Oh Lord, give us a mind that is humble,

quiet, peaceable, patient and charitable, and

a taste of your Holy Spirit in all our thoughts,

words, and deeds. O Lord, give us a lively

faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of

you. Take from us all lukewarmness in

meditation and all dullness in prayer. Give

us fervor and delight in thinking of you, your

grace, and your tender compassion toward

us. Give us, good Lord, the grace to work for

the things we pray for.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY

MOMENTS

The Daily Examen of Stewardship

“Stewardship” can get a bum rap these days. When folks hear the term

“stewardship” from the pulpit, their eyes tend to kind of glaze over.

“Here’s Father asking for more money,” they groan inwardly, “Get

ready for the passing of the pledge cards.”

Christ refutes this idea when he gives us what he calls the greatest

commandments — instructing us to love God and to love our neighbor.

Now, Christ is a man who chose his words carefully. He meant exactly

what he said — and he didn’t say that the greatest commandments

were to tithe and to give money to charity. If he had wanted

stewardship to be only about money, he would have said so.

Sometimes we are indeed called to show our love for God and neighbor

in the form of a financial gift. But the concept of Everyday Stewardship

— living mindfully in prayer, grateful for our blessings, and gracious

to our neighbors, committed to God, and accountable to each other —

is about so much more.

I propose a twist on the long-held practice of the “Daily Examen” — a

pious devotion wherein, at day’s end, we go over the events of the last

24 hours and discern God’s will. A Daily Examen of Stewardship might

contain questions like this:

How did I love God today? In whom did I love Him?

What did God give me today? With whom did I share it? What did I

give to Him?

To whom did I reach out today? Who reached out to me?

Where was God on my list of priorities today? First? Second? Third,

fourth?

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

It is the time of year when our bishop asks us to support

the ministry and programs of the Diocese of Spokane

through donations to the Annual Catholic Appeal. This

Appeal provides the majority of the revenue with which

the diocese carries out its mission, administratively and pastorally.

You can make your donation anytime you wish, using the

envelopes you may have received in the mail or that are available in

church, or using the on-line option (www.dioceseofspokane.org).

Our assessment this year for our parish is $153,378.00, which is

about $4,000.00 more than our assessment last year. To date, our

parishioners have given $128,414.00, which is 84% of our goal. If

we all give as much as we can, we will once again meet our

assessed amount.

Please prayerfully consider a donation this year’s ACA.

Question:

Is Halloween a pagan holiday or a

Catholic one?

Answer:

The short answer: nowadays, a

little bit of both. But it wasn’t

always that way. Halloween and

All Saints’ Day are closely

connected. In the 800s, the

Catholic Church began

celebrating All Saints’ Day. It was

originally called All Hallow’s Day

or Hallowmas. The celebration

began early on All Hallows’ Eve. But if Halloween is really about

the saints in all their victorious glory, where do we get haunted

houses, costumes, and pranks?

All Saints’ Day became associated with the other deceased rather

quickly. November 2

nd

is All Souls Day, where we pray for the

souls in purgatory. Throughout the European world, especially

with the Celtic and Germanic peoples, the dead were honored in

the autumn months. The Celtic pagan celebration of Samhain had

its own folk rituals and occurred around the same time as these

Catholic feast days.

Within the last few hundred years, this included dressing in

disguise and going door to door, asking for food in exchange for a

rhyme or poem. Some people masqueraded as “dark” spirits and

pulled pranks on others. Today’s celebration of Halloween tends to

take on these later practices, rather than the original meaning of

celebrating the saints. But remember … this feast was Catholic

first!

Dear St. Thomas More Community,

We have been very busy this fall at St. Thomas More!

We had a very successful Fund Run on October 1

st

! We had overwhelming support and

generosity from our St. Thomas More Community to ensure that all students can receive a

Catholic education.

Following Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, our students have been busy caring for our

earth and community in our CSTEM garden. We were able to harvest a bountiful crop to

support our local St. Vincent de Paul ministry. St. Thomas More students are learning the

value of gardens, caring for the earth, and supporting our community. Mrs. Barnes worked

many hours and with many students to bring the harvest to fruition.

Our 8

th

graders are hard at work earning money for the end of the year Washington DC trip.

With the help of Jack Louie and an army of volunteers, we had a successful takeout Chinese

Dinner. Remember if you need help with fall cleanup, we have 8

th

graders that would love to

work to earn money for their Washington DC trip.

Thank you for the ongoing support of the Parish and St. Thomas More community to ensure

students can receive a Catholic education.
