thought for the month

3

From the Presbytery During the month of May the Church prays for an outpouring of God’s Spirit upon our world. With so many nations in turmoil or civil war; with the menace of international terrorist activity; and with the nuclear threat hanging over the world from Iran and North Korea, we might say that the world desperately needs God’s Spirit of love and peace at this time. And how much God wishes to share his Spirit with our world! The gift of the Holy Spirit is for each one of us if only we would ask. ‘Who among you,’ said Jesus, ‘would give a stone to a child when asked for bread?’ And then he added: ‘How much more your Father in heaven will give his Spirit to those who ask.’ Towards the end of this month we celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples. Let’s make the month of May special. Let’s ask our Father in heaven for the gift of his Spirit for ourselves and for our world. Lord, fill our hearts with the gift of your Spirit. Fill our world with your Spirit of peace, forgiveness, generosity and understanding. Come, Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Amen.

Easter lilies A big thank you to everyone who made donations towards the purchase of the Easter lilies used in the decoration of St Peter’s for this very special festival. Thanks must also go

to Shirley Smalley and the team of flower arrangers who worked to create a spectacular display.

Bluebell Walk

This year’s Bluebell Walk has been cancelled due to the sudden and very sad death of John Haimes of Yew Tree Farm.

The family is sure that everyone will understand the reason for this decision.

Ready, steady, go… Ann Wiseman is on her marks to join in the Cancer

Research Race for Life at Stratford Racecourse on the evening of June 27. Ann, who completed treatment for breast cancer last June, will be taking part along with her cousin and asks if anyone would like to sponsor her to go online to www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/annwiseman138 or call her on 01789 205045. Ann’s aims are modest. She’lI be in the 5k event and is not bothered how long it takes her. One thing is sure, she won’t be running, but she’d like to raise at least £50 for this worthy cause.

Speeding, what speeding? It’s interesting to note the eight targeted speed checks carried out on Alcester Road monitored 214 vehicles passing through with not one contravening the speed limit!

Betty Pile Sid and Betty Pile and family have asked us to pass on their thanks to everyone for all the help, kindness and get well cards, flowers – and also visitors – following Betty’s recent accident. She’s recovering slowly and hopes soon to be out and about again – and ready to resume deliveries of the magazine!

Box office Trish Phillips reports that ticket sales are going well for the Wagen Trust’s series of fund raising concerts – Celebrations and Jubilations – scheduled for next month and advises that concert goers book early to avoid disappointment. Use the booking form from last month’s magazine or contact Trish (01564 793114).

Time for tea Wootton Wawen WI would like to welcome you to ‘Tea at the Ritz’ in the village hall on Saturday May l9 from 3pm onwards. There will be a charge of £3 to include tea and cakes – considerably cheaper than the real thing!

organisations Baton charge - by bus

Johnson's X20 driver is in for a surprise on Friday May 4. A team of WI members from the village plan to board at the Wootton Hall stop carrying a special WI baton in an event mirroring the main

Olympic Torch relay. The baton, decked out in the national federation’s familiar green and white livery, is en route round the country as part of the WI’s contribution to London 2012’s Olympic celebrations. Wootton receives it on May 2 and is committed to its safe keeping for 48 hours before handing it on to representatives of Bearley WI at the mobile cafe lay-by on the A3400. By the time the baton leaves the Warwickshire Federation area it will have passed between more than 100 local branches, including Stratford, where its progress will be by river. Wootton WI treasurer Beatrice Townsend, who will be in the bearer party with secretary Sally Atkinson and president Shirley Davies said: "There could be more than a dozen of us on the trip. We have cars standing by, just in case the bus is full. But those of us who qualify will have bus passes at the ready!"

Allotments news At the 31st annual meeting, retiring chairman Les Whiteman reminded members of the many improvements made to the site since he took over in January 2007 – including the felling and pruning of trees overhanging the road, re-organising the water system and building the large green re-cycling bins. The treasurer reported a healthy bank balance. The committee was re-elected and Peter Cornford was unanimously voted chairman. Following the meeting Dr Laurence Trueman of Worcester University spoke on The Health Benefits of Fruit and Veg, with particular reference to growing your own. He delivered an amusing, informative, passionate and thought - provoking talk which was received with great enthusiasm. He would have talked until midnight if we weren’t on a time limit! Hopefully he will return next year. There are now plots available for immediate occupation. Contact Liz Major (01564 792243) for details.

