually place these in a small basket that can bebought at any dollar store. Make sure you place yourphone number on the wrapper so that they can call youto place their orders.

Although this last idea does cost a little more than regularclassified ads or public relations activities, the return is worththe investment. You can place a classified ad for around $30,dollars where maybe 10 people will respond, or you can buy a

bag of suckers for $3 and have 50 people respond. I havealways earned better responses by using this technique thanany other, no matter which business I am promoting.

This also goes for web-site hits. I have invested hundreds ofdollars in banner ads on-line, with little response, yet when I

place a few thousand suckers (costing me about $25.00) in anarea where businesses are, I always see my statistics go crazyon my hit counter. Yes, it also takes some time to wrap 1,000suckers, but I have my wrapper area set-up to where I canproduce 1,000 suckers easily within a few hours with the helpof a child or a friend as we visit or just during watching thenews or a DVD movie.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Each time you participate in an event, senda news release to the press. The more often your name isheard in public, the more in demand your products and serviceswill become.

    Additional Tips, Tricks, and Techniques

Mothers are very favorable customers, as they love to purchaseanything that will bring a smile to a child. One guaranteed wayto make sure that you reach a lot of mothers is to make a dealwith your local banks. Most banks already give suckers tochildren they see in cars at the drive through windows. Speakto a manager in charge about taking their suckers and doingcustomized wrapping for them for free, in exchange for your adbeing placed on the back of the wrappers. The bank gets aunique product to give their customers, and you know youradvertising is reaching the correct market. You can also do this

for other businesses that cater to acertain group.

If your local McDonalds (or anyother restaurant that gives BirthdayParties) is individually owned, visitthem also and see what kind of dealyou can work out for them to placethem in the party bags they providewith the birthday parties they host.

Offer a discount on your candies to people and businesses thatwill let you place a small ad on the back of the wrappers youcreate for them. I usually offer a 10% discount, and although Ihavent had much luck with businesses taking me up on theoffer, a lot of churches, schools and individuals may jump atthe chance to save a little money. The small discount is a smallprice to pay for the advertising you get in return and the extracustomers it will bring in.

Dont forget Halloween, its the perfect time to wrap your candy

while reaching tons of mothers with your ads.

Make a gift basket that can be placed in a hospitals gift shop, oron the maternity ward with your customized candies in them. Most hospitals will not mind you placing them on the nursescounters or in the gift shop, just make sure you get permission

first. You can create Birth Announcement Baskets and Get WellSoon Baskets.

Hospitals give new mothers a bag of gifts that include samplesand products of baby items when the new mothers leave thehospital. Most will include a sample of your candies as well.Create these samples as a normal birth announcement, andplace your ad on the back. Use hard candy or gum whenmaking these samples so that they wont melt.

For birthdays, why not create a whole PartySet-up? For each child, include a candycandle, small bag of customized candies with asmall party favor, a matching hat, and a

customized gift basket for the Birthday child, where the mother provides her present to thechild in it. Have her give you the presentbefore you create the basket.

The hats can be made out of 74-pound cardstock and are very simple to make. Just abasic circle cut to the middle and elasticattached. Mothers and children both lovethese little sets and they have proven to be very popularsellers.

In addition, contact local area entertainment companies. Thetypes of businesses that hire out clowns, Barney, and dressedup characters are great businesses to sell your products to.

A Unique Way to Sell Your Designs

I was browsing eBay one day when I saw that a lot of sellerswere selling their wrappers on this popular auction site. I

decided to try selling my templates instead of wrappers to seeif they would get any bids or not.

I was very amazed to not only get bids on my templates, butthat some of them went as high as $40.00!

    26

The way I did this is, I first designed a knock out wrapper forweddings. I scanned a picture of the candy bar wrapped, andposted an auction.

I started the auction off at $9.99 and let the bidding begin

    Get Your Creative Juices Flowing

Now this section is not for the faint at heart. Here, I will discuss other techniques you cando to make sure you stay one step ahead ofany competition you may have.

