8th Annual

Lessons and Carols

Sunday, December 11

4:00 pm The annual Lessons and Carols service returns to

St. Paul’s on December 11, at 4:00 pm. Featured will

be the Adult, Youth and Children’s Choirs, and the

Handbell Choir. This year we will be accompanied by

a string quartet and oboe as well as the organ.

Our tradition of displaying Nativity sets lent by

St. Paul’s members, will continue this year and the

church will also be fully decorated for the Christmas

holiday. There will be a cookie reception afterward.

The Lessons and Carols service has come to us

through the tradition of King’s College, Cambridge,

England where it was heard for the first time in 1918

and every year since. It is a beautiful format that

allows us to hear and sing the carols of Advent and

Christmas in a candlelit setting.

Please join us for this most beautiful service.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Advent blessing to you all! Every year, I am struck anew by the juxtaposition of Advent and

December. The church season dedicated to waiting, longing, and patient expectation takes place

in possibly the busiest, most hectic month of the year.

It was not always this way, of course: the season of Advent, of preparing for the birth of Christ in

our homes and in our hearts, existed long before the craziness of the holiday season focused on

gifts, parties, and consumption. It is difficult, sometimes, to hold these two somewhat discordant

events together.

And yet we always manage, somehow. It helps, I think, when some of the events we find

ourselves busy with help to share in the spirit of hope and peace. This year, as always, we will

have many events and activities to mark the seasons of Advent and Christmas at Saint Paul’s:

--Service at Zion Baptist Church, Sunday, December 4, 5:00

--Breakfast with Santa, Saturday, December 10, 9:30-11:30

--Decorating the church, Saturday, December 10, 9:30

--Lessons and Carols, Sunday, December 11, 4:00

--Christmas Pageant, Sunday, December 18, 9:00

--Christmas Caroling, Sunday, December 18, 2:00

--Christmas Eve Worship, Saturday, December 24, 5:00, 7:00, and 11:00

--Christmas morning worship, Sunday, December 25, 9:30

We are also holding Advent Dinner Church again—a break in the week to slow down, eat

together, and consider how the light of Christ is already dawning in our world. There will be two

more dinners, on December 7 and 14.

My hope is that in the midst of this busy season, you may find time for both excitement and

peace, for celebration and hope, for patience and festivity.

May you live within the light of love in these coming days. May love call forth the songs you sing.

May love enliven your celebrations. May love be within you, and may love surround you. May you

know–deeply know–the abundance of God’s steadfast love.

In Christ,

Pastor Laura Tancredi

Aid for Friends Thank You Many thanks to James Meyers, Ryan Linn, Julien Gruber, Satori Chin, Steven Chen, Dale Decatur, and Rose McDonnell - our intrepid cooking volunteers from Friends' Central. Under the capable and enthusiastic leadership of Phyllis Hanson, they produced almost 300 nutritious homemade meals and an additional tasty 300 soups. The students raise the money to purchase groceries, plan the menu, and do all the prep and cooking themselves. Our Aid for Friends clients will greatly appreciate the warm delicious meals as we welcome the crisp fall weather. Please keep AFF trays handy as you fire up your ovens and crock pots this winter. Though our freezer is happily packed for now, the holidays are always a time that meals are much appreciated. Your leftovers become a much appreciated dinner for our AFF clients. Trays are available in the narthex - thanks so much for remembering our silent hungry neighbors. Lisa Lexa

Join us for these Advent Events

ADVENT DINNER CHURCH

This year St. Paul’s will hold three mid-week

Advent services: November 30, December 7

and December 14. Many times in the Gospels,

we see Jesus sharing a meal with his disciples

and other followers. Gathering around a table

brings people together in ways that few other

things do. We will gather at 6:00 pm and prepare a simple dinner

together. Everyone will be able to help either cooking or setting

the table. Then gathered around a meal we will consider scripture

and sacred story together. All ages are welcome to share in the

conversation. This Advent season, consider taking a few hours a

week to pause and wait with us!

LESSONS & CAROLS; NATIVITY DISPLAY

On Sunday, December 11, at 4 pm, one of our most loved

traditions, the Lessons and Carols service, will take place. With

all of our choirs participating, the musical offerings are always

beautiful and the Scripture readings set the tone for worship. This

lovely service does much to help us prepare our hearts and minds

for the coming of the Christ Child.

