Mercury Seminar

Promo Men Have TheirDay & Say at Chi Meet

CHICAGO - Increasing com-plexity and stature of the jobof the local record promotionmanager was the theme of thefirst semi-annual promotionseminar held at the Flying Car-pet Motor Inn by MercuryRecord Corporation last week.

The two-day workshop -which drew 31 Mercury, Philips,Smash, Fontana, Emarcy andLimelight promo personnel from24 distrib territories-proved sobeneficial that such seminarswill be staged on a semi-annualbasis, with another planned forthe fall. As originally planned, only one such conference was tobe held each year.

In his opening address, IrvingB. Green, Mercury President, told the assembled promotionmen that they were, in effect, the"foot -soldiers" in the increas-ingly competitive war within therecord industry. He emphasizedthat the ultimate success of anyrecording company in the yearsahead lay with the local promo-tion men of that company.

Outlining future plans for thedevelopment of recorded product,Green cited frequent studies il-lustrating the growth of "habit"buying by consumers. He saidthat teen-age buyers today wouldcontinue to purchase familiarproduct names in the yearsahead.

Green stressed that nearly'300,000,000 items of Mercurycorporate product had been soldin the 20 -year history of thecompany, and that each trade-marked item was a stimulus tothe corporate image with theindividual consumer. Green alsopointed out that, in the futuredevelopment of recorded product, the promotion man locally couldbe of strategic value in his abil-ity to discover and provide keyinformation about independ-ently -produced recordings andmasters.

Promo Man's Role

Irwin H. Steinberg, Exec. VP,discussed the growing import-ance, and the changing role, ofthe promo man in today's recordindustry in comparison withthat of 10 years ago. He stressedthat the local promotion man'simportance has increased as theamount of product sold throughmass merchandisers has in-creased. Steinberg outlined howchanges in methods of mass dis-tribution have changed the pro-motion man's responsibilities ac-

cordingly.Steinberg pointed out that the

totality of effort in all U.S. mar-kets must be maintained almostsimultaneously if a recording isto succeed nationally, since eachregion's activity directly con-tributes to the benefit of otherlocalities.

In the second day's sessions,Kenneth S. Myers, Vice Presi-dent and Product Manager ofMercury, initiated the seminarswith a talk on "Communicationand Marketing." Myers empha-sized both internal corporatecommunication and the necessityof getting product informationto the consumer. Both direct ad-vertising methods and "pre -sell"promotion, in which the record-ing industry currently spends$50,000,000 a year in supplyingrecorded product to radio sta-tions, were explained by Myers.

Mercury alone, he stated, "sup-plied approximately 680,000single recordings and 192,000albums annually to radio." Theultimate major exposure of rec-ords, Myers stated, is radio, whose programming time is 80%music.

Hugh Dallas, National PromoDirector for Philips, stressed theneed for close. personal workingrelationships with radio stations, the need for peomotion personnelto absorb "all information per-taining to product and artist,"the necessity of working closelywith artists' personal appear-ances, and the requirement thatthe promo man act as a "sound-ing -board" for his own specificmarket.

Proper Promo Amplified

The nature of proper promo-tion was further amplified byAlan Mink, Mercury NationalPromo Director, who stressedthe value of long-range promo-tion campaign planning and thenature of present-day promotionactivity as extremely competi-tive: In certain specific metro-politan markets today, Minksaid, there may be as many as40 radio stations and as manyas 97 contact personnel tryingto promote these stations reg-ularly.

The additional role of the pro-motion man as a publicist wasexplained by John Sippel, Pub-licity Director for the corpora-tion. The necessity for accurateinformation on recorded productfrom local markets was ex-plained by Lou Dennis, Product

Joan Berg of Bang:Another Pretty Sales Mgr.

NEW YORK-Record Worlderred against the cause ofbeauty last week, and this weektakes great pleasure in recti-fying the mistake. What hap-pened was, last week it wasannounced t h a t Roulette'sGerry Cousins was the onlyfemale sales manager in thebusiness.

T'ain't true.Bang Records has Joan Berg

filling the same role. The girl, who was recently promoted tothe position without officialannouncement from the com-pany, has been in the businessfor over six years, having pre-viously worked at Canadian -American, Congress and Phil-les in New York.

Until recently she was helm-ing Web IV, the publishingbranch of Bang. She is stilldoing that in addition to hersales duties.

