Kidney disease sometimes manifests itself with a sweetammonia-type aroma on a person’s breath. If youhave osteoporosis, which means your bone density isdeclining, and it has not yet been diagnosed, your dentistmay be the first to pick it up in dental x-rays that showair pockets and dead bone. Likewise, gums that havepulled away from the teeth and teeth that are grounddown or fractured may indicate an abnormally high stresslevel. Upper front teeth that are worn thin and have lostsignificant enamel, may be a sign of bulimia, an eatingdisorder characterized by binge eating and then vomiting.

WESTMONT – Good eats and rock-in’ beats will return to the village July9 to 12 with the Taste of Westmont.

The award-winning summer festi-val will feature four days of carnivalgames, band performances and localfood, according to Larry McIntyre,communications director for the vil-lage.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.Mayor Ron Gunter said the Taste

started in 1996 as part of the village’scelebration of its 75th anniversary.The event was so well-received the vil-lage decided to continue with it, Gunt-er said.

“It really provides an opportunityfor our community to come togetherdowntown,” he said.

Music starts at 6:30 p.m.July 10 with the Blooze Broth-ers, a Blues Brothers tributeband. The other act for theevening will take the stage at8:30 p.m. when North of Eightperforms. North of Eight isa Pink Floyd tribute bandwhose act will include a lightshow.

On July 11, Derringer andRye will play a mix of coun-try and pop music at 4:30 p.m.Hot Rocks, a Rolling Stonestribute band, will performat 6:30 p.m. The evening willend with a show by DeaconBlues, a Steely Dan tribute

band that will be joined byGrammy-winning artist Sug-ar Blue.

From noon to 4 p.m. July12, the main stage will hosta blues jam session in whichmusicians will be able to comeup and play together.

At 6 p.m., there will be amusical tribute to Muddy Wa-ters, who lived in Westmontfor 10 years prior to his death,McIntyre said. The perfor-mance will feature severalblues musicians, includingToronzo Cannon, the MikeWheeler Band, Omar Cole-man, Demetria Taylor andJoe Morganfield, Waters’youngest son, who is expectedto sing.

McIntyre said there willbe several members of Wa-ters’ family at the perfor-mance, which will include arededication of Waters intothe R&B Hall of Fame intowhich he was entered earlierthis year.

There also will be a youthstage at Cass Avenue and Ir-ving Street featuring the Bestof the Burbs Battle of theBands contest.

The competition for musi-cians aged 12 to 21 will feature

five performances per day,starting at 6:30 p.m. July 9,with bands playing every halfhour.

The winner will be an-nounced at 9 p.m.

The schedule is the samefor July 10 and 11, with the ex-ception that the contest willbegin at 6 p.m.

The winner of each nightwill compete starting at 2 p.m.July 12. At 3:45 p.m., the over-all winner will be announced.

There will be a carnival onCass Avenue between Burl-ington Avenue and IrvingStreet, which will requirewristbands and tickets.

On July 9, there will be aKidzapalooza carnival spe-cial, where wristbands will beavailable for $15.

From noon to 4 p.m. July 11and 12, wristbands will sell for$20. From 5 to 8 p.m. July 12,they will cost $15.

A craft show will be heldfrom noon to 10:30 p.m. July11 and noon to 8 p.m. July12 on Cass Avenue betweenChicago and Burlington av-enues.

Report: Breuder spentmore than$100,000 in foundation money

College of DuPage PresidentRobert Breuder spent more than$102,000 of the College of DuPageFoundation’s money from 2010 to2014, according to a Chicago Tri-bune report.

Citing statements filed by the In-ternal Revenue Service, the reportstated the embattled president, who isnow on paid administrative leave, ex-pensed the money between July 2010and June 2014 for “leadership cultiva-tion meetings.”

However, records indicate themoney also was spent on bar tabs, arifle for a foundation officer, a lim-ousine ride and more for trustees,senior managers, foundation boardmembers and college vendors, accord-ing to the report.

Included in the total is $57,597spent at the Max McGraw WildlifeFoundation, a private club for hunt-ing, fishing and land managementin Dundee Township, the report

stated. The school foundation paidfor about three dozen outings atthe club during Breuder’s time atthe college, including retreats andmeetings, and the school has paid$26,133 to Max McGraw through Oc-tober.

One outing in March 2014 forBreuder and three guests to eat andhunt rang up a total bill of $1,292 – all

A former College of DuPage trust-ee has filed a complaint alleging thecommittee for a slate of former Boardof Trustees candidatesfailed to report a sizableloan during the processof the April election.

