Q: How you homey? A: Life is good can't complain. Q: That's what up. You still in the restaurant business? A: No actually just sold it to focus on other business opportunities. Q: No doubt. Trying to focus more on music too? A: Definitely more music. I kind of wanna disappear from everything and just record for a month straight but life doesn't give you that opportunity ya know. Q: Yeah I feel the same way sometimes. How old were you when you first started rapping ? I met you when you was 16 and your bars were crazy even then. A: I was 15 lmao pretending to be 16 lmao I was in 7th grade the first time I remember putting together something that would be considered a song back then the equipment was a little more primitive. Q: Ha. No doubt. Do you feel like you've grown as an artist? If so, how? A: I think I've grown so much because the game changes, you have to adapt on the fly. When I was beginning it was a whole different facade I've seen more I've done more so as an artist I have more to offer as for content. Q: Cool. How would you describe your music in 3 words? A: Real intense raw. Q: It seems like the word real gets thrown around lightly sometimes. What is your definition of Real music? A: Real is what real is ...like I think it's authentic undeniable pure real is a stain that can't be washed out. Q: I feel you. So what do you think separates you from most other local rappers? A: I am the artist who can do any genre with any other artist and still me one of the dopest. I mean you have worked with me so you understand I am lethal within the first 8 bars. Alot of rappers these days most rappers these days don't possess that ability. Q: Yeah I know. What's one of your personal most memorable moments regarding music and hip hop? A: That's tough lol maybe opening up for Lil flip in 05 in binghamton ny I was a young kid just trying to leave my mark on guys who were established at the time ...not so much now though lol Q: No doubt. So what's next for you in 2013? Working on any projects? A: Mixtape coming soon Peruvian flake dropping this summer and Pieces of a Dream in late 2013 working on the new La Extort project new video coming in two weeks ...yea Im working infact I just left the studio at 5am lol. Q: Ok ok! Where can we hear some of your music? A: Checkout cherp on soundcloud and reverbnation. Q: Aight. What's one of your "must hear" songs if you had one shot? A: It's million dollar girl no question something for every body. Q: Cool. Aight we will check it out. So would you like to give any shout outs? A: Yea everyone who supports me my family cousin g sister cuda dee Strickland la extort jeddah, Chris Garcia, kg Willie Henry and my sons Zavier jr and damon last but not least God nothing is possible with out him. Where are you from? I was born and raised in Berkeley, California. Just over the San Francisco Bay. What does Isis mean? Well, let me explain in detail. I had an epiphany in July of 2011. It was during a period where I was finding myself I wanted a name synonymous with my voice in poetry; soft is the best word to describe my persona. I also looked at myself as a Goddess, a Queen, which we are and Isis the Egyptian goddess came to mind. And thus, I.S.I.S The Goddess of Poetry was born. Isis is my pseudonym and stands for I Speak In Softness.

What type of artist are you? I am a poetess and soft spoken word artist who prides herself in promoting love, peace, and unity through poetry.

What inspires you to write? For the most part, my past and overcoming many tragedies inspired my many emotional pieces of work. However, as I grow in my craft I find so much inspiration from my sisters and brothers in the art, such as you. Like when I read your poetry; it would spark a fire from deep within that would open my mind to new and broader subjects.

Page 13: Word of Mouthz Issue #4

13

Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life? I have to say that my Aunt Rebecca has been my biggest inspiration. She has gone through so much pain, tragedy, and loss, and she still manages to be strong for her family. She is the family monarch, a great teacher, and more of a mom to me than anything. Have had any live performances lately? Well, I’ve been on a sabbatical for a few months; to regroup. However, I’m beginning to perform again and recently performed at the Poetry, Tea, and Coffee Open Mic Night here in Las Vegas. I also have an upcoming performance on April 4th at a Candle Light Vigil for the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in remembrance of his assassination. Who are some other artist you have worked with? I have been so blessed to be able to work with some phenomenal artists. Just to name a few, Charles Heavens Blade, Martin Writer’s Poet Pounds, Sexxy Love, Paradise, and recently a collaboration with the Queens and Kings of Club Poet Royals Court founded by Author Kesha Finesse Murphy. They are amazing poets and I’m so grateful to be apart of such memorable collaborations.

Where can we find your poetry and music? You can find my current works of poetry and music at www.isisofpoetry.com or www.reverbnation.com/isisthegoddessofpoetry. I am also on YouTube @ isisofpoetry and my books may be purchased on my website, Amazon.com ,or Barnes&Noble.com. How many books do you have published? I currently have 3 books of self-published poetry. I have one new book coming out entitled “The Fallen Rose”, which I have been working on since last year. It is planned to be released in May 2013. Anything else you would like to add? Yes. I am also working on a childrens series book of poetry. This is a big project and I anticipate its limited edition mini-book will be released in the summer of 2013. I will besubmitting it to Kickstart.com to raise funds for this project. It’s titled “Little Poets Dream Big”, so keep looking out for more details. INTERVIEWED BY APRIL C

What’s good my man? Just did a few tracks with you. Seeming like you came out of nowhere. Ha. How long you been recording music? Well, I've been doing this for almost 15 years. I put the mic down for about 5 years. Around May or June of last year I decided to pick it back up and its been on from there. That’s what’s up. Cause I def see the talent. Glad you got back into it. Are you down with any crew or label right now? No. Just myself, Shout out to Rome Clientel. I've been in the lab with him just conversating about ways to expand and get out there. But other than getting good features from other good mc's, such as yourself, Alycat, Bang, The General, Kid Vishis, Fyne-P, It's just me, doing what I love to do. Thats what up. I went in the lab with ROME and HOSTILE one time just to chill, and I learned a lot. I felt like he was like a Young Dr. Dre. Ha. Perfection. But anyway, how do you feel like you will separate yourself from other artists from Elmira, NY? Well I wouldn't say I’m trying to separate myself from anybody, I'm just trying to make good music that will catch peoples ears and make them say "who the hell is that? He’s nice!" No doubt. Who are your main influences? And who would you compare yourself to in the industry? Shit, there is soo many influences I can't name them all. But that whole 90's East Coast movement, mixed in with a little Dre, 2Pac Exzibit, Scarface. Man I could go on forever! But as far as who I sound like I don't really know, I’ve never really thought about it. I'm Hoping To sound like H.A.T.E. and make that a nationally known name. Cool. So what’s the story about the name H.A.T.E.? Well back in the day I used to snap on people all the time, just because I had a real bad temper. So my peoples started saying "Damn Hate, calm down." So that carried over to be my nickname, which became my rap name, which stands for (Hot As The Equator) Ha. Ok....So whats your plans for 2013 regarding music? Shit, just keep grinding my man. Hopefully get heard, get out there, get signed, just keep working. My hopes are for me to blow to the point I don’t have to work anymore I can just work at what I love to do, which is make music homie. I hear that. If you had one song to let a record executive to hear, what would it be? And why? Man, it would probably be My Life Ft. Alycat. The Beat is hard, The Hook is hard and we both go in with the verses yeah. that track is tough. you went in...before we go let the world peep a 8 bar verse of some pure fire of whatever you like. Check me out on soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/#matt-demott. Also on Twitter @hate_607. You can also Reverb Nation @hate607 and also on facebook @Hate. INTERVIEWED BY JARELL MCARTHUR