Henley Society A visit to the Needle Museum at Redditch and Bordesley Abbey is planned for Thursday May 31, leaving at 2pm at a cost of £6 per head. To book or for further information please contact Arthur Gennard (01564 794209).

community Amir's empire? Wootton's much valued Post Office has spawned a new business for sub-postmaster Amir Malik. Less than three years after he took over here, Amir has added a similar enterprise - 10 miles away at Cheswick Green - to his portfolio and another six to his 50-hour working week. With an extra customer base of some 3000, Amir says he was chosen to take on the challenge mainly as a re-sult of his clients in this village. "People in Wootton Wawen have sup-ported the business so well, my record went a long way towards persuading Post Office Ltd I was the right person for the second job," said Amir. "I think it unusual for anyone to have two sub-post offices like this." While Amir trains up a relative to take on the day-to-day counter duties at his new business which, as here, com-bines a general grocery store, plus an off-licence and gifts, he keeps in touch with his brother Asif running Wootton. He urges customers to let him know on his return visits if there are improvements they would like to see. Now offering services such as travel money, an ATM and lottery tickets in his new shop, does Amir, who needs to find time for wife and family, see his empire expanding into more branches? "Not at the moment," he smiles. "I want to make sure these two go OK before thinking of that!” BP

Snap! Keen photographer Mike Crowther will be out and about the village during Wootton’s Diamond Jubilee celebra-tions, camera at the ready to record the celebrations for posterity. Former Thames Valley police officer, Mike, who lives in Pound Field with his partner Hazel, then plans to download the stills images, edit them and pro-duce a souvenir CD. He’s also plan-ning a slide show at the Village Hall later in the year re-living Wootton’s Jubilee celebrations. Watch this space! Mike describes himself as ‘a happy amateur’ and resumed his interest in photography when made redundant from his civilian role with Warwickshire Police. He used his time to go to col-lege and take a City and Guilds course in digital photography. But that’s not all. Mike also took a course in graphic design and it’s his skills that have gone into producing this month’s Diamond Jubilee supple-ment in the centre of the magazine. He admits the project was ‘a steep learning curve’, but he’s enjoyed the challenge.

features Noah's Ark - 21st century style? After five years of painstaking design, experiment and modelling, Wootton boffin Roger Richardson has revealed the details of the invention he hopes will be the solution to flood damage to homes across Britain. Since the village's last extensive flooding in 2007, Roger has spent £7,000 of his pension to perfect and apply for a patent on the system which, he says, should save families in flood-prone areas the cost of disruption and rising insurance premiums. The retired police officer from Pennyford Lane first spoke of a “simple, easily installed and stored" brainchild he was working on in this magazine in July 2010. Now, with his ‘intellectual property’ fully protected in the UK, he has released more information as he starts a quest to find companies interested in becoming licensees of the device. He believes panels up to 5-ft high in either extruded aluminium or UPVC, locking into each other and into a pre-configured below-ground anchorage, is capable of being set up "in minutes" by a lone householder and quickly dismantled as soon as a flood alert is over. His hand-crafted model demonstrates a stockade-like rigid structure, protecting a church. "Although the application is primarily for homes, it

seemed appropriate to use the church because the idea has grown out of my going to the vicar to offer my spare beds to anyone whose house was underwater after the 2007 flooding," said Roger. While he hopes Wootton, after various improvements, will now avoid future flooding, he says the concept should be a vital component of flood defence anywhere, being lighter weight and better sealed than either sandbags or some river barriers, and customised to each property, even allowing for undulating ground. He concedes cost will be a factor in take-up of the flat-packs he envisages. "Householders could invest in just sufficient units to deflect water from a particular direction, but after the initial outlay, even if it is several thousand pounds, there is no maintenance or running cost." said Roger. "It has to be a better option than the disruption and rising premiums that can follow £100,000-plus insurance claims typically revealed in a survey I carried out." BP

Under new management New jobs and a new management structure have come with the change in licensee at the Bulls Head. The man in charge, Richard Saul, says he is

already employing 13 staff, seven of them part-timers - some students - and several from our community."I've been pleased to take on local people," says Richard. With a change in brewery policy, Marstons have dropped the previous tenancy arrangements with the house now managed through Total Pub Solutions. TPS, says Richard, guarantees that if any manager is absent from any of the 72 pubs for which they have responsibility a replacement is found same day. It appears the brewery is not prepared to see the Bull closed again. Richard lives on the premises, aims to be "usually available" outside noon-11 pm core trading hours and wants the Bull to appeal to villagers and visitors, with bar meals midweek and the restaurant opening at week-ends. The school run parking facility will continue, with plans to offer a mid-afternoon cuppa to parents and carers – plus a birthday party option. The new boss also expects to develop a trade in coach parties and to produce leaflets explaining the history of the reputedly 14th century building to new customers.

And when choosing from a menu customised from Richard's previous assistant manager's role at Henley's White Swan and as restaurant and bar manager at Studley Castle, do not expect a re-heat job. "There's no microwave," says Richard, age 42. “Everything is freshly cooked to order.” BP

Open book The new Henley Community Library is now up and running in The Old Schoolroom, Henley Methodist Church. Opening hours are Tuesday and Friday 9am to 7pm Saturday - 9am to 1pm

Fit for a Queen When St Peter’s choir member Linda Gilbert was inspired to set some very special words to music in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, she decided to send copies to the Queen and was ‘absolutely flippin’ thrilled to bits’ to receive a response! A ‘lovely’ letter from a lady in waiting said how pleased Her Majesty was to receive Linda’s lyrics - set to the music of They’re Changing Guard at Buckingham Palace, An English Country Garden and, finally, the National Anthem – and to learn a little about Wootton and the Saxon Sanctuary. Also enclosed with the letter was a large card featuring six photographs of the Queen marking the decades of her reign. It now has pride of place at Linda and husband, Dave’s home in Acklam Gardens. So far only a selected few have read the lyrics. They are being kept strictly under wraps and will be premiered at the joint choir and youth club concert on June 9. Linda used to write poetry and songs for colleagues who were leaving the Coventry store where she worked until worsening arthritis forced her to retire. Now she enjoys her ‘scribbling’ and Dave re-writes her words out in ‘best’. Tickets for the concert - £7.50 to include fish and chip supper – are available from Hilary Thomas (01564 793217).

