Hello for this week! One of my great lasting impressions and memory of your school revolves around the community spirit and events that in many ways typify the benefits and good fortune of living in a closely connected rural community such as Avenel. Over the last week, two stand out events in many ways were symbolic of that school and community spirit namely The Bike Hike and The Gala Dinner. And with barely time to catch breath we will be hosting a much anticipated Avenel event, The Fete & Clearing Sale the weekend after Cup Day. My hat off to everyone who pitches in and their community spirit to make these Avenel feature events work! Gala Dinner Success I had the great pleasure of attending one of Avenel’s great events last Friday evening. Our school and kindergarten community spent a most convivial evening at the Gala Dinner at Fowles Winery. Many thanks to our dedicated P&F and the Kindergarten Committee for such a special evening; many thanks also to Matt & Lou Fowles and the many sponsors listed below for their support of this event. It certainly was a great night to support education in our community! Thanks you to the following for donating the door prizes – Avenel Meats, Brave Goose Vineyards, Joy John Wine, Bank Street Pizza, Avenel Pharmacy and Laura & Scott Jeffery. Bike Hike The Bike Hike is one of our great annual events for our students and for the connection between students, teachers and parents of local schools. The Bike Hike now offers Grade 5 & 6 students from Seymour College, Nagambie Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School and Avenel Primary School the rewarding challenge of three days of bike riding from Bonnie Doon to Tallarook and camping out along the way. Such an event requires heaps of additional, voluntary planning and organisation by staff and volunteers and support from our school’s parents – many thanks to everyone who was involved! And most of all, congratulations to all of our riders, student and adult, for their involvement, training and resilience throughout! Fete & Clearing sale Another huge event, and important fund-raiser and community event is the annual Fete & Clearing sale. As they say many hands make light work, so if you haven’t found time to get around to putting your name down to help out, it would really be great if you can.
Next Week!!!! School is open next Monday for students and staff. Tuesday is a Public Holiday. I certainly understand that many industries and parents take the Monday as a Leave Day to enjoy a Long weekend and this will affect family plans so also understand if students are away for family reasons. Can we just ask that you notify us through Compass before-hand so that we can faithfully exercise our duty of care on student whereabouts? The school bus will be running on Monday. Somers Camp Best wishes to our students, Larni, Ella Jade, Micah and Brendan who will be attending Somers Camp from next Tuesday. I think that’s all from me for this week! Safe journeys for those heading away on the Cup extended weekend. Very best wishes Graham
OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW …. CONGRATULATIONS – to Sarah and Travis on the safe arrival of Georgia Louise last Sunday. 7lb 3oz’s. GRADE 6 VALEDICTORY DINNER COORDINATORS(S) - One of the great features of our school culture is our Valedictory Dinner which has been running for over 25 years. Each year our Grade 5 parents cater for our outgoing Grade 6 students, providing them with a festive end to their primary school years. A special feature of the event is that our Grade 5 students act as the wait-staff on the night. At this point in our planning,
we are seeking volunteers amongst our Grade 5 parents to co-ordinate the event. If you are interested in being involved in the planning of this great event, please leave your name with our office. HEAD LICE – We have had reports of our ‘unwanted’ school pets lurking around in hair at present. Please check your child’s hair and treat if necessary to that we can keep these unwanted guests at bay. Thank you. GASTRO – We have had several cases of gastro reported. We remind parents that students must be kept home from school for a minimum of 48 hours after diarrhea or vomiting stops.
PARENTS & FRIENDS NEWS
Thank you to those who have volunteered their time over the Fete and Clearing Sale weekend. To ensure that this great, major fundraising event is a successful one, we need assistance from all the primary school community. Even if you can commit just a little time to assist on the day, it would be greatly appreciated so please complete the signup sheet at the end of this newsletter and return it to the office. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
The 1st prize for the Fete raffle is a camping swag, an esky plus a $100 Avenel Meats voucher, - total value $700.00. Second Prize is an “Experience Avenel” package valued at approx. $250.00. Please make every effort to sell your book of tickets. More ticket books are available from the office if you require them. Our hampers for the raffle are looking very depleted at the moment!!! Any donations from the community for our Fete Raffle Prizes would
be appreciated. This year we have 3 hampers a Pamper Hamper, Outdoor
Hamper and Family Hamper. Remember your imagination is the only limitation when it comes to thinking of what you can donate.