This year we will again feature a nativity display, which has

become an annual tradition. All nativity sets (both serious and

cute) are welcome and will be displayed in the narthex.

The sets should be delivered to the church by

Friday, December 9 so they can be viewed in conjunction with

the Lessons and Carols service, and will remain on display until

after the children’s Christmas pageant on Sunday, December 18,

after which they can be claimed by their owners, although

leaving them at church until after Christmas is also an option.

All contributions will be greatly appreciated.

DECORATING THE CHURCH

Another traditional event in preparation for Christmas is the

decorating of the church, which will take place on

Saturday, December 10. Come at 9:30 am with your gloves,

cutters and other tools and be part of the festivities. If you don’t

have time for breakfast at home, coffee and munchkins will be

available. All members (and friends) are encouraged to come;

it’s lots of fun and a wonderful way to draw worshipers into the

beauty of the events surrounding our Lord’s birth.

Help is also needed to remove the decorations on Sunday,

January 8 after the late service.

Christmas Pageant Sunday, December 18

This year’s Sunday school

Christmas Pageant will take place

on Sunday, December 18 during

the 9:00 am service.

to the Homebound

Sunday, December 18 at 2:00 pm

Join us as we sing to many of our homebound members. All are

welcome! No choir membership is required. We will meet at the

church at 2:00 pm, split into groups, and carpool and caravan to

the different residences. RSVP to the church office by

Wednesday, December 14, to allow for route planning.

Can you help lead a group instrumentally (guitar or other)? Let

Joy Baxter know as soon as possible (610-789-2408).

St. Paul's Hosts AGO Organists Master Class

This Year, St. Paul's is honored to host local organists in a master class

conducted by Sandor Kadar, Organist at First Presbyterian Church, West

Chester. The class, which is open to all organists, is being held one

Saturday a month, and is designed to improve the participant’s skills in

liturgy playing, hymn playing and improvisation.

Sandor Kadar was recently granted the Fellow of the American Guild of

Organists, the highest certification the Guild gives for playing skills. He

was the organist for the Papal Mass held in the Parkway last year.

Transition Update On behalf of Congregational Council this is an update on progress on the transition process since our last update in September.

As we had shared previously, we are working through a Synod-directed process. The aim of that process is to aid council in revisiting and articulating a vision for the future ministry of St. Paul’s. With that vision as a guide, council will develop a pastoral position description and candidate profile that best matches that vision.

We have had great feedback from the congregation as we work to articulate the vision of our ministry. That input started at the individual level with 103 responses to the Missional Assessment Profile, through small groups at the cottage dinners in September and the congregational core values exercise led by our transition consultant Pastor Saarela last month. Not to keep secrets, the five core values identified in that exercise were:

Liturgical worship characterized by inspiring music and powerful

preaching

Fellowship and meaningful connections among members

Compassionate service and outreach to the community

An inclusive welcome to all people

Engaged youth

We hope that those core values resonate with you.

In our last meetings, council has been working at identifying the qualities, characteristics and capabilities in a pastor that will drive realization of those core values. Next is development of a position description and an assessment of what resource – pastoral or other staff – is needed to fulfill those expectations.

Council continues to meet twice a month with the objective that we can reach a decision about the level of pastoral resource – one or two pastors, potentially other staff for identified ministries – and a decision about a call by mid-December. As we have said before, council has the lead role in the process articulated by the synod, but any pastoral call or calls will be put to the congregation for vote at a special meeting.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers and support as the congregation moves through this period of transition. If you have anything that you

Paul Moock Bequest-

We are delighted to share news of a wonderful gift to St. Paul’s from Paul Moock. St. Paul’s has been advised that Paul named the church as the beneficiary of one-third of his estate. Paul also designated St. Paul’s as the beneficiary of a one-third interest in an IRA. We received a distribution of over $253,000 from that IRA, all but $5,000 of which will be deposited in the Endowment Fund. Paul’s thoughtfulness and generosity will have an impact on St. Paul’s ministries for years to come.
