Pharmacy & Your HealthManagement of a Heart Defect at BirthA congenital heart defect (CHD) is a condition that develops prior to birth. Problems can occur in the blood vessels, valves, and chambers of the heart. Babies born prematurely are more likely to be affected by a CHD. A variety of defects may occur, ranging in severity from mild to life threatening. The most common CHD is ventricular septal defect (VSD), which is characterized by a “hole” between the right and left ventricles. Blood that contains adequate oxygen would normally move through the aorta and to the rest of the body. However, the opening created by this type of heart defect causes blood to move instead to the left ventricle, where blood does not contain enough oxygen. Symptoms of a VSD include an abnormal sound of the heart (known as a murmur), rapid breathing, and rapid heart rate.

Diuretics may be used to treat infants who experience rapid breathing and difficulty gaining weight, and to treat heart failure. Furosemide (Lasix), chlorothiazide (Diuril), and spironolactone (Aldactone) are all diuretics that may be prescribed for infants with VSD. Captopril (Capoten) and enalapril (Vasotec) are angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor medications that work to improve proper blood flow. Digoxin (Lanoxin) may be prescribed to improve heart contractions.

High Lakes Car Club - Not Just About Old Cars!Many in the La Pine area know the High Lakes Car Club. “Oh yeah, they have the car show.” But how many really know how involved we are in the community? Classic cars are our passion! But we do much more than host an annual car show!Three years ago, out Little Deschutes Grange was in danger of being closed down because they lacked membership. This would mean all money and property would go to the State Grange, which would be a real loss for La Pine. So, they came to the Car Club for help. Several of our members joined the Grange immediately, saving them from closure. Today, many Car Club members are Officers in the Grange.A couple of years ago, the La Pine Park and Recreation District was unable to pay their large insurance premium. They came to the Car Club for help. We were able to donate $1000 from the Club, matched by our member, Dave Hazeltine. This $2000 got the Park & Rec “over the hump” until they could get additional funding.Every year, our Car Club donates food, toys and money to the Christmas Baskets and the SCOOTR Toy Run. We also donate during the year to many other organizations who are helping in our community. Each year, we participate in the 4th of July Parade and the Christmas Light Parade. When the La Pine Rodeo Association, High School or Frontier Days need convertibles to drive princesses or dignitaries in the Parade or into their events, they call the Car Club and we are always happy to help.We have only two fund raisers during the year: The Classic Automotive Swap Meet on Saturday, May 12th and our High Lakes Show-n-Shine on Saturday, June 30th. Both events are held at the La Pine Senior Activity Center. Watch for posters!Classic car lovers will travel to wherever the great car shows are and we’ve been told by participants and vendors that our show is one of the best! We draw entries from Reno, Seattle, Spokane and California, as well as all of Oregon. This is a boost to La Pine’s economy and its image!We have had great community support and we sincerely appreciate every donation, whether it’s a trophy sponsorship, raffle item, cash donation or giveaway items for our “goody bags”. COVO La Pine Branch Office Grand Opening!The Grand Opening of the La Pine Branch Office of Central Oregon Veteran Outreach will be on May 10th from 4:00-7:00pm in La Pine Square (S7), across from Ray’s Food Place.COVO La Pine Branch Office - Who We Are and What We Do: La Pine, South Deschutes County, Northern Klamath County and Western Lake County collectively have a large population of Veterans. Many of these Veterans need help and many Veterans are willing to help. In recognition of this, COVO is working with community partners in La Pine to expand available services for Veterans in locations in and around La Pine.Central Oregon Veterans Outreach (COVO) is an advocate for veterans of all generations with a main office in Bend. Our mission is to serve, assist and create support for veterans who reside in Deschutes, Crook, Jefferson and parts of Harney, Lake and Klamath counties. COVO has four major areas in which we support veterans: an active Homeless Outreach Program; a Veterans Service Office; a Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP); and a Veterans Housing Program. We also operate the reservation lines for the daily DAV van to and from the Portland VA Hospital and the local van that picks up veterans in La Pine and surrounding areas who need rides to appointments at the local Bend VA Clinic.HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM provides clothing, gear, food, water, propane and other sustenance items as well as mobile medical and dental service vans to the homeless veterans living in camps, homeless shelters and transitional housing.VETERANS SERVICE OFFICE in COVO has a certified VSO who advocates for veterans seeking health, pensions or disability benefits from the Veterans Administration.HOMELESS VETERANS REINTEGRATION PROGRAM (HVRP) is a jobs training program that assists homeless veterans to re-enter the labor force and access the hidden job market to find long term employment. HIGH LAKES FEED – Owner: Greg RiddleSo, Greg, when did you open your business? “We bought the business on November 8, 2010 from former owners, Duane and Annie Cummins, who had opened it eighteen months before. After a pretty smooth transition, we are excited to be doing so well!”

Who are the main players at High Lakes Feed, Greg? “It is me running the retail and my mom, Cheryl Riddle and her husband Bill Brown, who help me with bookkeeping, backing and billing. We also have a great staff that covers the many hours we are open: Jimmy, Rhonda and Kenny are all trained to help us give customers what they need and keep us going.”

Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “My mom, Cheryl, moved here twenty five years ago and after thinking about what I wanted from my life, I followed her to Paradise and stayed!”

What is the potential for growth for your business? “As long as there is a need for what we provide our customers, we are growing. We have everything for animals and lots of great pet products, special western items for men and women and an assortment of things that animal lovers need on a regular basis. We also are a U-Haul Truck dealer and have some important rental items.”

