NEWS FROM THE 7th DISTRICTDear Friends:

As I’m sure you are aware, the Constitution requires an accurate count of all people living in the UnitedStates every ten years. This count lets us know how we need to distribute important resources to buildhospitals, job training centers, schools and senior centers, and it determines how much representation NewYork will have in the U.S. Congress.

Filling out the census form is easy. This year’s form has only ten questions. Please take ten minutes tofill it out and you have done your duty. The form will ask you how many people live in your household, howold they are and other simple information that you already know.

Please know that the information you put on this form is safe. Your answers cannot be used against youby any government agency or court, your identifying information will never be published and yourconfidentiality is protected by federal law.

The safety of your personal information is of utmost importance, but scam artists are already at work tryingto trick you. Always remember that the official census form does not ask for your Social Security number orfinancial information. It is not sent via email and does not ask you to fill out anything online. All mailings willbe clearly marked as coming from the U.S. Census Bureau and as official business of the United States.

If a census worker comes to your home, they will carry an official government badge with their name. Youmay also ask them for a picture ID. If you have any doubts about a worker or a census mailing being legitimate, you can call the regional census center at (212) 971-8810 to check.

The 2010 Census is important, but it is also easy and safe. So please, fill out and return your census form, and help spread the word to your friends and family to do the same. Together, we can make sure that everyNew Yorker gets counted, so that the needs of our community can be fully met.

DA BROWN NOW LONGEST SERVING D.A.IN QUEENS COUNTY HISTORY

6,874. That’s how many daysDistrict Attorney Brown had to servein order to surpass the record set byDistrict Attorney Benjamin W.Downing (who served from January1, 1865, to October 26, 1883) andbecome the longest-serving districtattorney in Queens County history.

Attached is a photo of DistrictAttorney Brown surrounded by staffthat surprised him with a cake inacknowledgment of the historicmilestone.

Governor Mario M. Cuomo ap-pointed District Attorney BrownDistrict Attorney of Queens County,on June 1, 1991. He was elected to afull four-year term as District Attor-ney at the general election held inNovember 1991 and was re-electedat the 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007general elections. Under DistrictAttorney Brown’s leadership, theQueens County District Attorney’sOffice has attained an extraordinaryreputation as one of the finest pros-

ecutors’ offices in New York State.“As proud as I am on a personal

and professional level, this historicachievement could not have beenpossible without the overwhelmingsupport and confidence of the peopleof Queens County who have con-tinually elected me as their chief lawenforcement officer since 1991,”said District Attorney Brown, not-ing that the record-setting accom-plishment coincides with him enter-ing his 50th year in public service.

Upon learning that the PublicService Commission voted todayto seek a $1M fine from Con Edisonfor its slow and ineffective responseto a gas leak that lead to a deadlyexplosion in Floral Park, Queens,Assemblyman Michael Gianaris(D-Queens) stated:”Three youngboys will grow up without a motherbecause of Con Ed’s negligence. While I’m glad to see the PSCfinally taking steps to hold Con Edaccountable, significant reformsare needed before New Yorkerscan live without fear of stray volt-age, blackouts and explosions.”

Ghanwatti Boodram, a forty-year-old wife and mother of three, died April 24, 2009, when her houseexploded. Assemblyman Gianarisis the leading advocate for reformof Con Edison and has workedtirelessly to advance legislation re-quiring the monopoly to be moreaccountable to its customers. Fol-lowing the 2006 blackout in Queensthat left over 170,000 residents andbusinesses without power, Assem-blyman Gianaris headed a taskforce dedicated to reforming ConEdison that resulted in dozens ofreform recommendations.

COUNCIL OVERWHELMINGLY PASSES JIMMY VAN BRAMER’S LEGISLATION TOMAKE IT EASIER FOR STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR LIBRARY CARDS

Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer Passed Legislation Today that Requires the Department of Education(DOE) to Supply Students with Library Card Applications and Information on How to Apply for Library Cards.

ADVOCATES FOR ADDITIONALFUNDS FOR QUEENS LIBRARY

In late February 2010, Assemblymember Michael DenDekker (D-Jackson Heights)met with Mr. Thomas W. Galante, the Chief Executive Officer of the Queens Library,to advocate for additional funds for the Queens Library.

“I’m a huge supporter of libraries in general, and of the Queens Library, in particular. As a Queens native, I frequently made use of my local library when I was growing up andgoing to school,” Assemblymember DenDekker said. “In this strained economy, the QueensLibrary is an important resource for job seekers and those who are re-training for a newcareer. In addition to its regular collections, it has internet access and other resourcesthat are of assistance to those who are looking for a job.”

With some 61 community libraries in its system, the Queens Library is one of the oldestand most historic libraries in the nation. In 2007, it was the No. 1 library system in the countryby circulation, loaning 21 million books, DVD’s, CD’s, and other items. In 2009, it wasnamed “Library of the Year” by the prestigious Library Journal.

“At a time when many of our libraries are facing financial shortfalls because of budgetarylimitations,” added Assemblymember DenDekker, “it’s more important than ever that ourlibraries have sufficient funding to meet the needs of the communities they serve. I’ve beenimpressed by Mr. Galante’s leadership, and the hard work shown by his staff and librarians,in keeping the Queens Library the finest of its kind in the nation.”

With broad support from the New YorkPublic Library, Queens Public Library, and Brooklyn Public Library, CouncilMember Jimmy Van Bramer, who haslong been an advocate of public libraries, introduced the Library Card Act in hissecond month in office. The bill will re-quire the DOE to supply library card ap-plications and information on how to ap-ply for library cards to students enteringinto kindergarten, sixth grade, and ninthgrade. The bill will also require that stu-

dents are supplied applications when trans-ferring into a new school.

Though many students are already en-rolled in library memberships, many stillare not. In Queens alone, approximately45% or 113,021 school aged children donot have cards; while in Brooklyn, about33% or 196,284 school aged children donot have them. A similar number of chil-dren lack library cards in the areas servedby the New York Public Library. This billaims to reduce that number by using the

expansive reach of the public school sys-tem to make it easier for children to applyfor library cards by supplying them withlibrary card applications.

“I am thankful for the support this billhas had from Speaker Quinn, EducationCommittee Chair Robert Jackson, and allthe members that sponsored the bill, aswell as the three library systems,” saidCouncil Member Jimmy Van Bramer.“Libraries are an integral part of our edu-cation system. It is undeniable that chil-dren who read more and use their librariesdo better academically. As an educationalresource, it is important to use every op-portunity to bring libraries and studentstogether. This bill will do just this.”

“A library card can be the ticket toopening up children’s minds and sparking

their imaginations. In so many ways, itcan be the next step to a great adventurefor a child,” New York City CouncilSpeaker Christine C. Quinn said. “I amthrilled that this bill is ensuring that ournext generation of New Yorkers will knowwhat great resources the library has tooffer – books, classes, computers, and somuch more – all at the fingertips of everychild.”

“This bill is critical in helping the NewYork Public Library achieve its goal ofengaging students from the time they arebabies all the way until their teenage years,”said New York Public Library President,Paul LeClerc. “Library cards are the freebut priceless keys needed to unlock thewide variety of materials and programs