As a woman, Joan toldRecord World last week, shefinds she has certain advan-tages. The feminine touchhelps, she admitted, and she be-lieves in the soft sell where herdealings with distribs are con-cerned.

Right now Joan reports thebusiest weeks at Bang for sometime with the McCoys' "ComeOn Let's Go" taking big salesstrides and the same with theNeil Diamond "Solitary Man."A new Strangeloves side, "TheHand Jive," was released lastweek.

Miss Berg, who admits tobeing mistaken to Jill St. Johnevery once in a while, says hermost important trade policy isnever hyping a record shedoesn't believe in. "I'm on thesame 'side as the distributor,"she said. "It would be foolishto shout 'hit, hit' for everyrecord. Occasionally I'll reallyflip for a record and then I'llwork as hard as I possibly can.The new Neil Diamond is one ofthem. But if a record isn'thappening, then it's not worththe effort. Move on to the nextone."-Dave Finkle.

Manager for Smash Records.Dennis' theme that "recordsaren't for listening, they're forselling" was bolstered by sem-inar guest speaker Ken Draper,WCFL (Chicago) Program Di-rector.

Other speakers were CharlesFach, VP and Director ofRecorded Product for the cor-poration; Martin Wolf berg,Comptroller; Lou Simon, Philips'Product Manager; and MikeKerr, Plant Coordinator.

Septuagenarian Mae is un-doubtedly out to show youngbits of fluff like Capitol'sMrs. Elva Miller how it'sdone.

It has been hinted thatMae's LP may contain anupdating of her old hit, "I'man Occidental Girl in anOriental Mood for Love," butthere is no confirmation ofthis.

Major Phase 4London ReleaseThree top names, new to the

label, are being offered for thefirst time on London Records'Phase 4 series, in a special newrelease of four deluxe packages, according to Herb Goldfarb,National Sales and DistributionManager.

Highlighting the group isSean Connery in the role of nar-rator for the label's new "Peterand the Wolf" and "YoungPeople's Guide to the Orchestra"package. The set also offers atop maestro name in AntolDorati, who conducts the RoyalPhilharmonic.

Charles Munch, also bows onPhase 4 as he conducts the NewPhilharmonia in a new perform-ance of Offenbach's "Gaite Pari-sienne." Rounding out the Phase4 release are two new efforts byEdmundo Ross and WernerMuller.

Powerful merchandising hasbeen planned for the four -LP re-lease, highlighted by a focus onthe packages featuring perform-ers who are new to the label.

London is also supplying apocket-size card catalog, listingall the more than eighty titlesin the current Phase 4 catalog. In another facet of the promo-tion, all salesmen will receive acopy of "Peter and the Wolf"delivered to their homes.

Goldfarb, noting that the labelexerts efforts at all levels tomake the Phase 4 product sale-able for dealers, pointed to thesuccess of the specially designedPhase 4 floor merchandiser inthe growth of the series. In aminimum of floor space, the unitholds up to 100 albums and actu-ally exposes 14 different covers. The remaining few units of themerchandiser, first offered at thestart of the SP -66 program lastDecember, will continue to beavailable until May 31.

Goldfarb also noted the power-ful response evoked by the en-tire Phase 4 line at the rackjobber and discount chain level.

The entire Phase 4 release istimed to be available underterms of the company's SP -66program, which remains in effectuntil May 31.

Where the Hullabaloo IsHOLLYWOOD - The Sunset

Boulevard structure erected byEarl Carroll in 1939 was firstcalled the Earl Carroll Theater. It became renowned as the build-ing that featured the concreteblock signature of the starsmounted and displayed on theSunset Boulevard outer wall, along with the giant cameo overwhich was proclaimed: ThroughThese Portals Pass the MostBeautiful Girls in the World.

In the '50s the club became theMoulin Rouge, where audiencesflocked to hear Sammy Davis Jr.,Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton, BobbyDarin, Louis Prima and KeelySmith.

Today, the spot is still dynam-ically alive in its third genera-tion as a major entertainmentshowplace, but a distinctly mod-ern touch has been added: theclub, now the Hullabaloo, underthe direction of Orange -EmpireProduction Company executiveGary Bookasta, features live per-formances presenting popularcontemporary recording person-alities.

