Seeing WellDuring my almost 26 year career in Oph-

thalmology I have examined the occasionalpatients that are 20/20 thinking that their vi-sion is not good enough and at the other end ofthe spectrum there are patients with 20/100feeling that they see perfectly well. Of impor-tance is what one’s daily life is all about. Ofcourse if your occupation is all about drivingand assessing situations quickly good visionis important for navigating and for the safetyof those around you. Our computer orientedsociety puts unusual demands on vision. Weseem to be constantly using our eyes whilelooking at smartphones, laptops and assortedother electronic devices. It is very importantto have proper correction to minimize eye-strain when working hours in front of thecomputer. I have encountered more dry eyecomplaints in the past few years than everbefore. Using all the electronic devices causesus to stare, thereby decreasing the frequencyof blinking. This in turn causes excessivedrying of our eyes. Remember a neat littletrick- 20-20-20. Every 20 minutes look at anobject 20 feet away and blink 20 times. Thiswill help alleviate some of the burning, tran-sient blurring and sandy sensation that resultsfrom dry eyes. For those that are casual

readers it may not be necessary to need “per-fect” vision. During exams with my patients Idiscuss what you do daily, what needs youmay have for reading, driving, watching TV,sports, etc. Seeing well may be different for usall, but what isn’t different is making sure youget annual comprehensive eye exams withyour Ophthalmologist. It’s important to bechecked for glaucoma, macula degeneration, cataracts, dry eyes, and diabetic retinopathy.Making sure the eye is healthy helps maintaingood vision. No pair of spectacles, contactlenses, or laser vision correction can help aperson who has already lost vision from glau-coma or diabetes get it back. I advise all mypatients that have had some sort of refractiveprocedure to not disappear after they canfinally read the 20/20 line without correction.Glaucoma is real. It is a silent blinder. Thismeans that it generally doesn’t hurt, doesn’tcause blurry vision until the end. Early detec-tion is key to living a well-sighted life. Diabet-ics should all have annual retinal dilated ex-ams even if everything seems okay. And re-member, some diseases such as Glaucoma runin families. African Americans are at higherrisk for Glaucoma with a younger age ofonset. Again it is ALL about early detection. As we cruise through 2013 make sure to get acomprehensive eye exam.

Creativity Coming to SunnysideArts, music and recreation are coming to the streets of Sunnyside this summer. The Sunnyside Shines

Business Improvement District will present its fourth annual street event, renamed Sunnyside Summer.Sunnyside Summer Strolls brings together community members, local businesses and exciting performers andinstitutions for three days of fun under the Sunnyside arch. The street is transformed into a new, temporarypublic space with tables and chairs set up, as well as scheduled activities. Each day is free and open to thepublic, while having a distinct program:

Children’s Arts & Crafts Fair: July 27Children ages 4 and up are invited to participate

in hands-on craft making during the Children’sArts and Crafts Fair. The day will also feature facepainting, games and music. Two demo classes of“Music for Aardvarks” will take place for toddlers, the first at 1pm and the second at 3pm.

Bix Beiderbecke Memorial JazzConcert: August 3

Sunnyside Shines is pleased to work with the BixBeiderbecke Sunnyside Memorial Committee topresent this year’s Bix Beiderbecke Memorial JazzConcert. Bix Beiderbecke was an influential 1920sjazz musician who lived his final days in Sunnyside.

This year’s concert features a vintage 1920stheme and an exciting lineup of jazz musiciansincluding MAC and Mike – the Antique DJs,Svetlana and the Delancey Five, the SunnysideDrum Corps, Smidge Malone & Matt Dallow andthe Sunnyside Wolverines. The Big Apple LindyHoppers will offer a free Lindy Hop lesson at1:30pm. A dance floor will be set up in the street, and the day will include a free photo booth and a1920s costume contest at 3:45pm.

Arts and Performance: August 10The final day of Sunnyside Summer Strolls will

feature a participatory art project with the QueensMuseum of Art, a display of Sunnyside maps fromthe La Guardia Community College art depart-ment, a free yoga class, a performance fromSunnyside Ballet Studio, an a cappella perfor-

mance and business giveaways. To complement the art and performances on this day, we will roll out a pallet’s worth of sod in the street

to transform 46th Street into a temporary park for the day. Picnics are welcome!Sunnyside Summer Strolls takes place on 46th Street between Greenpoint Avenue and Queens Boulevard,

under the Sunnyside arch and adjacent to the 46th Street/Bliss Street station on the 7 line. The event is a partof the New York City Department of Transportation’s Weekend Walks program, which creates temporarypedestrian streets at 23 sites in all five boroughs.

Czarinna Andres, owner of Bing’s Hallmark said: “Our participation last year was very enjoyable and agreat way for us to connect to the community. This year, we are planning to have our own table at the Children’sArts and Crafts Fair and are looking forward to what’s sure to be a huge turnout that everyone will enjoy!”

“I am deeply troubled to learn of the New York City HousingAuthority’s inefficacies and find their response time to the needs of thiscommunity appalling,” said Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “Theresidents of the Woodside Houses deserve better. New Yorkers deservebetter. It is indefensible that some of these repair tickets are taking aslong as six years to resolve. Especially when you consider the hazardousconditions that many of these families have to put up with. It is timeNYCHA be held accountable for the deplorable conditions under whichso many New Yorkers are living in and start treating them with dignityand respect.”

A recent report found that several residents from the WoodsideHouses have been waiting over six years to have issues within theirapartments addressed. According to the report the Woodside Houses hasnumerous cases where residents are facing unresolved repair requeststhat date back to 2007.

In 2011, CM Van Bramer was able to get NYCHA to make repairsfor Tina Ferguson who has lived in the Woodside Houses her entire life. After the Council Member’s office intervened, NYCHA was able tomake repairs to Ms. Ferguson’s ceiling, which was leaking through holesand led to the spreading of mold throughout the bathroom. Although theholes in her ceilings were covered and the mold was cleared two yearsago the problem has returned. Ms. Ferguson claims the mold hasreturned and the leak still persists because of substandard work on thebehalf of NYCHA. She also has an infestation of mice and insectsthroughout her apartment.

After the press conference CM Van Bramer and CongressmanCrowley visited Ms. Ferguson’s apartment (photo link below). While they toured the residence they were able to confirm that theleaks in the ceiling still exist as well as witness the spread of moldthroughout the bathroom.
