“DOES life have any meaning?” Countless peoplehave asked that question. Sadly, no matter how

they look at life, many are unable to escape what Aus-trian neurologist Viktor E. Frankl described as a “senseof meaninglessness and emptiness” in their lives.

Why do so many feel that way? For one thing, mil-lions the world over live in unbelievably wretched, heartbreaking conditions. Each day, they wake up topoverty, disease, senseless violence, and oppression.Their lives are truly “glutted with agitation,” as Job ofancient times said about human suffering. (Job 14:1)Their prime goal is simply to survive from one day tothe next.

Millions of others enjoy a degree of material pros-perity. Everything seems to be inplace for them to findreal satisfaction in life. But many still do not. Why? Be-cause time and again, “trouble and hurtful things”—unexpected financial setbacks or bitter tragedies, such as the death of a child—shatter their treasuredhopes and dreams.—Psalm 90:10.

Another factor deepens this pervasive feeling of“meaninglessness and emptiness.” What is that? Theextreme brevity of life. To many, it simply does notmake sense that humans, who are gifted with suchgreat potential, live such short lives. They cannot un-derstand the harsh reality that we all face: Sooner orlater, even if we escape the worst that besets mankind, death robs us of everything.—Ecclesiastes 3:19, 20.

Will Life Always Seem Meaningless?King Solomon of ancient Israel summed up the situ-

ation very well. He saw how people in his day workedhard using their talents and abilities in planting, culti-vating, building, and caring for their families, just aswe do today. He asked, in effect, ‘What does it allamount to in the end?’ Everything people do, he

WHY should you believe that life will ever be morethan just a “brief span of empty existence

through which” we pass “like a shadow,” as King Solo-mon put it? (Ecclesiastes 6:12, The New English Bible)God’s inspired Word, the Bible—an unfailingly de-pendable source of information—promises that life inthe future will be truly meaningful.—2 Timothy 3:16,17.

TheBible tells uswhatGod’s original purposewas forthe earth. It also explains why the world is filled withinjustice, oppression, and suffering. Why is it impor-tant that we understand these things? Because themain reason people think that life is completely mean-ingless is that they are unaware of—or choose to ig-nore—God’s purpose for this planet andmankindon it.

But did King Solomon believe that every-thing mankind does would always be “emp-tiness and chasing the wind”? No. He wassimply expressing a realistic view of how lifein this imperfect world turns out. However,

the inspired Word of God can give you confi-dence that things will not always be like this!

How can you find that confidence? Pleaseread the next two articles. They may helpyou to understand why life seems so mean-ingless, how this situation will be remedied, and how you can give your life real meaningeven now.

perfection forever. This fundamental truthcontradicts the commonly accepted butScripturally baseless idea that God made theearth to be some kind of testing ground forhumans, to see if they deserved to live amore meaningful life in a spirit world.—Seethe box “Must We Leave the Earth to Enjoy aMeaningful Life?” onpage 6.

God made man and woman in His image, giving them the capacity to reflect His won-derful qualities. (Genesis 1:26, 27) He madethem perfect. They had everything theyneeded to enjoy a productive, meaningfullife forever. That would include filling theearth and subduing it, transforming thewhole planet into a paradise just like the gar-den of Eden.—Genesis 1:28-31; 2:8, 9.

What Went Wrong?Obviously, something went drastically

wrong. Mankind in general poorly reflectsGod’s image. The earth is certainly no para-dise. What happened? Our original parents,Adam and Eve, abused their free will. Theywanted to “be like God,” deciding for them-selves what was morally “good and bad.”In doing so, they followed the rebelliouscourse that Satan the Devil had already tak-en.—Genesis 3:1-6.

Evil, then, is not part of some mysterious, predetermined plan of God. It came into ex-istence when Satan—and later Adam andEve—rebelled against God’s rulership. As a re-sult of their rebellion, our original parentslost Paradise andperfection, bringing sin anddeath upon not just themselves but alsotheir descendants—the whole human fami-

ly. (Genesis 3:17-19; Romans 5:12) This iswhat brought about the conditions and cir-cumstances that make life seem so meaning-less.

Why Not Stamp Out Evil Immediately? Some wonder, ‘Why did God not stamp

out evil immediately by simply destroyingSatan and the other rebels and starting overagain?’ Would that have really been wise? How would you react if you heard of a pow-erful government that immediately execut-ed anyone who challenged its authority? Donot such actions alienate fair-minded peopleand undermine a government’s moral au-thority?

God chose not to act against the rebels im-mediately. Wisely, he allowed time to pass sothat the issues raised in Eden regarding hisway of ruling would be settled—once and forall.

Removal of All EvilThe key thing to remember is this: God

has permitted evil to exist for only a limit-ed time. He has done so knowing that hecan completely undo its grievous conse-quences once the vital issues raised by rebel-lion against his way of ruling have been set-tled.