Kim Savage, who wassoundly defeated in herbid for re-election thisyear, filed the formalcomplaint with the Illi-nois State Board of Elections, alleging a$20,000 loan from current college Chair-woman Kathy Hamilton to the CleanSlate for College of DuPage Committeewas not reported in a timely manner.

The committee supported then-can-didates Charles Bernstein, DeanneMazzochi and Frank Napolitano.

Savage alleges in the complaint theloan was received April 27, but not re-ported to the state until May 17 – longafter the five business days requiredby Illinois’ Campaign Disclosure Act.

In a statement, Savage acknowl-edged small campaigns often have dif-ficulty following the act.

“The Clean Slate ran on a very vocalplatform of total transparency and toend all alleged violations of policy, yettheir own campaign clearly failed to fol-low one of the simplest requirements ofthe Campaign Disclosure Act,” she said.

The trio’s platform was announcedafter months of controversy at the col-lege, including a $763,000 buyout forPresident Robert Breuder, trusteesexpensing questionable items at theon-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, theftand forgery charges being broughtagainst a school employee and more.

In a high-profile election, the threeswept the race, with several thousanddollars in donations and in-kind ser-vices from Hamilton, her husband andher campaign fund, according to theIllinois State Board of Elections.

Since taking office, the new trusteesvoted Hamilton into the chairwoman-ship and formed a majority, enactingseveral reforms, including placingBreuder and two financial administra-tors on leave and agreeing to pay for astate financial audit of the school.

None of the Clean Slate trusteesresponded to a request for comment,though campaign manager ClaytonTurner did via email.

“The Clean Slate for College of Du-Page Committee has reported all dona-tions and expenses,” he said. “The CleanSlate Committee has corrected technicalnonconformities and is fully compliant.”

In the case of a Campaign Disclo-sure Act violation, before determininga possible fine, the Illinois State Boardof Elections website states the follow-ing items are considered:

• Whether a committee attemptedto disclose the contribution and anyattempts made to correct the violation

• Whether the violation is attributedto a clerical or computer error

• The amount of the contribution• Whether the violation arose from

a discrepancy between the date a con-tribution was reported transferred andthe date it was received by a committee

• The number of days a contributionreport was late

• Past violationsRecently, an internal school audit

Questions also wereraised by watchdog group Edgar Coun-ty Watchdogs about an email sent bySavage that was made public in whichshe asked for help from the school’s at-torney with answering questions foran article about the election.

“Considering the intense scrutiny thecollege was under during the same timeI was in the middle of an election cam-paign, I had legal and fiduciary responsi-bility to avoid compromising the college’slegal position in any statements I madeas both a candidate and a sitting boardmember,” Savage said in the statement.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is debating the future of the Waterleaf Restaurant on campus.

Were you pleased to hear that your taxdollars and students’ tuition payments wereused to fund more than $530,000 in annuallosses for Waterleaf Restaurant?

Probably not.The fancy, and frankly, quite nice restau-

rant at the College of DuPage has been amassive money loser since it opened in2011. It’s virtually certain that any privatelyowned restaurant that saw those kinds oflosses would’ve long since ceased opera-tions.

And lest you find yourself thinkingthat these losses are strictly a result of therestaurant’s use as an educational facil-ity, that’s not the case, either. Studentsonly staff the restaurant on Mondays andTuesdays; the rest of the time, it’s run as aprofessional restaurant.

The school’s trustees are consideringthree options to stem the tide of red ink:

convert the restaurant to classrooms, openit to leasing and events, or repurpose it asan academic lab.

Nice as the restaurant is, all of thoseoptions sound preferable to the status quo.With all the fine dining options that aboundin the College of DuPage’s district, it’s hardto believe that anyone ever thought thatWaterleaf could’ve been anything but afinancial boondoggle.

If there’s a way to let students continueto train in a restaurant-style environmentwhile cutting the losses way back, it’s prettyobvious that would be a desirable outcome.And it sounds like several trustees arethinking along those lines.

We’d like to see Waterleaf continue insome fashion, with some mix of student andfaculty running things, but as a profession-ally run restaurant, this is a business modelthat clearly has failed.

I think the thingthat’s most important here to say is thatif you would like to become a teacher andbenefit from those benefits that you saythat we receive, then you’re more thanwelcome to do that. ... I worked in corpo-rate America for over, oh, about 25 years,before I became a teacher. I have a bache-lor’s degree, I have a master’s degree and Ihave continuing education, and my salarycompensates me for the type of educationthat I have in the educational industry. Ialso don’t get bonuses that people get incorporate America, and I also don’t geta golden parachute if I was to leave anorganization in corporate America. Everyjob has their own benefits and perks.

Teachers havereally taken a hit then, because the cur-rent average salary in Illinois is $59,000.... As usual, small, unhappy minds arecomplaining when some people havemore than they do, even when the peoplethey describe really don’t. Rather thanattacking one group, which may or maynot have a better salary, doesn’t it makesense to work together to raise every-one’s salaries?

Get the facts rightRegarding [the] Sound Off “Teachers’

compensation has an impact on pensioncrisis” posted July 3. Generous vacationtime? We do not get paid vacation or hol-idays. We get paid for only days worked.Tenure for teachers? Haven’t you heard?Tenure means nothing anymore. We areevaluated as teachers and have to do agood job or we are watched and moni-tored, which is a very good thing to do,and I agree with that part. Pension? Weput money into our pension. What’s sadis the state keeps so-called borrowingour money, but never puts back whatthey borrowed. So please, get your facts

right before you speak.

Is Congress too timid?Does the U.S. Supreme Court have the

exclusive power to decide which casesto take on appeal or not, and how to dothe process? The answer is no. Pleasesee U.S. Constitution, Article 3, Section 2,paragraph two, last sentence. And I quote,“In all the other cases before mentioned,the Supreme Court shall have appellatejurisdiction both as to the law and fact,with such exceptions and under suchregulations as the Congress shall make.”This means that Congress can filter casesthat the Supreme Court may or may notdecide and set regulations for the appellateprocess. Congress has the power to focusand regulate the Supreme Court. It lookslike Congress is too timid to focus andregulate the [Supreme Court], even thoughit has the constitutional authority to do so.

No racial footnoteIsn’t President [Barack] Obama biracial?

He is the first biracial president of theU.S. Why does the media keep referringto him as the first black president? Themedia should refer to him as presidentwithout the racial footnote.

Bagging isn’t enoughMaybe in the scheme of things, this

small irritant doesn’t mean much to ourneighborhood. On my daily walks I comeacross neatly tied plastic bags of dog fe-ces left under trees or bushes. What is thepoint? Should we be thankful we won’thave to step in or pick up messy piles ofdog dirt? Why do dog walkers pick up,then let others dispose of the leavings?Please be considerate of others!

Cyclists should stay close to curbCourtesy begets courtesy. Illinois’ Vehi-

cle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1505 states bicy-clists should ride as close as practicableand safe to the right-hand curb or edge ofthe roadway. Beyond legal technicalities,obstructing traffic lanes is unsafe andpromotes a poor relationship with mo-torists. Particularly irksome are cyclinggroups taking the entire lane. Pleaseride in a way that promotes a safe andcourteous relationship with motorists.Promote bike riding as an ambassador.

DOWNERS GROVE – There aremany differences between the footballteams at Downers Grove North andDowners Grove South.

Now there are some similarities.Though the Mustangs and Trojans

sport different colors, run differentoffenses and are in different playoffclasses, both are in the same boat witheach having some personnel changesas they get set for the 2015 season.

Both sides of town will have newquarterbacks under center and somenew faces in the backfield and on de-fense, which make summer practicesa key time in the effort to lessen thelearning curve.

“We don’t have all of our offense ordefense in yet,” South head coach MarkMolinari said during the Red GrangeClassic 7-on-7 on June 25. “We’re slow-ly starting to install it all so we’ve gotprobably around 30 percent of our of-fense in and 50 percent of our defense.So it’s really just working on funda-mentals and by the end of July our goalis to have it all in.”

The option offense run by Northhead coach John Wander is relativelyeasy to learn compared to attacks thatplace more emphasis on the pass, butconsidering the Trojans saw three-yearstarting quarterback David Edwardsgraduate this spring, this summer iscrucial to getting a new signal-calleron track for the season. So far, seniorsBrandon Bancoro and Quinn McAnallyand junior Nick Taviani have been get-ting the reps at quarterback. Bancorowas a varsity free safety last seasonwhile McAnally was a backup quarter-back.

