Arts ProgramDirector’s Message

Jimmy McDermott

Some artists begin with a blank page. Others build upon existing or

found materials. This is, perhaps, a more fitting analogy for the new Ly

Hotchkin Arts Program. We are building upon a community that values its art. We are building

upon the classes we currently offer in visual art, music and performance which have already

reached many. We are building more. To reach more.

We are also literally building an art studio and dance/fitness studio on our second floor.

Opening Winter 2017, these spaces will give the Ly Hotchkin Arts Program a devoted home.

Our new facilities will serve as cultural centers as much as instructional classrooms. There will

be something to discover for every person at any age.

For 75 years, The Community House has been your place to gather and grow. You may come

through our doors to play a game of pick up basketball or a hand of bridge. We now invite you

to stay and make something. The Ly Hotchkin Arts program emphasizes the creation in recreation.

“LyArts” values experiences over activities. Our expanding series of classes, workshops,

camps, exhibits and presentations in every imaginable art form are designed for you encounter

who you are in relation to your community. Whether you express yourself through acrylic paint,

a digital camera, the written word or a song, there is something here for you.

Art is more than visual. It is experiential. Something happens to the person who makes a work

of art. Something happens to the person who receives that work of art. And those two things

may not necessarily be the same. That’s the coolest thing about it. Art is your response to the

world around you. One that can never be duplicated. The only requirement is your perspective

and curiosity.
