27.2 WEBSTER, M.R.*; SOCHA, J.J.; DE VITA, R.; Virginia Tech;[email protected] Elasticity of Tracheal Tubes in the American CockroachIn some insect species, diffusion−based respiration is supplementedwith convection. For insects that use rhythmic tracheal compression,convective ventilation is produced by the periodic collapse andre−inflation of various tracheae in the respiratory system, aphenomenon that is dependent on the unique structure and materialproperties of the tracheal tissue. To understand the underlyingmechanics of this method of gas transport, we are studying themicrostructure and material properties of the primary thoracictracheal tubes in American cockroaches. In previous tensile tests, wefound that these tracheae sustain large strains and exhibit a nonlinearelastic behavior. Although these tests provided crucial informationabout the mechanical behavior of the tracheal tubes, they wereinsufficient to fully describe the complex three−dimensional loadingconditions experienced in vivo by these tubes. Inflation−extensiontests, in which the trachea is pressurized while being stretched in thelongitudinal direction, provide mechanical data that are morephysiologically relevant. For this reason, we design and built aninflation−extension testing system that is able to measure low axialforces, internal pressures, and surface deformations of tracheal tubesof ~500 µm diameter. Images collected with two synchronized CCDcameras were analyzed using the digital image correlation method tocompute the strain field. In addition, we also developed a constitutiveequation that can capture the finite strains and nonlinear elasticity ofthe t rachea l tubes . Our u l t imate goa l i s to fo rmu la te athree−dimensional model that can be implemented into finite elementmethods to reproduce the complex mechanical response of trachealtubes under in vivo loading conditions. An important but understudied question is: Whatselection pressures cause divergent female behavior and/ormorphology? We hypothesize that Lepidochelys olivacea (oliveridley sea turtles) female alternative reproductive tactics (solitary vs.mass−nesting behaviors) relate to an ecological dimorphism −differential foraging strategies (neritic vs. pelagic). We areinvestigating this idea using morphometrics, stable isotopes andsatellite tracking.

P2.143 WEHRLE, BA*; GERMAN, DP; Univ. of California, Irvine;[email protected] the Adaptive Modulation Hypothesis: PhysiologicalChanges in in a Newly Herbivorous LizardFew studies of diet incorporate analyses of what an animal is actuallydigesting. Knowing what an animal digests (as opposed to only whatit ingests) allows us to understand if its physiology and morphologyare optimized for its nutritional source. According to the AdaptiveModulation Hypothesis, dietary specialization should lead to gutspecialization. We investigated potential digestive specializations ina lizard species that has shown rapid evolution of feeding anddigestive tract morphology. A population of the Italian Wall Lizard(Podarcis sicula) in Croatia has become primarily herbivorous andmorphologically distinct from its insectivorous source population in<30 generations. Though some morphological changes have beendocumented, it is unknown if gut function has shifted with this dietchange. We compared the gross morphology of the intestines of bothgroups of lizards, compared their diets, and measured performancesusing digestive enzyme activities and concentrations of fermentationend products (short chain fatty acids, SCFAs). In a common gardenexperiment, we measured digestive efficiency of lizards from theherbivorous and source populations on different diets. Experimentsare in progress, but we expected that the plant−eating populationwould have more plant material in their guts and a hindgut chamberin their distal intestines. Moreover, we expected to find differences inenzymatic activities among the populations, with the herbivoresshowing elevated carbohydrase activities. We also anticipated thatthe plant−eating population will have slower food transit times,increased microbial fermentation, and increased digestibility of aplant diet than the insectivorous population. Overall, this study willtest whether rapidly evolving morphological features can translateinto changes in animal performance.

S7.1−1 WEINERSMITH, K.L.*; HANNINEN, A.F.; SIH, A.;EARLEY, R.L.; University of California Davis, University ofVirginia, University of Alabama; [email protected] californiensis, a brain−infecting trematode parasite,is associated with changes in physiology and behavior in its killifishsecond intermediate hostThe trematode parasites Euhaplorchis californiensis (EUHA) andRenicola buchanani (RENB) infect California killifish (Fundulusparvipinnis) as second intermediate host. Infected killifish exhibitconspicuous behaviors, and infection is associated with a 10−30times increase in predation rates by birds, the parasites' shareddefini t ive host. EUHA is also associated with changes inneurotransmitter activity, which could result in downstream changesin steroid hormone release rates. In this study we explore associationsbe tween s t ress ho rmones ( co r t i so l ) and sex ho rmones(11−ketotestosterone and estradiol) and EUHA and RENB density inwild−caught California killifish. We find that the interaction betweenduration of handling stress and the density of EUHA influencesrelease rates of cortisol and 11−ketotestosterone. We discuss theimplications of these findings, and plans to further explore theserelationships using controlled infections.

How to change the template color theme You can easily change the color theme of your poster by going to the DESIGN menu, click on COLORS, and choose the color theme of your choice. How to add Text The template comes with a number of pre-formatted placeholders for headers and text blocks. You can add more blocks by copying and pasting the existing ones or by adding a text box from the HOME menu.

Text size Adjust the size of your text based on how much content you have to present. The default template text offers a good starting point. Follow the conference requirements.

How to add Tables To add a table from scratch go to the INSERT menu and click on TABLE. A drop-down box will help you select rows and columns.

You can also copy and a paste a table from Word or another PowerPoint document. A pasted table may need to be re-formatted by RIGHT-CLICK > FORMAT SHAPE, TEXT BOX, Margins.

Graphs / Charts You can simply copy and paste charts and graphs from Excel or Word. Some reformatting may be required depending on how the original document has been created.

How to change the column configuration RIGHT-CLICK on the poster background and select LAYOUT to see the column options available for this template. The poster columns can also be customized on the Master. VIEW > MASTER.

How to remove the info bars

If you are working in PowerPoint for Windows and have finished your poster, save as PDF and the bars will not be included. You can also delete them by going to VIEW > MASTER. On the Mac adjust the Page-Setup to match the Page-Setup in PowerPoint before you create a PDF. You can also delete them from the Slide Master.

Save your work Save your template as a PowerPoint document. For printing, save as PowerPoint of “Print-quality” PDF.

Adding Logos / Seals Most often, logos are added on each side of the title. You can insert a logo by dragging and dropping it from your desktop, copy and paste or by going to INSERT > PICTURES. Logos taken from web sites are likely to be low quality when printed. Zoom it at 100% to see what the logo will look like on the final poster and make any necessary adjustments. TIP: See if your company’s logo is available on our free poster templates page.

Photographs / Graphics You can add images by dragging and dropping from your desktop, copy and paste, or by going to INSERT > PICTURES. Resize images proportionally by holding down the SHIFT key and dragging one of the corner handles. For a professional-looking poster, do not distort your images by enlarging them disproportionally.

Image Quality Check Zoom in and look at your images at 100% magnification. If they look good they will print well.
