“George ‘grew up’ whilst he was away in Costa Rica. He met all the challenges head on, arriving home tired and

dirty but looking wonderful! He is not a natural team player but he has learnt that he can fit into and lead a team. When George arrived home he exclaimed that he had

‘found a new family’ in the expedition team.”Simon, Parent

World Challenge ProgrammesTM excite and engage, stretch and challenge, provide new skills and open doors for the future. It is not just an amazing trip to another country but a whole developmental journey that starts long before students step on a plane.

Teachers and parents tell us their “children came back as adults”, others that “it’s the most powerful teambuilding experience available”. We’re committed to making memories that last a lifetime without burdening busy teachers.

ChallengeStudents are stretched beyond their comfort zones where learning outcomes are much more powerful as they overcome adversity, adapt to new environments, understand their strengths and weaknesses and manage problems successfully.

ParticipationWe encourage real student ownership of this whole experience. Months before they depart on expedition, they must plan and prepare as a team through a carefully crafted Build-up programme to develop increased responsibility, decision making and team working skills.

EnvironmentExploring new cultures and landscapes gives students a greater sense of perspective of their own. Students learn to have a greater respect for any environment, which could be trekking through the rainforest, greeting a Massai tribe, working in a classroom or contributing to family life.

The World Challenge ethosFounded in 1987, no other company in the world has come close to organising as many developmental overseas expeditions for schools as World Challenge. But our ethos remains unchanged and runs through everything we do...

Why go on a school trip when you can go on a World Challenge? There are many reasons to choose World Challenge over the other providers claiming to be “just like World Challenge”.

No other provider offers the depth of learning outcomes delivered by our personal development syllabus, the scale of safety and back-up provided by the Operations Centre or the level of customer support provided to teachers, students and parents. The level of investment required to do this is simply out of reach of any small expedition provider.

Developing young people The World Challenge ProgrammeTM establishes a wide range of learning outcomes and can earn students up to 70 UCAS points. Our expedition leaders ‘lead from behind’, facilitating students to work as a self contained team so they can learn from mistakes and enjoy the personal rewards of success.

All inclusive No hidden fees, we guarantee no flight surcharges and you can keep the expedition tents we provide you with. We don’t even charge to enter the fundraising ‘Challenger Runs’.

Big is beautiful... at least in our industry anyway! Our size means we can offer better support and investment while our staff members only handle a small number of schools each. Your School Support Coordinator is there to help you, but we also have a Fundraising Support Team and a Customer Support Team to handle enquiries from students and parents, so you don’t have to. What’s more, every school has its own web portal with personal log-ins for everyone involved.

Why WorldChallenge?“Charlotte has been back two days and already we can see how much she has grown from the adventure. She says it was very hard at times, but is so proud of her achievements. Charlotte has told us that the World Challenge leader was truly inspirational: a motivating force who delegated the responsibility to the team, yet ultimately was in charge.”

In safe hands Our comprehensive safety and back-up provision is what we’re renowned for. All aspects are covered from industry leading medical insurance, a 24-hr staffed Operations Centre, the latest satellite communications equipment, a rapid response team to fly out to you if needed and even our own Western Union Terminal. We keep all our back-up support in-house so we can promise to be there when you need us.

Great teacher benefitsNone of the usual school trip headaches, we liaise with parents, collate all monies and do all the risk assessments. We don’t drain school resources, including teachers’ time thanks to our School Support Coordinators. Of course teachers travel for free (1:8), can claim a free first aid course and also have access to a valuable CPD programme. Teachers also get the largest discounts on expedition clothing, kit and inoculations.

Expedition pedigree Since 1987, we’ve only ever organised expeditions for young people so all decisions are based on invaluable experience. No one has taken more young people trekking at altitude by a significant margin; we understand the risks, how to combat them and crucially how to deal with the unexpected.

“The expedition enables me to interact with students in a different way from in school; they get a lot out of the programme, which is rewarding for teachers; helping to convey the World Challenge ethos is valuable; and I get to see another country for a month, which I might not otherwise visit.”

Mark, School Leader Tormead School Costa Rica, Bolivia, China and Chile

The World Challenge ProgrammeTM starts when students sign up and it builds through the months (on average about 15) before departure. It continues through careful facilitation during the expedition and is then rounded up when they return through reviewing, certification and joining an alumni network so friendships can continue for a lifetime.