First, you need to develop a habit of lookingat ANYTHING you see in a different way thanwhat you normally see it. If youre a crafteralready, or an artist, then you probably know

what I mean. I have always had the knack to look at a stickand see something beautiful in it. When I was little, my familywas amazed at the creations I made out of the basic plants andleaves found in my back yard.

The day I realized myself that I had a unique talent, that not

many people have, was the day I took some sticks, a pile ofleaves, some pine cones and other plants, along with a bottle ofElmers glue, and spent all day creating a nativity scene forChristmas. See, I was raised in a very poor household and Iwas so jealous of all the pretty nativity scenes my friends hadwhile we were decorating our tree with popcorn. When Ifinished my nativity scene, I took it to my mother so she couldplace it under our tree. She had a fit over it. I thought nothingof this because thats what mothers do when children createthings.

Then my brothers started praising my work. This amazed mebecause my brothers usually made fun of me not praised what Idid. My pride for my nativity scene grew over the next fewweeks as more friends and family members praised me on thework I did. Then I had an aunt offer to buy it from me andthats when I realized, hey, they arent saying this to be

    27/45

    27

nicethey really mean it. I, of course did not sell, I gave it tomy mom. But thats the day I realized that I had a uniquetalent that not everyone has.

If you already have this talent, then you know exactly what Imean. If not, dont worryyou can develop your skills enoughto where you can accomplish the same thing.

First, you need to spend an hour or so in thecraft section of your local department store tofamiliarize yourself with the materials you canobtain quickly if needed. Walk up and downthe aisles studying everything on the shelvesand making mental notes of what you see. I

do this all the time at Wal-Martdrives myfamily crazy, but Im picturing in my mind thematerials on hand and what I can possibly usethem for.

Next, you want to visit nature (I know, soundsweird, but do it, its very relaxing) Rememberhow when you were little you saw faces in theclouds? Maybe in a trees bark? Start lookingfor these again. Sit outside and study the clouds until you startseeing animals or people in them again. Walk through a flowergarden and see if you can find the fairies among the blooms. Ifyoure having a hard time picturing things in nature, take achild with you and ask them to point what they see out to you.Youre basically trying to see the world with childlike eyesagain.

Once youre able to naturally see things in nature again, startfocusing on other things. For example, I can look at a ball ofyarn, grab a dollpicture a dress on the doll, and startcrocheting away until I have the dress created that I pictured in

    my mind.

Take some paper mache, an old bottle, and make a clown outof it. What you are doing is trying to get creative using yourown methods without having to rely on anothers instructions.

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    28/45

    28

Now turn that creativity towards your wrappers, and you will besurprised at what you create.

Say that you have a lady that wants 500 candy favors for herwedding guests. There are only two companies in town thatmake candy favors, and she has contacted you both and said,Dont worry about the price, I want the best, and whoevershows me the best design will get my business. OK, so how doyou ensure that you get the account?

Well, first you see what you normally do and improve it a bit.Say you usually design wedding wrappers with a little flowerbouquet on it, the brides and grooms name, etc. How aboutadding a small poem to the back of the wrapper. But of course

that is obviously simple and something you are sure yourcompetitor will think of as well.

So you sit back and think, thinkweddingswrappersweddingsringswineflowers

Basically running through your mindanything you can think of that iswedding related. Hmmmrings hit anote. Rings are small, maybe youcan glue some rings onto the

wrappers for a neat 3D effect.

    Hmmmmglue.nah, but what else.

Thats when you start going through the stuff you rememberseeing in the craft store. Hmmm ribbonsrings.and thosecute little heart-shaped hole punchersTHATS IT!!

So you rush out to grab a heart-shaped hole puncher, some

beautiful lacey ribbon, and the pack of the little plastic weddingrings you saw in the wedding section.

You design the wrapper with the poem on the back and leaveenough space on one side to punch two little hearts, eachabove the other. You thread the ribbon through the hearts, tie

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    29/45

    29

two rings on with a pretty bowand put the wrapper on yourbar. You are pleased with the results -- you have a beautifulwrapper with an added touch of class.

