Peter Burgers & Jacob Stenfert establish PEJA in 1937. A trading company in domestic appliances.

From 1945 onwards, PEJA is based in Arnhem. Peter Burgers dies not long after the war.

During the years after WWII, PEJAsells furniture, beds, domestic app-liances, household goods and everything that can be sold with a margin.

By the end of the 40s, this business declines and PEJA starts looking for new business areas. Antonius Bienemann joins PEJA in 1947.

In 1949, PEJA tries to sell some 300 used buses. Without much success. Until:

The coincidental meeting between Antonius Bienemann and a Russian officer leads to the first ‘mega-deal’ for PEJA: ƒ 4.5 million (€ 1.88 million). Customer: the Russians in Berlin. Paid for in goods.

In the years that follow, PEJA plays an important role in the business between Dutch companies and the so-called COMECON countries.Capital equipment and even shipbuilding deals are brokered by PEJA.

The ‘Leipziger Messe’ was the centre of trade between East & West until the end of the 80s, when Glasnost & Perestroika changed the world.

PEJA attended every exhibition from 1948 until 1989. From 1954 onwards, PEJA even has its own building on the premises!

Since 1978, Peja Producten and many of its daughter companies are based in the Arnhem head offices.

On the 27,000 sqm premises, the HQ offices, workshop and main European warehouse are located. Closeby are the river Rhine and the famous John Frost Bridge (from the film ‘A Bridge Too Far’, 1974).
