Lifting Beam Task

• When I started I worked with Mechanical Engineering Graduate Sarah Griffiths

• My first task was to assess an old design for a lifting beam and produce a calculation document to BS 2573

• The old beam caused a lot of stress on some areas and was only just within the regulations, but then had minimal stress in other areas and was therefore wasting materials

• I then redesigned the lifting beam to increase the efficiency and produced a new calculation document

• The redesign kept the original specifications of a SWL of 1500kg and rough dimensions

Pallet Redesign Task

• My next project was with Mechanical Engineering Graduate Rob Speers

• I was tasked with redesigning a pallet to increase cost efficiency

• The original design used multiple layers of laser cut sheets but I was able to replace most of them with box section which is significantly cheaper

• I was also tasked with designing a testing rig for a “Swivel elbow” based on a specification document

• I kept costs low as it was a single use design• I created some 3d models in Inventor and

engineering drawings in AutoCAD

Learning and Development Work

• While here I have been supported by the Learning and Development team. They ran 2 intern events, one hosted in Irlam and one at Radar Road

• The events were made up of presentations by Cavendish employees and activities ran by Jamie and Louise

• The Learning and Development team gave me a task to research the company by talking to the graduates. I was given a list of the 2014 starting grads and was told to contact and setup meetings so I could “interview” them

• The project taught me that when I leave university there is still a learning aspect to employment and if I were to join a scheme I would be supported on my route to chartership

CE Marking Presentation

• Eric Calvert – Functional Head of Mechanical Engineering - is doing a “Lunch and Learn” presentation on CE marking and asked me to prepare a slideshow presentation for him

• I extracted information from the Cavendish website and the Machinery Directive to create the slide show, I also found real life examples from the internet

• I learned a lot about the formatting of the CE mark and the China Export mark which will be

invaluable to my future career

Ergonomics Review

• After a meeting for a project being worked on, the use of hand operation for the machinery in question was proposed

• I was tasked with creating a document reviewing the ergonomic viability for hand winding these platforms

• I spoke with a member of the human factors department (David Gledhill) who gave me a copy of the Sellafield Human Factors Guidance

• I made calculations with guidance from the documents and evaluated whether the proposal was acceptable

• I stated that this method would cause more risk to operators and would not be recommended from a human factors point of view

Standards Work

• Eric first introduced me to the Machinery Directive and Harmonised Standards in my fourth week of my placement

• I was tasked with establishing whether a piece hydraulics control equipment received from an external company required a Declaration of Incorporation. I concluded that it was under sound engineering practice so it did not

• During my 6th week I worked through BS EN 1494:2000+A1:2008 (Mobile or movable jacks and associated lifting equipment) for a project Eric was working on

• I helped pick out the key points of some standards for the SMF 240 design review which formed the basis for the index I have been working on

Standards Index

• My most recent project has been to create an Index of the standards in Appendix 4 of ES-PRD-203. The Appendix contains a table listing the standards likely to relate to Cavendish Nuclear workscopes

• I first updated the procedure and stated any alterations that may be required

• I placed all the standards I had into a file and ordered them depending on their type (A, B, or C) and their number

• I began reading through each standard by picking out any key points and adding them to a document

Standards Index cont.

• Below are the standards I was able to index

• I handed over the project to Elliot Taylor and we were able to expand the index to cover the remaining relevant standards listed in ES-PRD-203

• The index will be very beneficial to future projects, as it will form the basis for technical requirement documents which Cavendish require before starting a design project. Eric plans to introduce it to the design manual for ease of access by the design team

Has the placement been beneficial?

• Over my 11 weeks here I have been introduced to things such as the UK-SPEC and British Standards which will be crucial in my future career

• I have attempted to map all my work to the UK-SPEC (something I would be doing in the future to earn professional registration)

• I have enjoyed my time here and am grateful for the experience I have gained. I will be looking for another placement opportunity next summer

• The support from the Learning and Development team was helpful and made me feel more valued and looked after as an intern

• The only thing I believe was missing from my placement was more hands on experience (e.g. in the TDC), there was some testing planned for me, but unfortunately it was pushed back and I was unable to complete it

• I have created a full report of my summer placements which contains more details of my work and projects
