Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time There was a man who lived on the edge of a small Midwestern town. He kept to himself, had his groceries delivered, and never ventured past his own front gate. No one made an effort to know him, and it stayed that way for nearly sixty years. When the man passed away, it was found that he had no family. The state-appointed lawyer for his estate ordered everything in his home sold or disposed of. Upon entering his home, the auctioneers found nearly every wall of the home covered in beautiful oil paintings, created by the man no one knew. He had a beautiful gift, yet he kept it to himself, and in doing so he deprived so many others of its beauty. Today's Gospel reading from John continues the theme of Jesus as the bread of life. He tells those listening that whoever eats his flesh and drinks his blood will have eternal life. We hear these words at every Mass as the priest recites the similar words from the Last Supper. We hear them so often we might not even react to their true meaning. Yet imagine hearing them for the first time that day with Jesus! The people, who have already witnessed his miracles, still refer to him as "this man." They cannot believe. We approach the altar solemnly, reverently. The host is placed in our hands; "the body of Christ." We are offered the cup; "the blood of Christ." And with each gift, we respond, "Amen." And it is in that amen that we are truly saying, "Yes, in receiving the true body and blood of Christ, I am becoming the body and blood of Christ and wish to share it with others." Our faith, our belief in God's saving grace, "is a treasure of life which is enriched by being shared" (CCC 949).

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A vacationer e-mailed a seaside hotel to ask its location. "It's only a stone's throw away from the beach," was the reply. "But how will I recognize it?" asked the vacationer. Back came the reply: "It's the one with all the broken windows."

AN IMPORTANT LETTER TO SHARE: Every so often, I receive a letter that has so much feeling to it that I have to share it. When I returned from being away the other week, this letter was waiting for me in my mailbox:

August 3, 2009 Dear Father Yadron: I recently had a seizure and spent some time at Community Hospital. Did you know that Jesus had a valid Indiana Drivers License? He drove from your parish to offer his precious Body and Blood to me. He looked different each time he came, but I knew that it was him. Please offer my appreciation to your Ministers of the Eucharist for their love and devotion. I have been volunteering to do exactly the same thing at St. Anthony’s Nursing Home and it was not until I was on the receiving end that I realized what an impact this could have on someone. Peace and Love.

You know, there are so many times that we ask ourselves the question, “Does what I do really matter? Am I making a difference? Is the Lord working through me?” The answer to those questions is a resounding, “Yes!” God can and does work through us. We are His arms and feet and voice in this world. We are the ones through whom He communicates, if we just give him a chance to do so. To all of you who are involved in ministries, please realize that the “thank you” listed above is meant for you. You are Jesus to those to whom you minister. You are His hands, you speak His words, you bring His love. To those of you who would like the opportunity to be the hands and feet and heart and love of Jesus, it is as easy as volunteering. The coordinators for all sorts of ministries are listed on the inside of our bulletin. Feel free to contact them and to volunteer your time. The scriptures remind us best: God is love and we who abide in love abide in God, and God in us. God bless you all for what you do for His people!

Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary more than fifty years. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: August 20: Msgr. Michael A. Petzold (1965)

With the flu season fast approaching and with all that we have heard about flu around the world, this would definitely be a good time to consider getting a flu shot, especially if you are one of the people who are considered “at risk” for the flu: ▪ People age 50

years and older ▪ People with

chronic or long-term medical conditions

▪ Very young children

▪ Pregnant women Typically, 10-20% of the population gets the flu each year. This year, though, the numbers could dramatically increase.

For many of the younger children who visit us

during the St. Thomas More Parish Festival,

there is something that’s even more entertaining than

eating an ice cream cone or going on the

merry-go-round, and that’s the

Children’s Game Tent! Here, the little ones can take their turn at a

number of fun games that are geared just for them. Thank you to the many St. Thomas More

School students who staffed the children’s game tent during the festival. Your generous gift of

time is greatly appreciated.

Under the direction of St. Thomas More School Art Teacher, Miss. Cindy

Wisniewski, the students of our school

held the inaugural spring Art Fair in the

school’s gymnasium. Artwork from each STMS student was

exhibited, allowing for an impressive display. Parishioners were invited to enjoy this local

art fair after all masses on Sunday, May 24th. School parents were invited to tour the

exhibit on Tuesday, May 26th as the entire student body had the opportunity to admire

the creative projects of their fellow classmates during their school day. Thank you to all who participated.

We look forward to another wonderful presentation next year.

St. Thomas More School Highlights

Its Student Artists

Do you remember your first pen pal? Do you remember when people communicated through hand-written

letters, rather than e-mails and text messages? Well, the students in Mrs. Jennifer Zabrecky’s third grade class have resurrected the old-time tradition of having that

special written relationship with an unseen friend in a

far-off place. For the entire 2008-2009 school year, Mrs. Zabrecky’s students at St. Thomas More School have been regularly corresponding with a third grade class at

Johnston Elementary School in Highland, which just happens to be the third grade class of Mrs.

Zabrecky’s husband, Greg. This enriching student experience was integrated throughout

the year into our student’s curriculum.

To culminate the year’s work, all the students involved in Mr. and Mrs. Zabrecky’s classes came together in May at Munster Community Park for a “meet-and-greet” picnic with their

year-long pen pals.
