Connecting Generations to Grow Relationships with God, Others, and Creation
Worship in February
Super Bowl Sunday is upon us yet
again and we as a staff thought this
would be a great opportunity to kick-off
a month long sermon series focused on
the life lessons we can draw from sports
of all types. Our collective fascination /
obsession with sports provides us with
fertile ground to think about some
things that certainly transcend sports.
Victory, defeat, life being unfair, and
finishing well are all elements we find
at the heart of sports, but these are also aspects of our faith journey and are all ways in which
God in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit works to shape our lives. Our aim in this
series is not simply to feed our hunger for sports, but hopefully to use sports as a means to bet-
ter understand how Jesus Christ is at work in the world and in our lives.

United Methodist Men Michael Gris, Secretary
2013 Capital Fund Report , Richard Peters, Capital Fund Follow-up Chairman
The Latham UMC chapter of United Methodist Men (UMM) held the January 2014 meeting / prayer breakfast
on 1/5/14.
Minutes:
Outgoing President Peter Loveman opened the meeting with a prayer at 7 AM. There were 16 in atten-
dance. Following the breakfast meal, the 2014 slate of Officers was presented by Jack Matheney, voted on
and approved.
The officers are: President: Howard Trowbridge; Vice Presidents: Jim Cape and Joe Martin (Mr. Martin was
absent, Peter Loveman stood in for him); Sec/Treasurer: Michael Gris. The Rev. Dr. Hughey Reynolds did the
Service of Installation of the new officers.
Then Howard Trowbridge gave a brief bio, his general vision for the future of the group and told us he would
like to be the President for the next three years. Although unofficially, the members were in agreement re-
garding the next three years as president and offered to support him. His goal is to offer programs and oppor-
tunities for all Latham men, especially for the younger men, that they may see the benefits of our group and
become active members. The other new officers also spoke briefly regarding their duties and ideas about their
roles.
The next meeting will be February 2, 2014 at 7 AM. The meeting was closed in prayer.
The February speaker will be Gayle Nelson, Director, Top of Alabama Regional Council Of Governments and
will be talking about the services offered by TARCOG to the aging in north Alabama.
The March speaker (3/2/14 @ 7AM) will be Edith Pickens. She is the head of Secondary Programs in the
Huntsville city school system and is a Latham member. She will tell us about the new Grissom High School
that is to be built in our neighborhood.
We welcome all Latham men to attend. RSVP is encouraged to any officer or UMM member so we can be
better prepared for the amount of breakfast to prepare.
Respectfully submitted, Michael Gris
Our debt at the end of 2013 was $667,395. Our total capital fund income in 2013
was $190,170.84. The current Capital Journey pledges accounted for $174,740.84,
other contributions were $13,930.00, pledge income from past years pledges’ was
$600.00, and rental income was $900.00. In January rental income was changed to
apply to the general fund instead of the capital fund.
We have built up a balance in the capital account that is larger than we usually main-
tain for contingencies, so we have made an extra payment of $194,000 to apply to
the loan. This will cost us a fee for early payment, but will shorten the life of the
loan and result in a lower total cost. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to
the capital fund.

United Methodist Women
Children’s Choir Festival Ben Stone The North Alabama Conference of the Fellowship of
United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts will
hold our annual Children’s Choir Festival on Satur-
day, March 1, 2014.
This year, for the first time ever, the festival will be
held right here at Latham United Methodist Church.
We are so excited to help share the love of singing
with as many children from around the conference as
we can. Justin Finch, a music teacher with Jefferson
County Schools for seven years and church music
director and organist for 15 years, will be our clini-
cian for the event. He is willing to share his love and
knowledge of music with the children to provide a
wonderful day of spiritual growth as they sing to-
gether. The Festival will be a one-day event, with
registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the concert
(which is open to the public) being presented at
2:00 p.m. Registration for the event is $15.00 per
child, which includes the performance tee shirt,
snacks, and lunch. Additional shirts for chaperones
may be ordered for $5.00 each. We've just begun
practicing the festival songs in Celebration Choir
(Sunday evenings at 5:30), so there's still plenty of
time to get involved. This will be a great experience
to sing with a mass choir of children from other
churches, enjoying music, fun and fellowship with
new people.

First- the Good News:
For the Operating Budget of $801,108, by mid-
December, Latham had received a total income of
$798,437. So, we were under budget by $2671.
Latham came on very strong with contributions during
the last two Sundays in December. Indeed on 31 De-
cember, Latham received additional amounts almost at the last minute, that made it “in” for 2013.
Because of the great month of December for contributions, Latham was able to pay 100% of our Conference
and District Apportionments. For new members to the United Methodist Church, paying Apportionments is
what makes us a United Methodist Church.
Plus, we did not have to use any part of Finance’s operating budget “rainy day” funds of $12,075.
Latham’s total operating income for 2013 ($798,437) minus total expenses of $785,518 leaves Latham with a
carry-over into 2014 of $12,919.
Results: 2013 was a very good year financially for Latham in that we were able to get through it without a lot
of unanticipated expenses, especially with the physical plant.
Now, the not so good news:
Because of the historically lower contributions during the summer months, the Finance Committee asked all
committees and groups having a budgeted line item to cut back or defer until fall all expenses. Unfortunately,
“deferred” expenses became “cut backs” as 2013 progressed into the fall months. Consequently, several pro-
gram ministries, trustee plans, and Staff Parish did not spend certain amounts as planned in 2013.
So, overall, 2013 was a good year financially. Thank God for the last two weeks in December and contribu-
tions coming into the Church, but Latham cannot continue to operate like this for long and expect program
ministries to grow.
2013 Financial Report- Latham UMC Buddy Bishop, Finance Chairman
Congratulations Latham! You donated 267 shoe boxes to OCC this year which in-
cludes’ 147 packed at the packing party in early November from the individual
monthly donations. The total number of shoe boxes collected at Latham’s drop-off
site was 3,873. Thank you to the United Methodist Men for buying the plastic shoe
boxes for the packing party and to Bryan Bentley for use of the PODs and including
transportation to the Relay Center in Madison at no charge. A big thank you goes out
to to all the individuals who donated monthly items or individual boxes, postage for
shipping or volunteered to help during collection week. Also, thanks to Sarah Smyth
for her leadership in starting the monthly collections and for the Nativity Class for sponsoring the packing
party. Great job everyone!
Now for the rest of the story. Carolyn Peters and I went to Atlanta in early December to volunteer at the OCC
Processing Center. It was a beehive of activity manned by hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers who love OCC
as much as we do. We processed boxes going to Ukraine and Namibia and neared the one million shoe box
mark at that processing center. The final number released by the Atlanta Processing Center is 1.5 million shoe
boxes. What a wonderful experience! Did you know the first processing center of OCC was here in Hunts-
ville, AL in 1994? It was held in a warehouse of the Panalpina Group, an air freight company with whom
OCC has contracted with for transportation. We continue the tradition here at Latham.
