United Methodist Women of Indiana
Words From Our President
President’s Message
The UMW members who attended the
Assembly 2014 certainly had a wonderful time and
came back home full of the spirit and with a new
awareness of where our mission dollars go. The
whole weekend experience from workshops, worship
time, Keynote Speaker Hillary Clinton and other
presenters were a great inspiration.
But time moves on and we must start thinking
about Mission u in July. We have two scholarship
winners who are excited about attending, Diane
Spencer and Bonnie Gamson.
The warm weather is finally here and soon we
will be busy with outside activities, ballgames, 4-H
and family vacations etc. I wish for you a blessed and
safe summer.
Remember UMW CAN “Make It Happen!”
Yours in Christ,
Connie Pearson, NC District President

Communications
We are still trying to locate contact
people for as many churches in our
district as possible. Some churches
don’t have what they consider to be
“official” UMW units. However, any woman of
the United Methodist Church is considered to be a
part of United Methodist Women! There are so
many opportunities and information that we would
love to share with ALL women of our church.
If your church has an active cluster, I would
encourage you to ask the women of your
neighboring churches if they are receiving the
North Central Connection newsletter. They do not
need to be sending pledges or askings into our
District to simply receive information. Even if one
woman in the church would like to receive the
newsletter, she could share the information with
others. I would be happy to add women to our
mailing list, either electronic or by mail.

Many thanks to all units who got
their unit numbers reported to me for the Conference
report! I can report that we had 38 units responding
with a membership of 1,154. That’s a lot of dedicated
women! I encourage you to continue to find ways to
grow in UMW by participating in the many wonderful
opportunities provided. Retreats, conferences,
Mission u, small study groups, unit meetings, are all
ways of growing and expanding our minds and souls.
Welcome with me this beautiful spring weather to
Indiana and continue to pray and to work for the
efforts of our UMW around the world.
Many blessings,

Treasurer Notice!
Thanks to all units for this first
quarter pledges. The North Central
District is at 21.9%. We are on track to
meet our District Pledge again this
year.
The North Central District is responsible for the
Christmas Gifts for the residents of Lucille Raines.
Each unit is asked to submit $40 for this project, so
we can reach the $1,225 needed. This amount should
be submitted to me, North Central Treasurer and then
will be forwarded to Lucille Raines. Your help will
be appreciated on this project.
Money is the Mortar- the Mission u project monies should also be submitted to the North District
Treasurer.
There still seems to be some question about where
to send pledges and asking monies. All monies need
to be mailed to: Mar ilyn Chittick, 1705 S.
Williams Rd., Frankfort, IN 46041-3211.Phone 765-

If you have questions please call me or email and
I’ll try to help you. Hope to see you at Mission u in
July.

Education and Interpretation
Education is important. We hope that each church will have a representative at the
Mission u in Greencastle, IN, this year. UMW offers many opportunities to learn more and
grow spiritually.
Most of all you can PRAY. Many of the issues UMW is concerned about can be found
at: prod.umwomen.org:88/what-we-do/service-and-advocacy; or http://
prod.umwomen.org:88/members-leaders/action/alerts. Register, it is FREE, sign in and
join today and PRAY for these causes and our mission efforts.
Read Response Magazine and New W orld Outlook , you will be as proud as I am to be a par t of such a
group that helps so many women, children and families. And these count toward our Reading Program!
#1. Read this newsletter. Give email addresses for all your members and they too will receive this
newsletter. You can check out the websites for yourself: umwonline.org/ or become an online member:
umwonline.org/ . Look at the Indiana Conference website: www.inumc.org/umw or the Global Missions:
wmission.org/ww.umc . Join Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UMWomen
We have two main giving opportunities also, Prayer and Self Denial around Lent and World Thank Offering
around Thanksgiving. Save your change, every penny counts. Can I have an Amen?
There are so many opportunities to educate yourself and grow in the Lord. My prayer is that you will take
advantage of them.
Blessings to you all.

Social Action—Human Trafficking
We have heard about human
trafficking, but is there trafficking in
Indiana? Yes, there is. On May 7 in
Hancock County, two men from
Honduras were attempting to take two girls,
approximately 12 or 13 years old, to Columbus, Ohio, to
work. A Trooper had stopped the car and then realized
what had happened and the girls were saved.
According to the UMW, human trafficking is the
second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in
the world. Some 12.3 million children and adults
around the world are currently in forced labor, bonded
labor and forced prostitution. In the United States an
estimated 500,000 to 2 million people are victimized by
trafficking each year.
There are ways to spot human trafficking. Victims
often live on or near work premises. Bouncers, guards,
guard dogs or barbed wire may be present. Victims lack
private space, personal possessions and financial
records. Victims may be branded or have other
scarring indicating ownership. If you see any of
these warning signs, contact your local law
enforcement about human trafficking in your
community.
Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) is starting a
human trafficking research center. In the United
States, 300,000 children are at risk of being
prostituted. According to the National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children, the average age of a
sex trafficked child is 13-14 years old. ( Information
from the Marion Chronicle-Tribune).
Prayers are needed especially for the Nigerian
girls and their families.

Program Resources
It is May already, half the year gone. I hope you are all spending time reading for the 2014
UMW Reading program. At our Spring meeting we had several books available, and if
you missed the meeting, you missed our reading awards for 2013. I have included a list at
the end of this article. Congratulations to all who participated, regardless the level. The
books chosen for inclusion in the reading program are always timely. So are the studies chosen for Mission u.
This year at Mission u we will studying about dealing with Disabilities, the story of the Roma people and our
spiritual study asks “How Goes It With Your Soul”, all recent news items. Remember, reading one of the
Mission u study books counts as 2 books toward your reading program certificate.
There are several interesting books new to the list for 2014 – including several timely topics – 100 Simple
Things You Can Do To Prevent Alzheimer’s and Age Related Memory Loss, or Please Look After
Mom and Year Of Plenty – One Suburban Family, Four Rules and 365 Days of Homegrown Adventure
in Pursuit of Christian Living, as well as the books listed on the Reading Program List between 2010
and 2013. All the reading program books can be purchased through the Mission Resource Center online at
www.umwmissionresources.org. They also may be available at your local library.

From the Vice President
Greetings to all,
Ladies, it was wonderful meeting with forty-eight of you at Marion for the Spring Leadership gathering.
Sixteen churches sent members. Thank you Anne Moudy and the ladies of Marion for making us all feel so
welcome. I have a sense that all in attendance that day felt that it was time well spent.
I recently spent four days in Louisville, Kentucky at Assembly with thousands of UMW members from around
the world learning the many ways that we can "Make It Happen". We who attended have tales to tell, some good,
some grumbling but all in all it was a good time. Partly because I chose to have a good time and more importantly
because I had two wonderful roommates who helped make the trip special, thank you Rae and Marilyn.
2018 Assembly will be in Columbus, Ohio. Think about it! Make it Happen!
I hope to see many of you there and before that at Mission u.
Safe Journey,
