Well, here it is, our 100th issue of our weekly magazine, Word on the Street. Sadly, there aren’t enough column inches to be nostalgic because as always we have a lot of great news to report.

B.G.A. + B.B.C. = N.E.W.S.BBC School Report, report.A huge well done to our team of Student Reporters; Azara, Ciaran, Sumaya, Theo and Theo, who scripted, performed and recorded Bethnal Green’s very first School Report for the BBC last week. As part of an annual project run by the BBC our students were tasked with creating their very own video report for the BBC News website. Working to a tight deadline, our roving reporters had just 3 three hours to work as a team, write and record their segment and publish it online.

Focusing on our current reading project and our Read Around the World challenge, Azara pretended to be reporting live from Salt Lake City in America (our current location), only to reveal that was still in fact at school! 2009 - Students spread a message of hope in support of educational charity, PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools).

2008 - the fantastic artwork from our annual Artbeat project run by our community partners Allen & Overy has regularly featured in our newsletter and will itself be celebrating 10 years of creativity in 2013.

Feb 12 - Students meet with Labour leader, Ed Miliband to discuss community safety as part of the CitySafe project and the Living Wage campaign.

May 09 - Our !rst of many street parties is in full swing as students and staff join forces to perform a Bollywood dance routine.

2008 - Bridges to Africa sponsored walk across all the bridges along the Thames.

Oct 11 - Pretty in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Day.

Oct 11 - Who knew First Aid could be such fun!

July 09 - Apparently this is a science lesson and the students are dressed as plant cells but I had to check!

Nov 07 - Students meet with the BSF architects to help design our new school.

March 09 - Students don their overalls, gloves and masks for a CSI-style day of forensic investigation.

May 08 - Ms. Dippenaar and Ms. Blair shiver their timbers at our pirate-themed, Year 6 taster day.

July 11 - Balloon powered vehicle racing at our Big Stem Wind Up challenge.

July 11 - Prince Charles visits Bethnal Green.

Nov 11 - Students on parade at the Lord Mayor’s Show.

April 08 - Mr. William’s Year 7 students build their own raft and set sail.

Every week our KS3 and KS4 Student Councils meet to discuss key issues brought forward by students, award nominations and to make decisions based on feedback such as our recent uniform consultation. If you have any comments, concerns or ideas, please let your Student Council representative know.

During this week’s meeting, Azara, Kaya, Mustafa, Moshina, Nqbile, Peace, Tahmina and Theo met to discuss and act upon the following items:

Discussion Points from last week:

• Students have spoken with Mr. Warmann and the P.E. Department and have agreed to support the Sport Relief Mile and advertise it during assemblies.

This Week:

• Proposal for Student Councils to be divided into three separate Committees; Learning, Extra-Curricular and Social.

• Student Council members will be recruiting volunteers to join the three new committees and will meet on Wednesday after school to plan the next steps.

• Points to feedback in assemblies(Sport Relief Mile, early exam entry, aspirational targets)

Throughout the day on Friday, students and staff rose to the challenge once again by completing laps of their very own Sport Relief Mile running track, mapped out around the school site.

It was fantastic to see so many of our students giving up their time before school, during both break and lunch, and after school to complete the 5 laps of our track required to clock up their Sport Relief mile.

Working together, we covered more than 400 miles! That’s the equivalent of running from our school to Edinburgh! We’re still counting the 50 pence pieces but fingers crossed we will have raised as many pounds as miles run!

This is a great tutor time activity. How many words can you make from the letters in the wheel? The only rule is, each word must use the centre letter. Aim for 20 words and there is at least one, 9 letter word to be found!
