My transformation from Civilian to Soldier was a dynamic change. I had the values of a soldier instilled in me; I became a leader of soldiers and
instilled the same values into my subordinates. I did not change myself. I only built a better foundation to support myself and others.

Army Strong
There is strong. And then there’s Army Strong.
Army strong is a unique brand of strength. Everyone is familiar with the tangible
power of the U.S. Army: the Apaches, the Humvees, the weaponry, the push-ups. It is
harder to see, but it is this strength that makes the U.S. Army the preeminent land
power on earth.
Being Army Strong is about much more than being physically fit. It is mental and
emotional strength. It is the confidence to lead. It is the courage to stand up for your
beliefs. It is the compassion to help others. It is the desire for lifelong learning. It is
the intelligence to make the right decision. It is making a difference for yourself, your
family, your community and our nation.
Army Strong is also the kind of strength that endures. It has endured for over 230
years. It is the strength that comes from challenging training, teamwork, Army Values
and personal experience. A Soldier’s time in the Army may come to an end, but he or
she will always be Army Strong because the lessons learned and values gained are
timeless. They will serve as a springboard to life beyond the Army and will last long
after physical strength fades.
ARE YOU ARMY STRONG?
I am an American Soldier
I am a Warrior and a member of a team
I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values
I will always place the mission first
I will never accept defeat
I will never quit
I will never leave a fallen comrade
I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills
I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself
I am an expert and I am a professional
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat
I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life
I am an American Soldier
The Army remains a values-based organization committed to the ideals of Loyalty,
Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These ideals
are ingrained into the fibers of every American Soldier

Find Your Strength
Service to Country: Tradition, History, and Army Values
Continue a Proud Tradition
Citizen Soldiers have proudly defended the United States for
more than 230 years.
It began in 1775, when the Minutemen put down their tools and picked up their muskets to
repel a threat to their way of life.
And today’s Army and Army Reserve Soldiers are prepared to
follow in their footsteps if the need should arise.
You’ll have the satisfaction of continuing to serve your
country, defending our freedom, and maintaining the
American way of life.
ARMY VALUES
Your Strongest Weapon
IT MEANS YOU LIVE UP TO A HIGHER STANDARD
Many people know what the words Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service,
Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage mean. But how often do you see
someone actually live up to them? Soldiers learn these values in detail during
Basic Combat Training (BCT), from then on they live them every day in
everything they do-whether they’re on the job or off. In short, the seven core
Army Values are what being a Soldier is all about.
Loyalty: Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit and
other soldiers
Duty: Fulfill your obligations
Respect: Treat people as they should be treated
Selfless Service: Put the welfare of the Nation, the Army and your subordinates before
your own
Honor: Live up to the Army values
Integrity: Do what’s right, legally and morally
Personal Courage: Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral).

Education Paying For Your Education
One of the most important benefits you can receive as a Soldier is money to further your
education or pay off existing student loans. While skills training in the Army is always a

Education Dreams Become Reality
Through The Army Education System
How much will I receive?
Based on your length of active duty service, you are entitled to a percentage of the following:
-Cost of tuition and fees, not to exceed the most expensive in-state undergraduate tuition at a public institution of higher
education (paid to school);
-Monthly housing allowance* equal to the basic allowance for housing payable to a military E-5 with dependents, in the
same zip code as your school (paid to you);
-Yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1000 per year (paid to you); and -A one-time payment of $500 paid to certain
individuals relocating from highly rural areas
How many months of assistance can I receive?
Generally, you may receive up to 36 months of entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
How long am I eligible?
You will be eligible for benefits for 15 years from your last period of active duty of at least 90 consecutive days. If you were
released for a service-connected disability after at least 30 days of continuous service, you will also be eligible for benefits
for 15 years.
Example:
Tuition and fees for full time enrollment: $6700. Highest in-state tuition and fees: $7000.
Scenario 1: If you separated following three years on active duty and are going to school full-time, you would receive
$6700 for tuition and fees, $1000 for books and supplies, and the monthly housing allowance.

Financial Stability
and Security The Army is committed to the well being of the community of people who serve and stand ready to
defend the nation. Soldiers and their families receive comprehensive health care, life insurance and
generous vacation time.
Health Care
As a Soldier, you and your family are automatically covered by a comprehensive HMO-type health
care plan called TRICARE that provides medical and dental care at little or no cost.
TRICARE enrollees receive most health care at a Military Treatment Facility (MTF), where a primary
care manager (PCM) supervises their care. The Army's health care team is one of the biggest health
care networks in the world, utilizing state-of-the-art technology in world-renowned facilities. A
network of "preferred" or "in-network" providers add to the services offered at MTFs. Soldiers and
their families are free to make appointments with any authorized provider. Separate programs are
available for Soldiers and their families who are on remote assignment or overseas.
Life Insurance
Service members' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a program of low cost group life insurance for
Active Duty and Army Reserve Soldiers. SGLI coverage is available in $10,000 increments up to the
maximum of $400,000. SGLI premiums are currently $.065 per $1,000 of insurance, regardless of the
member's age.
Vacation
Time off is an important component of Soldier life and well being. Soldiers on Active Duty receive:
30 days vacation earned annually
Weekends free
National holidays
Sick days as needed
Basic Allowance for Housing
(BAH)
Basic Allowance for Substance
(BAS 2015)
Basic Allowance for Substance is money paid to soldiers who do not eat in a Army
Dining Facility. It is money paid to the soldier to buy groceries with.
You will NOT receive this money while you are attending BCT.
Current BAS is: $367.92
The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a U.S. based allowance prescribed by
geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. It provides
uniformed Service members equitable housing compensation based on housing
costs in local civilian housing markets within the United States when government
quarters are not provided. A uniformed service member stationed outside the
U.S., including U.S. territories and possessions, not furnished government
housing, is eligible for Overseas Housing Allowance (OAH).
