President’s Message Hello to our students, families, staff, and community!

I'd like to thank the members of our board and leadership for all their hard work, time, energy, and dedication for JHS. We are successful because of your efforts, ideas, and talents. Thanks to Alisa Crawley-Davis (Website), Carla Clark (Secretary), Denise Constantineau (VP Fundrais-ing), Denise Mortensen (Volunteer Coordinator), Kim Kuhne (Advocacy Chair), and Laura Peterson (VP Membership).

We had a great turnout for the showing of Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age. This documentary reviewed the struggles of technology, social media, video games, and academics and also shared solutions on how to help our kids navigate the digital world. Thanks to the partner-ship between Jackson HS PTSA, Gateway PTSA, and Heatherwood PTA, this film was available to our communities free of charge. This event helps us to reach our goal this year of holding two parent education opportunities. Thank you for attending.

A Parent Guide handout was distributed at the event. Included are topics and questions to help guide family discussion on technology uses. Click HERE to access the Parent Guide.

“TechTalkTuesdays” is a great resource through Screenagers with weekly topics to help you manage and decrease struggles around screen time. Click HERE to sign up to read the weekly articles and sign up for the TTT Blog.

IMPORTANT DATES:

Tuesday, November 6: REMEMBER TO VOTE!

There is a ballot drop box in Mill Creek located in the turnaround at the Mill Creek Post Office.

Tuesday, November 13: QPR Gatekeeper Training in the JHS Library, 7-8:30 p.m. (doors open and light snacks available at 6:30 p.m.)

This training is open to all families, staff and community members.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper you will learn to:

∙ Recognize the warning signs of suicide

∙ Understand the myths and facts about suicide

∙ Know how to offer hope

∙ Know how to get help and save a life

Straightforward, short, and impactful, this simple training is suitable for anyone in the community age 16 and over and will be taught by Wendy Burchill, Certified QPR Instructor, from the Snohomish Health District.

Wednesday, November 14: JHS PTSA Membership Meeting in the JHS Conference Room, 7-8:30 p.m.

Hope to see you at the membership meeting to review financials and goals, hear an Advocacy update to include the recent WA State Legislative Assembly, learn about opportunities with the PTSA, get updates from JHS administration, and much, much more!

Tuesday, November 27: JHS PTSA Fundraising/Community Building event at AR Workshop in Mill Creek, 6-9 p.m.

Join in the fun to create a DIY project for your home or as a holiday gift. Your project options are Plank Wood Sign, Porch Sign, Jewelry Board, Wood Tray, Lazy Susan, Wood Photo Frame, or our NEW Pedestal Tray! Customize your project with your choice of (non-toxic!) stain and designer paint colors. This event is not restricted to JHS families—all are welcome! Click HERE to view all available projects you can create and pay to reserve your project and spot for the workshop. Share this event with your friends! Advanced regis-tration is required.

Thursday, November 29: Coffee with the Principal in the JHS Library, 7-8 p.m.

Join in for an evening discussion with Mr. Peters to hear what exciting things are happening at JHS!

Thank you and have a great November!

Growing Counseling Team

We have had the honor and pleasure of being able to hire one new full-time counselor and one new half-time counselor due to our growth. We are lucky to have two fabulous new people working with our team, Olivia Scalet and Jennifer Byrne. Because of this, we have needed to adjust the alpha of which students meet with which counselor. Below is the new breakdown based on students’ last names.

We know this may be difficult for some, but our counseling staff is working closely together to make sure each other has all the information they need to help students with the transition. Thank you for your understanding.

Both the boys and girls cross-country teams qualified for state finals this past weekend as the boys won the district race, taking 1st place, and the girls earned 2nd place. The girls team—led by Anna Skoog, Brianna Heng, Sarah Sewell, Ally Kim, and Audrey Tracy—finished 2nd at the district XC meet and qualified for state in Pasco. School Scoop continued AP Government Guest Speakers

Seven guest speakers appeared between September and October for the ten sections of AP U. S. Government & Politics at Jackson. Each candi-date for U. S. Congressional District #1 and the 44th Legislative District races was invited to speak during lunches to accommodate students in Ms. Schafte’s, Mr. Herber’s, and Mr. Trueit’s classes. Speakers included former Jackson High School graduate Jared Mead who was running for Washington State congress as a representative. His opponent, incumbent Mark Harmsworth, also spoke to students. Students saw both state senate candidates for the 44th Legislative District, Doug Roulstone and Steve Hobbs. Mill Creek area County Council member Terry Ryan, 44th state representative John Lovick, and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene also came to speak to students recently. Students used the guest speaker appearances to complete required projects encouraging them to become more familiar with those who serve their neighborhoods in elected office.

College Help

For students who need college-related and Naviance help, Sarah Pewitt, High School & Beyond Facilitator for our district, will be at Jackson all day every Wednesday in the Career Center, and she can be contacted at [email protected].

The Aussies Are Coming!

Every year, Jackson High School hosts a group of students from Australia for a short visit. This year, they will be coming in January, and National Honor Society is looking for host families. The Aussies will stay with their hosts for ten nights, January 11–22. Any JHS family who wants to host an Aussie student needs to fill out an application and biography—but please make sure you are fully committed before you apply! Email [email protected] if interested in applying. Host applications are due by November 7.

Free Printing

Since students no longer have the ability to print their school work to the JHS library printers, did you know that you can print up to 70 pages per week (in black and white) for FREE at any Sno-Isle library? After your 70-page limit, you will be charged 10 cents per page. A week runs from Sunday through Saturday. Color printing is 50 cents per page, and although it is not available at all libraries, color printing is available at the Mill Creek library. Don’t have a library card? Those are free, too! Visit a local library, get your card, and start printing.

