MASTERING THE LIBRARY

Page 8: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Finding a book is easy is you remember a few things There are 4 main parts of the library

Fiction

Non-Fiction

Reference

Biography

Page 9: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

FICTION

A fiction book is one that is not true. An author makes up the story and the characters.

Page 10: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

NON FICTION

A non fiction book is true. It has factual information about a subject or an event.

Page 11: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

BIOGRAPHYA biography is the true story of a

person’s life.

Page 12: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

REFERENCEA reference book is

true and contains facts, just like non fiction. But these are a special section of books that cannot be checked out.

Page 13: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Finding a book is easy if you remember a few things Every book has a call number that can be

found on the spine of the book

Page 14: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

The call number is like an address telling where the book “lives.” Look for the identifying prefix

REF = Reference FIC = Fiction B/BIO = Biography ### = Non Fiction

Look around the library and see if you can locate all four

of these areas.

Page 15: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

A call number might look like this:

REF

973

OXF

159

MCC

B

JOH

FIC

TRA

OR THIS

OR THIS

OR THIS

Page 16: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

what section you need, you can use the rest of the call number to figure out exactly where the book you want is located.

Once you know

Page 17: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Fiction is organized alphabetically We use the author’s last name So a book written by Sarah Dessen would be

found under:

FIC

DES

FIC tells you what section to look in

DES tells you where in the alphabet the book can be found

Page 18: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Biography is also organized alphabetically

But we use the last name of the subject of the book.

So a biography on Jackie Chan would be found under “C.”

BIO

CHAN

A biography on Allen Iverson would be found under “I.”

BIOIVERSON

Page 19: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Reference and Non Fiction use numbers and letters The number can range from 0 to 999.The number may also have decimals

for greater specificity.Books are placed in order from lowest

to highest number.

Page 20: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

So . . . In Non Fiction you might see call numbers like this:

346

TRA

346.1

ING

346.15

BOS

346.2

WEA

Page 21: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

Reference uses the same type of number but adds the prefix REF

REF346TRA

REF346.1ING

REF346.15

BOS

REF346.

2WEA

REMEMBER!!!!

When you look up a book, it is really important to write down all the numbers and letters that make up the call number.

Writing down the title is also a good idea.

Page 23: Woodcreek High School Library Megan Christian, Librarian mchristian@rjuhsd.us August 2011

To recap . . .

To find a book, you need to know it’s call number (located on the spine).

The call number will tell you what section of the library to look in.

The call number will also allow you to pinpoint the book’s location.

Biographies and Fiction will be organized alphabetically.

Non Fiction and Reference use numbers.