God has not abandoned his purpose forthe earth and mankind. Through the proph-et Isaiah, Jehovah assures us that He is theMaker of the earth, the one “who did notcreate it simply for nothing, who formed iteven to be inhabited.” (Isaiah 45:18) Verysoon now, he will begin bringing the earth

back to the perfect state he originally pur-posed. With the rightness of his way of rul-ing absolutely established, he will be justi-fied in using his irresistible power to enforcehiswill andutterly destroy all evil. (Isaiah 55:10, 11) In the model prayer, Jesus Christ in-cluded an appeal for God to take this action.Jesus taught us to pray: “Let your will takeplace, as in heaven, also upon earth.” (Mat-thew 6:9,10) What does that include?

God’s Will for the EarthAmong other things, “the meek ones

themselves will possess the earth.” (Psalm 37:9-11, 29; Proverbs 2:21, 22) Jesus Christ will“deliver the poorone crying forhelp, also theafflicted one.” He will save them “from op-pression and from violence.” (Psalm 72:12-14) War will be no more; nor will death, tears, pain, or suffering be anymore. Must We Leave the Earth to Enjoy a Meaningful Life? For centuries, men who

have no knowledge of God’spurpose for the earth havetaught that we must leavethe earth before we can en-joy a truly meaningful exis-tence.

Some said that souls“enjoyed some higher exis-tence prior to their entryinto individual human bod-ies.” (New Dictionary of The-ology) Others said that thesoul was “incarcerated in thebody as a punishment forthe sins which it committedin its heavenly state.”—Cyclo-pedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature.

Greek philosophers, suchas Socrates and Plato, taughtthis idea: Only when thesoul escapes from the limita-tions of a material humanbody would it be “releasedfrom its wanderings and fol-lies and fears, its wild desires

and all the other ills that be-set mankind” and dwell “inthe company of the gods forall time to come.”—Plato’sPhaedo, 81, A.

Later, so-called Christianleaders incorporated Greekphilosophers’ “assumptionsabout the inherent immor-tality of the soul” into theirteachings.—Christianity—AGlobal History.

Contrast those ideas withthree fundamental truthsfound in the Bible:

1. God’s purpose is forthe earth to be a permanenthome for humankind, not atemporary testing ground tosee who deserve to live withhim in heaven. If Adam andEve had obeyed God’s laws, they would still be alive hereon a paradise earth.—Gene-sis 1:27, 28; Psalm 115:16.

2. Whereas most religionsteach that man has a soul

—some immaterial entitythat resides within—theBible teaches somethingsimpler. Man is “a livingsoul” formed out of “dustfrom the ground.” (Genesis2:7) The Bible never de-scribes this soul as immortal. It says that the soul can bekilled or destroyed, totallyceasing to exist. (Psalm146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10;Ezekiel 18:4, 20) The firstsoul, Adam, positively diedand returned to the dustfrom which he was created. He returned to nonexistence.—Genesis 2:17; 3:19.

3. Man’s future life pros-pects depend, not on havingan immortal soul that de-parts to some spirit realm, but on God’s promise of aresurrection from the deadback to life on a paradiseearth.—Daniel 12:13; John11:24-26; Acts 24:15.

whohave died during God’s toleration of evilwill be resurrected to life here on earth, andthey will be given the opportunity to bene-fit from these and other blessings.—John 5:28, 29.

In fact, Jehovah will undo the harm thatSatan’s rebellion has caused. So completewill this remedial action be that “the formerdistresses [all the things that bring grief andpain today] will actually be forgotten.” (Isa-

iah 65:16-19) That future is guaranteed. Goddoes not lie. All his promises come true. Lifewill no longer be “emptiness and chasing thewind.” (Ecclesiastes 2:17, The New English Bi-ble) Rather, life will be filled with meaning.

But what about right now? Can knowingwhat the Bible teaches and understandingGod’s purpose for the earth add real mean-ing to your life now? The final article in thisseries takes up this question.

YOUcan find real meaning in life even now. How? Byfollowing the sound principles found in God’s

Word, the Bible. Let us examine just a fewof them.

BIBLE PRINCIPLE: “There is nothing better,” wroteKing Solomon, than that a man “should eat and indeeddrink and cause his soul to see good because of his hardwork.”—ECCLESIASTES 2:24.

We were made to find satisfaction in wholesomework. Even in the direst of circumstances, you can enjoya measure of satisfaction in life right now fromworkingdiligently and honestly.

BIBLE PRINCIPLE: “There is more happiness in givingthan there is in receiving.”—ACTS 20:35.