When you show the lady your design, she of course sees thatyou have designed it with a unique twist and you get the job.

Who says that wrappers only have tobe made of paper? If you have acustomer that wont mind paying forlittle extras, then by all means startcreating wrappers that have your ownunique touches to them.

Once you start seeing them as morethan just wrappers, the possibilities are endless. You cancreate plain black and white wrappers, glue a crayon on thebottom and have something a child can color at a birthdayparty.

You can create a valentine wrapper that has a vase printed toone side. Punch a tiny hole right on the top of the vase, andinsert a tiny flower into the hole and glue it in place.

Once you start thinking about it, you can come up with somany unique wrappers that your competition will not be able tokeep up. And hey, you know that once you start doing this, your competition will start copying your work. But dont sweatit. While your competitors are copying, youre creating and willwin every time.

Okay, now that I have you rollingon the floor with laughter, thinking Im a nutI just want topoint out that I may be a nut,

but it works, and it works everytime.

Now go watch some clouds andsee if you can find the littlebunny sitting in the grass and

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    30/45

    30

start thinking creative thoughts. Dont look at it as a stick; seeit as a beautiful fairy wand with leaves trailing on one end anda pinecone as the star.

You can also look at clip art or pictures this way and changethem a bit to make beautiful designs. To do this, you need tofamiliarize yourself with your graphics program really well. Sayyou have a picture of a flag, an, eagle and the Statue ofLiberty. You can combine these three together and make aunique wrapper for the Fourth of July.

You could put the flag in the statues hand and have the eagleflying above it, or you could put the flag in the eagles beak andhave it sitting on the torch. There are so many ways you can

get creative with graphics that you wont have any problemscreating designs that are beautiful, unique and unlike any otheroffered elsewhere. (Just be sure the graphics you are using areRoyalty Free and can be used for Commercial use)

I know one lady that created a beautiful flower garden on oneof her wrappers. She took a picture of a white fence, addedpathway with flowers on each side and a beautiful willow tree.At the end of the pathway she added a bride and groom with aflowered arch. She wrote their names to look like clouds in thesky and added a small bird with a heart flying in its beak. Herwrapper turned out so beautiful that she is able to sell it at$5.00 per wrapper easily and have people ordering it like crazy.

So get to know your graphics program well, learn it well andthink of your wrappers as canvas and clip art as your paint.

If you have any problems learning graphic design, dont worry,I thought of that as well. Wrapcandy continually adds newgraphics to the support forum for Members. If you are not amember, you may consider using

Get Other Companies to Promote For You

This is not an area I have yet tried, but one of my customersdid and she was so amazed at the results that she quit her dayjob one week after she started this sort of marketing.

This takes a bit of time to get started, but once you have it inplace then you wont have to worry about anything but fillingthe orders as they come in.

First, go through your yellow pages and highlight any businessthat you think would be interested in using your wrappers to

improve their products. Wedding consultants, florists, daycarecenters, party supply stores, etc.

Then, create a few samples of your best wrappers and visiteach of these businesses. Speak with the owners and ask themif they would like to make a little extra money off the productsthey already sell.

Basically, what you will offer them is a laminated flyer that theycan use to show customers what they can add to their products

for an additional fee. A florist can tie a candy bar to a balloonfor Valentines Day or add one to a bouquet. A party supplystore can include customized suckers to go with birthdayinvitations. For weddings, you can offer customized weddingbubbles, tea bags, etc. as favors. The list can go on and on.

Not all businesses will be interested. But if you can locate afew, it will be enough to get you started. As your popularitygrows, others will seek you out so that they can also offer yourproducts to their customers.

Once you have a few business owners interested, make anappointment for them to visit you somewhere so that you canshow them samples of what you have already created. Worktogether to create at least ten basic designs that you willpromise NOT TO USE anywhere else. Let the business owner

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    32/45

    32

know that no one else will be offered the designs he/shedecides to use.

