Of course Douglas' assess-ment is more idyllic than substan-tive these days since greed, drugs, dishonesty and cynicism have tarnished the toy images we of the ball card collecting era long held dear. ,

writes:" I wanted to couple of the letters you had in your column (recently). They commented -on how they hoped Coach (Eddie) Sutton would create dynasty in the same way that John Wooden did at UCLA. Now I am one of these young Kentucky fans (I'm 19) that is..unfortunately, not old enough to remember Coach (Adolph)Rupp and all his "wonder-ful achievements. But I was raised up proper. That is. to believe that next to God 'and family. UK basketball is top priority. And I too have been afflicted by this conta-gious disease that all UK fans are stricken with--leaving one in a state of mind that he believes UK should "win 10 championships in a row while never losing over 2 in a season (and those had better be close).

"But when I sit back and think about those expectations it sometimes strikes me just how spoiled we UK fans are. Out of 256 Division I teams. I would wager that1 in the past 14 'horrible' years that we've gone through, we're still in the top 20 for total victories, winning percentage, and number of championships (not just NCAA. We-win-more "games than most colleges dream of.

"I am going to be brash enough to say that the past 14 years were not horrible. Indeed. I would even call them respectable. We played the toughest teams in the country year in and year out. It's hard to build a dynasty against Louisville. Indiana, and North Carolina.

"It's hard to build a dynasty period. There are simply too many good players in the country today.. Pick up a list of next year's potential recruits. There are the top 100 (probably pro potential) "vd then hundred"; m"— potential. I sometimes tHink OK fans expect to have the entire top 100 on our bench. But we can't! Only 15. and only 5 on the floor at a.time. And we have to face the fact that everyone doesn't "want" to come to UK anymore. And for everyone who does, there's going to be a player of equal stature on the other team.

"Maybe I'm just npt old enough to remember the days when we never lost. Maybe some of the older fans will say. "That boy just ain't true blue." Or maybe I just think too much. In

any case. I hope we fans don't expect, tow ..itich of Coach Sutton in his first year. I -think the man can be a great coach and bring a championship or two to the state. I also hope we fans don't lose our heads and choke him befot&Jlje has a chance."

Comment: In 14 "horrible" years under Coach Joe B. Hall. Kentucky won 20 or more games 11 times, including one 30-win season and two 29-victory cam-paigns. The Wildcats won or shared eight SEC titles, one SEC tournament and an NCAA champ-ionship and advanced to the Final Four three times.

Comment II: About the nat-ion's all-time Top 20 colleges in terms of victories, according to the NCAA figures through the 1984-85 season Kentucky ranks first in college basketball, with 1.376 victories with North Carolina second at 1.343. Not Including victories from last season, here are the rest of the Topa 10:
