ArticlesIntroducing Your Dog To Your NewBaby

Have you given much thought to how your familypet is going to react when suddenly your love, cuddles and attention is going elsewhere? Theywill have already sensed changes during yourpregnancy, but nothing can prepare them except

you. Here are a few hints and tips:

l Throughout the pregnancy, take the time totrain your dog to stop jumping up, go to his bedon command and any other bad habits.l

Establish boundaries with the nursery beingoff-limits. Conditioning your dog to understandthat there is an invisible barrier that he may notcross without your permission can be done with acombination of clicker training and rewarding withtheir favourite treats.l Set clear boundaries when your baby is bornusing an item of their clothing or a muslin clothand train them to sniff from a distance while youare holding the item. Once you have this undercontrol, they should understand to wait for yourcommand to allow him to approach your baby.

l When your baby comes home, ask aprofessional pet carer, friend or family to takethem out for a walk so their energy levels are low. Before returning, wait at the doorstep and makesure to keep your dog calm.l You can allow your dog to sniff the baby, butfrom a respectful distance. Dont bring the babytoo close. Eventually, the dog can be allowed toget closer. By doing this youre teaching them thatbaby is precious to you and youre controllingtheir interaction.l Supervise the dog and babys interaction.

Teach your child not to bother the dog so it islearned quickly to leave a peaceful dog alone andensure theyre never left alone.l Keep up the dogs normal routine such aswalks and feeding, again, look for a pet carer, friend or family member as this will help your dogfeel secure and allow him to relax about the newaddition to the family.l Finally, as a Bull Terrier lover, please dontassume your baby is safer around more cuddlybreeds; all dogs are a risk so please dontassume your dog will not pose a problem basedon breed alone. Take the time during yourpregnancy to ensure you can control your dog atall times in all situations as your child's safetycomes first.l Seek help and advice from a recommendedPet Carer and Dog trainer to ensure both yourcanine and your human baby can live happilyalongside each other.*** For further information contact Tracey on

Im Pregnant! What Employers Needto Know

Pregnant employees or those on maternity leavehave many key rights in accordance withemployment law. This includes:

l Up to 52 weeks maternity leave regardless oflength of service (26 weeks ordinary maternityleave + additional maternity leave)l Statutory maternity pay (or maternityallowance if length of service is not sufficient)

l Receipt of full benefits during maternity leavel Paid time off for ante natal classesl Not to be dismissed for pregnancy ormaternity-related reasons, to be offered suitablealternative role in redundancy situations inpreference to other employeesl Protection from discriminationl The right to return to the same job after aperiod of ordinary maternity leave on the sameterms and conditions.

The latter may be more difficult returning afteradditional maternity leave but any alternative roleshould be a reasonable equivalent on the sameterms and with the same status.

Ideally when a female employee announces theyare pregnant, a risk assessment should be doneparticularly if their work could place them andtheir unborn child at risk eg carrying heavy loads, working in dangerous conditions.

Pregnant employees are required to give their

MAT B1 to their employers which they receive at26 weeks pregnancy. This indicates the possibleexpected date of delivery allowing both parties toplan ahead. The employee can go off onmaternity leave at any time from the 11th weekbefore the expected week of confinement. Theycould even work right up to date of deliveryalthough that is not advisable. Maternity leavecan start on any day of the week.

Whilst on maternity leave they accrue holidays, which can be taken after their maternity payperiod ends and before they return to work.

Employers need to be seen to be treatingemployees who are pregnant or on maternityleave fairly. If they fail to do so then the penaltycould be huge employment tribunalcompensation.

The Women's Lawyer TWLAn exemplary personaland prompt service frontedby me, Camilla Choudhury

    - Khawaja. I provide anaffordable andapproachable service thushopefully breaking downthe perception of fat catlawyers and indeed the fog

that is the law. The Legal Consultancy is aimedat recognising the imminent legal aid cuts due tobe made as of the 31st March of this year, therecent change allowing direct access to barristersand of course the overall changes within the legal

    system.

As you may be aware cuts in excess of 350mare being made to the legal aid budget, the cutsare in those areas which affect women in themain and will result in several more litigants inperson; the effects of this, the resultant delaysand the potential miscarriages of justice arereason enough to see the need for TWL not onlyas a corporate venture but also one which allowsfor the education and empowerment of women.

I keep costs down for the client by supporting andguiding them though the relevant procedure andexplaining the substantive law, offering themguidance should their case require the serving ofa claim/petition etc, which they submit in theirown names as a litigant in person but with theknowledge and first hand experience of abarrister/lawyer behind them.

Through the charitable arm of the business, Iintend to arrange a series of lectures, in line withAdult Education guidelines, to inform women oftheir legal rights and duties, so as to avoid theirbeing exploited by theiremployers/husband/partner/landlord/tenant etc.The lectures will be from varying topics such asdivorce, property matters - how to secure one'sinterest in the family home, planning and schoolappeals through to consumer protection advice.

I am hopeful the efforts we as women can makecollectively will enable us to lead our lives withmore control and indeed clarity with regards toboth our legal rights and duties.Camilla Choudhury - Khawaj Visitwww.thewomenslawyer.co.uk

Useful InformationHMRC & VATBusinesses that have failed to submit their VATreturns will be targeted by HM Revenue andCustoms(HMRC), with warnings that their taxaffairs will be closely scrutinised. Businesseshave to submit VAT returns every month and

most do so on time. Businesses are being givenan opportunity to get up to date and pay the taxthey owe by 28th February. After that, HMRC willtarget them and take a much closer look at theirtax affairs. If business owners come forwardvoluntarily, HMRC says they could receive betterterms, as any penalty they pay may be lower thanif HMRC comes to them first.

Real Time Information RTIIn April 2013 employers will start sending PAYE