Rock Hall of FameServing a clientele 15 years old

and up, the Hullabaloo is morethan just another teen nightclub:it is a large building seating over1200, the walls of which are dec-orated with five-foot high paint-ings of the top recording stars. The Hullabaloo is presently con-structing a "Rock and Roll Hallof Fame," which will feature im-portant, personal items from therecording artists, such as thedrumstick Ringo left behind atthe Hollywood Bowl, a brokenguitar string donated by theDave Clark 5 and a drum headleft by Don Murray of theTurtles.

Signatures of the recordingstars will be mounted in concreteblocks to be displayed on thefront of the Hullabaloo, placedwhere the names of the screengreats overlooked Sunset Boule-vard for nearly 30 years. Theclub has changed with the times, and the screen favorites of oldmust be replaced with modernyouth.

The opening of the Hullabalooin late 1965 prompted doubts asto the club's future, since a rockand roll palace that seated 1200was unheard of. But the doubtswere quickly dissolved when theHullobaloo became a much talked -about nightspot for teenagers. The best measurement of theHullabaloo's success is thatcapacity crowds h a v e nowturned to sro. For ex-ample, Chad and Jeremy's Hulla-baloo performance in December,1965, attracted an audience of

250. But in their recent returnengagement, at least that manywere forced to stand in the aisles, and an even larger number hadto be turned away.

A diversity of talent has beenplanned for future appearances.Thousands have recently packedthe Hullabaloo to hear the Byrds, the Yardbirds, Gary Lewis andthe Playboys, Paul Revere andthe Raiders, Peter and Gordon,Jan & Dean, the Everly Brothersand Dick & DeeDee, the Turtles, the M. F. Q., Mamas & Papas,P. J. Proby, Them, Joey Paigeand the Palace Guard.

The old Earl Carroll Theater, once the great "showplace," nowrecrystalizes as "The Rock &Roll Showplace of the World."

Mills - Hermits TuneHas a Past

"Leaning On The Lamp Post,"soaring via its MGM recordingby Herman's Hermits, has a his-tory almost as surprising as itscurrent success is exciting, ac-cording to Richard L. Rosen-thal, President of Mills Music,Inc., tune's publisher.

The Mills tune (from the pic"Hold On!") is almost 30 yearsold. A 1937 copyright, the songwas introduced at that time, coincidentally, in another mo-tion picture production,"Feather Your Nest," starringGeorge Formby. ("Leaning OnThe Lamp Post" was written bythe late Noel Gay, who alsowrote "There's S o m et hi n gAbout a Soldier," "LambethWalk," "Run, Rabbit, Run" and"The Windsor Melody.")

After its introduction, "Lean-ing On The Lamp Post, wasoften heard in English musichalls and it has been recordedon some English labels. Her-man's Hermits have been per-forming the number in theiract for some time.

Tony Bennet Clicks At GroveHOLLYWOOD - Tony Ben-

nett returned to the CocoanutGrove last week and once againproved himself the pro to anSRO, celebrity -packed openingnight audience.

Bennett opened in a relaxed, informal style and reprised hisearly Columbia hits such as"Cold Cold Heart," "Becauseof You" and "Rags to Riches."An interesting and highly effec-tive addition to Bennett's actthis time around was flutistPaul Horn who accompanied

him on every number. Bennettis known as a "singer's singer,"and he aptly demonstrated thisas he wasted little time on pat-ter during his 55 -minute turn.An enthusiastic ringsider wasJudy Garland to whom Bennettsang his version of "The Trol-ley Song." He brought the actto a dramatic closing with hiscurrent "The Shadow of YourSmile" and the song that haspractically become his trade-mark, "I Left My Heart in SanFrancisco."

Kellie Delights Melody RoomHOLLYWOOD - The Kellie

Greene Trio opened at the Sun-set Strip's Melody Room lastweek for a four -week engage-ment. Pianist, plus bass anddrums, held a capacity firstnight audience over for a sec-ond show and left them clamor-ing for more.

Miss Greene's essentiallyjazz -flavored piano lent newlife to such oldies as "BillBailey," as well as to the con-temporary standards "Shadowof Your Smile," "Moon River"and "The Girl From Ipanema."One number catching the largeaudience's undivided attention

was Miss Greene's own ar-rangement of "Mrs. Miller'sOverture" c o m p le t e withwhistling. She also takes turnsat the flute and vibes for aneffective change of pace, andoffered a particularly interest-ing treatment of "Swingin'Shepherd Blues" on both fluteand piano.