Musical youth Village youngsters have their own version of Gareth Malone, of the successful TV series, The Choir, as they work towards contributing to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Jonathan Lucas, county youth worker, musician and school governor, has taken on the task of encouraging song from the voices of Wootton Youth Club in preparation for a public performance with St Peter's Church choir at the Village Hall on Saturday June 9. Half a dozen of the girls are already rehearsing, two preparing solos or duets, another to be joint compere.

community "I'm still working on the lads - they're a bit reluctant to commit," says Jonathan, who played keyboard for the recent primary school choir performance on Mothering Sunday (see April's cover photo) and, inspired by helping the school's enthusiastic music teacher Beth Mitchell, is now being taught organ playing by Jayne Llewellyn at Henley parish church. Youth club leader Sue Griffin views the initiative as an extra dimension to the usual activities of table games and IPod music in winter and cricket, tennis, hockey and rounders in the summer. The 20-member youth club, which meets on Tuesdays in term time at the Village Hall and currently has a waiting list, recruits mainly from pupils in their last year at primary school who, through club activities, want to stay in touch with classmates after moving to secondary education.

Time to vote Local elections take place on Thursday May 3, with three candidates looking to represent Henley (which includes Wootton Wawen) on Stratford District Council. They are current representative Stephen Thirlwell (Conservative), Tracy Doherty (Labour) and Diane Walden (Liberal Democrat). Our polling station is the Village Hall, which will be open from 7am-10pm for residents to cast their votes.

Parish Council update The April parish council meeting was held at the Sun Lounge, Wootton Hall by kind permission of the Allen Organisation. There will be no Parish Council election this year. Chairman John Lawton, vice chairman Phil Holt, Peter Emberson and Derek Hill have been returned as elected and two more will be co-opted at a later date to complete the required number of six parish councillors. In May the council is bidding farewell to Cllr Shirley Davies who will be retiring after 40 years on the council - and 26 as chairman. It is extremely grateful to Shirley for all her hard work and commitment over the years. Following a recent appeal, the inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has dismissed appeals made by Mr Guy Evans and Qualitas Consultants against the decisions by Stratford District Council with regard to housing development at Field Farm. The Parish Plan continues to be discussed at every meeting, with special emphasis being placed on affordable housing and businesses in Wootton Wawen. The Parish Council annual meeting will be held at the Village Hall at 6.30pm on Monday May 28, to be followed by an open council meeting. Everyone is welcome at all meetings. Ginnie Pratt, clerk.

community Racing - real and virtual Local racing fans have two chances to place their bets in the first week of May, with the annual trip to Cheltenham for the Hunter Chase on Wednesday May 2. On Saturday May 5 Wootton Social Club runs its springtime Race Night, when members and visitors back their fancied runners. Become a race sponsor for £10.

Hospice update The Shakespeare Hospice has been awarded Touch FM’s Pride of Stratford Green Business of the Year Award for its Recycling Shop at Burton Farm. Since opening, seven years ago, more than £1 million has been raised. The hospice has now opened a furniture store at Unit 1, Avenue Farm, just off the Birmingham Road, Stratford. The store will be happy to collect donations of good quality, saleable furniture. For more information contact www.theshakespearehospice.org.uk or call 01789 266852.

Community service The next Warwickshire Police Surgery is on May 16 at Wootton Village Hall car park, between 2pm–2.30pm, when residents can discuss issues or problems with the local policing team.

Parish Assembly Parish Council chairman John Lawton - who also chaired the meeting - reported that localism was a growing feature and the need to contribute to community funding had led to a 6% precept rise. He thanked fellow members and clerk for their constant support and commented that, for the future, avoiding change was no longer an option. County Councillor Mike Perry stated that Warwickshire had saved £33 million without services suffering unduly. Public health, road maintenance and rural broadband were high priorities. District councillors Stephen Thirlwell and George Matheou said that savings had been achieved by cost cutting and sharing services. Housing was, and would remain, a top priority. It was hoped to set up a local enterprise board. Reports were received from village organisations, including the Allotment Association, the Village Hall Committee, the Wagen Trust, the Women’s Institute, the Pre-School, Primary School, and the Youth Club. The Footpaths Group mourned the loss of walk leader Martin Corrigan. Finally, an update was received from the newly opened Henley Community Library. Full minutes and reports are available from the Parish Office. JAA