What is your business's greatest challenge? “We have been growing so quickly that our big problem is inventory control. We are working on a system that feeds our regular lines into the inventory so we are never without the products we have to have for our customers.”

What is the biggest highlight of your career? “It is the people we deal with. The folks here are not the same as they are in Southern California. They are more friendly and down to earth. I just love them.”

What do you do to relax? “That is easy! I sit on the porch and feed the birds. I love to take the dogs for walks and go 4-wheeling. If I have enough time, I love to go fishing.”

Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “I was a machinist for twenty five years and had a chance to work doing custom tooling and I also modified engines for racing. (Cheryl proudly interrupted and told me about Greg’s magazine write-ups for Baja 500 racing engines and other work he did in the racing field.) I liked the work, but this is where I want to be.”

In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “Holding the clinics like the one we did for horses on Saturday a couple weeks ago lets the community learn about products and care and, helps them to make decisions about the care of domestic stock and pets. Happy healthy pets are important to the overall health of the community. We try to offer ideas that will add to the community. We also support the Chamber on a regular basis. The really good stuff is when people ask for us to sponsor events and organizations. We help the 4-H'ers with an annual Chili Feed and give them discounts on the feed they need for animal projects. We give broken bags of pet food to the La Pine Community Kitchen and St. Vinnie's. We support the Mounted Posse for Deschutes County and OHSET at the High School.”

What are your plans for the future? “We just want to keep growing and work to improve the community. Mom wants to retire and we are working to help her be able to do that, too.”

What advice would you give to community leaders? “We hope you continue to focus on making La Pine a most desirable place to live.”

Do you have a mission? “We want customer satisfaction, so we work on improving our business and customer service every day. If we succeed, then everyone here can enjoy being part of the La Pine community and we can spend time enjoying our area whenever we can.”

Darline Gustafson, 90 of La Pine, OR passed away April 13, 2012. She was born May 2, 1921 in Yakima, WA to William & Thelma (Ritter) Baker. She married Walter Gustafson on September 28, 1948 in Tacoma, WA. He preceded her in death in 1991. Surviving are her daughters, Daralee Johnson of Oregon City, Linda O’Neill of Aberdeen, WA; sons, Jean Jamison of La Pine, John Gustafson of Spokane, WA and Jim Gustafson of La Pine; a brother, Bill Baker of

Olympia, WA; 15 grandchildren & 18 great grandchildren. A graveside service was held Monday, April 23, 2012 at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR. OBITUARY

Elaine R. Hendry of Crescent, Oregon, passed away on May 2, 2012, after a valiant battle with cancer, with family at her side. She was 78. A celebration of life was held on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Baird Memorial Chapel in La Pine, with concluding interment at La Pine Community Cemetery. Elaine was born November 12, 1933, to William and Charlotte (Kelly) Erb, in Heier Township, Minnesota. She grew up on an Indian reservation

in Minnesota, and graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day, Oregon, in 1952.Elaine married Forest Hendry in Reno, Nevada, on August 14, 1953.Elaine was a proud member of the White Earth Reservation of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. She was also a musician, playing the banjo, guitar and mandolin; and she loved to dance, often giving dancing lessons to neighborhood children. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She was a Cub Scout leader and Bluebird leader, she was involved in the PTA, and also worked as the librarian in Gilchrist. She retired from Gilchrist Timber Company as a boiler operator.Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Forest; sons Phillip Hendry of Crescent, Oregon, and Robin Hendry of La Pine, Oregon; daughter Charlotte Shinn of Beaverton, Oregon; sister Lucille Beaupre of Ogema, Minnesota; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.Memorial contributions may be made in Elaine’s memory to Partners In Care Hospice, 2075 NE Wyatt Ct., Bend, OR 97701, 541-382-5882, www.partnersbend.org.Baird Memorial Chapel of La Pine is honored to have served the family. 541-536-5104. www.bairdmortuaries.com.

He was the owner, operator and mechanic of Rolling Wheel Lawn & Garden in Mulino, Oregon. Larry was also a volunteer EMT/Firefighter in Mulino.He and Shirley attended the La Pine Pentecostal Church of Christ. Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he was also an avid reader. He loved auto and small engine repair.Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shirley; son Larry W. Matt got everyone pumped up with Yee Haw and going to the Rodeo. Mikaela told them about the La Pine Rodeo and Mutton Bustin’.

Mikaela finished up by reading her tall tale story to three classes of 1st graders. She was kind to the kids, took photos with them and answered questions. Always smiling and waving to the kids.

Topping it off she signed autograph cards for all the 1st graders - about 65 kids.

400 kids went home with a postcard photo of Mikaeala and a coupon from McDonald’s for an ice cream cone.

We meet the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30pm at the Finley Butte Park Building located at 51390 Walling Road, off Finley Butte Road. At each meeting, we have a potluck dinner, business meeting and lots of fun. We also collect $10 dues from each member, most of which is donated to La Pine charities. If you are new to the area or just looking to make new friends and make a difference in our community, the Ya Ya’s might just be what you are looking for. Boy’s Soccer at La Pine High Schoolin Need of CoachLa Pine High School will be starting a new boy’s soccer program this fall. We are in need of qualified coaching applicants for a volunteer position. This person is responsible, with the Athletic Director, for planning for the upcoming season as well as practice scheduling, planning and execution.Please drop off a current resume and letter of interest at the La Pine High School Athletic Office. We will be taking resume’s through May 8th.