A Fox recording artist, Kel-lie has a current single "NoMoon At All" and "Move On"which she also featured in heract. Trio's well -paced showshould keep Strip spot edfor next three weeks.

NY Latin CenterBY DAVE FINKLE

NEW YORK-Francia Luban, who heads the Latin Americandepartment at Edward B. Markswhere over 50% of the catalog isLatin American, told RecordWorld last week that she feelsthe market for Latin Americanmusic has a great potential-in fact-has only been tapped.

She went on to say that a sud-den surge of interest in theLatin American catalog wouldprobably have to be touched off

by some sensa-tional single orseries of sin-gles or recordsthat proved tot h e businessthe commerci-ality of themusic.

The exec -sometime lyri-cist ("Say Si

Si" to Ernest Lecuono's music)said that she particularly feltPuerto Rican composers were be-ing overlooked or-worse-noteven being looked for. Perhapsthe best known of the youngPuerto Ricans is Marks' BobbyCapo, who wrote "Piet Canela."But even he, she averred, is rel-atively unknown to the non -La-tin American music fan.

The sad part, according toMiss Luban, of the oversight isthat she feels New York is prob-ably the most creative musicalcenter nowadays for Latin Amer-ican music, because musiciansfrom many Latin Americancountries are getting togetherin New York to work. And thisproductivity is not being com-pletely exploited.

Signs of break -through forLatin American artists, espe-cially Puerto Rican artists, areshowing, Miss Luban was quickto note. For the first time, shesaid, the Newport Jazz Festivalwill feature a Puerto Rican art-ist, Yomo Toro. The LewissohnStadium concerts this year willfeature Puerto Rican perform-ers, too.

(Last year Miss Luban wasinstrumental in planning thefirst Puerto Rican Poetry andMusic Festival at New YorkCentral Park's Delacorte Thea-ter.)

Right now just about the hot-test tune in the Marks LatinAmerican catalog is the song,"La Mentira," which the TrioLos Panchos popularized andwhich has been recorded 50times. "La Mentira" wasnamed the best Mexican songof 1965.

WHERE IT'S AT

BY KAL RUDMAN

I direct this column principally at people with E. S. P. -which stands for "Extra Soul Perception."

Before we go any further, let's check Detroit to learn whatour future hits will be. And here they are, "Sunny," BobbyHebb, Philips, owns the town, and is going pop in five days,7,000 were sold! Wingate has a giant called "Love Game,"Royal Jokers. Sweet-dispositioned 011ie McLaughlin pulledout another winner behind the Capitols and Deon Jacksoncalled "You Better Move," the Gambrells, Carla (Atco). Joe

Tex is No. 1 there, and the Temptations areright behind. The Maxine Brown is Top 15,and they proved to Pete Garris that the sideon the Chuck Jackson is "And That's Say-ing a Lot." Bobby Bland and Baby Cortezare smoking. Walter Jackson looks verygood. And that's Detroit!

Ed Wright in Cleveland reports that bothKa I Rudman the Carla Thomas and the Platters have

finally broken solidly . . . Lucky Cordell atWVON, Chicago, reports that the Roscoe Robinson is now#4 and Scepter should be able to bring it in. George Wilson, WHAT,Philadelphia is playing the flip of the Marvin Gaye because"Hitchhike" is always good. He reports big sales action onthe Ray Charles "Let's Go Get Stoned."

Fat Daddy is flipped over "Knockin' At Your Door," JimmyReed, Constellation, and I agree . . . "Ebb Tide," Patti La-Belle, is automatic . . .Little Anthony and the Royalettes arekeeping Teddy Randazzo and Stanley Catron happy . . . R & B Beat (Coro limed from page 28)

Bland is a giant in Detroit. WJLB had 5,000 people at theirFox Theater show. WCHB broke the Bobby Hebb open witha station pick . . . "You're the Sweetest Thing," JosephineTaylor, Onederful, made Top 10 with Bill Terrell, WDIA,Memphis . . . I hear that John Richbourg and the New Orleansdeejays were the big guns in breaking the Johnny Copelandin the South. It's very big in Atlanta . . . The Billy Youngon Chess is a tuff sound.

WCHB, Detroit, is with: Cash McCall; Wilson Pickett; LeeRogers. Smash: "Love Game," Royal Jokers; "Open the Doorto Your Heart," Darrow Banks, Revilot . . . Top 5 smashes inAtlanta are Carla Thomas and the Platters . . . The Invincibleson W.B. broke, also "Sweet Bitter Love," Aretha Franklin . . .