“Quinn has played it and Brandondid it on the lower levels, so it’s justgetting them back up to speed withwhat they already did,” Wander said.“We run the same stuff throughout theprogram, so it’s more like, ‘All right, I

remember that.’”Molinari and the Mustangs also

are giving three quarterbacks a lookduring the summer after the gradua-tion of Jordan Skach. Connor Kreifelwas a varsity backup QB last seasonwhile Riley Heavey was a wide receiv-er. Those seniors plus junior Joe To-noff, the sophomore team quarterbacklast year, all have been sharing timeduring summer camp.

“Nobody’s jumped up and grabbedthe position yet, so all three are com-peting,” Molinari said. “All three are

pretty good athletes, so I would antici-pate that whatever ends up happening[when the starter is named], we’ll findsomething for the other two to do.”

Whoever winds up under center forthe Mustangs will have some solid pro-tection in the form of Michigan-boundlineman Erik Swenson. Likewise forNorth’s quarterback as the Trojans re-turn their 2014 offensive line of centerBrennan Harmon, guards Luke Goer-gen and Liam Ninneman, and tacklesJimmy Artensen and Ryan Martin in-tact.

“We’ve got a lot of our offensiveline back, and that seems to be a goodthing,” Wander said. “We’re not overlylarge, but we’re playing very fast andmore physical than last year, so we’rehappy there. It’s helping our quarter-backs because the offensive line is sureof what they’re doing and it makes ourquarterbacks’ reads easier.”

Though things seem to be setting upnicely for both teams, there still aresome holes left to fill.

The IHSA announced some rulechanges that will affect postseasonplay in team sports, including a newway to seed teams in the football play-offs.

On June 15, the IHSA board ofdirectors approved a change to thestructure of the football playoffswhich will seed teams in Classes7A and 8A from 1 to 32. The previ-ous structure featured 16-team and8-team brackets to limit travel dis-tances.

However, that came under fire be-cause of an unbalanced seeding for-mat and many of the same teams fac-ing each other year after year. Forexample, last year Class 8A was bro-ken into a 16-team bracket and twobrackets of eight teams. The 16-teambracket, which included schoolsmostly from the north and northwestsuburbs as well as West SuburbanConference teams Lyons Township,Glenbard West and Oak Park-RiverForest, featured four teams with 8-1records and three 9-0 teams. Eachof the two eight-team brackets hadonly two 8-1 teams and no undefeatedteams.

The new rule should help allevi-ate the imbalance in the bracket andalso provide fresh matchups in theplayoffs. Three of the 16 first-roundgames in the Class 8A bracket wererematches of conference games fromthe regular season.

“We like to play other teams,”Downers Grove South coach MarkMolinari said. “We were thrilled toplay Simeon last year. We didn’t havethe result we wanted, but just to playsomeone else was awesome. If thatmeans we have to travel to Edwards-ville or somewhere else, I’m complete-ly fine with it.”

In the other six classes there willbe two 16-team brackets, thus elimi-nating eight-team quadrants. The pre-vious rule, according to the IHSA’srelease on the announcement, would“change the bracket to quadrants ifcertain travel mileage distances wereexceeded.”

“I love it,” Downers Grove Northcoach John Wander said. “They usedto say travel was bad; I think that’swhat makes it. We’re a unique sportwhere not everyone makes the play-offs, and if someone told me I had to goto East St. Louis, I’d be happier thanheck because that means we’re backin the playoffs this year.”

Other team sports also will havea restructuring in the postseason.In smaller classes and outside the

Chicago area sectionals in baseball,basketball, soccer, softball and vol-leyball had been separated into fourregionals based on geography andthen seeded. Now, sectionals will bebroken down into two sub-sectionalsto avoid loaded regionals such as theClass 3A baseball regional that in-cluded powerhouse teams Lemont,Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-WayWest, all state title contenders,meeting in the first rounds of theplayoffs.

In addition, the so-called suc-cess adjustment rule will be imple-mented for the 2015-16 school year.Non-boundaried schools with atleast two state trophies in the pastfour years and at least one in thepast two years will be moved up oneclass. In all, 23 teams were movedup.

“I’m thrilled, absolutely thrilled,”Molinari said. “We’ve been asking forit for a long time [as coaches] and I’llbe the first one to say it’s almost per-fect.”

Another local team that couldbe affected by the classification ad-justment is Nazareth football. TheRoadrunners had the third small-est enrollment, based on theirnon-boundary school multiplier, inClass 6A this past fall. With Monti-ni and Sacred-Heart Griffin, the fi-nalists each of the past two years inClass 5A, moving up to 6A, Nazarethcould be on the bubble to actuallymove down despite being defending6A champions. Another possibilityis a Nazareth-Montini playoff meet-ing.