Now you want to design templates of the designs, so that youcan easily change the information needed and get the order outfast, as a lot of these will be individual orders instead of bulk.Especially like for the florist.

Say at Valentines Day you work with the florist to design threebeautiful wrappers for her customers. She then decides to addone candy bar with one rose and one balloon to sell. She willtake the orders, send you the customers information, you willprint the wrapper, cut it out, wrap the bar and deliver it. Shemight send you 15 to 50 orders per day, based on how many

orders she gets. You charge her a flat fee of $1.50 for eachwrapper, and she will adjust her prices accordingly to make upfor the cost. Some may even up the price a bit themselves.Once you get to know the business owners well, you will findthat by working together, both of your profits will increasedramatically.

After you create designs that are suitable to the businessowner, then you will want to make a flyer out of a sheet ofpaper. Include your business information and the pictures ofthe designs. Dont put the prices on the flyer; just havesomething the owner can show the designs to her customerswith. She will let them know the prices she wants to charge.Make sure you laminate the flyer, as it will be handled a lot.

Now, there are a few problems you might encounter. One, abusiness might not want your information on the flyer, so thatno one can see where she gets her products. If they dont, then design the flyer as they want it. For those that dontmind, you will probably get people calling wanting to orderdirectly from you instead of the other business. If its a design

that you offer that business alone, then make sure you tellthem that they will have to order through the other company inorder to get that design as that design was created for themonly and you cant sell any wrappers using it to anyone else.

    33

Another thing you may want to do is stipulate that you musthave at least 48 hours or more to fill orders and that ifsomeone wants a rush order, they will have to pay extra for it.

During some holidays, you might want tohire part-time help as well so that youcan get the orders filled quickly. Whenyou hire help, let them do the grunt worklike going to purchase supplies, cutting, and wrapping, while you do the creativework and printing. And above all, MAKESURE you check with your local chamberof commerce and get that businesslicense you will need.

If youre concerned about taxes, do as I do. I throw all myreceipts into a big brown envelope and take them to H&R block.Copy all checks you get paid with, write down any cash you getpaid, and keep accurate records.

You can visit any local H&R block agency and one of theworkers will be more than happy to help you in any way thatyou may need if you have questions.

    Using Crafts to Generate Business

If you make crafts for a living, or even if just for a hobby, thenyou can use that talent to make even more profits. First Illgive you an example of how you can double your profits if youalready sell crafts for a living. Well use gift baskets as anexample, but this technique can be used for any type of craft orbaked good that you sell.

Lets say that you sell gift baskets that include bath products(beads and soaps). You usually sell these baskets at $15.99each. Now, lets have a look at those beads and soaps. If youadd a customized wrapper to the product you are alreadyselling anyway, then you can easily get double that fromcustomers. So create a wrapper for the soap, place a nice

  • 7/29/2019 Wrap Candy Book

    34/45

    34

small romantic poem on the wrapper, and add a few candies tothose baskets to increase the value of your product.

You can also create a few other items that match the theme ofthe particular basket that is being sold that can be soldindividually. Lets say that a husband wants a nice basket forValentines Day for his wife. You normally sell baskets for thisholiday that include items for a romantic night in the tub --Soap, candle (which can also be wrapped customized if candleis in a glass holder), candies that he can feed to her, bubbles, and a small bottle of oil that he can use for a massage. Well, you can also make another sale to thissame customer if you have a bottle ofChampagne that has a customized

label on it along with two wine glasseswith ribbons on the stems.

Or how about some cheese andcrackers on a tray that can be sharedby the two? (Yes, you can even putcustomized wrappers on crackers).Once you sit down and start brainstorming, you will be amazedat the types of products that can be customized to bring youmore profits in your business.

You can do this for any type of product you already sell. Ifyoure a florist, you can make candy flowers to include in yourbouquets. If you make jams and jellies, then itll be simple tomake customized labels for your jars. If you bake cookies, cover a box that holds your sweets. You can also use 74-poundcard stock to make your own boxes.