Joe Simon is selling . . . Duncan Brothers broke in Chicago,N.Y. and Cleveland. Capitol needs to get play on the RubenWright in Cleveland, Detroit and the West Coast.

Atlantic Records reports that the Jimmy Hughes is a giant.Watch for a soul record from Little Willie John's sister, MabelJohn, called, "Your Good Thing Is About To End" . . . BigWWIN play on "You're Doing Something Awfully Good,"Jackye Owens . . . Much play on the Jimmy Reed, "Knockin'On Your Door."

Nickie Lee, WAME, Miami, wants to know who is EugeneRobinson of New York. He sent a record and a note to Nickieat the station that is unbelievable. PD Lee Wilson reallyread that note all right, oh boy!

Fred Hanna in Miami flashes that "Another Rainy Day,"Eugene Pitt, Veep, has set his housewives on fire-instant re-sponse. He likes "We Belong Together," Dee and Lola, Sure -fine. Johnny Copeland made #1 in sales for Pete. The In-vincible is big.

The Temptations is a certain No. 1 giant . . . Larry Uttalflashes that the Diamond Joe broke big in Birmingham. Thereare unanimous picks on the new Van Dykes . . . Esther Phillipsis selling big for Atlantic. The new Drifters is a Bert Bernsproduction, "Up In the Streets of Harlem." A new MaryWells and a new King Curtis will be released shortly . . .

Ed Wright is very excited about the new Intertains on Up-town called, "I Need Your Love Right Now," shipping soon!

Randy Wood called very excited about "Baby It's Over," Bob& Earl, Mira, and sales are starting heavy in S.F., Charlotte,Cleveland and St. Louis . . . Late markets on the Eugene Pittinclude Baltimore, Washington, N.Y. and Miami . . . The newIntruders is called "United" and it is a complete smash inPhiladelphia. It should be the "June Bride" giant of 1966!. . . Make no mistake, "Love You 1000 Times," Platters, isselling like a real HIT.

I agree with Dick Miller, owner of KXLW, St. Louis that"That's Life," 0. C. Smith, Columbia, is a great record.

Al Jefferson of WWIN-Baltimore, found a cut in NinaSimone's Philips LP, "Broadway Blues and Ballads," thatsounded great: "Sea -line Woman." As a result, Shelby Single-ton is rushing it out as a single.

Marty Wekser, Music Director at WWRL-New York, re-ports two big breakouts this week: "My Lover's Prayer,"Otis Redding; and the new Ray Charles, both of which makehis Top 10. The Platters are Top 5, and the Billy Stewartbroke. Picks: Flirtations, Vontastics ("Lady Love"), Holly-wood Flames, Steinways, Manhattans, Jimmy Jones ("Dyna-mite", Parkway, Perigents ("Keep on Moving"), Maltese.

We are pleased that we were instrumental in getting BillBailey placed as a deejay in the one -to -four slot on KXLW-St. Louis. Dick Miller, owner of KXLW, is thrilled to getBill from WCHB-Detroit.

Just spoke with Motown's Berry Gordy and Larry Maxwell.Martha and the Vandellas' latest big one is "What Am I Goingto Do without Your Love." The "B" sides of the Martha, etc.,decks always seem to get hit action, so we will reveal the "B"side of this record, "Go Ahead and Laugh." As usual, Motownis mailing one-sided deejay copies. The Stevie Wonder albumis "Uptight," and there's fantastic action both pop and R&Bon the band "Blowing in the Wind." The new Smokey Robin-son and the Miracles will be released shortly. The Supremesare appearing in San Francisco until June 8, and newly hiredCoast promo rep Warren Lanier is taking the gals around tostations. Furthermore, lots of reports indicate that the TammiTerrell has broken extremely large.

Deep BluesFor Mitch

On New Wax

Mitch Ryder & Wheels

NEW YORK - Spearheadingthe blues revival is a young manfrom Detroit named Mitch Ryderwho heads Mitch Ryder & theDetroit Wheels. He is knowl-edgable, quiet and dedicated.

The New Voice label starswere in recently to record.

