Winter 2016 UMW District President Greetings and Happy New Year! It is a pleasure for me to serve as your President this year and I hope my one year term will be a great transition to our next President. This year will complete my tenure on the District level. Many of you know that I served on the Conference Mission Team as Chair of Nominations. Identifying, mentoring and nurturing of new leaders is an important issue if we are to continue to fulfill the purpose of United Methodist Women. I was born into Christ UMC and spent my teen and young adult life in Reveille UMC. My experience in these churches taught me the importance of an organized group of women and offered me the experience of leadership on the local level. When I moved to Mechanicsville, I changed to the Ashland District where I was mentored by these faithful women. I served as Secretary, Treasurer and while President was involved in the redistricting of Ashland. With the redistricting, my church, Lebanon and now Shady Grove- Hanover were absorbed into the Richmond District. Through my years with UM Women, I have met some incredible women of faith who understood the importance of nurturing future leaders. As we start this new year, the details of some of our events are not settled but we have dates and places. I want to thank the churches that have committed to hosting events and will strive to be clear as to expectations. Our next event will be the Hearts for Justice Tea hosted by Providence UMW in Chesterfield. This has always been a time of learning and thought provoking. I look forward to seeing a large number of you at this event. Your Mission team meets every other month on a Sunday afternoon. Our first meeting of 2016 is on February 7 th at 2:15 pm, hopefully at Reveille UMC. Although it is a business meeting, we welcome anyone to attend if they have an interest in our leadership decisions. Jean & I will be sharing one email for use of Richmond District, therefore please place in the subject line either Treasurer or President. This will help us identify and respond appropriately. Greetings and Happy New Year! It is a pleasure for me to serve as your President this year and I hope my one year term will be a great transition to our next President. UMW District Vice President

Welcome to 2016 as we begin studying together our Program Book, “Growing In Blessedness”, with all our UMW sisters. Last year we came to realize that we are to follow our Lord’s example to “welcome all” as His life exemplified. We realize that it takes more than talking about it….going out and living it with those of diversity, in all stages of life whether individually or groups. Changing and challenges are a threat. Yes, we meet changes with many emotions daily and how we accept to approach diversity makes us rethink some of our emotions. This year as we study, discuss and explore the meaning of blessedness from the Beatitudes of Jesus and other passages of the Bible and understand why they are crucial to us as disciples of Christ” (Introduction section p.1), may our prayers be to follow, venture out, opening ourselves to any possibilities that our studies may lead us to love more and grow in His likeness. We hope our programs this year of 2016 will help us all to continue ‘Growing in His Blessedness’. Feb. 4th 24th Annual UM Day at General Assembly Bon Air UMC 1645 Buford Rd 7:30AM-3:30PM Join us for this special day as we meet with our legislators and learn together what issues are being addressed, attend committee hearings and joint sessions at noon. UMW District Secretary Hi. My name really is Stuart Joerg (pronounced Yerg) and I "think" I am going to thoroughly enjoy being the District UMW Secretary this year. Surely I will get to know more of you and I'm looking forward to meeting new friends. I am a retired rehabilitation counselor after 30 years of state and federal service. I'm still employed in my 1st love field of church music as the Music Director at Huguenot UMC. Also, there is time to be President of the Huguenot UMW. There is also time to sing in a madrigal performing group, Cantus Cantore. Sometimes I even have time to cook and wash clothes! My hat rack is very full but I will do my very best to serve the needs of the District UMW.

UMW District Program Resources

Your new Program Resource Co-Chairman this year - Marilyn Bell

and Judy Gindhart. We are both members of Providence UMC (Richmond).

I, Marilyn, am an avid reader. My husband and I travel a lot and I read going up and down I-95. I was the top reader for the district for the past 2 years. There are so many interesting books out there. When I exhaust the program books in our church library, I go to Linda Porter and pick up books from her to read. This means that even if your church cannot afford to buy books that are on the program, you can still read. They are available from the district, via Linda Porter, or from your local library, or second-hand via Amazon.

I, Judy, am new to the Richmond area, and am willing to help out in any way possible. I would also encourage every UMW member to find a book (or two or three) that interests them. Read it and discuss it with others in your group.

Hope everyone is encouraging their readers to READ, READ, READ. There will be a few copies of the prayer calendars & program books at the Racial Justice meeting on February 13.

Let us know if we can help you in any way this year.

Blessings,

Marilyn and Judy

UMW Mission Coordinator for Education & Interpretation Happy New Year, Ladies! I am Barbara Tuttle, and I will attempt to replace Mary Jo Whipple as Secretary for Mission Education & Interpretation. (I know she's a hard act to follow, but I'm gonna try!) I was born at Duke when my father was in the Divinity School, and my mother taught home economics and social studies all over eastern North Carolina, where they served and I grew up. I am divorced with two grown daughters and one grandson, and I am retired from Chesterfield County Public Schools. I have been a member of Beulah UMC and UMW for 30 years, and in my unit, I have held positions as Secretary, Mission Education & Interpretation, Social Action, and President. I look forward to sharing with you the many ways we can answer the question you have probably heard from your members: "When I give to UMW, where does my money go?" Use the Prayer Calendar and Response in every meeting. Keep our missionaries and missions in front of not only our UMW members, but also our congregations: If you have a church newsletter, include an entry from the Prayer Calendar and a list of mission areas for prayer. In your church bulletin, have a "Missionary of the Week", one with an upcoming birthday, and include their e-mail address. What are your ideas? Keep me in your prayers, Barbara