Youll be amazed at the results you get from just using theabove techniques. There are other helpful suggestions in thetips, tricks and techniques section of this manual, but I doubt

that you will have to advertise your business any other way tobring in customers. The above will have so many people callingto place orders that you just may not be able to keep up withthe orders on your own.

    A Word on Pricing

Charge $1.75 to $5.25 per wrapped item

if the included item is a simple candy bar.For example, if you charge $2.00 perpiece and you get an order for 200 piecesto be distributed at a wedding reception, and charged $75 for the custom designfee, you would gross $475 on thatparticular order. You will charge more ifthe item is gourmet candy or wine. Thelarger the order, the lower the per itemprice. If at that same wedding reception, the order was for 500 pieces instead of

200, you might charge only $1.50 per piece, grossing yourself$825 including the design fee

As with any creative business, you must distribute your productwhenever you have the opportunity. Design wrappers for yourfamily and friends in order to get your name out. Word ofmouth will be your primary form of advertising. Beyond that, contact wedding consultants, public relations departments, andevent planners. You will need business cards and brochures, aswell as samples that you can show off when visiting potential

clients. The cost to create your candies is very little. You canpick up candy by the bags at your local department store orwarehouse. If you are a member ofSams Club then you canget them even cheaper. When determining your costs, youllhave to take into account what type of candy you are creating, the cost of the candy and the time involved in designing thewrapper.

I usually charge $4.00 for the designing of any type wrappersand then charge a set fee based on which type of candy it isthey are ordering for. If they require a photo, then I charge anadditional $1.00 for this, as the photo usually requires croppingand shaping. Of course, the customer will need to provide thephoto in .jpg or .gif format, unless you have a scanner and canscan the picture yourself.

If they order from a template that is already designed, I do notcharge the $4.00 fee.

For each candy, I usually charge the following:

    Regular Size Candy Bars $1.75 - $3.50

    Life Savers $1.00 - $1.25

    Kit Kat Snacks $1.00 - $1.25

    Dentyne and Trident $1.00

You can also make good money withoutinvesting a single penny in candy bycreating wrappers only. Total cost to you isfor the paper and what little ink it takes toprint them out. I know a lot of people whosell only wrappers and still make a niceincome from doing so. The advantages ofthis is that you can sell these nationwidewithout worrying if your candy will meltduring shipment, and youll also get orders

from people who would not normally buy them alreadywrapped.

Some potential customers that like to buy wrappers only arechurches (they let the Sunday school classes do the wrapping),schools (they let the students do the wrapping), and mothers.Mothers like to purchase wrappers for birth announcements andbirthday parties so that they can add something personal in thecreation of the candies.Nursing homes have been known to buy wrappers as this givesthe residents something fun and creative to do while raisingfunds for outings.

By selling wrappers only in bulk, your profit margin increases

dramatically. Plus, you save a lot of time by not having to wrapthem yourself.

When selling wrappers only, I usually have a minimum order of25 wrappers and charge according to the type of candy. I alsocharge the regular fees if they need photos or designing.

What I normally charge per wrapper:

(I charge a little more for Photo paper)

    Regular Size Candy Bars $1.25

    Life Savers $0.50

    Kit Kat Snacks $0.25

    Dentyne and Trident $0.50

Get Your Candy Wrapping Business off the Ground

Initially getting your business off the ground includes makinguse of the marketing, sales, and public relations ideas offeredin this manual. But dont be afraid to try out your own ideas. At first, you might want to do a little workfor free so that you can earn some clienttestimonials and references. You canthen use the testimonials in brochures, press releases, and other advertisingefforts. Some clients may call and ask

you for references make sure you havethem available.

Place samples in local shops and allowcustomers to purchase the individualitems for a very low price. The idea is to get your product in thehands of others. Leave business cards next to the display.

Regarding business cards, order simple cards and give them to

everyone you know. Business cards can be purchased atprinters and office supply stores for a reasonable price if youomit color and a logo. You always add these later. If you areon a tight budget, check out vistaprint.com they offer freebusiness cards with a few design options.

