Wighton Jagger Shaw Architects provide a bespoke service to suit the needs of individual clients in realising their aspirations from private residences through to commercial asset focused developments. With over 40 years combined experience our work ranges from new buildings to interventions in existing, often historic buildings. Through our expertise in gaining planning approvals for sites and buildings often dilapidated, ruined & of national importance located within sensitive areas such as conservation areas, Areas of Outstanding Beauty and Green Belt we are able to realise opportunities which are often deemed not to be commercially viable.

From a sympathetic remodelling or a new contemporary design of your home to suit your individual needs, to breathing new life into a historic property or creating value in the commercial market Wighton Jagger Shaw Architects hold the individual aspirations of each client at the heart of our designs.

PRACTICEWHAT WE DO

Page 4: WJS Architects A5 Brochure

Wighton Jagger Shaw Architects aim to understand and fulfil the individual aspirations of each client. Working closely with the client, private or commercial, we aim to establish a detailed brief and concept which forms the basis and focus upon which the scheme is developed.

Once the aspirations, brief and concept have been established the scheme is progressed taking into consideration the physical context and parameters of the site. Through detailed analysis of the site and an understanding of local and national planning legislation we are able to develop schematic proposals for discussion with the client which are then developed into a final approved scheme.

Consultations with local authorities and public bodies are undertaken as part of the pre-planning process with assistance from a number of specialist consultants where necessary. Through this detailed inclusive approach we aim to submit planning applications which are supported not only by the local planning officers and consultees but the wider local community. Our attention to detail and sympathetic and innovative designs look to achieve positive robust planning approvals which surpass the clients’ aspirations.

From the re-instatement of a scheduled ancient monument into a private residence to the design of a contemporary eco home in an Area of Outstanding National Beauty, Wighton Jagger Shaw Architects are able to draw on their experience and expertise in the gaining of planning approvals often in sensitive areas.

Hellifield Peel in North Yorkshire was a ruin for over 60 years until its recent re-construction into a large country house. Dating from the 14th Century the castle and scheduled monument has been developed in close collaboration with English Heritage due to its historical importance. The project was the first scheduled ancient monument post World War II to be brought back into residential use and was followed closely by Channel 4’s Grand Designs. The development has also been a test case for many similar projects across the country.

The completed house includes a contemporary self-contained apartment within the roof with views out over the surrounding countryside and more traditional rooms to the ground, first and second floors. As part of the sustainable strategy a ground source heat pump was incorporated within the ground which supplies all the hot water for the house.

CASE STUDY 2

Set in Green Belt land the site contained a dilapidated 1960’s bungalow which has been demolished in order to allow for the design and construction of a contemporary eco-house.

The design has been developed to respond to the tight constraints set by local and national planning policy and the parameters of the site.

Proposed Internal Views

The brief required a 4 bedroom dwelling with open living accommodation set around a private south facing terrace. The dwelling has been positioned within the contours of the site in order to achieve accommodation over two floors to fulfil the brief and comply with the strict planning constraints associated with volume and height of new dwellings in Green Belt land.

The sustainability strategy includes the use of photo voltaic panels, rain water harvesting and natural ventilation in order to achieve a zero-carbon dwelling.

POOL PAVILION AND PRIVATE GALLERYBEDFORDSHIRE

Set within the grounds of an existing country estate, this private sculpture gallery is sunk into the ground to minimise its impact upon the historic landscape. Carefully designed to address issues associated with Green Belt development the building includes a green roof that will allow the existing landscaping to be reinstated on completion.

The striking gallery space includes a range of natural light sources to best display a broad selection of contemporary and historic sculpture. These comprise top light via strip roof lights that wash down the walls, large glazed openings allowing sunlight to flood into the room and also diffuse light via a large adjacent open air pool linked to the gallery with an underwater glass wall.

few materials. These include shuttered concrete, glass and

timber to create a dramatic yet flexible space for displaying art.

Proposals for the restoration and conversion of a Scottish castle, which has been derelict for over one hundred years, back into a private residence.

The castle is a category A listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. Sensitive proposals for its conversion back into a carbon neutral family home ensure a sustainable future for the castle.