“I go way back with [Montinicoach] Chris [Andriano],” Nazarethcoach Tim Racki said. “He was thehead coach at Montini when I playedthere. I have great respect for him. Wehave a great relationship. If we sawhim that would be a great challenge.”

While there will be some new per-sonnel for the Mustangs and Trojansthis year, one thing that won’t changeis the way both teams practice. The Il-

linois High School Association boardof directors implemented restrictionson the amount of times teams can havefull-pad, full-contact practice to 90 min-utes spread over three days per week,not to exceed 30 minutes each of thosedays. It’s a change that won’t affect ei-ther team.

“You see us out here wearing shells[helmets and shoulder pads only] mostof the time anyway. The rules on hit-ting, that’s what we’ve done forever.It’s not really going to have any effect,”Wander said. “The way we hit, we nev-er take anyone to the ground.”

DOWNERS GROVE – ErikSwenson always had thedream of playing football atMichigan. When he startedto gain notoriety on the fieldat Downers Grove South, hedidn’t waste any time solidi-fying his college plans as hecommitted to the Wolverinesas a sophomore.

Now heading into hissenior season, Swenson spokewith Chicago Football Mag-azine’s Jake Bartelson abouthis commitment to Michigan,the potential of his recruitingclass and how he hopes to takethe field as a freshman.

Bartelson: You committed toMichigan almost a year and a halfago, which is kind of early, so whatinspired such the early commitmentto Michigan?

Swenson: I’ve always beena huge Michigan fan. I got anoffer freshman year, playedthe whole season, thoughtabout everything, and Irealized I could not find abetter school than Michigan,so why not commit now? Whygo through all the coachesbothering me? I knew where Iwanted to go, and I didn’t evenbother looking anywhere elsebecause I knew I wanted to goto Michigan.

Bartelson: What about Michigansold to you?

Swenson: I grew up watch-ing them as a little kid, andthe tradition Michigan hasalways had. It’s an excellentlineman school. I mean, myidol is [2008 No. 1 NFL Draftpick] Jake Long. He’s on mywall, as I have a FatHead ofhim in my room. They havemy major I want to study insports management … thefacilities are top-notch. TheGlick [Field House], you walkin, and you just want to playfootball.

Bartelson: When Jim Harbaughtook over for Brady Hoke, at anypoint did you think you’d reconsid-er? Or did coach Harbaugh sit youdown? How did that process playout?

Swanson: When Hoke gotfired in [early December] andall through December, I was a

little hesitant. I knew we weregetting a great coach. ... [TheWolverines] were still solidduring the Hoke era, but I felteven more solid with Har-baugh coming here.

Bartelson: Looking at the 2016Michigan recruiting class, what areyour takeaways from the class you’llbe coming in with, and how excitedare you?

Swenson: I’ve been talking alot with a lot of guys outsideof Michigan, and we’ll have afew more commits this month.We’ll definitely be bumped upway higher than the 38 mark.… There’s an awesome classcoming in, and Harbaugh isgoing to do great things withthe 2016 class.

Bartelson: Do you feel pressureknowing you’re going into the BigTen and playing in the Big House?How are you going to deal with thatadversity?

Swenson: I mean, everyonefeels pressure going intothere, and it’s going to be ahard program. Harbaughmakes you work. Personally,I just like to compete. Swenson:Yes, Drevno and Ihave a great relationship al-ready. … We talk on the phoneat least every other, if not everyweek. He tells me what recruitsto talk to; I talk to them andgive some input back.

Bartelson: Has he said you’re go-ing to play on a specific spot on the

offensive line when you get there?Swenson: Definitely tackle,

for sure. Drevno does notreally care about seniority orage. He plays the best playerswhatsoever. I’m pretty sure heplayed three freshmen at USClast year.

As for left or right tackle,he hasn’t specified yet. … Imay more than likely startfreshman year – if not, sopho-more year – so I will be start-ing rather early compared toother recruits coming fromother schools.

Bartelson: You have one yearof football before you go on toMichigan. What’s the plan to stay inshape and continue to get ready forcollege?

Swenson: Just work oneverything and get everymuscle in my body stronger –my ankles, my shoulders, myknees – just to hold up againstcollege guys.