    Getting a Website

Most people who love crafting will also lovecreating their own websites. They express theirown unique identity through color, graphics, style, and content. Like any new skill, it takespractice to master but is not terribly difficult tolearn. Your website will act as your storefrontand I strongly recommend you have one.

Microsoft FrontPage is a good HTML editing program forbeginners because it works a lot like Microsoft Word, with iconsand a strong help system to guide you. It is reasonably pricedat around $100. Dreamweaveris another web editor thatworks very well. However, it is quite a bit more expensive andrequires advanced skills to get the most from its manyfeatures. Cash-strapped entrepreneurs on a limited budget maywant to use the free web editor that we offer at:http://www.startpack.com/

Once you create your site, you will need a web host in order toget your website in front of the public. Hosting can range from$3.00 to $25.00 per month. Hosting companies generally sell

domain names for about $18.00 per year. For the best overallvalue, we recommend the following domain registration andhosting company: http://www.wrapcandy.com/godaddy/. GoDaddyoffers hosting services that start as low as $3.00 permonth. You can also register your domain name there forunder $8.00.

Its important to select a domain name that is easy toremember and that contains your business name or activity, such as CandyWrapper.com, or ExpressWrap.com (if ExpressWrap is your business name). Remember that your site canonly be accessed through your web address, similar to the waypeople reach you at home using a phone number. A more few things to consider

Eventually, your candy wrapping business will stop growing if

you dont have a website. In addition, your credibility as abusiness owner will be questioned if someone asks for your webaddress and you have to tell him or her that you dont haveone.

As you begin to look further into getting awebsite of your own that canaccommodate your wrapping business, you should understand a little about whatis out there.

You should know that there is dedicatedhosting and shared hosting and knowwhich one will work best for your needs.Dedicated hosting involves an entireserver and Internet connection

specifically reserved for your business activity. On the otherhand, shared servers are exactly that web sites sharing theresources of one server. Shared hosting is cheaper and less ofa commitment than dedicated hosting, but can also be a bit of ahassle. Because others are using the same resources, you could

have problems with speed, reliability, and the ability tocustomize your web site:

9 Speed - Server response times in a shared hostingsituation are directly related to the activity of the othersites you share the server with. Dedicated hosting offersmore control and greater certainty that your pages willload quickly for your sites visitors.

9 Reliability With dedicated hosting environment, youhave unlimited access to the operating system, software

applications, and database applications of the server. Youwont be impacted by security concerns that sometimescome up with shared servers.

9 Customization - A dedicated hosting situation allows youto upgrade features as needed. This is really only a

concern for those who plan to do a lot with their site, notnecessary for those featuring products and providinginformation.

Also referred to as virtual hosting, shared hosting is not as badas it might sound. Youll get the basics:

o Basic server featureso Internet connection serviceso Domain name registrationo File storage and directory serviceso An e-mail account with related services.

Most providers of shared hosting provide web site and webpage design. Youll like the price of shared hosting better thandedicated hosting and will usually be offered 24 hour supportand the option of a short term commitment. Youll get to try itall out without worry.

In addition to the sites I have already recommended, you caneasily set up a web site by using a service like godaddy.com oryahoo.com. Theyll first ask you to choose a domain name. Then, you sign up and download their software. The softwareis generally very user friendly and made for those with limitedknowledge in web site building. Youll be walked step-by-stepthrough setting up a website. You will also be providedinstructions on how to maintain it. This is important becauseyou dont want outdated material and the same old contentfrom month to month -- you want your visitors to come backtime and time again. Youll want to provide reasons for them tovisit beyond simply purchasing your product. Questions to ask

yourself when putting together your site include:

9 Is it easy to navigate?9 Would Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) help your

    potential clients towards a purchase?

9 Does it look credible? (avoid cheesy graphics, misspellings, and grammatical errors)

9 Is the content is targeted to your audience? If you areusing it to sell your candy wrappers, you want to thinkabout the things those who buy candy wrappers mightlike to see or read about.