UMW District Spiritual Growth Trouble to Triumph The Story of Esther saving the Jewish people with God’s help. I chose to write about Esther’s story because I admire her confidence in God and her love for the Jewish people. Esther 3:6 A man named Haman was the leader who was above all the princesses and servants of King Ahasuerus tried to destroy all the Jews in the kingdom. Esther 4:16-17 When queen Esther found out about this she sent a message to Mordecai requesting him to go gather all the Jews who were in Susa and fast with me. Neither eat nor drink for 3 days night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise and then I’ll go to the king which is against the law and if I perish I perish. So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Queen Esther had commanded him. Esther 7:2-3 On the second day of the fast King granted Queen Esther her wish to save the Jewish people from Haman’s plot. Queen Esther was in trouble and could have gotten killed because of her belief. She turned to God and also turned her people to him, Finding favor in him. That led to King Ahasuerus granting her request. As a result she was successful with God’s help over Haman. Some would argue that God was not involved in saving the Jews because the King favored Esther. Because she fasted for a specific need God answered her request. God answered her prayers through the kings actions not because of the kings understanding. Because he did not know she was a Jew Queen Esther believed that God would answer her request in a positive way that gave her the courage to go to the king without fear. Hilda Watson

UMW District Mission Coordinator, Social Action

Mary Jo Whipple

Happy New Year, my Sisters in Christ. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday and are ready to begin a new year in mission. To help in planning your programs this year, the Virginia Conference UMW’S Social Action Focus for 2016 is Economic Justice: Child Hunger. Other National focuses are on Maternal-Child Health, Climate Change, and Mass Incarceration, (more info on Mass Incarceration at the “Hearts for Justice Tea” – see flyer) all subjects which will give us much to consider and act upon. By working together, we can do much to relieve the suffering of many of those affected by these issues. As your new Mission Coordinator for Social Action, I will be learning my job as the days go on and will pass along information you need. If you need to contact me, I’m at (804)477-3914, e-mail [email protected].

UMW District Communication Coordinator Happy New Year sisters in Christ! I am the new Communications Coordinator for the Richmond District UMW. Just in case you don’t already know, The WORD is published four times during the year and includes lots of information provided by your Richmond District Officers that you will want to read for a fun and successful year. A paper copy of The WORD is mailed to each Unit president and an electronic copy is sent through e-mail distribution. Persons desiring to be on the e-mail distribution list should send a request to me at [email protected]. So if you haven’t provided your Unit Officer information yet, please hurry and send the form to Jessie Swann, your District President so you won’t miss the next issue. I look forward to serving the district and will work hard to rise to the level of service Gayle Turner & Joan Peterson provided for so many years. This is my first “WORD” publication, so please feel free to let me know what I may have left out, any errors you may find or changes you envision. Remember, communication is a two-way street. One important note: everyone should update your “favorites” on your internet provider for the conference UMW website as www.vaumw.com. The old site was .org. Information on “Faith, Hope & Love In Action” upcoming events, etc. are posted there for your reference. Another great site for resources is www.umwmissionresources.org As you receive this issue I will have begun compiling information for the spring edition so please let your District Leaders know of any articles or information you would like included for distribution throughout our district. The next deadline is April 1st – no fooling! Many blessings, Lloydette Diggs (Due to privacy issues, we do not allow The WORD distribution list to be used by UMW units or individual members for publicity purposes, and we do not release the data to individuals or groups outside the organization of the United Methodist Women!)

New 2015 UMW Membership (Census) Reporting Information

The census is the gathering of important information to the life of the organization. Each census is uniquely vital to giving us a total picture of where we are in communities throughout the nation. This year we want to make capturing membership information easier and faster via internet reporting. The link to the census web page should work on all internet browsers... If you are using this printed page to complete your census reporting on the internet instead of the active link on the email you received in October,

Please follow the link to open a new census web page: Type the link https://unitedmethodistwomen-public.sharepoint.com/ on your browser. Once the page opens, please follow directions on the screen and click on the highlighted link “UMW Membership Census 2015” to go to the actual census form. We attempted to make the form easy to fill out. Note that some fields must be completed. You will not be able to submit the form if necessary information is not provided. If some of required information was not entered, the field will be shown in pink.

Reporting is due by February 28, 2016.

NOTES: This is a count of your membership from January 1, 2015 to December

31, 2015.

You will need to know the total number of members your unit has lost in 2015 due

to death, transfer and other. These categories need not be broken down, just use

the total lost.

You will need the same information that you used for the old paper membership

forms to fill out this internet form. The only additional information you will need is

the Jurisdiction, which will be selected as the “Southeastern “.

Scroll down to the “District Name P-V” and click the inverted triangle to the right.

This will give you a drop down menu from which you will select “Richmond”.

A reminder email with an active link to this reporting will be sent to all 2015 Unit

Presidents or the 2016 Unit Presidents if your unit has submitted your list of 2016

officers.
