GREETINGS

Chicago Center for Green Technology is looking forward to 2011! This season we offer a multitude of opportunities for education, networking, local professionals and like-minded individuals.

Our Green Tech U program is heading into its seventh year. We anticipate continued success with the dynamic speakers and topics on the schedule. We have diverse offerings that range from an examination of best practices in building return on investment to creating a sustainable backyard to a dissection of different spray foam insulations. Working with our programming partners at Chicago Architecture Foundation, Foresight Sustainable Business Alliance, Lurie Garden, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and USGBC-Illinois Chapter, we will host sustainable programming at several unique locations throughout Chicago.

Our second floor exhibit space will recognize the 2010 winners of Mayor Daley’s Landscape Awards. This beautiful showcase of innovative designs will help inspire us as we think ahead to planting gardens and watch Chicago’s landscapes awaken after the winter months. This year plants will emerge not only on our grounds and rooftop, but also our new installations of vegetated green wall systems on the east side of the building. Our resident honeybees will take flight amongst the early spring blooms and we can safely observe the inner workings of a hive in the Green Building Resource Center.

ccgT continues to work diligently toward our mission: to promote and advance sustainable homes, workplaces and communities, to enhance the quality of urban life through educational programming and training, research and demonstration and by acting as a resource network. We are confident there is a topic that will speak to everyone’s interests and hope you will take full advantage. We always welcome you to share your ideas for future programs and we enjoy hearing about your current green projects, so please stop by during building hours and say hello!

TITLE: Green Walls ExhibitDATE: Coming Spring 2011TIME: Open during regular building hoursLOCATION: Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd. FEE: FREE! CCGT will launch a new Green Walls Exhibit in spring 2011. The exhibit will include displays from leading manufacturers of vertical garden and plantable retaining wall systems, and will also include an indoor component. Green walls absorb and detain stormwater, intercept solar radiation and reduce heat island effects, clean the air and provide habitat for birds and beneficial insects. When used to cover a building, particularly south- and west-facing walls, significant energy savings can result. Green walls have also been shown to reduce glare and promote positive human interaction by bringing greenery into people’s cone of vision. Green walls can include vines, vine support systems, vertical gardens, and combinations thereof. Planting systems can be soil-based or hydroponic: both will be displayed at CCGT, and irrigated from our rainwater harvesting cisterns.

greeN Tech u Program

The Chicago Center for Green Technology’s Green Tech U Program has been developed in response to the increasing demand for educational resources in green technology in Chicago. Green Tech U seminars provide an opportunity to meet like-minded people, expand professional networks and increase knowledge of sustainability, green building and public policy. All Green Tech U seminars are available to any interested individuals throughout the year.

Chicago Public School Teachers: Start a C3 Student Club at your school! The chicago conservation corps is now recruiting teachers to attend our orientations in anticipation of the 2011-2012 school year. At the orientation, you will learn how C3 can help you start and run an after-school environmental service club for 8th-12th grade CPS students. Club projects include recycling, worm composting, water conservation, and anti-idling campaigns. Teachers involved receive a stipend, materials, project guides, training and other resources from the Chicago Department of Environment. Attend an orientation on April 12, 13, or 14 (locations TBD) to learn more. For questions or to reserve a seat, please contact (312) 743-9283 or email [email protected]. To apply you must be a Chicago Public School teacher (8th – 12th grades) and attend an orientation. If you are accepted into the program, you must attend three workshops in the 2011-2012 school year, held on Tuesday evenings at the Chicago Center for Green Technology, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd, Chicago, IL 60612. Explore Environmental Service with the Chicago Conservation Corps (C3)Check out C3’s exciting ways to explore environmental service.