World Challenge and the National Curriculum Our content rich Programme covers all eight Cross Curriculum Dimensions of the National Curriculum, the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Framework as well as Learning Outside the Classroom and Curriculum for Excellence. We encourage successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors, all without being an administrative nightmare for teachers.

Earn 70 UCAS points Students have the opportunity to earn up to 70 UCAS points (ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness - Level 3). All information for students is available online and we even help moderate portfolios so you don’t have to.

ASDAN Universities Award Every student completing the World Challenge ProgrammeTM automatically gains an ASDAN Universities Award.

International Baccalaureate Our programme can be used to fulfil the Creativity, Action and Service and Extended Essay elements of the IB Diploma.

Learning outcomes

A World Challenge is so much more than an expedition and sets out to achieve two key aims:1. To prepare students for adulthood by opening

their eyes to the real world and giving them the attitude and ability to embrace it

2. To facilitate valuable skills development linked to the National Curriculum*

* And Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland

World Challenge was advocating life skill development long before ‘Every Child Matters’ and ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ so all these years’ experience has given us a great head start. Communication, teamwork, leadership, risk management, negotiation, delegation and money management are all central to the World Challenge ProgrammeTM.

These life skills are recognised by FE Colleges, Universities and employers as being of significant value and the name ‘World Challenge’ on a CV has been proved to add great weight to any application (United Learning Trust research).

International School Award and HTI Go for it! Award Help your school earn either or both of these two Awards by completing a World Challenge ProgrammeTM. Ask us for details.

“The expedition and the people we’ve met have been so inspiring.

It’s given me a lot of motivation to get through the last year of school

and out into the world and real life! It’s made me excited about my future

and shown me that I can achieve what I want with my life.”

Thecomplete programme

The Complete Expedition Programme

A World Challenge ProgrammeTM can take anything from 12-22 months and culminates in an overseas expedition, but we hope the journey never ends. This is more than just a school trip as students complete a powerful personal journey, guided by a syllabus which is integrated with the National Curriculum and Curriculum for Excellence, delivered by experienced leaders.

Running through the World Challenge ProgrammeTM

is a 35 module personal development syllabus developed over 25 years

“We can only be a stepping stone in their lives. The Programme certainly provides a safe but challenging one. All our students had the opportunity to lead and get good feedback, gained confidence and those that could take it got pushed more. I think they have learned the need to plan, discuss, tolerate and negotiate. I personally learned the same and more. It will have knock-on effects in my teaching.”

The Build-up phaseThe Build-up phase of the World Challenge ProgrammeTM is both practical and hugely developmental. It encourages students to take real ownership of their expedition by researching the destination, fundraising to pay their fees and preparing themselves for the mental and physical challenge they are taking on. This process makes them committed to getting 110% out of every day on expedition.

We liaise directly with students and parents throughout so you don’t have to.

What does the Build-up consist of?Motivation - World Challenge ProgrammeTM Facilitators visit schools regularly to keep the team motivated.

Money Management Programme - students work through a step by step programme to help them raise the necessary funds for their trip and learn vital financial skills.

Fundraising events - we organise free to enter Challenger Runs and Challenger Abseils for a minimal charge, both available across the UK. We even provide an online fundraiser page for each team’s events.

Resources - students have access to their personal expedition website which is continually updated with video aids, news, reminders, activities and facts to help them prepare.

Ongoing communication - students can call a friendly Customer Support Team or a Fundraising Support Team with any questions they may have as well as access online chat forums with World Challenge leaders and staff. Teachers have their own School Support Coordinator.

My World Challenge Teachers, students, parents, Local Authorities and Leaders all have log-ins to their personal expedition website to monitor progress at any time.

“Anna came back a much more rounded and considerate person. Her tolerance of others’ needs and her relationships within the family were completely different and have remained so. It prepared her for university; she went away a young person and came back a young blossoming adult. A fantastic trip she thoroughly enjoyed, well done World Challenge!”

Gill, parentWheatley Park SchoolBrazil

TrainingStudents complete a two day training expedition. This camping experience encourages team bonding and develops the essential practical skills for expedition life such as risk management, provisioning, cooking, trekking scenario planning, packing a rucksack, erecting a tent, hygiene, nutrition, etc.

Teachers and expedition leaders also attend a one day Expedition Preparation Conference to learn the World Challenge safety policies and procedures and discuss their destination in workshops.

