Assessment Outlines – Semester Two
An Introduction Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and is on-going at ISS. Assessment
tasks for Semester Two are contained in this booklet and they are listed by subject. The tasks
are also ordered by the week when they are due; you will find this at the back of the book.
Please note the following points:
The weeks are ordered over the entire semester, weeks 1 – 18.
Student task sheets should be printed out and given to students, with the relevant
marking criteria included.
Not all tasks are done at home. Some are done in class and these are indicated by an
asterisk. In addition to these major assessment tasks, smaller, formative tasks may be
issued in the intervening weeks.
Due dates are approximate and are provided more as a guide for when the assessments
should take place. They may change if unforeseen circumstances prevent them from
happening.
The Arts in year 6 are offered over a 12 week period each. The weeks indicated as due
dates correspond to the duration of the course.
Please do not hesitate to contact the teacher concerned or either of us, for clarification if
required.

Course Outline
In Biology, the semester begins with population studies. An ecology focus comes next, where students look at the interactions of an organism with its environment, conservation issues and selected cycles (water, carbon and nitrogen). Finally, the students revise evolution and inheritance.
In Physics, students begin the semester by looking at the relation between electricity and magnetism, then they move on to radioactive decay and the uses of radioactive isotopes. They compare alpha, beta and gamma radiation. This then leads into discussion of half-life and the dangers of ionising radiation. The semester ends with revision of all topics.
In Chemistry, students begin by looking at physical and chemical changes and reversible reactions. This is followed by investigation of the manufacture of ammonia and sulfuric acid both which use gases from the air as reactants and then the chemical composition of fertilizers and their effects on plants. Towards the end of the semester, students will study the variety of purification techniques available to chemists. The course is completed by looking at common polllutants.
Revision will be ongoing in the lead up to both the Mock Examination in Week 7 and the final examinations with IGCSE papers from previous years being used as preparation.