"We'll finally be cutting some-thing we really want to," Mitchsaid last week. "We spent all ofyesterday with Bob Crewe, ourproducer, and found a songwhich will be our next single. It's an original tune Bob wrote,

and we feel it's a great bluesnumber. The song is probablythe most uncommercial thingwe've cut so far, but we're will-ing to risk it. I think the marketis ready for it. Besides, I'drather have a song on therhythm and blues charts than anumber one pop hit. That wouldbe a personal accomplishmentfor us and would give us greatsatisfaction.

"Blues is our real sound, andif people want to hear us, that'swhere it's at. We've found ouraudiences really dig the deepblues numbers when we're ontour. So, if they like it in person,we feel they'll dig it on record.Bob's giving us a chance to tryit . . . Alan Stroh, our manageris behind us, and now it's up toour fans."

Their style has been describedas "Like oldtime religion gripp-ing you in the gut." Don't men-tion certain singers to Mitch:"I don't dig these singers whoreally seem to throw themselvesinto a song . . . it may be im-pressive the first time but thenyou see them again, and therethey are doing the same thing. They could be singing a nurseryrhyme, that's all the words meanto them."

As for the future, Mitch says:"I am not entirely satisfied. We

KAL RUDMAN'S

Money MusicI have it on very good authority that the tape cartridges that

President Johnson uses 'in his limousine are those of LawrenceWelk. Welk's spring tour is completely sold out at a $25,000 anight guarantee.

Now to step out with a prediction. "Sunny," Bobby Hebb,Philips, broke wide open in Detroit and is the hottest record intown. It will now go Top 5 nationally as Shelby Singleton un-limbers the heavy artillery. ... Congratulations to Paul Drew forbeing the first to prove the smash potential of the record, "SweetPea," Tommy Roe, ABC, months ago. It is a smash nationally now.Speaking of ABC, they are distributing a tremendous record thathas been widely ignored called, "Babe, My Heart's Not In ItAnymore," Steinways, Oliver.

Once again Philadelphia and Detroit have led the way on acouple of hits: Chris Montez and Frank Sinatra. . . . Dick Smithin Worcester led the way on "Red Rubber Ball," the Cyrkle, whichis a smash. . . . A lot of pop guys wouldn't believe it, but theJames Brown is a chart -topping giant, and I don't mean R&B. . . .

New York and Philly led the way on the Chiffons, which is Top10.

Trade charts showed the Frank Sinatra jumping early, butthese sales were to operators for juke -boxes. The first legit giantretail action based on top 40 play was in Philly off WIBG, fol-lowed by Cleveland and Milwaukee and Detroit. Most Top 40stations did not chart the Sinatra until Bill Gavin confirmed itspower. . . . As predicted here from the beginning, "Cool Jerk,"Capitols, is making it pop nationally, large. . . . Jr. Walker andRobert Parker are also big winners, because kids are kids all over, and they HAVE to buy something strong to dance to at theirparties. Many folk-rock records have their limitations at thoserecord hops. . . . Dusty Springfield is putting a lot of the femaleR&B soul singers to shame with a virtuoso effort in her smash,"You Don't Have To Say". . . . 4 Seasons have 'a smash, the Hon -dells came from Doug Moody in California and look big, and theFrankie Valli is picking up big strength. It is quite apparent thatShelby Singleton is again dominating the charts with the variouslabels in the Mercury Corp.

Bill Gavin fought hard, stuck to his guns and proved to beright on "Along Comes Mary," the Association; Valiant. Bill hasinsisted that this group has a major talent. This record took along time, and L. A. started it rolling. . . . WLS joined the paradeon "All These Things," Uniques, Paula, and I predict that somemore very major stations are Jumping on it. I have called this asmash from the start. Dallas and Pine Bluff proved this one out.. . . "Little Girl," Syndicate of Sound, Bell, was proven in S. F.and Northern California and now has WLS and all the key out-lets. They go with the hits. . . . Pete Garris had a much easiertime with "Mama," B. J. Thomas and this guy will be around along time. He has that country -pop soul that means a fortune.

Any station not playing Dickie Goodman, "Batman," is passingover a proven winner. Chicago and the South broke it big. . . .

There is a long list of records coming up big which we'll just list:Wailers; Barry McGuire; Outsiders; Mel Carter; Vic Dana; Jay& Americans; Susan Christie; Beau Brummels; Love; Leaves;Bobby Goldsboro; Brian Stacy; Billy Joe Royal; the Robbs; Shon-dells; Tommy McClain; Dimensions; Lesley Gore; Ike & TinaTurner; Jeannie Seely. Most of these are showing their strengthregion's, and will take the usual time to spread and hopefullybreak out of the pack. The tight -play lists will contribute to theulcers of the men whose job it is to promote these proven winners.

