Parents of 5th Grade Students
Parents of 5th Grade Students:
In order to assist with the identification of students for ELA(English/Language Arts) enrichment experiences/programming at the middle school, fifth graders who meet at least one of the following initial criteria will be taking the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Reading and Language Arts Tests this winter: GT Reading Identified, GI (General Intellectual) Identified, ELA Forward Exam score of 90th % or above, Fall Aimsweb MAZE score of 90th % or above, or ELA Talent Pool participation in 4th or 5th grade. The results of these tests will be used in combination with several other pieces of data to help determine whether or not students meet the guidelines established for enriched experiences at the middle school.

Dear Parents/Guardians:
The New Year is off to a great start at Franklin. Your
children are working hard and enjoying their friends
and teachers. This month at Franklin you have an
opportunity to join your child(ren) for a traveling
museum visit. Colossal Fossil will be presenting on
Thursday, Jan. 18th from 6:00-7:00 PM. in the
Gym. Boys and Girls Club will host dinner prior to the
event from 5:15-5:45 PM. Reservations are needed
for dinner by Monday, 1/15/18. Email at
[email protected] or return the flyer that
went home last week.
Between dinner and the museum presentation, I will
be leading a short Annual Title 1 meeting. You are
welcome to stop by the library to learn more about
the Title 1 program at Franklin and how families can
get involved in Title 1 activities. Title 1 is
a schoolwide programand reform strategy
designed to upgrade the entire
educational program at Franklin. Its primary goal is
to ensure that all students, particularly those who are
low achieving, demonstrate proficient and advanced
levels of achievement on State academic
achievement standards.

I hope you can stop by to learn more about this
funding source and have a chance to ask questions
or provide feedback about the educational program
at Franklin.

January~Diversity 5 TIPS: THE ELEMENTARY & PRETEEN YEARS (Source: www.tolerance.org)
1. Model it. Talking to your child about the importance of embracing difference and treating others with respect is essential, but it’s
not enough. Your actions, both subtle and overt, are what she will emulate.
2. Acknowledge difference. Rather than teaching children that we are all the same, acknowledge the many ways people are different,
and emphasize some of the positive aspects of our differences – language diversity and various music and cooking styles, for
example. Likewise, be honest about instances, historical and current, when people have been mistreated because of their differences.
Encourage your child to talk about what makes him different, and discuss ways that may have helped or hurt him at times. After that,
finding similarities becomes even more powerful, creating a sense of common ground.
3. Challenge intolerance. If your child says or does something indicating bias or prejudice, don’t meet the action with silence. Silence
indicates acceptance, and a simple command – “Don’t say that” – is not enough. First try to find the root of the action or comment:
“What made you say that about Sam?” Then, explain why the action or comment was unacceptable.
4. Seize teachable moments. Look for everyday activities that can serve as springboards for discussion. School Age children respond
better to lessons that involve real-life examples, than to artificial or staged discussions about issues. For example, if you’re watching
TV together, talk about why certain groups often are portrayed in stereotypical roles.
5. Emphasize the positive. Just as you should challenge your child’s actions if they indicate bias or prejudice, it’s important to praise
him for behavior that shows respect and empathy for others. Catch your child treating people kindly, let her know you noticed and
discuss why it’s a desirable behavior.
Please contact Mrs. Krzanowski with any questions.

WAUSAU SCHOOL DISTRICT GIFTED & TALENTED STUDENT NOMINATION PROCESS
Nominations are now being accepted from parents and teachers of second through fifth grade students in need of gifted and talented evaluations. Parents and teachers are welcome to nominate students who are currently achieving at a high level in mathematics and/or reading, approximately at the top 5% of the class. Teachers have already nominated some students for these evaluations. If you have already completed a Permission to Evaluate for Gifted and Talented Identification Form, no further steps need to be taken. Students who are already identified as gifted and talented do not need to be re-evaluated.
Parents whose second through fifth grade child has not been previously nominated as gifted and talented and who feel that they have a high achieving child may pick up a Permission to Evaluate for Gifted and Talented Identification Form with the Parent Inventory Form on the back from the school office. Nominations from parents are due by January 30, 2018.
When the completed parent forms are returned to the school office, each student will be scheduled for several assessments. These will be done sometime during the school day. These assessments, along with other test data, will provide the district with a student profile. This profile will help determine whether or not a child meets the District’s guidelines for gifted and talented identification. The assessment review is expected to be completed in May and the results will be shared before the end of the school year.
The Wausau School District recognizes that appropriate instructional challenge is needed for all students regardless of ability. The GT identification process is one way to help us provide for the educational needs of high ability students. Should you need further information, please contact your building’s GT Learning Resource Teacher or Tammy Steckbauer, Coordinator for Gifted and Talented, at 715-261-0220.
