This session:

• Tax, National Insurance and your Right to work.

• Where to find jobs

• Key concepts in the UK labour market

• This presentation is available on the international students pages of the Careers Service website – www.rhul.ac.uk/careers

What do you know already? True or False?

• All non-EU students can work part-time during term

• Graduate employers prefer candidates with work experience

• Masters students can work full time during the summer

• Students are exempt from paying tax

• Employers prefer your friends to cover your shift if you cannot work

• National Insurance was made optional in 2003

• There is no minimum wage for foreign workers

• All employers will treat you fairly, all the time

• Very few international students manage to get part-time jobs

The only restriction to working in the UK on your student visa if…

……Your passport contains one of the following:• No work • Work prohibited

because this would be a breach of your immigration conditions and a criminal offence. You can see examples of passport stamps that allow and prohibit work at: www.ukcisa.org.uk/files/pdf/working/work_during_stamps.pdf

These stamps are very uncommon and therefore this means that you will undoubtedly be allowed to work for:

• up to 20 hours per week term-time • 40 hours per week during vacations.

Careers Service is not able to give Visa advice:

please go to International Student Office in FW 139 for advice and see http://www.rhul.ac.uk/international/support/studentsupportservices/home.aspx