Many have found that doing things for others—giv-ing of their time and energy to assist others in times ofdifficulty, for example—has proved to be extremely re-warding and has added real meaning to their lives. “Donot hold back good from those to whom it is owing,”wrote Solomon, “when it happens to be in the power ofyourhand to do it.”—Proverbs 3:27.

each spend a number of hours every month in the min-istry, giving of themselves in teaching the Bible to oth-ers. “When we get home in the evening, we are tired, not just from getting older, but from giving our all inservice to our heavenly Father,” says Ralph. “It’s a goodtired!” He and his wife are happy because their life cen-ters on giving.

BIBLE PRINCIPLE: “A true companion is loving all thetime, and is a brother that is born for when there isdistress.”—PROVERBS 17:17.

Shared troubles can be much easier to bear. Englishessayist Francis Bacon wrote that for those without truefriends, “the world is but a wilderness.” Having truefriends—and being a good friend—can make life morebearable for you; it can be beautiful and satisfying.

BIBLE PRINCIPLE: “Happy are those conscious of theirspiritual need.”—MATTHEW 5:3.

Jesus thus identified a vital requirement if you wantto enjoy the fulfillment of God’s promises—recognizeand fill your “spiritual need.” Unlike animals, we havean innate need to understand the meaning and pur-pose of life. Only Jehovah God can fill that need, andhe does so throughhisWord, the Bible. Aswe saw in thepreceding article, the Bible reveals God’s purpose forthe earth. It tells us why we are here, why there is somuch suffering, and what God expects of us. Under-standing such Scriptural truths is essential to our livinga meaningful and satisfying life. Those who make timeto study the Bible and apply what they learn are happy. Why? Because they thereby build a trusting relation-ship with our Creator, “the happy God,” Jehovah.—1 Timothy 1:11.

BIBLE PRINCIPLE: “Remember your Creator . . . beforethe time of trouble comes and the years draw near whenyou will say, ‘I see no purpose in them.’ ”—ECCLESIASTES 12:1,THE NEW ENGLISH BIBLE.

King Solomon’s advice to young people, who may fora time fail to recognize the tragedies that life can bring,is relevant for all of us. Make your Creator the focus ofyour life. That is what will give your life real purpose.Reject the attitude: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrowwe are to die.” (1 Corinthians 15:32) If you put God

first, things “will turn out well” for you, saysEcclesiastes 8:12.

A girl named Wendi found that to be true. When she was young, she and her sisterlearned Spanish so that they could move tothe Dominican Republic, where there was agreater need for preachers of the Bible’s goodnews. “We made many sacrifices to servewhere there was a need, but we had the timeofour lives. I wouldn’t trade those six monthsfor anything! The blessings we received faroutweighed the sacrifices involved.”

Loyalty to God Makes Life MeaningfulBuilding a good relationship with Jehovah

can add meaning to your life in a very specialway. How? Not only did Satan lead Adam andEve into rebellion against God’s rule but healso implied that no one would remain loyalto God under test. (Job 1:9-11; 2:4) You canhelp to prove Satan a liar! How?By remainingloyal to God, by sticking to his principles, andby demonstrating that you recognize Jeho-vah’s supreme right to determine for us whatis good and what is bad.—Revelation 4:11.

We may have to endure challenges if wewant to pursue an upright course. Will thosechallenges rob us of a meaningful life? Well, imagine that a vicious enemy is slandering

our beloved friend or family member. If de-fending that dear person’s name caused ussome hardship at the hands of our enemy, would that rob us of a meaningful life? Ofcourse not! Wewould gladly endure hardshipfor such a cause. It is the same with remain-ing loyal to God. Our loyalty under currentevil conditions actually makes God’s heart re-joice.—Proverbs 27:11.

A Meaningful Life ForeverMake it your aim, then, to learn all you can

about God and his purpose. Jesus Christ him-self said: “This means everlasting life, theirtaking in knowledge of you, the only trueGod, and of the one whom you sent forth, Je-sus Christ.” (John 17:3) When God fulfills hisoriginal purpose for the earth, faithful hu-mans will enjoy what Jehovah originally in-tended for them—“everlasting life” on a para-dise earth. Then life will truly be meaningfuland satisfying.—Psalm 145:16.

Where can you find the knowledge that Je-sus talked about? In the pages of God’s in-spiredWord, the Bible. If you would like assis-tance in doing this, feel free to write to thepublishers of this magazine. They will gladlyarrange for someone to help you to learnwhat the Bible really teaches.

At the end of the day, it's all about convincing members of Jehovah's Witnesses to preach as much as they can. Really, that's what the "meaning" of this whole series of articles are about.

Yep! He's figuratively high-fiving you every time that you go through a hardship to prove some evil dude who used to dress up as a snake is a liar.

It must have killed the Governing body to change the wording in the 2012 bible to "coming to know you"

Read the bible to find meaning but whatever you do, DO NOT get assistance from Jehovah's Witnesses in how to interpret it.
