I LOVE SUNNY WORTHING

Worthing has a great location nestled between the South Downs National Park and the Sea; and boasts 5 miles of coastline. Make sure you visit the Town Centre with its great shopping and dining offer and by exploring off the main precinct you will uncover some great independent retail and hospitality gems. With over 140 places to eat and drink there is something to tempt every palate and budget; whether its chips on the beach or a fine dining experience, Worthing has it all.

Every Wednesday there is a market held in Montague Street and during the year a programme of artisan, continental and speciality markets also help to celebrate the market heritage of Worthing going back as far as 1810.

Worthing also boasts a great cultural and leisure offer including 3 theatres, a new state of the art swimming pool, a leisure centre, mini golf, sand volleyball courts and play areas for the children. To find out more about the Shopping, Dining and Cultural offer go to www.worthingtowncentre.co.uk

INFORMATION ABOUT THEWORTHING BIRDMAN EVENTThe International Birdman event is a non-powered flying competition for birdmen and women attempting to defy gravity and “fly” from a platform constructed to the southern end of Worthing Pier.

Competitors will have a run up distance of approximately 15 ft (4.6m) and they may use a flying machine with fixed, rotary, or ornithopter (flapping) wing design but the wing span cannot exceed35 ft (10.67m).

THERE ARE 3 CLASSES FORENTRANTS TO CHOOSE FROM: Leonardo Da Vinci Serious Competitors who design and build their own craft

Condor Serious Competitors who use modified hang gliders or a similar craft

Kingfishers Fun Competitors; the comic entries who raise money for charity

The Birdman Event first took to the skies in 1971 from the lifeboat pier in Selsey; in 1978 the organisers were told that they could no longer use this pier and so the event moved along the coast to Bognor Regis where it grew in popularity until 2007. When Bognor Pier was shortened safety concerns were raised over the depth of water for the Birdman Competition and in 2008 the event moved again; this time to Sunny Worthing. The 2014 event is the seventh one to be held in Worthing and the Birdman continues to attract interest from all around the globe.

The platform is made out of scaffolding and is west facing to take advantage of the predominant wind direction in this area. The launch platform stands around 15 ft (4.6m) above the pier decking and during flying the height above sea level is approximately 35 ft (10.67m).

Page 5: Worthing Birdman 2014 Programme

HOW IS THE EVENT MEASURED?With the launch window at high tide lasting only two hours,it is vital that the distances flown are measured quickly.

Trigonometry and bespoke computer software are used to measure distance flown and time in the air. Distances flown are measured using three electronic angle measuring devices that are set up level with the launch platform and on shore. Triangulation is used to accurately pinpoint the competitors’ landing position. All competitors will be measured using the same measurement constants that are calculated and input into the computer before the start of the competition. On splashdown the angles are recorded electronically by the three measuring stations and are entered into the Birdman computer which calculates the horizontal distance flown in any direction using trigonometry; it also calculates any small margin of error which can occur through fluctuating tide swell. A successful jackpot prize winner must achieve the challenge as forward distance flown; and must also cross a marker buoy set 100 metres from the end of the launch ramp with allowances being made for any movement of this buoy in the water.

WORTHING BSAC“Worthing BSAC” are a scuba diving / sub aqua club that teach and go diving. We’re a branch of the British Sub Aqua Club (the governing body for sports diving in the UK) and have an active diving and social calendar. We offer training from beginner up to advanced diver.

We welcome new and existing divers (from all agencies), and dive from our wet moored Diving RIB based in Littlehampton as well as organising trips around the UK and abroad.

We meet every Monday night at 8:30, alternating between Splash Point Pool for “wet” training, and the Broadwater Working Men’s Club which is used for socialising and theory training where we have the sole use of the function room & bar.

WATER SAFETYThe Worthing International Birdman is an extreme event and the safety of our competitors is our Number 1 priority.

To ensure that competitors are well looked after we have a great water safety team in place controlled by Worthing Beach Office. There are ribs patrolling the exclusion zone perimeter to ensure that craft not involved with the event do not cause obstructions, a rib with divers and a paramedic to ensure competitors are safe in the water, jet skis to recover competitors to shore, and boats to recover craft and debris.

After each flight the rib with the Worthing BSAC dive team and paramedic will approach and divers in the water will ensure that the competitor does not need assistance. The paramedic will check each competitor before clearance is given for them to be taken back to land, then a team of swimmers on lines will help the competitor from the jet ski to shore. r

In 2014 a new trophy is being introduced to the competition

THE DEREK TROTMAN TROPHY The Derek Trotman Trophy commemorates a man who became the spirit of Birdman both in Bognor and also in Worthing. Derek unfortunately left us this year but his contribution to the event will never be forgotten.

Derek’s family are still very much involved with the event and will be managing the platform and flights over the weekend.

When the pier in Bognor was shortened for safety reasons it became clear that the Birdman event would not be able to run in its original format. Derek’s passion for the event shone through as he started to look for a new home for the Birdman and approached Worthing Borough Council. The Council turned down the event citing they didn’t have the resources to take it on which was not a popular decision with the business community. The Worthing Town Centre Initiative who represent Town Centre businesses contacted Derek and they worked together to bring the event to Worthing, convincing the Council of the importance of the event to the Town.

The Worthing Town Centre Initiative now fund, organise and manage the event with help from the some of the Bognor Birdman team. The Council are now extremely supportive offering the resources of the Beach Office team, Health and Safety expertise and other services to help deliver a key event in Worthing’s calendar.

Without Derek the competition would not be in Worthing and so in memory of a great man the Derek Trotman Trophy will be awarded for the first time in 2014. The criteria for winning the trophy will be someone who reflects the “Spirit of the Birdman” and candidates will need to demonstrate:

Good team spirit

Willingness to help others

Contribution to the overall wellbeing of the competitors and crews

A Birdman role model

Have a focus on Charity as well as having fun

We would like to thank the family and friends of Derek Trotman for their continued support for the Worthing International Birdman and our thoughts are with them over the weekend.
