1. What was the new law passed in the U.S. in 1807? See any loopholes?

2. How did slaves keep hope alive despite brutal conditions?

3. What did Nat Turner do that your book says is important? (Where, how many killed, how long did it last, etc.)

4. Was Turner’s Revolt good or bad for slaves?

5. Know the following things that you all have had since 5th grade… Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman (and her alias), abolitionist.

6. What did William (the Lloyd) Garrison do for slavery? Did he do anything new?

7. Know who Frederick Douglass was. There’s a part of your book that says Primary Source… read his quote. It’s about the fact that FD thinks that the 4th of July is a ridiculous holiday, at least for blacks, because they aren’t free. Do you think when he got up to give his speech he should have simply said, “Thank you” and sat back down?

8. What was weird about the Grimke sisters? Do you think they had a death wish?

9. This man was the author of this book which said things like “the right of the individuals to refuse to obey laws that they feel are unjust… and an individual’s conscience (that thing that tells some of us right from wrong) is more important than the will of the majority.”

10. So the South makes some good points for why slavery should still be in existence… or do they? What are their arguments? I particularly think the one about “betterment” strikes me as funny. Not funny “haha”, but funny awkward.

11. Did all Northerners want Slavery? What were some of their fears? What was the reasoning behind these fears? What happened to “The Lloyd”?

12. What was the Gag Rule that Congress passed in 1836? Think it was a good effort to fix problems, or just kind of side-stepping the issue?