In-country acclimatisation Once in-country, time is taken to get used to the terrain, altitude, food, smells and culture as well as to iron out team working issues and handle any admin and planning tasks. The team start to rotate their team leadership roles for the duration of the expedition.

An acclimatisation trek helps prepare the team for the tougher challenges to come. Regular reviewing ensures the team learn from any mistakes.

“A truly remarkable opportunity which as a previous Head of Sixth Form I was aware of and whole heartedly supported my daughter in pursuing. She has had a relatively unchallenging youth in a very supportive environment and the opportunities offered by World Challenge are unparalleled. My daughter has returned a much wiser and mature individual with a more realistic sense of her world, the opportunities and challenges it presents for herself and others.”

TrekkingWith 55 destinations to choose from and many different treks in each, the sky really is the limit. Your team can choose a trek to suit their preferred environment and physical ability, you may even use horses, camels or elephants!

From mountain peaks, dense jungles and rich valleys to savannah plains and volcanoes, World Challenge will have something to inspire you and your team. You could be navigating through lush jungles in Costa Rica or Borneo, climbing Mt Kenya, trekking through canyons in Namibia or exploring a remote region of Ladakh, deep in the Indian Himalaya.

Wherever the trek, our leaders take a step back and let the students make the decisions.

What to eat, when to eat, how far to trek, who carries what, what time to wake up... the leader keeps the group safe but lets them make mistakes they will learn from. By the end of their last trek, a group of disparate individuals becomes one united team.

Diary entry from the team

“Today was the big one as far as trekking was concerned. We all woke up early in anticipation of 4 hours’ trekking. Once we got over the Pass, then it was downhill most of the way to our overnight camp. The going was quite tough, working against the altitude and heat. We walked together as a group until we were approaching the top, when Laura sprinted ahead to get some photos of us getting to the top. It was a fantastic feeling when we got up there, mainly because we all made it despite some of the team’s illnesses. It was quite surreal thinking that we were higher than Mont Blanc. We got some photos before a group of us took a short walk up a small hill to get some more views of the surrounding valley. Here, we were at 5030m and could see everything for miles around. We set off downhill towards our campsite at Shingo in high spirits.”

Community projectFor many this is the most rewarding part of the expedition where they can experience real cultural interaction. Typically about a week long, students choose from a range of community project options, ranging from building basic amenities in a remote Andean village in Ecuador, renovating classrooms in a Himalayan village or working in a turtle sanctuary.

We also have an expanding range of long term projects where a series of expedition teams will each complete part of a larger project to have an even greater impact on the local community.

All our projects are sustainable and will continue to benefit the community long after the team has left and many are now affiliated to a local, national or global charity.

Research shows that parents in particular value this phase of the expedition as they want their children to open their eyes to the real world, away from their computers, TVs and mobile phones where they can put things into perspective. The team leaves their project site with a feeling of having made a difference and wiser for their encounter with people who hold a very different set of values.

Community projects

”The project here was a great success. The group from Backwell School did a wonderful job of constructing a cooking shelter to be used by the local women when they are cooking school food. I believe that the group enjoyed themselves, and they really were a pleasure to work with. I was highly impressed with their ability to accept local conditions and culture.”

“Others should take part in an expedition because it is a once in a lifetime experience - I know everyone says that, but you can’t appreciate it until you’re out there doing it. The fact that I raised the money on my own merit makes it even more satisfying now that I’ve completed my expedition. I enjoyed every minute and I want others to have the same experience.”

Alice, student Bromley High School The Maya Route

The final few days of the expedition is spent relaxing, a chance to take in everything they have seen, felt, done and learnt and to celebrate their new friendships and achievements. Whether sitting on a beautiful beach, visiting the Taj Mahal or experiencing the thrills of white water rafting, the team will review lessons and reflect on future plans.

On returning home, students log back into their personal web page to review their whole experience, capturing the valuable lessons they will carry through life and download their certificate of personal achievement. They will present their experiences back to their school and can join the World Challenge Alumni network. Here they can share experiences, photos and videos on Flickr, Facebook and YouTube and access resources to help make the most of their World Challenge experience on CVs and application forms.

“The experience was excellent for George. The lead up to it, having to gather the money by organising his own sponsored cycle ride amongst other things taught him as much as the trip itself. Since the expedition, he is aware of the need to plan, more aware of others, a better team member and an improved leader.”