The Hollies and Drafi refused to lie down and die . . . The Swing -in' Medallions keeps adding Northern stations and breaking. . . .

The Animals; Jimmy Boyd; Gentrys; Capt. Beefheart; GrassRoots; Esther Phillips; Deep Six; Bobbi Staff; Poppies; Sam theSham; Walter Jackson; Tokens add to the size of the pack goingfor the sweepstakes. Try the R&B field, gentlemen, I think it isjust a little bit less crowded. But then you find that records likethe Marvin Gaye are grabbing off some of your important poppicks like at KHJ, L.A. . . . "Land of Milk and Honey," Vogues,is getting many picks.

Ned Miller penned and performed the original C&W version of"Invisible Tears" which went Top 10 on WLS. Action and requestshave begun on the Bachelors' version in their new LP on London,

MGM Cardinal Spellman Tribute

At special ceremonies held at Cardinal Spellman's residence inNew York, Mort L. Nasatir, President of MGM Records, presentsHis Eminence Cardinal Spellman with the first copy of the album,"Cardinal Spellman -50th Anniversary Tribute" which marks theCardinal's 50 years as a priest. Album depicts highlights of theCardinal's career as churchman and world figure. Present, leftto right, Mery Griffin, TV, stage and recording star who did thenarration; Nasatir; His Eminence; Thomas F. White, Director ofAdministration; and Thomas Kearns, Associate Producer of thealbum.

and it will be forced out. . . . I predict that the hit instrumental,"Sock it To 'Em J. B.," Rex Garvin, will spread from N. Y. C.-Newark to the world.

The new Sonny & Cher is already burning in L. A., "Have IStayed Too Long". . . . The new Drifters is called, "Up In TheStreets of Harlem". . . . Watch for a record on Amy by the Pen-dulums that is based on a classical theme called, "Love Is Sum-mertime."

Flash: "Little Girl," Syndicate of Sound, Bell, broke wide openin Detroit and is now a 'certain Top 5 national smash.

Note: The most striking characteristic of the record businessis how unbelievably long it takes to spread a proven pop hit na-tionally, and how much banging away at stations is required.Records such as the Tommy Roe, Syndicate of Sound, Chris Mon-tez, Frank Sinatra illustrate the point. The best way to get ahit appears to be by getting an R&B smash, and then spread itpop. The Robert Parker, Capitols, Jr. Walker and Percy Sledgeare very good examples.

Strong sales are now reported on "Better Use Your Head,"Little Anthony in St. Louis, L. A. and Pittsburgh. Sales are com-ing in Hartford, Chicago, Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami and NewOrleans. . . . At this point, the new Outsiders is picking up salesand play is almost universal. . . . "High School Days," BrianStacy, is a proven winner in Memphis, and will sell anyplace be-cause it is graduation time. If you've ever seen senior girls crythe last day, you know how affected they are.... "It's You Alone,"Wailers, U. A., is breaking in California, it may take six weeks, but it will be a national hit. . . . The Grass Roots is a smash onthe West Coast. . . . "Sweet Dreams," Tommy McLain, is spread-ing.

"Louie, Louie," Kingsmen, Wand, is as big a hit as there is inthe country, and Pete Garris is bursting his buttons. It shouldbe played heavy on every pop station. . . . "Hey Joe," Leaves,Mira, is #1 in L. A. and breaking in Memphis, broke S. F.,Seattle, Detroit, Top 10 in Denver, Top 10 Phoenix, Boston. . . .

Teddy & Pandas went on WMCA. New England keeps tellingyou! . . . "Solitary Man," Neil Diamond, just broke in Chicago, adding to S. F., Cleveland, it went on WCAO, Baltimore, is strongon KHJ, L. A., Atlanta. . . . The new Strangeloves is "HandJive." It sounds great. . . . Good play starting on the Tokens andJan and Dean. . . . "Band of Gold," Mel Carter, is making thepublisher happy with the airplay. . . . Roulette has "HankyPanky," Shondells, which owns Pittsburgh.

Jerry Greenberg is excited because "I Don't Want to Cry,"Perlean Gray, Chess, has zoomed high on Dick Smith's all -request chart at WORC-Worcester. Dick, who has called theshot on many hits, says this can be a very big pop record, butit takes a couple of weeks' play.