Blood Drive Sign-ups

Our fall Blood Drive is almost here. Jackson High School is one of the biggest contributors to the Blood Bank. Sign-ups begin Thursday, November 1, and go through Tuesday, November 13, for the November 14 event. Students can sign up during lunches or in the Activities Center. Questions? Contact Jason Gadek, ASB Advisor, at [email protected].

District News Test Scores Show… Our Students Rock! Did you know that our district has the highest English Learner graduation rate in Washington state? And our student assessment scores last year outperformed the state’s average assessment scores in every subject! Students are working hard in their learning, and staff are providing students with the targeted, coordinated supports they need to excel.

FAFSA Season Has Begun! Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an office of the U.S. Department of Education. FAFSA coordinates with postsecondary schools and financial institutions to help students and families pay for college. Watch for FAFSA completion events happening around the dis-trict. Find more information at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Slight Calendar Change There is a slight change to the school year calendar. Friday, June 7, will be a 2.5 early release for all students to allow teachers time to com-plete grading. Friday, June 14, will be a 75-minute early release for Learning Improvement Friday. The updated year-at-a-glance and student art calendars are available online if you’d like to print them for your reference. The district website calendar is also a convenient, up-to-date reference that integrates with the district mobile app. If you have the mobile app, you have the most current district and school calendar dates.

Online Safety Tips Keep the computer in a busy area of your home.

Use an app to keep an eye on your child’s online activity on their device.

Talk about cyberbullying. Ask if someone they know has been a victim. Ask if they have been victimized.

Set up email and social media accounts with your children. Know their screen names and passwords and explain the reasons for not including any personal information in profiles.

Know who is in the “buddy lists.” Get to know the cyberfriends as well as you know those who visit your home.

Parents and guardians may find the following resources helpful to begin a conversation about the dangers of engaging in cyberbullying and how to stay safe online:

Stop Bullying Now

Did You Miss a Call from Us? If missed a call from your school, please first check your voice mail or your email for the message rather than calling the school. Schools are often inundated with phone calls from parents after they send an automated call and cannot answer all of the calls.

Is Your Contact Information Up-to-Date at School? If your contact information has changed, please let your school know so we can reach you. For JHS, contact DeeAnn Williamson at [email protected].

Is Your Family Prepared? Does your family have a plan in case of bad weather, school closure, or delay? Who will pick up your student, if needed? How will you com-municate if phone lines are jammed? Do you have needed emergency supplies in your car and at home? Snohomish County Emergency Man-agement has helpful online resources to help you create and practice emergency response plans with your family and neighborhood.

Remember to Vote Nov. 6 Remember to deliver your ballot to a ballot drop box near you or put it in the mail by Nov. 6—postage is not required for ballots.

Safety Tip Line Do you or your student have a concern about someone experiencing bullying or harassment? Or have you perhaps heard a rumor about someone bringing a weapon or drugs to school? Report it! You can talk directly with your school’s office or you can call, text, or email your concern.

If there is reason for concern about safety on a designated walkway to school, call 9-1-1 immediately for authorized, quick help. We have strong partnerships with local law enforcement who share our interest in safe schools and neighborhoods.

Student safety is a priority for all of us. Working together, we can help make our neighborhoods and schools nurturing places for students to safely learn and grow.

Mobile App Families can download the district mobile app to easily access student information, grades, attendance, lunch balances, borrowed library books, calendars, and more! Translate notifications and app functions into the language you prefer.

Kudos Thank you so much to the following volunteers who inventoried the school's textbooks in record time!: Jennifer Sinha, Kristi Patricelli, Linh Du, Sandy Cho, April Berg, Edna Vasquez, Jovie Santos, Lea Anderson, Lihua Tang, Cheryl Hajek, Christa Pederson, Kelly Howell, Merav Caspi, Denise Mortensen, Lisa Mills, Valerie Johnson, Zoe Caesar, Lisa Wininger, Lovejoy Nable, and Kristen Bergeron. Thank you to Diana Rennhack and Jennifer Sinha who helped with picture retakes! Naviance Workshop on October 29: PTSA would like to thank Sarah Pewitt, High School & Beyond Facilitator, for helping parents of junior students navigate the new and improved Naviance program. Thank you to our students, parents, staff, and community members for taking time to complete the Principles and Resolutions survey. Your responses were valuable in helping our JHS PTSA voting delegates determine the issues of greatest importance to our community. Thank you to Lisa Mills for attending the training class PTA and the Law on Wednesday, October 24. PTA and the Law deals with state and federal rules and regulations for running a charitable tax-exempt nonprofit corporation in Washington state and explains how these rules can and do affect your PTA. Our PTSA leaders participate in many training sessions during the year and are always increasing their knowledge to ensure our PTSA is successful for our students, families, and staff. Thank you to our JHS PTSA representatives for attending the 40th Annual WA State Legislative Assembly on October 20-21. We appreciate your time and energy advocating for all students and staff at Jackson HS and in Washington State. Thank you: Denise Constantineau, Jen Hirman, Kim Kuhne, Laura Peterson, and Lisa Mills. And we would not have had such a successful weekend without the wonderful leadership of Michelle Nims, our WA State PTA President. Thank you to our PTSA leaders for helping at Curriculum Night on September 26. Thank you for helping families learn more about member-ship, membership benefits, Pass the Hat donations, volunteer opportunities, Screenagers showing, Naviance clinic, Reflections Art Program, and collecting food donations to help support our Student and Family Advocate. Thanks to Denise Constantineau, Denise Mortensen, Kim Kuhne, Laura Peterson, Lisa Mills, and Toni Wilson.