Cameo/Parkway is thrilled because their Detroit smash, "Bet-ter Man Than I," Terry Knight, has rocketed to No. 3 in Cleve-land. Apparently, this record only needs play to break nation-ally. It also is doing very well in Pittsburgh. WKYC Picks:We Five, Tokens, Mitch Ryder, Jimmie Rodgers, Shirley Bassey,Grass Roots. "Cool Jerk," Capitols, is a new Cleveland breakout. The McCoys and the Outsiders have broken into the Top 10.

"I Would Never Do That," Jimmy Boyd, has broken into theTop 15 at KGB -San Diego . . . The plug side on Atlantic'shot Drifters is "You Can't Love 'Em All."

Monument's Jeannie Seely is back in town this week after aswing out west and up through the midwest. While on the CoastJeannie filmed the Lloyd Thaxton show, "Shivaree" and "NinthStreet West" and appeared on several radio shows as shevisited jockeys up and down Southern California. It was like ahomecoming for the young lady as that was where she gother start in the show business world. This past weekend shedid a three day stand at Sammy C's Rivoli Club in Chicagoand also filmed the American Swingaround show with ChrisLane. Her Monument recording of "Don't Touch Me" is cur-rently holding the number one spot on hundreds of countryradio stations across the country and is now beginning tomake a big move on many pop Top 40 stations.

Three new TV stations were added last week to the growingsyndicate set to carry "The Stonemans" TV show during itsMay premiere month. WLKY-TV, in Louisville, WTOC-TV inSavannah and WATE-TV in Knoxville are the three latest pactees.Total number of markets for the show is now 14.

Guitarist Shirl Milete of Salt Lake City has moved to Nash-ville to become a full-time member of "The Waylors," thebackup group of RCA Victor's Waylon Jennings. Milete workedpart-time with Jennings before and is credited with teachingJennings his unique guitar style. Waylon has already beentabbed as a definite young man to watch.

Country music hits the Hollywood Bowl in a big way onJune 18. This word comes from Eddie Cummings of the GerryPurcell office here. The show will headline Lorne Greene, BootsRandolph and Billy Walker and will also feature Pat Buttram,Justin Tubb, Stonewall Jackson, Skeets McDonald, WarnerMack, Joe & Rose Lee Maphis, Billy Mize, Tex Williams, MarionWorth, the Canadian Sweethearts, Jerry Wallace and BonnieGuitar. This is really a tremendous package and should dogreat in the Bowl. At least it will give Biff Collie somethingto do on that Saturday night!

Columbia's Johnny Cash winds up his overseas tour this weekin Belfast, Dublin and Cork, in Ireland. Before that he was inLiverpool, Birmingham and New Castle in England and Glasgow,Manchester and Hammersmith in Scotland with a special showlast week at the Douglas House in London.

MGM's Sheb Wooley returns to the movies in Music City ona picture begun last week being produced by Ambassador Films. It's called "Country Boy" and Sheb co-stars with Paul Brinegarof "Rawhide" and Randy Boone of "The Virginian" with veteranJoe Kane doing the directing. The entire film will be doneright here which is becoming somewhat of a movie location lotlately.

It had to happen sooner or later! Chet Atkins, Arthur Fiedlerand the Boston Pops Orchestra finally got together and com-bined their music capabilities in a new Victor album entitled"The 'Pops' Goes Country" which was released this week. TheLP was recorded in Boston's Symphony Hall under the batonof Fiedler with arrangements by Richard Hayman and fabulousliner notes by John D. Loudermilk. It's got to be one of themost exciting multi -market albums to come along in many amoon.

Monument's Billy Walker is slated for an early June releaseon his first album for that label. It'll be called "Billy at HisBest" and will feature some of the great old songs with somenew ones thrown in for good measure. Billy's new single hitthe market this week and everyone who's heard it says it'sthe greatest thing Billy's done to date. It's called "A Millionand One" and has already garnered quite a few picks at sta-tions around the country.

Griff Tunes ClickSongwriter Ray Griff has a

few things clicking for himnicely these days. His "After theLaughter" is in the new Wayne

Newton "Now" album (Capitol). He also penned Sheb Wooley's"I'll Leave the Singing to theBluebirds" (MGM) and WilmaBurgess' recent "Baby" onDecca.
